Photosmart c6180 behaving strangely

My Photosmart c6180 (on a Dell Precision M4400 laptop, 2.53ghz, 18 months old, Windows XP sp3/quad core/4.0 GB  memory/68% HD available/ZoneAlarm firewall and antivirus, I run virus/spyware scans frequently using ZA and Advanced System Optimizer/disk defragmented 24/7 using Diskeeper) will only print full document content in "fast draft" mode, and fast draft is about one fourth the speed it used to be. In other print modes (automatic, fast normal,  normal, best) it will, for example, print the outlines of forms (when printing from a .pdf document or from QickBooks) but no text within the form. In automatic, normal, fast normal, best, It will not print text at all from Word or WordPerfect, onlyl prints text when in fast draft mode. It will not print text copied and pasted to Notepad, again, except in fast draft mode and even that is also very slow.
The HP diagnostics "Test Page" colors print fine (I have consumed half a cartridge of each color printing test pages), but there is no text (not sure if that page even has text). The HP "Diagnostic Page" prints the header text and the big color boxes fine, and the outline of the form, again consuming lots of ink, but the text within the document is a very light blue, so light it is unreadable though it is there. On one of the test pages it prints the Windows logo in the upper left, but nothing else.
When trying to print text documents the printer sounds like and acts like it is printing. The printer head moves over the page and the paper moves, slowly, through the printer but the paper has no print when it comes out. The printer has also become extremely slow when attempting to print in anything other than fast draft and that is even much slower than it once was.
I have already done the following:
     1) changed the USB cable, and then changed the USB port. Nothing changed.
     2) uninstalled all HP software and drivers and reinstalled all new. Took four attemptes and 18 hours, but once  finally   up and running......no change.
     3) I have gone through the Windows printer troubleshooting Q&A, no help.
Would very much appreciate your help, I have exhausted the limits of my trouble shooting skills.

So gald I'm not the only one. I have been fighting this crappy HP printer for MONTHS also. Everything says a OK goody goody but printer fails to print every two to three weeks.

  • HP Photosmart C6180 printer. Says the magenta ink cartridge is empty when it is new.

I own a HP Photosmart C6180 printer.  It sat for several months so I replaced all of the ink cartridges.  It will not print because it says the magenta ink cartridge is empty.  It is brand new and i can see the ink inside of it.  I am not sure what to do.  I don't want to take it to get serviced as I live several hours from any computer or printer repair shop.  Please help!

    Hi pbeck39
What are the ink levels like on a self test page - are they good? Are you using Win XP x64 by any chance?

  • Follow-up to HP Photosmart C6180 Scan Problem

I posted the below a few days ago and since then have spoken with a few people who have experienced the same difficulty. We came to the conclusion this problem began after a recent driver update from Apple (sorry we can't remember exactly which one-about a month or so ago we think). Again any comments/suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!
Until recently I have been able to scan wirelessly to my iMac G5 using my HP Photosmart C6180 which is equipped with a wireless card. (wireless network being run on Belkin router) However, about 3 weeks ago, every time I try to scan I get an error message saving the scanner cannot be initialized. If I desire to scan, I must connect directly using USB cable and initiate scan from the HP. Any assistance/suggestions will be most welcomed.

I have been working on this for months and tripped over the solution today - it works on all models * OS's and is network related.
    Fix as follows:
    1. Open HP Device manager program
    2. Select maintain printer form info & settings drop down - this open printer utility
    3. Click open embedded web server
    4. Select Networking tab - from connections menu select wireless
    5. Click advanced button
    6. Go to bottom of page and check ALL "compatibility" check boxes
I just scanned a 50 page document and so did a friend with same problem with a new all-in-one and windows XP pro - same problem - same fix.

  • HP Photosmart C6180 won't scan

Please could someone talk me thru how to add scanning software to my Mac? I am new to Mac.
This printer works great with the pre-installed drivers that came with the Mac. But I can't scan at all.
I think there is a new driver which I can get from Hp website. Presumably it covers printing and scanning. Do I have to uninstall the pre-existing driver for this printer from the Mac first? If so how do I do this? Where is the uninstaller?
Has anyone out there actually been through this process for this printer and operating system? And did it actually work OK?
Thanks very much for all help and advice you can give. I just don't want to mess up the Mac or the beautiful printing I am currently getting, only to end up with nothing working properly - or even at all!

