PhotoSmart C4795 Behaving Oddly when not in use

Hello,
My printer prints fine, but between jobs it will suddenly advance itself through the scan, print, and copy menus, insisting that it needs a memory card or that I need to place an image to scan, etc.  It moves between the menus of its own accord.
We've tried turning it off and resetting it, but the problem has continued, and the issue with the revolving menues happens whether we print or not.  It even does it when no one is at the computer.  We can be off watching television and hear it beeping as it goes to the next screen.
As I'm guessing that I don't have a ghost in my printer, what is wrong with my machine, and how do I fix it?
Thanks,
MasySyma

Hi,
I would be guessing that you don't have a "ghost" either... but you never know....
How long have you had the printer? When completing the alignment phase after inserting new cartridges, did you scan the alignment page to finish the alignment process?  Here are the steps to do this if you haven't.... sometimes not completing this phase causes strange behaviors.  Step 8 of this document:
Setting up your product
The other thing that might help solve this is the Print Diagnostic tool.  I am attaching a link to the "Diagnostic Tools" document and you can choose to download the Print one.

  • Trackpad behaves oddly when firewire is used

All of a sudden my trackpad start to behave oddly when I have a firewire device connected. Specifically a MOTU Ultralite mk3 hybrid paired with a MOTU ultralite mk3 firewire. The problem started yesterday when I launch Logic Pro X. a minutes after the trackpad starts to be unresponsive and the pointer moving in wrong direction or jumping.
I tried to reset the PRAM with no luck. Even worst, when I tried to boot the macbook pro after rebooting the system freezes on the logo screen when the firewire port is used with that device. when I disconnect the firewire port the problem totally goes away.

    RE: Guiness (nee Harpoon) Solution
Perhaps it is now time for the Harpoon solution (aka the Guinness solution in the mid and far west)
for those not in the know:
    1. turn everything off.
    2. unplug firewire cables
    3. unplug power cords
    4. get up from well worn chair
    5. walk to refrigerator
    6. open refrigerator
    7. remove bottle of Harpoon (Guinness, local micro brew, etc)
    8. pop cap
    9. pour into glass ( you AREN'T going to drink it from a bottle, are you?)
    10. sip responsibly. enjoy the moment. think pure thoughts
    11. return to kitchen. If less than 15 minutes has elapsed, have another. Otherwise, retrurn to edit room.
    12. Plug everything back together
    12. fire up external monitors, VTR, external hard drives & computer in that order.
Does it work now? If yes, congratulate your self. If not, oh well, but at least you are in a much better frame of mind to begin some serious troubleshooting.
    cheerios,

  • Set 2520 printer to turnoff when not in use

How do you set the printer to sleep when not in use?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Page 65 of your User Guide has all the information.
The HP Photosmart Energy Save Mode reduces energy use by entering a sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity.
The time to sleep mode can be extended to 10 or 15 minutes.
NOTE: This feature is on by default and cannot be turned off.
    To set Energy Save Mode
    1. Touch the Setup icon.
    2. Touch Preferences.
    3. Scroll through the options and touch Energy Save Mode.
    4. Touch the desired time interval (5, 10 or 15 minutes).

  • Should I turn off my Mac Pro when not in use or leave it running?

I have been told I should never turn off my computer by some people, and others say that I should always turn it off when not in use!  I use my Mac Pro primarily for music recording/editing in my home studio or word processing.  Now that I have an iPad I use that for web browsing, email, FBing, etc. and I find myself on my Mac Pro a lot less.  I get the basis behind both trains of thought; those who leave it on feel always stopping and starting up puts unnecessary wear on the moving disks, and those who shut down think if the parts are always moving they are bound to wear out faster.  I am not as concerned with conserving power as I am with keeping my machine safe!  If you have any information on this topic I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Providing you have a robust firewal and are not worried as a result about being hacked then leave it turned on and allow it to sleep. Make sure you allow the screen to sleep as well a that is the item that is more prone to damage by being left on all the time.
I never turn my machine off, never have with any of my Macs ever since my first one back in 1979-ish and have never suffered any adverse affects. Today, the power drain is so small when allowed to sleep that I doubt they would offend even the ardent 'turn off everything and pull out the plug to save the planet' person.
If you have an iPad or iPod synced with the Mac for email and iCal and address Book etc. then if you leave it on it should be up to date as soon as you return home, mine is anyway. With iCloud coming out very soon that may come into play even more so with all its advance pushing etc. Just a thought.
One advantage in leaving the machine on (sleep) is that you can access it from anywhere in the world should the need arise with the appropriate settings, which you can't if you turn it off.
    Leave it on.

  • Am I supposed to leave the display plugged in when not in use?

should the display be left plugged in when not in use? is it just like leaving the power cord to the MacBoold Pro plugged in when the computer is off?
    thanks

Sure, you can leave the display plugged into the socket, provided you turn OFF the display itself. There must be somewhere some switch or touch button that will turn the display OFF.
Usually, those displays use a lot of power, so it's better to save
I shall add an unrequested piece of advice: if you don't this already, please use some kind of electrical surge protector
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surge_protector> to connect your computer, display, printer, router, etc to the wall socket.

