Photosmart 8250 constant maintenance cycles while printing & excessive ink usage

I'm having a problem with my trusty 4-year-old HP Photosmart 8250: Whenever I print a document, whether in color or black ink only mode, it constantly enters maintenance cycles and excessively uses ink.
Two examples: When I printed a color document (color, HP Bright White Inkjet Paper, 17 pages), the printer behaved erratically, with constant maintenance cycles. It also said I had to change yellow ink, but when I re-turned on the printer to install a fresh yellow ink cartridge (I only use original HP ink), it still showed remaining yellow ink. Then yesterday, when I printed a 32 page graphics document (black ink only, plain paper, normal), the ink meter for black dropped from full to 25% full (I had changed the black cartridge only one week earlier), and the printer went through four maintenance cycles. Neither had happened before in my four years of owning this printer, and the black ink consumption for similar documents in the past was barely a quarter of what it was for this document.
Are these issues most likely related to the printhead? I know that the Photosmart 8250, like all printers with HP 02 cartridges, uses a fixed non-replaceable printhead, so does the printhead need cleaning or alignment? Or should I just get a new HP printer, as I have used this printer extremely frequently over the past 4 years?
Thanks for all your help!

Hi johnpd,
There have been some significant upgrades to photo printing and the inks since the MP610 was introduced.  With the MG7120, and the XL ink tanks (which are comparably priced to the standard ink tanks used in the MP610), you should receive similar or greater page yields.  One major reason for this boost is the addition of the gray CLI-251 ink.  When gray appears in your printout, instead of using a mixture of all the other colors, the gray ink is used, reducing your overall ink consumption.
At the risk of sounding like a typical salesman, "I want to get you in the model that is right for you"!  If you are looking for a photo printer, the MG7120 is one of my top suggestions for a quality Photo All-in-One.  If however, you do not plan to make heavy use of the printer and only occasionally print photos, you might get more value from an Office All-in-One.

Hey Spider! First off welcome to the forum.
I would recommend removing all the ink cartridges, unplugging the USB cable from the computer that connects to the printer, and then shutting the printer off completely by removing the power cord. Then restart your computer. Turn the printer back on but leave it disconnected from the computer. After it has finished its power on cycle go ahead and insert the ink cartridges back into the printer and be sure to seat them properly.
After you have all the cartridges back in the printer properly then connect it to the computer. See if this resolves the issue. If not post back with any findings.
    Thanks,

  • What can be done with the excessive ink usage on the HP6700 printer?

I just replaced all the cartridges in a HP6700 printer so I could print a black only page (that issue has it's own thread of disappointed customers). Now after very little use, perhaps 20-30 pages at most and again mostly just black type, the message that cyan ink is low comes up. Yes, I set it to print black only and grayscale most every page but I think that is false. I use the Draft setting on most things in another hopless effort to save ink. I think I did better from the starter pack that came with the printer which also ran out about the same time but I did at least print have the pages with color then. Does anyone know of a way to get this thing to stop using up ink so fast other than leaving in unplugged in the corner or placing it in the garbage can.??

    Hi oceanbob,
I appreciate your frustration, I really do. However, this particular printer uses some color inks even when printing in black only. The reason for this is for servicing tasks and to make sure your printhead does not dry out and cause problems in the future. If you did run out of color and kept printing black only, you will cause problems with the printhead.
For more information here is your User Guide to your printer, see page 74.

  • PhotoSmart Premium fax C309 won't print black ink

Windows Xp series 2. Had been refilling ink cartriges when problem first occured. Installed two new black ink cartriges and still wouldn't print black ink. Cleaned print heads several times using the menu on the printer. Still did not correct the problem. Color is fine. Did a print test report and all color ink shows fine but no black. Alignment is fine. Do I need a new print head? Printer only gets occasional use.

