Photosmart C309g - Scanner session fails to open on Mac

I've had this printer (all-in-one) for a few years.  It has always been troublesome, unreliable, flakey.  Firstly, the much talked about networking issues.  I think I've fixed that, for printing at least.  Now the scanner, which has worked intermittently, will not work at all - I mean, when I open up the System Prefs > Print Fax > Scan > Open Scanner - it fails to open session.
I have just dumped the old HP software, downloaded the whole installation again and reinstalled.  HP Scan just doesn't even find the device.  And when I try to scan from the printer to the Mac, the Open in Preview plug-in 'Unexpectedly Quits' every time.  This printer/scanner has been an expensive mistake.  Soooo frustrating!  I have searched the Forums, but could only find one other relevant question on this, from 2009 and the only suggestion there was to 'reinstall', which i have done.  The HP drivers for Mac seem really poor.
Any suggestions/known bugs/fixes out there?

Hi,
Please clarify your Mac OS X version, that can be found by clicking the Apple icon and then About this Mac.

ok...i'm not sure how at all...but, a couple hours have passed since i posted this and while i was hoping someone would reply i was finishing up some old work on my old, extremely slow emac. anyways, i decided to go ahead and try to install leopard again from the normal standard method. (which is just clicking the icon once the leopard install window comes up). Guess what? now it's 50% into the installation!! i don't want to count my chickens before they hatch...especially after some of the discussions i've read about leopard so far...but, i'm hopeful
who knows how...i'm clueless and it doesn't make much sense to me. but, i'll come back and let anyone who cares know how the install went.
note for anyone with similar problems:
another strange fix to the 'leopard dvd ejecting on install' is to let the dvd chill in the drive for a couple hours...then try it again. HAHAHAHAHA!!!! worked for me

  • Adobe Updater fails to Open on Mac?

On the Top Grey Menu at the top of my Mac, there is always a notification saying that there is one update for adobe
There is a logo of Adobe with a number 1 next to it
When I click on it, I can choose "Open Updater"
but whenever I click it, the updater logo only BLINKS in the bottom menu and fails to open
I am wondering how can I fix the issue.
Before that, one time I tried to remove flash player in my Mac, maybe I wrongly removed some important files but I don't know
Thanks for helping solve my problem.

If you can not update from Help>Updates, you can either wait to see if the server comes back up (the typical problem), or do the downloads. In general, the updates should be installed in order. If you download from the most recent back, you can check if there are any that can be skipped. You only need to reboot after the last update. Now, That is the process for the PC, but I expect the process is the same for the MAC. The MAC may require the individual reboots, I am not sure. May be better to do all and not be sorry later.

how do I fix an error message of "failed to open a session on this devices" for my HP photosmart 6510 scanner?

    Hello Kwastfamily,
It sounds like you are unable to print from your computer to your printer. I would run through the troubleshooting steps in this article:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3147
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Failed to open a session on the device

I recently updated my hp printer to version 3.0.  I tried to scan a document but no longer can.  I have uninstalled my printer (hp Photosmart C5280 all-in-one) and installed it again.  I keep getting message that it has failed to open a session on the device.  PLEASE HELP!  My scanner was working fine before this last hp printer software update.

Welcome to the forums CKamm1 and @MissOctober ,
I read about the issue you are both having with your printers and seeing the message "Failed to open a session on the device". I have some links and suggestions that may help you both below.
If either of you are connected to a Mac computer, try these steps in order:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart the Mac
    Re-add the printer
If you are on a Windows OS, please run the Print and Scan Doctor and let me know the results from running this diagnostic tool.
Also, if either of you are still having an issue, let me know which OS X or Windows OS you're running and if your printer is making copies successfully.
    Thank you

  • Failed to Open a Session on the Device - scanning from Mac OSX 10.9.3 - M1217nfw

    Hello,
I'm running into some issues scanning wirelessly from our HP LaserJet M1217nfw MFP from any Mac running 10.9.3. I've tried to "Reset Printing System" and re-adding the printer with no success. Each time I open either Preview/Printers & Scanners/Image Capture, I receive the following error message: "Failed to Open a Session on the Device." When I add the printer, I do so by selecting the "+" icon, and selecting "Add Printer or Scanner..." selecting the printer from the list listed via bonjour, and "Select the software" but my model printer is not listed. The closest printer listed is HP LaserJet Professional M1210nf MPF Series, but it doesn't work. Any ideas here?