  • IPhone resets itself when not in use

I have an original iPhone which has been updated to 3.0. Since the update I've noticed that the phone will spontaneously restart itself when not in use. When this happens I'll notice the screen light up with the silver Apple logo and then go blank. This will happen repeatedly. While this is going on I can't use the phone until I plug it into the computer. Once iTunes does it's thing the phone will return to normal for a while - sometimes a day or two - before repeating this behavior. I have reset and restored the phone but without solving the problem. Apart from this everything seems to be working properly.
    Any ideas?

Have you tried restoring and setting up as a new phone (i.e., not restoring from a backup)? Sometimes those backups bring along whatever is messing up your phone.

  • When To and when NOT to use cursors

Can anyone please refer to a good resource about When to and When NOT to use cursors.
I have search on line but I haven't find anything really good.
    Thank you.
    H

If you can do it in a single SQL statement (one UPDATE or whatever), that will almost always be more efficient than a loop construct.
If you absolutely need a loop, bulk operations (BULK COLLECT, FORALL) will be more efficient than row-by-row processing for any significant number of rows.
If it is a relatively small number of rows, I would then weigh up the simplicity of a Cursor FOR loop (although Regarding the creation of simple cursors).
btw I loved that comedy Forms 3 article, but surely April 1st isn't until Saturday?

  • IMac (Oct 2009) keeps shutting down and restarting when not being used.

At least once a day, usually when not being used, I will see a dialog box that say computer had to restart due to a problem. data in problem report does not clearly state problem - many multi-page entries
    Have reinstalled OS 10.8.2 once
this morning tried to restart with safe boot and had spinning beach ball for more than 15 minutes. shut down and restarted nin recovery mode. verified and repaired permissions (all seem to be related to Canon Pronter plug-ins- had an error message yesteday asking if I wanted to repair printer software and I said yes). Printer seems to be working. Had one statement that indicated a screensaver issue-see below
a while back, iTunes album art screensaver hung up with just two album covers flipping in all rows and columns.
after a few restarts, it started working correctly again..- yesterday I set screen saver to never, but still had a crash this morning

Here's the latest panic report. BTW, I ran  for a while from an external system boot - very sloww (thumbdrive), but nothing happened. However, when I retarted I tried to restart in Safe Mode and the launch never completed (30 minutes without start)

  • My ext HDs spin too hard when not in use , how do I slow em up ?

some externals have the smarts about them but others just wizz too hard when not in use , old macs had a processor setting I could change  , but not MBP
I should be able to tell these HDs to chill till I call on them right ?   thanks for any help[ you can offer me .
    cheers R

You don't. You have no control over the spin rate of any hard drive.
To encourage the external drive(s) to spin down when they aren't in use, System Prefs > Energy Saver > check the box for "Spin down hard disks when possible." But you'll find that the OS checks in on those drives quite frequently, spinning them back up again. So the likelihood of their spinning down very often or ever staying quiescent for long is small.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.
Then plug it in and let it fully charge.

Sorry, there is no feature for that built into Firefox, and I haven't seen an add-on to add that feature to Firefox.

It will not come back on line and the only way out of this is to reboot the computer.

  • Leave iPhone in charger when not in use?

Can you overcharge an iPhone? Shall I keep it in the charger when not in use?
    Thanks!

You can not over charge the battery by leaving it plug in for long times.

  • Should I shut down my computer when not in use

should I shut down my computer when not in use, overnight for instance?

Hello! Leaving it on 24/7/365 is perfectly acceptable. You may save some electricity but personally I think you'll pay for it with a more troublesome system. I do however set the monitors to go to sleep. I like the no startup lag time of running 24/7/365. That said, if I lived in an area prone to electrical outages or if my location was prone to lightening strikes I'd probably shut it down and unplugged. Of course with it being unplugged the pram battery may run down. These old G4's have been running 24/7/365 for years now. I do try to restart every few weeks just for good measure! In the end it's your preference. The hardware works best when a constant temperature is maintained. Tom

  • I have a MAC OSX 10.6.8 Is it better to keep it in sleep mode when not in use or shutting down?

Mac OSX 10.6.8  Should I keep it in sleep mode when not in use to shut down?

My experience with electronic tends to revolve around thermo stress, and removing all power vs going to sleep tends to be more or less the same.  Many components have power totally taken away, and others use so little power they cool off.
However, I found thermo stress occurs a lot more with discrete electronic components  (like back in the '80s and our VAX-11/780's which had lot more discrete components) and less with integrated circuits.  NOTE: I'm not talking about overheating components, just normal heating/cooling cycles.
All in all I would not worry about it.  The OP (Grace 1) should use whatever method is most convent for her.  And I would say if she is using a Macbook Air or the new Macbook Pro Retna display (or any other Mac with a solid state drive (SSD)), then booting from shutdown may not take all that long anyway.