  • C309g Excessive Ink Usage

We upgraded from an 8 year old HP printer to a new shiny HP Photosmart Premium C309g.
It has sleek thin ink cartridges #564.
Our old printer used these fat huge cartridges at $35 each.
The #564's have a larger black cartridge that is about $30.
I was impressed by the literature at the store that explained how this printer used less ink than the older printers.
    So I bought it.
And now I'm wondering why my new shiny printer is using ink twice as fast as my old dinosaur.
Can somebody explain to me how to get this printer to be more efficient?  Or should I go get my old printer and give this one to GoodWill?
    Thank you.

I've had this printer for less then a year and have replaced all the ink in it at least four times. I RARELY print photos, and when I do they're only 4x6 and I rarely print text with color. Typically I print FAST DRAFT in black. This thing is HORRID on ink. Even though I like the printer's functionality, I'm already considering dumping it and buying a KODAK which do use less ink.

  • Excess ink usage on Photosmart 7520

Let me add my voice to those who find their ink supply shrinking too fast, and I'll add a complaint about inaccurate reservoir level displays.
I have been replacing the color ink cartridges about every 30 days. These are the standard size, not the XL. The last set was installed on April 13 (yes, I keep track now), and I swear I haven't printed more than two dozen 4x6 glossy photos (probably less than 20) plus maybe 30-40 pages of b/w text. I bought my printer on March 6, used the startup cartridges for maybe a week, and installed the fresh cartridges.
There is also a problem with the ink level display, which shows a minimum of about 25% supply remaining, but the print quality print shows garbage on all colors. BW is OK.
I like the printer, but I don't know if I can afford the ink!
Does anybody have any comments regarding this particular printer?

When you are replacing the suppies are you waiting till the printer cannot print any more?

  • Photosmart 7520 options issue: How to print black ink, on both sides, with borderless.

I am checking to see if anyone has ever found a solution to the issue involved with borderless printing when the options "print on both sides" and "black ink only" are chosen.
I used to be able to print on both sides, flip on long edge, and choose black ink only, and I was able to print borderless.  There was never an issue until last year, when out of the blue a yellow warning triangle appeared next to borderless printing.   I do not know why this happened, and I was never able to solve the issue, even with two hour-long conversations with polite and tireless HP phone reps.  One HP rep even helped me download a driver for a newer printer to see if that helped, and it did not.
Now in order to print without the extra border, I have to do the following in order to receive the regular output:
    1.  After saving, I make a custom border that is .75 inches all the way around instead of one inch.
    2.  I increase the font size of every block of print by .5 in size.
    3.  Then I print, but I do not save;  when I close, it saves as it was before the changes I made to ameliorate the HP options mishap.
If any HP technician our here can tell me when this issue will be addressed and solved, I would appreciate it.
Oh, I run an Acer laptop with Windows 7, the 64-bit version.  I use the wireless printing option.  This issue occurs with my Word Program (2013), and my up-to-date Adobe .pdf files.
    Thank you very much.

    Hey there PrincessCupcake!
Thanks for the detailed post back to me.
If this was at one time an option for you and now is not, it would make sense to me that an update of some sort had made the option null and void for you, especially if you have completely uninstalled the printer driver and software and then reinstalled it. If the option was going to be available, doing the uninstall and reinstall would have fixed it in a jiffy.
I am out of ideas as to any other cause besides an update, as you mentioned. If you have installed the printer on another computer, see if the options are there, if not, they aren't available.
    Happy Monday to you

  • Excess Ink Usage

I have a D1660 which works great. However, it is using a great deal of ink. I wish there were a counter on it. But I do know this, in the use of maybe two hundred sheets of paper and single side printing, half printing done in draft/no color, and maybe the other half printed in normal and color. I'm wishing that I had repaired the old HP printer.

  • HP7520 Excessive ink usage

When I bought this printer I could not beleive the small size of the cartridges.  Now after a year when I actually had to print a small quantity of pages 50, the ink runs dry.  I look at chenging print setting which do not appear on a MAC.  Also in buying new ink cartidges HP chooses to give you FREE photo paper which uses more ink than printing.  So for 3 small cartridges I'm buying one big box and throwing out the photo paper.  HP needs to really start thinking green and make printers around one set of cartridges to save everyone alot of money and the environment.
In addtion I've seen posts where the wireless is terrible.  I'm back to using a cable because it just won't stay connected.