Welcome to the HP Forums jpuebla,
I see by your post that you are having issues scanning, you aren't able find the drivers to add the printer.
I can help you with this issue.
The drivers for Maverick are the Apple Update drivers.
OS X v10.9 Mavericks: Installing and Using the Printer on a Mac.
Repair the Disk Permissions on the Mac:
    Close all applications.
On the Apple menu bar, click Go, click Applications and then click Utilities.
    Double-click Disk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left.
Click Verify and then Repair Disk Permissions.
    Restart the computer.
    Reset the Printing System:
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
Click the Apple icon ( ), and then click System Preferences.
    Click Printers & Scanners.
Right-click (or Ctrl +click) in the left white side panel, then click Reset printing system.
Click OK to confirm the reset.
Type the correct Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system.
Then click the + sign, then select the printer from the list and click on the Add button.
(make sure it shows the printer name beside Use, not the Airprint driver)
You might have to run the Apple Updates again with USB cable connected to get the drivers installed.
Then try and add the bonjour printer again.
    Test the printer again.
If you are having network issues, then add the printer through the IPProtocal.
After clicking the  + button, select the IP icon across the top, type in the printer's IP address, select jet direct below and then Apply.
    Test the printer.
I have seen the HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X drivers work successfully, if the issue persists.
If you need further assistance, let me know.
    Have a nice day!
    Thank You.

  • Officejet J3680, Failed to open a session on the device

Officejet J3680, connected by USB to Mac Mini with OS X 10.9.5.
It had been working fine for a long time, but now scanning is broken.  Printing still works fine.  Full functionality (both print and scan) works fine if I connect the USB cable to my MacBook Pro with same OS.
Specifically, I get the error message "Failed to open a session on the device."  This occurs for all types of attempted access (Preview, Image Capture, System Preferences> Printers & Scanners> Scan> Open Scanner...)
I have tried various solutions, up to and including a full uninstall and reinstall, with reboots of both computer and printer.
Apple Software Update (in App Store) indicates that I successfully installed HP Printer Software Update Version 3.0.
Printing System has been Reset multiple times.
Any clues?  It is super-frustrating that it works on my laptop, but not the desktop (where it is intended to be attached.)

    Hi James!
Thanks for getting back to me, and yes you're correct and forgive me for overlooking that the printer is working with other devices.
    Here are some more suggestions:
Remove the print driver by following these steps first:  Sunshyn2005: FRUSTRATED!!! HP 6700 Scanning feature not working with my MAC
Complete a manual uninstall next: Sunshyn2005: Re: Scan Definition

  • Trying to open scanner session....

Like many others, I have an HP Deskjet F380 all-in-one. Printing is fine. Trying to scan, I get 2 messages.
1- Trying to open scanner session
2- failed to open a session on the device
I assume, eventually, there will be a fix from HP?

I solved my own problem, sort of. I reinserted my Snow Leopard installation disk and then went to the Optional Installs package. One of the Custom Installs available there is Printer Support. I loaded "All Available Printers," after which Mac OS recognized my HP 6310. So, apparently, there are drivers in the optional installations package that don't get loaded automatically with the basic Snow Leopard install. Perhaps the missing drivers can also be obtained through Software Update. I did that too, but can't tell if it affected my connection since the scanner worked both before and after I updated the HP software.
In OS 10.5, I typically scanned using Acrobat. Even though my scanner is now working, Acrobat can't find it. This is odd because if I scan through the Print & Fax screen in System Preferences, I can scan to Acrobat. After the scan, Acrobat opens and shows the scanned image in neat old .pdf format. But it won't scan directly, and the System Preferences route takes a lot of extra key strokes. I long for the old HP Director.

