Photosmart 7520 - Non-HP Cartridge Message

As of today, I have received 4,874 "Non-HP Cartridge(s)" messages from HP.  I consider this out and out harassment rather than reminders to use HP cartridges in the printer.  I am using Office Depot cartridges because the local Office Depot was out of HP 7520 cartridges when I needed them last September.  I tried the hard reset sequence suggested in an earlier post, but it did not work (I've received 12 messages from HP as I drafted this!).  If HP is trying to drive off customers, they are doing a fine job.  And at this point, on general principles, I can't envision buying genuine HP catrridges for the printer, or buying any other HP product in the future.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to make the messages stop (short of buying HP cartridges), please let me know.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details.
If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, this post has instructions.

  • Photosmart 7520, eliminating toner cartridge skankware

I have a photosmart 7520 I am very disappointed with.
How do I prevent the perpetual pop ups advertising HP consumables?
I routinely get a sequence of 3 pop ups.
When I use the HP utility to attempt to control the HP alerts the application crashes "critical error occured. please restart application ..."
I will discard the printer but woudl like guidance for how to expunge the advertising daemon.

Hello twdeckard, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are looking into printer pop-ups.  I would like to try and assist.
I would suggest deleting the printer from your print system, using this document: Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Once you have deleted it, I would suggest verifying and repairing the disk permissions: About Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature.
I would also suggest running your Apple updates:  OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps
After the updates, I would recommend reinstalling the HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer Full Feature Software and Drivers.  Once you have launched the software, select which programs you want installed.
Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • PHOTOSMART 7520 PRINTER SETUP CARTRIDGE

iI mistakenly trashed the 564 setup cartridge..printer will not function without this...is there a substitute cartridge that I can use???

Had you done the initial setup of the printer?  If so you can use standard cartridges available at the store.  If the cartridges were misplaced before the printer was set up you will need to contact HP for replacement setup cartridges, these are not available in stores.

  • How do I get the "non HP Ink Cartridge" pop up to go away??? HP Photosmart 7520

After my trial ink ran out on the HP Photosmart 7520 I installed a non-hp ink cartridge.  It prints fine but EVERY SINGLE TIME I print anything I get a pop up saying I have a non-hp cartridge installed and the quality cannot be guaranteed.  It then gives me the option to shop HP online, cancel the print, or click ok to close it.  EVERY SINGLE TIME.  I print a lot of pages and this is extremely annoying.  There is no "do not show this message in the future" option.  How can I make this stop popping up????

OK, you're receiving this error because of the non HP cartridge you've installed. This message can be bypassed by selecting OK; it will not go away until you install HP ink. Until then you should be able to print.

  • Photosmart 7520 Cartridge Problem

Hello.I am having trouble installing replacement cartridges for the Photosmart 7520.  I place them in, locking them in place as I should and keep getting the error "One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged".  They are HP cartriges so that is not the problem.  I have taken them out, cleaned the sensors as it says in my troubleshooting guide.  Sometimes when I close the access door it will tell me another cartridge is not working too.  Any help would be appreciated.ThanksTK

I despair of this problem.  My siimple HP3420 was a model of reliability. I bought the PhotoSmart 7520 in March 2013 and it has been a constant nightmare. I have wasted hours when I should be productive, removing and refitting cartridges, cleaning contacts, wiggling cartridges and surfing the 'net looking for a solution. If I breath near the cartridges they are prone to showing up as 'missing or damaged'. It makes no difference whether I use cripplingly expensive HP cartridges, HP refills or third party cartridges. There is clearly a MAJOR problem with this model and the manner in which it is constructed. Meanwhile my daughter's printer (which I won't name in deference to this being a HP forum) operates smoothly without any problems of this type. It also has a better design allowing straight through paper runs, which makes a big difference when she prints images on thick paper/card, while the HP invariably scuffs the leading edge. I doubt that I will ever buy a HP again after this. For what it is worth I usually get the printer to work again, but can never figure out what did the trick. As I write this magenta is not recognised, I have cleaned contacts, unpligged the cable, removed the print head cradle, and tried several genuine cartridges. On and Off the photo black comes up with the same message, and then it is okay again.  It could be any of them - this seems to be a problem across the machine, not specific to a single cartridge bay, which would suggest a local problem. Meanwhile the machine is totally useless as there is no workaround to allow me to carry on (say with black only printing. Simply dreadful. I greatly resent the time I have wasted over the last two years with this problem.

