Photostream: photos double on iOS devices, why?

Hi,
with photostream activated and "last 12 months" avtivated in iTunes, I have all pics twice on my iOS devices. Don't they recognize that a photo is already there?

Turning on my photo stream in Settings>iCloud>Photos will cause new photos added to your camera roll (such as photos you take on your iOS devices) to be added to your photo stream when they are connected to wifi (with the camera app closed and at least 20% battery life remaining).  Once in photo stream, they will automatically stream to your other iOS devices and computers that are signed into the same iCloud account with my photo stream enabled.  For example, iPhoto on your Mac will automatically download these photos when opened and your Mac is connected to the internet.  It sounds like you have Automatic Import checked in iPhoto>Preferences>iCloud, which causes these photo stream photos to be added to your events.  Once they are in your events, they will appear as options to select in iTunes on the Photos tab when you choose to sync iPhoto photos to your devices.
What happened in your case is that you had the iPhoto event(s) selected in iTunes to sync to your iOS devices, which in turned transferred a duplicate of the photo stream photos to your devices when you synced them with iTunes.  Unchecking these events in iTunes removes these duplicates from your devices and prevents this from happening again in the future.  If you select any other folder in iTunes on your computer, it will sync a copy of the photos contained in the folder to your devices.  (Unchecking any folder and syncing again will remove them from your devices.)

  • Does photo stream distribute also photos saved on iOS device?

I have several photos taken by another iPhone and sent to my iPhone via email or whatsapp. I see them on my iPhone but not on my iPAD.

That is because saved photos go to the Camera Roll, not to PhotoStream. Only photos taken with your device go to PhotoStream.
You can create a Shared PhotoStream album if you want to share photos not taken with the device:
To create a Shared Photo Stream, launch the Photos app on your iOS device, and select the Photo Stream option at the bottom of the screen. In the upper-left corner is a + sign; tap on it. Enter the iCloud e-mail address of the person (or people) you'd like to share your album with. Enter a name for the album.
    Cheers,

  • Getting photos onto my iOS devices from my Mac mini with beta library turned on.

I am using iOS 8.1.3 and have turned on Beta Library. I find that I can no longer get photos from my Mac onto my iPhone and iPad mini. In iPhoto, I've dragged them into Photostream on the Mac and they appear in Photostream there but not on my iOS devices. How can I get selected photos from iPhoto on the Mac to appear in Photos album on my iPhone and iPad mini?

The iOS OS doesn't give you direct access to the file system on the device, so will thwart your ability to upload files from your device. You can't interact with those files directly.
Perhaps there is an FTP app for iOS that would let you do this, but it might not meet apples terms of service for the App Store so would probably require a jail broken phone.
Even though limited by these restrictions, VPN is still helpful for other things. You can access a mail server or private website that's behind a VPN firewall. You can control airport base stations behind a firewall.  VPN can also make 3rd party apps more useful in other ways too. For instance I can remotely control a retrospect backup server using their iOS app with VPN to punch thru the firewall.

  • Photos taken from iOS device not showing up on Macbook??????

I have photo streaming turned "ON" on my iPhone 5, iPad Air and Macbook Pro. For some reason or another I have been having problems getting the pictures to show up on my Mac. The only time I need for this to happen automatically is when I am listing on eBay. For example I took a picture of the item that I want to list from my iPhone 5. Within a few minutes the picture shows up my iPad Air. I am using my Macbook Pro to list the items. It took over an hour for one picture to come over. I called Apple and without having a device that is under the 1 year contract or Applecare they push this support forum on you or pay $19.95 for them to walk you through it.
Before anyone replies, I have made sure that I am signed in under my apple ID on all three devices and have photo stream selected as well. All of my devices are updated to the latest software. Being that I am having problems with my Mac it is version 10.9.4 running Mavericks. If anyone has any definite answers to this problem I am having I would appreciate all the advice I can get.

