Photosmart B8850 Printer and Premium Plus Paper

On the HP Shopping page for paper supplies for this printer, one of the papers sold is the Premium Plus.
In the User Manual for the printer it states:
NOTE: HP Premium and HP Premium Plus Photo papers are not supported with this printer
Can someone resolve this inconsistency for me?  Is there a printer profile for this printer - paper combination that is recommended?
What I have tried:
The printer paired with Advanced Paper (the first choice on the HP Shopping paper page) and an Advanced profile looks very satisfactory.  The Premium Plus paper and the Advanced profile looks mediocre at best.  The Premium Plus paper with a Premium Paper profile looks bad, as does the Premium Plus paper and a HP8750-Premium Plus profile.  And I also tried the Premium Plus paper with a profile labeled HP8850_CMAdvPaper, also with about the same mediocre result as the Advanced Profile.
Are there any better options out there?
I have five boxes of Premium Plus paper of the B+ size that I would like to use, motivating my question.

Completely agree. I have the old kind on a roll and compared - color totally different, streaks show from printing - hate it! If anyone knows where to buy the old kind, I'd be so grateful.

Just bought a 8500a, when printing a photo on HP Premium Plus paper, the prints come out  flat, not glossy.
On my old HPL7680 a photo w/same paper come out glossy & shiny. This maybe what should be expected w/8500A and is not a problem w/the printer. The 8500A is set to advanced photo paper, best quality. I worked w/HP tech support and was told to send back to the Amazon where I bought it for replacement. But if this is not really a defective printer than it doesn't make sense to send it back. I also purchased a HP C510 Photosmart and the quality on photos is excellent, so I have solved my photo printing problems per say. Has anyone else noticed lack luster, non shiny photos coming from the 8500A?
My thought process was that if the L7680 printed a shiny, glossy photo, then the 8500A should too. But this may not be what I should expect...
IS MY 8500A DEFECTIVE OR JUST WHAT SHOULD BE EXPECTED FROM AN OFFICEJET PRINTER AS OPPOSED TO A PHOTOSMART PRINTER.
    thx Jim

The Officejet 8500 uses pigmented inks which have different characteristics than dye based inks.  HP Premium Plus paper is not really very suitable with pigmented inks, a better choice would be HP Advanced Photo paper.

  • Premium Plus paper problem

I use a HP D7160 printer, HP inks and HP paper. I have done thousands of B&W prints using Premium Plus 280gm paper (usually Type Q1786A) and got very good results . This is not made now and I bought some CR674a paper which gives a very poor result. There is a red overall tint which I can't adjust out and it is muddy overall. What paper can I use that will give as good a result as the old rough backed stuff like Q1786A?
I tried HP's customer service by e-mail and they gave me an irrelevant reply, then spent 40 minutes on the phone to them trying to speak to a paper expert but just got passed from pillar to post. Are there any B&W experts ou there?

    Hi beantowner2,
I would like to begin with a few questions,
Does this happen when you copy a photo, or only when you print form the computer?
Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or a surge protector?
What operating system and version is on the computer?
Is the printer connected to the computer with a USB cable or wirelessly?
If you have a WIndows operating system please download and install the latest firmware version for the printer. HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g_n Firmware.
If you are using a surge protector, I suggest disconnecting and connecting the power directly to a wall outlet.

  • HP Photosmart c4450 prints and scans normal 8.5x11 fine, but will not print 4x6 laminate pictures.

HP Photosmart c4450 prints and scans normal 8.5x11 fine, but will not print 4x6 laminate pictures. Using the printer completely unconnected from a pc or network, using a SSD memory card to print off. As the printer begins the print, the printer prints only about 3/4 of the image, and clips the rest leaving it blank. Within the options, you can see the whole picture on the LCD screen, and selecting the 4x6 print mode it still clips the picture.
Not sure exactly whats going on, the printer was doing this fine for about a year, and just randomly started to print with the image cut off at the beging and ending abruptly at the end only printing half-3/4's. Also using the same memory card, have not tried a different card though. Any ideas?

As far as I know,  you cannot scan or perform software-based copying over a Bluetooth connection. Printing is doable. Perhaps that is something that is in the pipe for developement.

  • Hp photosmart 6510 printing and photocopying blank pages even after putting in new ink cardridges

    Hi there, can anyone help?
My photosmart 6510 has recently started printing and photocopying blank pages.  The ink cardridges were low and I have replaced them with new ones. I have cleaned the printer head and the test comes out in colour.
I have no idea what to do other than buy a new one !
    Any advice appreciated.

    Hi @TG13,
I'd like to help. Please begin with the steps in the following document; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Deskjet Ink Advantage an...  < this applies to the 6510, and 6515 too.
If you complete, or have already completed all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video.  I only suggest doing this if the printer is out of warranty; How to fix a HP Printer, not printing black ink and missing colours
Based on the comments, it looks like this will help

I tried most of the suggestions in this thread, but stopped short of disassembling the print head. Nothing worked until I saw the video referenced in Sunshyn2005's message. That did work, but not on my first try. For the second attempt, I left the wet paper towels in place for a couple of hours to really soak the print heads. That did the trick.
So, thank you Sunshyn2005, for pointing me to the solution.   - Source
Although the printer might be out of warranty, if the issue persists, HP may be able to offer you something. Maybe they can offer you a discount on an alternate model. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
If this resolves the issue, please let me know so we can help others who may be experiencing the same issue.