  • Printer cartridge for HP Photosmart 7520

I bought a new HP Photosmart 7520. When changing the photo black inkt cartridge I used one of the catridges I bought some time ago for my former printer.  The cartridge is from the 364 series, the production date (?) stamped on the box reads IRELAND Oct 2010.  The printer does not accept the cartridge displaying an error message which (translated from Dutch) reads: Incompatible older generation cartridge installed.  Does this mean that I have to through away the 364 cartridges I still have left?

Hello there, Welcome to the Forums! I hope you enjoy your experience
I read your post about the message you are seeing when installing an ink cartridge you had purchased some time ago. I have located some information about the message you're seeing and I'de like to share that with you.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion.

  • Disabling continual Non-HP ink cartridge message

Please help!I can see there have been many others with the same annoying problem, but I can not seem to stop the 'Non-HP Ink cartridge"message coming up on my computer constantly, even when I'm not printing anything! Whenever I am on my computer, the message comes up every 5 seconds. I can't get anything done!I tried unchecking the "Enable bidirectional support" box under "Ports", (as per one of the answers here) but it hasn't worked. I am wondering if I turned my computer off and on again, would that work? I have a HP Pavillion 23 computer.Surely I don't have to unplug my printer every time I'm on my computer and go through this rubbish whenever I need to scan or print something? This is beyond frustrating!Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you are getting a continual Non-HP ink message with your HP Photosmart Plus B210 on Windows 8. I am sorry for the frustration but happy to look into this for you. Are you using Genuine HP ink cartridges? Or refilled/Non-HP ink? Please see this guide, Can I Refill The Ink In My HP Ink Cartridge? As well as this guide, Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers. In the meantime, please try the solutions within this guide, HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One Printer - B210a support. Also, the HP Print and Scan Doctor, might help as well. Hope this information is helpful, and thank you for posting!

  • Streaky printing with new XL black cartridge (Photosmart 7520)

I installed a new HP XL black cartridge in the Photosmart 7520 about 10 days ago.  Today the black and white text printing I mostly do started becoming unreadable - streaky, smudged, faint - even though the ink level report shows about 3/4 full for black (of course the report itself printed with streaks, etc.) I removed and re-inserted the black cartridge to make sure it was seated properly (it was and it is) and then I ran the clean cartridges function on the printer. The print quality report came back looking good (including alignment) except that the black area was streaky. After getting this print quality report, I tried printing text again. The first one page document printed somewhat streaky and with erratic faint areas; the second time I printed it, it was almost unreadable. Any suggestions?

Repeated cleanings and then using the "align printer" function seemed to do the trick.

  • Photosmart 7520 ink cartridges

Q1)  I have a 8 month old Photosmart 7520 with 5 ink cartridge slots.  Previously I have only needed to buy the large black 364XL ink cartridge.  Last week, as my colour had run out,  I bought the 364 4-pack, which to my surprise has a large black, small pink, blue and yellow cartridges  -  no small black.  Can I buy the small black separately?
Q2)  I was also surprised that all 5  ran out simultaneously, whilst still showing a small amount on screen.  Are they designed to stop after so many copies, regardless of any ink left in any of the cartridges?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The small "black" cartridge is a photo cartridge, you can buy a 364 or 364xl photo cartridge separately.
There is a priming process that uses some ink when a cartridge is replaced to remove air from the printheads.  If some cartridges are low on ink (but perhaps not completely depleted) changing a different cartridge may cause enough ink to be used to deplete the low cartridges.
The document here has information on how ink is used in the printer, the Photosmart 7520 is an IIC printer in the terminology of that document.

  • Photosmart 7520 won't print black, says I have half a cartridge

My printer won't print black (regular, not photo black).  The ink level says I have half a cartridge.  I have tried cleaning the heads so many times but no change.  I tried to find an answer in the help section of HP and had no luck.  I tried to contact HP but was told because my printer was out of warranty in January I would have to pay to talk to someone.  Can anyone help?  I'm  disappointed in HP, charging people to talk to customer service is ridiculous.