No offense, but there are not definitive answers when it comes to iCloud.
    Reset iCloud.
On your iOS devices, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos then switch Photo Stream off then back on.
On your Mac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Photos then reselect it.
Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync the data.

  • I am trying to transfer photos from a portable device, why don't they go to I photo?

I want to transfer photos from a portable device to my iMac. They don't seem to go to iPhoto, but as another file..I then cannot move them to iPhoto, and am struggling to then upload to my iPad! Any advise?

It's possible the default upload location got changed from your device. Connect the device (flash drive, camera, phone or whatever you're using) then launch Image Capture (look in your Applications folder) then in the lower left you will see a small down arrow, click it then locate iPhoto in the box and you should be set.

  • TS3989 Photostream on a new iOs device

I just bought a new iPad to replace one that was lost. I had uploaded a whole lot of pictures to photo stream. They aren't accessible. How do I get them back?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Photostream in the cloud only keeps photos from the last 30 days (subject to a 1,000 photo limit). When photostream syncs the photos to your device they will stay there until deleted, which means you may well have more photos in your photostream album on your device than there are in photostream in the cloud.
The consequence of this is that if you turn photostream off and on again on your device (or enable it for the first time), it will only be populated with photos from the last 30 days, which may not be all the photos that were previously in the photostream album on that device.

  • How do I sync all photos from different iOS devices in Match?

How do you sync photos  in al devices using Match?

iTunes Match is for music only (and music videos purchased from the iTunes Store).

  • Forcing an updated version of edited photos to another iOS device

I took some photos with my iPhone, they transferred to the iPad, and then I edited them (removed a filter). The updated versions have not transferred to the ipad. How do I force this to happen?

You would have to ask the maker of the apps.  They are the ones who choose what versions to release and make available.

  • Photo order within Events broken on iOS devices synchronized with iPhoto

I have a Mac running OS X 10.8.2 with iPhoto 9.4.2 (710.42) and an iPhone and an iPad, both running iOS 6.0.1.
In iPhoto, I import photos from a memory card that I use in various digital cameras and organize them by events. I view photos inside events ordered by date in ascending order. This is also the order that I want to see my synchronized photos on my iOS devices (and which I did see in the past). I sync my photos from iPhoto via iTunes by the option "Select albums, Events and Faces automatically".
My most recently imported events cause some problems on my synchronized iOS devices. Now the photo order in the iOS "Photos" app is broken in the Events view. All photos that are taken in upright format appear BEHIND all photos taken in landscape format within an event. However, I want them to be sorted by date irrespective of the picture rotation, just as I see them in iPhoto on my Mac.
Events that I had imported earlier (before ~ mid October) are still ordered as expected, just as I see them in iPhoto.
According to this, the sorting of iPhoto should be preserved: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4221
I assume that photos of newly imported events are displayed on iOS devices in the order of modification date instead of creation date (EXIF) since iPhoto automatically rotates pictures that are taken in upright format by 90° and saves them as 'modified' files besides the 'original' files. I also assume that photos of my older events are displayed in correct order on my iPad since they had already been synchronized at a time when everything worked as expected. I also tried to re-synchronized these older events on my iPhone (to see what happens) by unchecking "Synchronize Photos" -> Apply -> checking "Synchronize Photos" -> Apply and on my iPhone, those older photos are also out of order now.
Also note that my photos are ordered correctly in the "Albums -> Photo Library" view on iPhone and on the "Photos" tab on iPad. These are the same pictures as under Events. So the sorting is wrong in the Events view of newly imported events only.
I know that there are some other discussions about the order of photos on iOS devices. I want this one to be specifically about problems with a synchronized iPhoto library. Anybody else experiencing this issue?