Hi. I just got a new iMac and I am new to Macs. I have the HP Photosmart C6180 printer too. Previously I had a Dell Pc and everything worked fine. I downloaded the software for the MAc from hp and installed. Printing works great. However, I tried to scan last night and it wouldn't work. HP Scan Pro gives the error that the scanner could not be initialized. I then opened the HP Device Manager and opened the Network Settings Utility. I picked "scan" from the left side of the Home page and then "Preview". My picture was displayed but again the scan feature wouldn't work. I also tried scanning from the printer console to the computer. It said it was scanning in the console window, but nothing happened. I can still scan FINE to my kids PCs in my house.
PLEASE help. So far I have been impressed with Macs but this is the first major problem I have had. I only had my Mac for a few weeks.
    Thanks!!

    Hi Gary,
Unfortunately, it sounds like the hardware has failed. I can't recommend any other solutions that you haven't already tried. The next step would be to service or replace your printer.
    Service:
Determine if your product is in warranty or out of warranty. If you need help determining your product’s warranty status, go to HP’s Warranty Check Tool .
If your product is in warranty , contact HP support.
If your product is out of warranty , click here to view additional printer support options starting as low as $20.
    Replacement:
Consider taking advantage of HP's Trade-In program: http://www.hp.com/united-states/tradein/home_flash.html

TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Photosmart C6180 prints too many copies of PDFs and HTML-documents

    Hi,
My Photosmart C6180 prints multiple copies of documents even if I haven't asked for it. This seems to only apply to PDFs and HTML-documents, I haven't seen it happen with Word/Excel. It's not consistent, it happens most of the time but now always for these documents. When I look at the console, when it has started printing I see shortly the status "Printing - Restarting". That's probably when it starts the 2nd copy. Sometimes it stops by itself, other times it seems to be looping and I have to turn the printer off and delete the document from the queue.
HP solution center SW is updated, I run Vista with latest service packs on a Thinkpad T400s.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

My C6180 printed multiple copies of any document from my Vista OS laptop ( wireless connection ), but not from my
XP OS desktop ( USB connection), even though I selected 1 copy on the print menu. Unchecking "Enable bidirectional support" in the Properties / Ports dialog box solved the problem. Hope this helps someone too.

  • How to install additional drivers for a shared photosmart c6180?

Hi, i am running windows 7 x64 and i have shared a photosmart c6180 on the pc.  I need to add additional 32bit drivers so that pc's that run xp 32 bit can print to the shared printer (i cannot connect these other pc's directly to the printer via network).  any way, under the sharing tab in printer properties, i can click on 'additional drivers' and choose x86, but then it asks for a driver location.  what location do i specify?  i've already tried c:\windows and c:\windows\system32, but it does not pick up any drivers at those locations.  i've also downloaded all of the latest drivers from the hp site, but when i run the executable and specify their extracted locations, for example, c:\users\user1\appdata\temp\7Z139A\, it does not see any drivers there either.
    any help is greatly appreciated!
    thanks!
    -s.

You wont be able to use exiting Win XP drivers on windows 7. You need to get new drivers for Windows 7, and install them as per your convenience, ie manually or automate it via script GP

  • Has anyone ever encountered layer blend modes behaving strangely?

I use photoshop quite a bit for retouching and photo compositing. Tonight I encountered a strange problem. I was trying to create a vintage look on a photo and had a number of adjustment layers including a curves, levels, color fill and there were also a few texture/noise layers all set to varying opacities. Near the top of all this I had a vignette layer that was black around the edges and white in the center set to blend mode of multiply. Well, when I was clicking on and off I realize that that vignette layer was definitely lightening the center part of the overall image quite a bit (the part that is white on the vignette layer), almost like a screen. So I flipped the vignette layer through different opacity modes and saw that there was no change in its behavior, every mode was screening the white, even darker color and multiply. I thought maybe it was interacting in a weird way with one of the other layers so I turned all the others off except the back ground-- still no change. Then I dropped the layer down one at time until it was below the background. When I started to move it up again, it was behaving normally for a moment until I moved it up a couple levels in the stacking order and then it went back to the screen behavior. Anyway I shuffled it around a bit but there was no consitency to when it would display the correct opacity and when it wouldn't, so it did not seem to be an interaction with any specific layer. I don't know, but I can't really think of any case where white set to multiply should produce a lighter result even if it were interacting with another opacity. In any case it does seem to me that there is something going on with the overall computation of opacities. I tried creating a new black and white layer and it was also doing the same thing, behaving strange and not displaying the correct opacity.
I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. I'm going to shut off the computer and hope this goes away when I reboot, but if it does not, does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not a regular visitor to this forum, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else has experienced anything like this. I've only got 5 gigs of ram on this computer and I've been working away for a while... maybe photoshop just couldn't keep up(?) I'm using Photoshop CS5, RGB Adobe 1998 colorspace.  I've never had anything like this happen in the last 11 years I've been using photoshop. Hmmm.... hope I don't have to reinstall or call support or worse. fingers crossed.

Nevermind. It is still having the problem. I have to think that this file is just corrupt somehow because I just opened another file and can't seem to cause the same problem. Basically, I can fill a layer with white, put it to a blend mode of multiply or darker color and it will block out everything of the image below, ie totally opaque. The opaqueness varies depending on the if there are other layers also on blend modes, but it does not seem to correspond to normal blend mode interaction. If I put it right on top of a regular layer with an image on it, it totally blocks it out on a blend mode of multiply... weird. I am going to scrap this file and see if the problem recurs in other files. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting some years on it and has been running pretty slow. I'm not a hardware expert but I've done everything I know how to do to maintain it. Was thinking of upping the ram to see if I can hold out a bit longer before I upgrade the computer. Wouldn't surprise me if this problem is related to the computer.

  • Metronome behaving strangely

When I press the record button in GB 3.0.4 The level meter displays a pulsing level, but I hear no sound for the metronome until I depress a key on my MIDI keyboard. This remains true whether I have it set to "Count In" or not. Another curious problem is that if I set the metronome to play during both Playback and Recording, I don't hear it during playback, until it reaches a region. For example, if I start playing from m. 1 but no instruments enter until m. 2, I don't hear the click start until after the instruments enter.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas what might be causing it?
    Thanks,
    Michael

Hangtime, thanks for your help, but the issue isn't the volume of the metronome. Normal GB functionality is that if you have Metronome selected to be "on," then when you click on the Record button you immediately hear the metronome, as well as see the click registering on the meter. I don't hear it, even though it is registering on the meter, until I depress a key on my MIDI keyboard. Then I hear it just fine. I've been working with this software since version 1 came out, and I've never had this problem before. I also have Sibelius, Logic, and Reason, so I am wondering if I may have unknowingly tweaked some setting that is making MIDI in GB behave strangely.

  • Why is my MacBook display behaving strangely?

I am using an alumin(i)um MacBook (13", late 2008 model with multi-function glass trackpad). In the past couple of weeks, the display has started to behave strangely. The screen seems to freeze (meaning any mouse movements or keystrokes do not display), and then the screen begins to fade to grey. It seems to be resolved by tilting the display until the MacBook "wakes". There has also been some occasional flickering of the display, although far less frequent. Could someone help me with this? Is it something like a loose connection, and, if so, how should I deal with it? (The MacBook is now out of warranty, so my next step would be my local Apple store). Thanks in advance!

Same thing happening to me - began about four weeks ago, two weeks after warranty expired. Has gotten to the point where it's difficult to use the computer - don't get through composing an e-mail before it starts to fade - now know that even though computer display is frozen, the keystrokes are still getting through, so be careful what keys you press trying to get it to pay attention!
I believe it's going to turn out to be a connection problem between the computer and the display in the hinge area. I found out yesterday that as it freezes, and I start to pick it up off my lap and put it aside, if I pick it up with my left hand near the lower left of the keyboard and my right hand behind the display, down low near then hinge, and pulling slightly towards me, this fixes it (for a while), and this is (for me) the most reliable way to wake it back up. I've seen references elsewhere to this being a simple problem where a connection is maintained with a black foam pad to provide pressure to the connection. I think the foam must degrade or lose resiliency (apparently at 12.5 months from purchase!) and there may be a simple solution available. When I figure it out for this particular model, I'll post my conclusions.

  • My Macbook Air behaves strangely with my USB devices.

Hello! My Macbook Air behaves strangely with my USB devices. They appear in the Finder but the icon then quickly disappears, as if the device has never been connected. Sometimes the devices work fine, however. Could you please help me identify the problem?

USB draws power from the MBA, and MBA will shut them down if too much is taken.  Try a self-powered (not USB-powered) hub, to see if the AIr acts better.  Costs about $25 at BestBuy.
May not tbe the final solution, but no a bad idea anyway.

  • Blasted printer problems - HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One

Bought a spanking new HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One and installed the drivers. When running the HP Setup Assistant it had a blank list to select from.
I came across this tip from macosxhints.com
"If your system drive was set up with a case-sensitive HFS file system, HP's All-in-One installer will fail when it gets to the HP Setup Assistant -- it will ask you to "Select Device" and give you an empty list. To get the installer to work, you have to install it on a case-insensitive file system. I've confirmed this with version 7.9.1 of the PhotoSmart C6100 series and version 7.9 of the Officejet 7310 series drivers.
The solution? The only one I've found is to re-format and install on a file system that is not case sensitive. After hearing back from HP's tech support, they confirmed the problem and the solution:
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
The software for the Photosmart C6180 is not supported on a case sensitive partition. You will have to install the drivers on a case-insensitive partition.
I only wish they had mentioned that anywhere in the online troubleshooting section. Sigh." http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070623004646642
Can someone point me in the direction of:
    "Setting up a case-insensitive partition"

  • Problem installing Photosmart C6180 All-In-One software

I've "googled" and found several similar installation issues but none quite match mine.   When I attempt to install the All-In-One software, I receive a dialog box error "The system cannot find the file specified."   The file that it is attempting to find is found in the Dialog window heading:
    c:\users\Myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS52C3\,sourcepath.setup\blocksys...
Using %temp% I am able to verify that the 7zS52C3 folder structure exists.  However the ",sourcepath.setup" folder shown above is incorrect.  it should be just "setup".
I've ran this install several times under  different accounts, including creating a new admin account.
I've cleared all temp files, removed tsr files using msconfig as described and cannot seem to solve this issue.  I even renamed the setup folder to ",sourcepath.setup" to see if this would solve the install but it failed on another file.
I am running Windows Professional x64,  My HP Photosmart c6180 is connected to the network and I am able to print properly to it from my computer.  I need the software primarily for "scanning to computer" functionality.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hello @DirkPittP,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that when installing your HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer on your Windows 7 64 bit computer, you are encountering a 'c:\users\Myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS52C3\,sourcepath.setup\blocksysinstall.exe The system cannot find the file specified' error. I would like to assist you with this issue today.
Now in your original post, I can see that you have already attempted installing the printer on administrator accounts, clearing the temp files, running an msconfig, and renaming the folder to no avail. At this time I would like you run the following steps to see if we can get this working for you.
    Step 1: Uninstall Drivers:
First, I would like you to clean up your system of any software or drivers for your HP Photosmart that may have made their way onto your system during the failed installs. Rather than running the 'normal' uninstall process, I would like you to click here to download the Microsoft Uninstaller Tool.
Once the website opens, please select the Run now button on the right hand side. Please follow through any recommended fix steps provided. When prompted, choose that you need assistance with 'uninstalling'. You will be brought to a list of populated programs from your computer. Scroll through this list until you see your HP Photosmart. Select your HP Photosmart and allow it to uninstall.
This Microsoft Tool will also check your computer for any registry corruptions. Should any system corruptions be found, this Microsoft Tool will fix those corruptions for you.
Once the uninstall has completed, please close the Microsoft Tool and proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Clear the Temp Files:
    Click on your Start menu
In the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter
In the Temp folder select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard to highlight everything
Select the 'delete' button on your keyboard. If you get a pop up to skip an item, just skip it.
Once the Temp folder is emptied, close the window
Right click on your Recycling Bin and select Empty Recycling Bin
    Step 3: Download Drivers:
Please click here to download the latest drivers for your printer.
Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left
    Allow the download to Run
Once the download has completed the installer will automatically extract
After the extraction if you get the error again for 'blocksysuserinstall.exe' take note of the temp folder 7z . . .  number sequence it refers to this time around.
Step 4: Rename Temp 7z Installer package:
    Click on your Start menu
In the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter
In the Temp folder locate the 7z . . . folder that shows in there
Right click on the 7z folder and left click on 'rename'
Rename the folder to the 7z. . . to the name that the 'blocksysuserinstall.exe' points to
NOTE:  Ensure that you are logged into the same User Account that the error points to: "c:\users\Myusername\AppData . . . " when you make the change to the 7z folder. There shouldn't be any  'sourcepath.setup' folders at all.
    Step 5: Install Printer:
Once the 7z folder is renamed to the name the error wants than click on the 7z folder to open it
Scroll down to the bottom of the installer files
Double click on the setup.exe file at the bottom. It may show an HP logo to the left of it
An installer window should pop open
Follow through the with the onscreen instructions to reinstall your printer
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you!