  • [Solved] VirtualBox Failed to open a session

I've also added the following to /etc/rc.conf

I've also added my username to  vboxusers
When I start a session in virtualbox i get the following error message-------------

Any ideas why the VT-x features would be locked or unavailable?
I've tried 3 different iso images but every time I get the same error.
Thanks in Advance I'm certain I must have missed a step at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox

DSpider solved my problem. I had Enabled VT-x/AMD-V which caused the conflict.
Once I unchecked the box everything worked perfectly.

  • Can't connect my HP Photosmart c309g-m printer to my Linksys WRT54GC router. "No filtering = FAIL"

I'm having trouble connecting my HP Photosmart c309g-m to my Linksys WRT54GC router.  The diagnostics report states "No filtering = FAIL" in all my attempts.
First I had set up the wireless security of the router with a WPA2 Personal passphrase.
Because that didn't work, I downgraded my security to WPA, since the diagnostics report suggests that that's what it's actually using for encryption. This didn't work either.
I double and triple checked the MAC address of the printer in my Wireless MAC filter settings. It was correct. However, it still didn't connect.
Grudgingly, I turned MAC filtering off. However, the printer still wouldn't connect.
Now I'm out of options. Any possible ideas for this problem?
    This question was solved.

    Here are a few ideas:
    1. Make sure the SSID is being broadcast.
    2. Make sure that DHCP is active.
    3. Do not use MAC filtering (it is not a good security measure, anyway).
    4. Change the router channel to 11.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

RE: Firewall on each Mac on a small Network
If you have your own Router, and  you are getting your "strictly local" IP Address from your Router using DHCP, enabling the Firewall on each Mac is generally not necessary. Unsolicited Internet requests are discarded by the Router, and never make it onto your local network.
If your single Mac is connected directly to the Internet (not through a Router you control) and has an Internet-visible IP Address, then you MUST enable the Firewall on that Mac to keep intruders out.
Strictly-local IP Addrresses  are in these ranges:
    IANA-reserved private IPv4 network ranges
    Start
    End
    No. of addresses

  • HP Photosmart 3310 - Scanner not working over Bonjour since 2.1 update

My HP3310 is connected to my Time Capsule via Ethernet to allow it to be used by my iMac and a Macbook.
After I updated to OSX 10.6 I had a few problems but eventually I was able to get my 3310 working as a printer and a scanner with both Macs connected as described.
This last weekend following installation of the HP printer Driver 2.1 update, the scanner no longer works as connected. I just get the message "failed to open scanner". I tried removing the device and re-installing as described throughout the various threads but nothing works. If I connect the 3310 via USB to my iMac or Macbook then the scanner works but not on the Time Capsule with Bonjour. This has only happened since the 2.1 update was applied which was preceded by the OSX 10.6.1 update.
Anyone with a similar problem that they fixed? If so how did you fix it?

    All,
First off, the HP Photosmart 3310 is supported in Snow Leopard with the In-OS scanning solution. This allows you to scan through Preview, Image Capture, the Print & Fax control panel, and your printer browser. Some details are available on [this|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3771] link (and hopefully the scan document linked to within this page will go live again soon), other information is on [this|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&lc=en&dlc=e n&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=439491] link.
Second, HP Scan Pro and HP Device Manager are NOT supported under Snow Leopard. Do not install the full solution under Snow Leopard, and if you have, I'd suggest deleting these two items. A full solution installer for the Photosmart 3310 that will include HP Scan (scan software compatible with Snow Leopard) should be available later in October.
    Just trying to help.
    Andrew