Same issue. Ever since upgrading to iPhoto on my retina MBP to 9.4.2. Problem seen with BOTH my iPhone 5 on iOS 6.0.1 AND iPhone 4S on 5.1.1, so not an iOS issue. For me, it impacts both albums and events. In fact, sometimes you can't even see the event under iTunes->device->photo tab, until you exit iPhoto & iTunes and restart both with phone plugged in. There is a workaround for the album's mis-order: by manually sorting photos through dragging a photo to a new location within the album and then placing it back. However, this doesn't work for mis-ordered photos under events.  Right now, I just have to live with it....  I have even tried removing all photos, deleting iPod photo cache, and starting anew. Even 1 event with 30 photos have the same problem.....
Really annoying as I like to see my event photos sorted by date.
Somehow, such syncing problems always seem to occur EVERYTIME there's an iPhoto upgrade. Are apple's departments so siloed? Do they not work with one another to test a software before releasing it?
Apple, please investigate and fix the issue ASAP!

  • How can I see or transfer my old photos from my iOS 6 iPod Touch to the 'Years, Collections, Moments' in my iOS 8 iPhone 5S?

How can I see or transfer my old photos from my iOS 6 iPod Touch to the 'Years, Collections, Moments' in my iOS 8 iPhone 5S?
For example, my mom's 'Years, Collections, Moments' in her iPhone 6 has pictures from her old iPhones, even her 3GS

    Greetings Yushk,
It seems you would like to transfer photos from your previous device to your iPhone 5S. I have linked to an article which may help you. You can transfer those photos to a Mac or PC, then sync them to your new device:
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
After you import your photos from your iOS device or Saved Photos, you can use iTunes to sync them back to your device.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • Is wifi syncing with iOS devices encrypted?

Anyone know whether the connection between your iOS device and iTunes is encrypted when you sync over Wifi?
It's fine if it's not at home, but needless to say I can't sync anywhere else if that's not encrypted.

In the iPhone and iPad the image quality of the transferred photos is blurred and I am looking for an easy and quick method to use.
How are you syncing? Are you using Photo stream (iPhoto and Aperture: Using Photo Stream) or iTunes Photo Sync ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US )?
Both methods should give you good quality photos on your IOS devices - indeed I am seeing very good quality pictures in my Photo Stream and in the albums synced from iTunes.
If I am looking in my iPod photo cache, I see that all images synced to the IOS devices are at least 2MB in size.
The current setting for the Preview quality is global. You cannot set the Preview quality differently for different projects or libraries. What you could do however, would be to change the setting, recreate previews with different settings for selected images, then change the preview quality back.
And you can prevent selected projects from generating previews alltogether: Use the menu below the cogwheel in the Library Inspector to disable previews for selected projects:

  • IOS devices don't put shared photos from Camera Roll onto My Photostream

I have photostream setup and working pretty well. I have 2 iPhones and 2 iPads syching all their photos between them and sharing with others. My phortos are also being automatically saved on my mac mini using My Photostream.
The problem is when I want to add photos someone esle has shared on a photo stream into My Photostream. I save the photo I want into the Camera Roll of the device. This bit works fine but for somereason the photo isn't then put into My Photostream. It's very strange because if I put images into my Camera Roll through other methods (such as from an email or a screen capture and of course by taking a photo) the image gets into My Photostream. It's just images I imput from shared photostream that don't.
This is really frustrating because I want to easily have other people's photos that I want in my personal colleciton included in the backup on the mac mini. It's particularly nice how all my photos appear grouped by month in Events in iPhoto.
Is anyone else having this problem? Any advice on how to fix it? It's occuring with all my iOS devices so it looks like it might be a bug.

I'd rather not. Besides the hassle of the extra synch process, they'll come in as separate import events mixed in wih all my other photos and not be in the month by month photostream archive I mentioned.