The steps in the document here may help resolve black not printing on your Photosmart 7520 printer.  Be sure to check the vents as shown in Solution Six.
If the above does not resolve the issue then soaking the printhead as described in the post here may help.

  • Photosmart 7520 ink cartridge

Not exactly an install question, but recently purchased Photosmart 7520.  In trying to replace the set up ink cartridges, the regular size cartridges I have purchased are too big and won't fit the ink tray.  This is not the XL size, just the regular size.  Where exactly am I supposed to get the proper ink size cartridge when the HP cartridges for this printer won't fit?

I'm glad your problem is solved.

  • Error Message - Photosmart 7520

I just purchased the HP Photosmart 7520 and everything is working OK except a couple times a day the panel  flashes stating there is a printer error and to turn the printer off and then back on. Then it's OK again till it does it again. What is causing this? Otherwise the printer works great.

The partial reset is usually pretty good, but if that doesn't work, I would go for a semi-full reset. That's usually the next step. Let me know if the partial reset continues to work for you or if you run into any other issues.

  • Photosmart 7520 Horrible Print Quality

I have purchased HP printers for years and have always considered them excellent and reliable products. About a year ago I purchased a Photosmart 7520. This has turned out to be the worst printer I have ever owned. The print quality is terrible and unreliable. The ink constantly streaks or doesn't flow properly. The ink cartridges last no time at all. I have constantly used the clean print head and align feature with only minimal and temporary improvement. I may have to throw this one in the trash and look at another brand.

I have to agree with you.  The HP7520 is the worst HP printer I have ever owned.  It streaks constantly on regluar paper, none of my previous printers did this.
I abandoned an old reliable printer for this printer just to get wi-fi network printing capability.  My old Brother MFC250 all in one printer was the first non-HP printer I had ever owned.  Previous to that I had several HP printers, and had worked supporting HP Corvallis' site in the 90's, so I am a fan of HP technology in general.
This printer has the following shortcomings:
    1) Ink cartridges are engineered to look like they contain ink... but are constantly running dry.  I do not print as much now as I used to in the past.  (*SMALLEST INK LONGEVITY*)... If the cartridges could be made any smaller... HP Marketing would have done this IMHO.
    2) Print output is constantly streaking, requiring the printer be "tuned up" constantly
    3) Print cartridge installation/sanity check is buggy/fragile, in one case a $12 print cartridge for Photo Black I installed this week was "damaged".   I bought another cartridge, and it too was "damaged".  A power cycle of the printer yielded non problem... just a wasted purchase and time to run out and buy a replacement cartridge to replace a newly installed cartridge that had no problem.
I *just* ran out of color ink, and I'm certain that this is indeed the worst HP printer I have ever owned.
Having said all of this... it looks nice on my desktop and the chimes are nice...
What would help is a better "you are running low on ink" indication with this printer.   If I knew say, a week ahead of time that I'm running out of ink... that would be nice.
This printer may need to be recycled once I can find a review of a better one.
My wife has an old printer somewhere in storage, we may pull that one out and dust it off and plug it into the router to have wireless printing... <sigh>.
Would *NOT* recommend this printer for purchase.... heading to Amazon to add that customer review.

  • Annoying Non-HP inktcartridge message

I have a HP Photosmart 65020 and installed remanufactured inktcartridges, now I'm being harrassed by HP every time I print something because of that. Is there a way to stop HP from displaying the Non-Inktcartridge message every time I print something? I'm running Windows 8 and have already tried to find the registry HKLM\Software\Hewlett-Packard\HPDJ Printing System Config\then your hp model but with no luck.
Reason for installing remanufactured cartridges is that those will cost me half of original HP cartridges and have more than double the amount of ink in them. For something that eventually is going to be thrown away I really prefer to be a cheapskate.

    Hi @Crispy78,
Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I see you are using refilled cartridges with your HP Photosmart 6520, and everytime you print you get a pop up regarding the non HP ink. No, there is not a way to turn these notifications off, as they are warnings for the printer. A stated on ALL ink troubleshooting documents:
'HP recommends that you use genuine HP cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges or refilled HP cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the following solutions might not resolve your print quality issue.'
To get a better understanding take a look at the documents below:
