Photosmart Premium C309 printer using Photo black cartridge when it is not printing pictures

My printer has started using the Photo black cartridge a lot more than it used to.  I think it is using the Photo Black even when there are no images on the document.  I have had the printer for about 4 1/2 years, and it just started doing this in the past six months.  I used to only replace that cartridge about every 6 months.  Now I have to replace it about every 2 months even though I am not printing images.  I replaced the photo cartridge 3 days ago, and it is down about a third, and I have printed no images.  I saw something in one of the responses that talked about changing preferences in the Advanced tab of my printer, but the only option I see there for printing is Automatic.  I would appreciate any help I can get before my printer sucks up my bank account!

Hi @smithloi , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're experiencing cartridge issues.  I would like to help!
I'd recommend removing the cartridges, and performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I'd then suggest running the following updates:
Critical Update
HP Update Software Utility
HP Print Software Patch
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • HP Photosmart 7510 will ONLY use photo black ink

I have a photosmart 7510 printer and I'm printing from microsoft word 2010 on a windows 8 computer. I'm printing a word document with no pictures in it. The printer preferences are set to Plain Paper with Normal quality. I cannot get the printer to use the XL black ink cartridge. It only uses the photo black ink. Is there a setting I can choose to get it to use the regular black ink?
    This question was solved.

    Hi shirsar,
I understand you have a Photosmart 7510 that seems to be using a lot more of the photo black than the regular black ink. I'm sorry to hear this, but believe I can assist you with a solution.
You can set the printer to use black ink only when printing from the PC and that should ensure that it uses that the black ink and not the photo ink. My instructions will be to set it up in the driver so it does it for all programs (if you want it for just the program please let me know and I will advise further). You will want to start with going to your Start screen, and just start typing Devices and Printers and you will want to open that (if that doesn't work type in Control Panel and then proceed to open Devices and Printers). Once Devices and Printers is open, right click on your Photosmart 7510 icon and select Printing Preferences. You will then want to click the Advanced button at the bottom right of the screen. The next page that opens will allow you to set the printer to use Black Ink Only when printing from the PC (please follow the screen shot below for any clarification).
Hope this helps, have a great day!!

  • Printing using the black cartridge only!!

No matter what settings I use, i.e., greyscale/black cartridge only, the printer continues to use ink from the other cartridges.  I want to use only the black ink cartridge except on the rare occasion I print in color.  Any idea?

    tiredofinkscams wrote:
Thanks for the reply.  I have the printer set to "fast draft" on everything, and always use the "greyscale"  and "black cartridge only".  I also never print webpages.  The colored ink cartridges still gradually empty.  Granted the are much slower at emptying than the black, but I want the option of NOT using and having to replace the color cartridges.  I have been tweaking this for some time and I still believe the color cartridges are being used.  Please tell me that that is not intentional on HP's part!
What printer model do you have?  Inkjet printers (from any manufacturer and any model) will use some ink to keep the nozzles unclogged, even if not printing with color for example.  Models with separate ink supplies and printheads will tend to use more ink for servicing than models with the printheads built into the ink supply.  For models with integrated printheads many printers will allow printing with an empty color cartrdige or a color cartrdige that has been removed completely.

  • I use Photo Viewer. Why will it not print in color?

I can not get Windows Photo Viewer to print in color on my Deskjet F335 All in One Printer.  I have changed the print setting for color.  It works fine on my old Epsom CX4800.  I am using Windows 7 Home Edition

That fixed it for me:  Windows 7 - Home Edition x64.
Long story short, it seems that the Windows Photo Viewer does not honor the printer's default preferences!
This was quite aggravating.  I usually have the Printer's defaults set to Black-only in order to save on ink. When something calls for color (school project, photos)  we set that only for the document being printed at the time of printing.  When I ran into a series of grey photos with everything else set to print color, it was a surprise.  Even reinstalling the HP 8600 printer again, using the same installed drivers, it continued to print only grey scale photos.

  • Photo black cartridge problem

Why does my Photosmart 7510 constantly use up the Photo Black cartridge when I'm not printing photos? I have plenty of black ink, but I am constantly going through photo black cartridges. I have "plain paper" set as default.

    AreteOne wrote:
    Thanks, but I don't understand
    1)  how adding yellow to light blue produces black.
    2)  since the printer has a dedicated black photo cartridge, why doesn't it just use that for black?
    3)  since I've pretty much only printed DVDs since installing a new black photo cartridge, and since it's now 1/2 full, wouldn't that suggest that it's being used to print the black titles on the DVDs?
See above, cyan+magenta+yellow mixes to black.
Photo black can be used for the blackest areas.  For shades of gray color ink is used to provide smoother gradations.
I do not know which inks are used to print DVD's.  Whether ink is used or not to print on the printable DVD's, some ink is used for servicing as described here.

  • My Photosmart C309g printer ALWAYS uses the photo black cartridge

I have a photosmart Premium C309g, wireless network connected to an iMac  running OS 10.7.2. I use the printer only occasionally to print photos - I have a smaller HP printer for photos. However the C309g always uses the Photo Black cartridge for print jobs. The printer will not operate without a cartridge fitted. But Photo Black is more expensive! How do I make the printer use the ordinary black cartridge for text jobs?

    Hello,
Thanks for the post, great question.  I've attached a link below that may assist with this, it refers to MAC OS X 10.5/10.6 but the idea remains the same.  Good Luck!

  • Stop it from using photo black ink for black text printing and where has the color ink gone?

My HP Photosmart Prem C310 series all in one is using the Black Photo ink cartridge for text printing instead of the XL Black that I put in it for text printing. How can I get it to use the right cartridge for printing? Also, even though I have NOT printed ANY photo's and very few pages of text the new set of color cartridges I put in it a few months ago are almost empty. Why? How could they be almost empty when I have NOT printed anything in color? This is getting ridiculous replacing ink cartridges every few months WHEN I HAVE NOT BEEN PRINTING ANYTHING!!!
The set of ink cartridges that came with it lasted for several months. Since then I've gone through two sets in less than a year. That's 3 sets of ink cartridges when I have only printed 3 photo's when I first set it up. And have only used les than a 1/4 of one package of printing paper. I've only put paper in it twice. Each time it was about a 1/4 inch or 3/8 of an inch thick stack of paper in the tray. I've even tried shutting the printer down when its not being used for a long period of time but the ink is still disapearing. Where is it going? Why is it going there? How do I stop it? This is rediculous. I may as well junk the thing even though it still works because I cant aford to keep feeding it ink when its just sitting there doing nothing most of the time.
    Thank you

I just got another email from HP about this problem wanting to know what I found for a solution to this problem. From all of the suggestions from the HP tec support all of them pretty much kept saying the same thing. That it is my fault that it's using so much ink because I have it on the wrong settings. One tec did slip and say that it doesn't matter what settings you have it on it will always use the Photo Black cartridge for printing plain black text and it doesn't matter if you have a X-Large Black cartridge in it for text printing because it was made to always use the Photo Black for text and even use some of the colors to blend with the black to make it stand out. Why anybody would need this when just printing shipping labels and things like that I don't know.
Any who, The only solution for this problem is,,,, junk the printer and get a different brand & model of printer. Research it before buying to find out how much ink it wants to waste and if it will still print black text if it only has a black cartridge in it. I was going to get rid of mine by giving it to a friend since they don't have a printer. But since I want to keep him as a friend I decided not to give it to him. Since it cant be traded in for a different one even though it still works, Its going to the target shooting range the next time I go out shooting. Maybe I'll take a few video's clips of it getting blasted to pieces with a Ruger 10-22 .22 cal. rifle with 25 shot clips, a Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle shooting .223 cal with a 30 shot clip, a Chinese SKS 7.62 with a 30 shot clip. And maybe use my Ruger P89 9mm pistol and put a couple 15 round clips of 9mm in it. If there's anything left I'll finish it off with a few 3" magnum loads of #2 steel shot with my 20 gauge shotgun.  Then I think I'll do the same thing to my Westinghouse 46" flat screen HDTV that just died.
Then maybe I'll come back and post the video's of my "solution to this printers problem". It may not fix the problem, but it will be an entertaining way of getting rid of the problem.

  • 564 black ink - printer using photo ink for general printing!

I ran out of regular black ink for my Photosmart C6380 a couple of weeks ago.  Had a full cartridge of photo black, but none was used - pages were very faint gray.  After replacing the empty cartridge with a 564XL, I see that my photo black is now half empty while the regular black ink is full and has not been touched at all!!  Where's the confusion?  How do I make the printer draw from the standard ink cartridge instead of the photo?  It won't work without every cartridge in place.

    Hi Selig,
Thanks for posting you issue on forum,
From what i understand you would like to Print use black ink only instead of photo black.
You have an option under the printer driver which says Black ink only, by selecting that you will not be able to print color. On most cases this should help you use the black cartridge over the photo black.
If you have to print color you might need to change this option,
I dont have the printer over here but the steps are from best of my knowledge.
Go to Control Panel>> Devices and Printers>> Highlight Printer>>Right click on Printer and click Printing Preferences.
Click on Advance>>click on the drop down for Print in Greyscale and select Black Ink only
with newer driver we have this option under Printing Preferences>>Paper/Quality tab and under Quality settings.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Photosmart 3210 not printing with full black cartridge.

My photosmart 3210 has had 2 new black cartridges installed and the display acknowledges they are full. However, it refuses to print in black. I have cleaned the heads, successfully aligned the printer but black is still missing from anything I print including test pages. All the printer does is print the black bits using a combination of other inks, which usually results in a in a wine colour. Please could somebody help me.

JenBrock...did you ever get a solution?  I am having the same problem and have tried all the same troubleshooting options with no sucess.  I also tried to calibrate the color and the background color on the grey squares did not print nor did the black numbers that corrispond to each square print.  Help please...Anyone?!!!

  • HP 7520 -- how to print using large black ink cartridge?

Hi, I've got the HP 7520 with the two black ink cartridges, one small and one large. However, as best I can tell, it's only using the black ink from the small cartridge, even when I print only in black and white (or "high quality grayscale"). Since 95% of the printing I need to do is just black and white (text, mostly) this is kindof annoying -- is there a way to force/encourage it to use the black in the bigger cartridge.
The reasons I believe it's not using the big ink cartridge is
    1) I've had to replace the small one half a dozen times in a pretty short time; the big one I haven't not at all, and it still shows up as full when I check ink levels2) when printing in B/W starts to get streaky, I run the "Print qualty diagnostic" page, and the "Black" section shows up as streaky but the "Photo" section (which appears to correspond to the larger blank ink cartridge) looks fine.
Also, when I photocopy in B/W it appears to work fine even when printing in B/W is not, so presumbly that's because it's using the big ink cartridge then.
Thanks in advance for the help/advice.
    -Mike

The large cartridge is black, the smaller cartridge is the photo cartridge.  There are a few things to check:
Make sure the proper media type is selected in the driver.  If you are mostly printing on plain paper make sure to select Plain Paper in the driver rather than Automatic.  It is possible for Automatic to misidentify the paper and think it is using photo paper.  When printing to photo paper the black cartrdige will not be used, only the photo and color cartridges.
In the driver settings for "Print in grayscale" select "Black ink only".

  • C5380 - I want to print using ONLY black ink cartridge. Is this possible?

    Hi Folks,
I now understand that this model, HP C5380 and I'm guessing many others too, are programed to use an amount of colour ink even when selected to print in Black.
My question is:  Can I somehow program the printer to 'only print using the black ink cartridge' and not use the colour cartridges at all?
I have heard that this is possible with some models but need the specifics.
I am even willing to permanently disable the colour function if needed. The replacement ink catridges are so very expensive, if I'm unable to do this then I'll be looking for another printer and it won't be HP.  Thi is unfortunate because I think they make a good quality product - however they need to be on notice that their customers 'good will' and return business will not be forthcoming when they (and other compaines) continue to use money making strategies like this.
Many Thanks in advance for your time, B

OK, the printer is attached to your router just fine, so the problem is likely in your PC.
I'd recommend you uninstall the HP software (with the HP uninstaller), reboot, then get the latest software for your printer from the "Support & Drivers" link at the top of this page.

  • Print with only black cartridge HP OfficeJet 6700 Premium

    Britt4:
I print 95% or more black-and-white pages.  Maybe 5% of the time I am interested in color output.  Same usage pattern for copying features.
HP seems to promote the fact that with individual color cartridges I "only have to replace the color cartridges that actually get used up".
"Perfect" ... I thought.  An all-in-one can sit in a small office and be used mostly for B&W, and every once in a while the color cartridges will be used (they'll last quite a long time that way, so I thought) and the copying needs etc. will also all be covered.
NOW after some time I'm starting to discover that these all-in-one devices evidently consume the HP color ink that I would buy while they are printing black-only output.  If I do a bunch of low-cost (so I thought) black output my color inks are evidently disappearing!   I thought maybe this is tiny and insignificant but I've found it more expensive.
I am interested in a solution so I can use only black-ink for black output (including business-quality black output) and when needed, a separate option to print in the color ink supply only when I want to print in color.
I DO NOT want to consume color ink to print black only-pages, which are much-more-frequent usage.
**** I need a workaround option to print with empty color cartridges when I am printing black output (thus use / install the color ink only for the periods that I want actual color output)?
Can you PLEASE help! ! !
    Thanks!!!

I'm in the same boat with my 6700 that I purchased recently (Dec 2013?). I've been using the setup cartridges for the few, mostly balck and white, pages that I have needed to print. I was printing a couple of tax forms and on the second one it refused to print, saying the cartridge was depleted. Fair enough, but it was rather inconvenient. I purchased a genuine HP black ink cartridge (832) for about $20 and installed it, but now it's reporting that all three color cartridges are depleted and need replacing. I tried removing and replacing them to no avail.
I have ordered a set of remanufactured cartridges from Printronix for about $12 and I hope they work. Otherwise I think I'm just going to sell this POS and get a cheap laser printer or ink jet from any manufacturer OTHER THAN HP. I understand the logic behind using some color ink with the black to keep the head clear and lubricated, but I don't want to spend like $50 for a complete set of cartridges and need to replace them again in six months of minimal usage.
Hewlett-Packard was once the premier line of electronic test equipment and I still have several that were made before the Agilent name change. And I've had several HP computers and have had some problems with them. But now I've become quite annoyed with the (lack of) performance from this HP printer and it looks like I'll be looking elsewhere for my next one(s).

  • Photo black cartridge life too short

The photo black cartridge in the Photosmart 7525 has a very short lifespan compared to the other cartridges.  I rarely print photos.  Can this cartridge be bypassed to save on ink?

    Hello @MinPville,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you would like to bypass the photo black cartridge on your HP Photosmart 7525 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you with this today.
This printer is meant for printing photos with high quality, therefore there is no way to 100% avoid using the photo black cartridge. When you go to print from your computer, ensure that the paper type is set to 'plain' paper. Also, set the quality to 'draft' or 'normal' rather than 'best' and the printer shouldn't use very much if any photo black.
In this model of printer the HP 564 Photo Cartridge will give you a page yield of about 130 4 x 6in pages. This is based off of a 5% page coverage. The 5% page coverage works out to be about 2 paragraphs double-spaced on your page. Also, the photo black, just like the other colour cartridges, are also used for printer maintenance to keep your printhead healthy. Therefore, a small amount of ink will be used during the printhead cleaning process or printer maintenance that will occasionally run.
When printing photos from your computer and certain documents (PDF or Internet Files) your printer generally uses a bit of colour and photo black to enrich those print jobs as they are sent from your computer to the printer as image files. Should you rarely print in colour I would suggest setting your printer to 'black ink only' which would only utilize your regular black cartridge rather than your photo black.
How to set Black Ink Only:
    Click on your Start menu
    Select Devices and Printers
Right click on your HP Photosmart
    Left click on Printing Preferences
Select the Advanced tab and set the printer to 'black ink only'
Hit Apply and OK to save the changes
Should you ever want to print in colour, then open up the colour document you wish to print and go to 'file' and 'print'. Once the Print dialogue window opens, click 'properties' and set the printer back to 'colour' rather than 'black ink only'. This setting will only be changed for this one job and will revert back to black ink only for any new jobs.
Going forward, should you mainly print text documents and rarely print photos I suggest avoiding Photosmart printers in the future. Rather, Officejet printers would suite your needs and ink usage more efficiently and you can still print photos with great quality.
Please let me know if the information I've provided resolves your photo black ink issues. Best of luck!