  • How can one sync a) Albums to all my iOS devices and b) Photos

    1/It is evident to me that only My Photostream is automatically uploading/ syncing ( within the number of 1000) pics;
but Each iOs- device may have a different Photostream ( eg: if activated at different times, previously)
2/ since Photostream will then delete ( algorithms unknown) an unknown number of photos, to stay<1000,
    saving is necessary:
one would either save them in Photos/ . (?)
Someone here has suggested to take the content of Photostream and create a new Album ( eg: "From Photostream_ Date"),
and transfer ALL images thereto, from time to time (?)
    - it would be helpful if syncing is also  possible on the Album level ( via iTunes ??)
    - OR: are the Albums strictly collections on the respective iOs - device, (and the Mac ?), eventually
containing different Photos (!), ie : Albums are on the device - level (?)
->> Having said so, Can one sync on the Album level ?
    - OR somehow also on the Photo- level ?
3/ when is the best time, to save the My Photostream
Sorry , if too many Q's

    My Qs were more specific
It is easier to answer specific question, when I know whch options you are having on your computers. I.e. I wondered if you would be able to use Shared PhotoStreams  instead of My Photo Stream, but that would require MacOS X 10.9. at least, see: iCloud: Using and troubleshooting Shared Photo Streams
    ( pls see above): 1/ I was assuming that via iCloud only " my Photostream" is distributed onto all aktivated iOs- devices;
The Photostream "My Photo Stream" uses a buffer in iCloud: Each device will upload the most recent (last month)  photos saved to the Camera Roll, if Photo Stream is enabled and any photo you share to the stream. The buffer in iCloud will only keep the photos for a month - it is meant as a streaming buffer and not as a storage. And the stream you are seeing on your devices is fed from this buffer. Depending on when you activate Photo Stream on the devices they will show different selections of photos - it depends on what is currently in iCloud. With IOS 7.0.4 you could also stream to Shared Streams, and they will keep all photos in iCloud, only you would need to upgrade.
    - having said so: does iCloud then back up my Camera Roll ( Photos)  in toto ?
Your Photostream is generated automatically from all photos saved to your camera roll, so if you keep all photos in your camera roll and save any new photos from the Photo Stream to your camera roll, they will all be backed up, inclding any videos in your camera roll. This list describes in detail, what automatically will be backed up in iCloud over Wi-Fi:
See: iCloud: Backup and restore overview
2/ the 2nd Q posed was: Is there a mechanism to save/ backup on the Album level ( I guessed it can be done via iTunes), but also through iCloud (??)
That is exactly, why I asked for your system versions: if you could create Shared Streams, you could use 100 separate streams just like albums, and all would be stored in iCloud.
But there is no way to structure "My Photo Stream".
But the iCloud backup of your devices will include all application data, so albums you define in the Photos app will also be included, only not the photos synced to your device using iTunes, unless you save them to the camera roll.
    - Does one then HAVE TO make b/u via iTunes for EACH iOs device ( and of course the whole Library file
You can make your iCloud backup using Wi-Fi ( iCloud: Backup and restore overview), but you will have more control over it, when you create the backup using iTunes. And syncing using USB is faster than Wi-Fi.
4/ Does one have to save (B/U) as well via iTunes into the iPhoto library,
    as also via iCloud (?)
It is recommended: the iCloud backup of your IOS devices will enable you to restore your devices directly from iCloud, but a separate backup in iTunes will make it possible to restore a new replacement device from the backup, if your iPad, iPhone will be stolen, lost, or defective. And you can access the iTunes backup even when the network is down, or there is a problem with your iCloud account.
iPhoto library: When you automatically import the photoStream into your iPhoto library on your Mac, any backup of your iPhoto library will be a backup of your Photo Stream photos as well. I'd create the albums in iPhoto on your Mac.

A remark about Photostream : its deletion logic for pics, once 1000 is reached is intransparent
This is explaine d by the fact that "my Photo Stream" is not meant to be a storage, just a transient buffer. You have one month time to grab your photos from the stream, and then they will be removed, consider it to be a stream of photos that you are viewing from a narrow window. You are supposed to download the photos to your camera roll or to an event on your mac, as soon as you are seein it in the stream. After a month it will be gone.