  • Photosmart 8250 colors are way off

Photosmart 8250 has been a great printer for several years. (out of warranty now of course) I haven't had any paper or photo, 4x6, feeding problems at all, and have only had one paper jam. Lately the color printing has gone bad. I use only HP inks, never have used a "refill" in the printer. Lately I saw an error on the printers screen, it was about the paper sensor being faulty. I only saw this once. There also has been a small red blotch on the bottom edge of some of the prints, this is new, so I am pretty sure I need this printer serviced. It still looks new and has been without all of the other issues I read about I would rather have this one fixed rather than an exchange.
The paper sensor supposedly senses the type of paper and sets the printing parameters accordingly as I understand this so far. I have never taken this printer apart, but I have done so on other printers. Has anyone replaced a paper sensor in a printer such as this? Maybe its not a big deal, but then again, maybe its better that a tech that does it all of the time should do it?
Today is Sunday after Christmas, i will call HP support, this week but any advice in the meantime.
    This question was solved.

The paper sensor is used when the paper type is set to "Automatic", you can override this by setting the paper type manually in the driver.

  • IW21 Retrieving the maintenance cycle text while creation of work order

    Hi Experts,
My requirement is to display the maintenance cycle text on the print preview while creating a work order via transaction IW21.
Since the print preview is clicked before saving the work order, the data from the work order has not been updated in the database tables (AFVC, PLWP).
Hence, the maintenance cycle text will have to be accessed through a runtime structure.
The text has to be fetched in a subroutine program which is called from the SAPscript.
I tried accessing the global data while debugging. However, the maintenance cycle text does not seem to be present.
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Anusha

It is inappropriate to produce a SAPScript prior to save, IMHO.  What prevents the user from changing something after the print preview was done in this case?
At any rate, you'll find that some data values, like document numbers, etc., are not set until the user has saved the document.   The document needs to be saved, and SAPScript generated at the end of that process.

  • Excessive INK LEVEL LOW warnings; Excessive PRINTER OFF LINE warnings on HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m

HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m Excessive INK LEVEL LOW Warnings: False PRINTER OFFLINE Warnings
I have the HP Photosmart Plus B209a-m, Lenovo T43 running XP SP3.
I love the print quality and the way it looks. But...it's very noisy and the big problem is:
When any one of the 4 ink cartridges gets to around 25%, the ink low warning , comes on, sometimes more than once per minute! And then it opens the LARGE dialogue box right in the middle of the screen showing me ink levels (none below 25% by the way), and  * soliciting me to buy ink from them on line or from a dealer or whatever.  I close it and the three warning boxes (Ink level low-two boxes simultaneously and Printer Offline)....Then a couple minutes later all them are back. This makes the computer basically unusable.
*These frequent (every few minutes)  PRINTER OFFLINE warnings occur even though it is on line. this is a wireless enabled printer. Despite the warning that it is offline, as soon as I issue a print command the printer responds (with the ink level warnings of course, while it's printing).
How can I disable (forever) the  OFFLINE and INK LEVEL warnings?

On the touchscreen of the printer
    touch setup
    touch preferences
    touch cartridge chip info
    then touch OK
    no more annoying pop-ups
    Note
To re-enable the usage information function, restore the factory defaults.
    Note
You can continue to use the cartridge in the HP product if you turn off the memory chip's ability to collect the product's usage information.

  • Yellow printing no black HP Photosmart 8250

Hi.  I've purchased new cartridges, recalibrated the printer (still prints gree and yellow only) did diagnostic tests (said everything was fine) , turned off the printer --HP Photosmart 8250-- and back on and still it won't print in black.  Even the Extended self test diagnostic pages are unreadable--in super light yellow ink--but it's a brand new black (and all) cartridges, and yes they are HP cartridges.  Please help!  Thx!