  • Photosmart B209a Printer and HP364XL cartridges

    Afternoon all,
This one has baffled me and I can't find any answers online anywhere so hoping you can help...
I have a Photosmart B209a All in One printer. The shopping card that came with it specifies that the cartridges that can be used with it are HP364 and HP364XL (for all colour and black cartridges). So I bought a black HP364XL as it was more economical.
The cartridges are lined up as Magenta, Cyan, Yellow and Black from left to right. There are little symbols on each slot to tell you which cartridge to put where. All good so far. The cartridges that came with it aren't the XL version and the black cartridge is about twice as wide as the colour ones (even though none are XLs). When the new XL cartridge came, it is half the size of the normal black cartridge that is already in there (so the same size as the colour ones), and just won't fit in the slot. Underneath the cartridges just between where the pull tab (to eject the cartridge) is and the metal chip, there is a hole on the cartridge that is currently in there. The XL cartridge doesn't have that hole so it won't slot all the way down.
So it is obviously not meant to go in that place.
So I was wondering - have HP made a mistake and teh XL cartridges just don't fit. Or, have I got a duff XL cartridge. Or, is the black XL cartridge supposed to be used on its own or something, and goes in one of the other slots where the colour cartridges currently sit?
I'm confused on this one. All the cartridges are genuine HP and I've never had problems like this with other printers.
Anyone able to shed some light on it?
    Thanks,
    Sarah

Thank you very much HP! I had the same problem when I bought a 364XL (photo) cartridge for my Photosmart B109 printer. Now I have to buy another cartridge because it's the wrong one - which I've unwrapped so I can't send it back. [snip]
I would suggest you Contact HP, explain the situation and ask for an exchange.

  • HP Photosmart A616 Printer and Time Capsule

I am having a problem printing to my HP Photosmart printer hooked up to the printer server function on my Time capsule. It was working fine from all the computers until I did the Upgrade to the Time Capsule. Now the A616 printer will not print from the server but does work when connected directly to the individual computers. Any suggestions...
    Thanks,

I haven't seen any report that the latest upgrade messed up USB printing but it would not surprise me.
Do a factory reset of the TC.. setup again.. but use all SMB names. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Also use the 5.6 airport utility rather than v6 since the later one has no controls for printer.
Google for loading that version into Mountain lion if you run it.
No joy just go back to earlier firmware. IMHO 7.5.2 is far better version for a Gen3 TC anyway..
Do a factory reset again after you downgrade and setup the TC as above.
Then setup the computers again to print to network printer, which might mean having to remove the existing printer setup if you have been using the printer locally.

  • HP Photosmart B8550, Premium Plus Photo paper - Ink refuses to dry.

Hello, hopefully someone can suggest a work-around for my rather frustrating problem.
I create and sell prints of my vector artwork. I have no complaints about the printer's capability to produce vibrant, crisp images.
However, when I used to use the printer to print off art scans of watercolor paintings/ ink drawings/ etc, I never had the problem of the ink not drying rather fast.
My vector artwork is bold and usually flat areas of color. For example, the majority of the recent page I printed was a solid, bright, sky blue.
The print -looked- awesome, better than I had hoped.
It sat in the output tray for a day, day and a half. I picked it up to slide it into a protective sleeve.
Noticed my thumb actually -took ink off- the paper, leaving an orange-ish pink, deep, and crystal clear thumb print. I knew the print was totally ruined at that point, so I wanted to see if maybe it was something on my hands. Washed and dried them, went back to handle the print. The black inks wouldn't budge, only the colors, and they were almost "tacky" to the touch, even after a couple days.
To me, that's really weird, especially when using the Premium Plus paper, and these being dye based 564 ink cartridges. I would think there's be nothing "sticky" to leave behind when the paper absorbed the dye. It's almost like the inks went down a lot thicker than normal.
I have made no changes to "print quality" settings, as I never found a different between "best" and "normal" I keep them set to normal, and the ink coverage also at normal.
Prints looks great, but I need them to be long lasting and dry, certainly more handleable than 3 days and sticky/tacky.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I have the B8550 too, and I just assumed that since it's a fairly high-end printer, it would support the highest-end HP photo paper (i.e., Premium Plus).  However, the manual states:
HP Premium and HP Premium Plus photo papers are not supported with this product.
Now, I don't know if that means you shouldn't use it, or that the advanced features won't work, or ??? Or if you should use it, what settings to use (since that type of paper is not listed in the options on the drop-down menu.)  I have used the Premium Plus Soft Gloss without any problems.  But HP seems to think that the highest quality paper you can use with this printer is "Advanced," which is their third-grade paper.  Not exactly what I'd expect from this type of printer.

  • How do I set the print and paper size in iPhoto 5

Can somebody please help. How do you set up iPhoto 5 so that you define both the the size of the print and the photo paper you use?
For example, I wish to print a 4.5cm x 3.5 cm photo on 6x4 (or 15cm x 10cm to keep all the units the same) paper.
I've seen a post saying how to do it in iPhoto 8, but the drop-downs are different.

I do not remember the locations in iPhoto 5 but there are probably three places to mess with
1 - set the paper size
2 - set the print size
3 - set the paper tray for the printer to use that has the paper size that you set in step 1
these may be in the print sequence or under the file menu as page set up (or similar). If these are not obvious try the Help menu
