Photshop CS6 image resizing tool.

Five time I have entered a support question but it does not seem to appear in the lists nor have I had a response, am I entering my request incorrectly?
My request is:
I have a PC using Windows 7. I have Photoshop CS6 which I have been using for some time. Very recently the image, image size tool has stopped working. I open the drop down window and the current size of my image is displayed. I then try and type the required changed size in the box but the box does not accept it. The size remains the same. I have un-installed and re-installed CS6 and put in all the latest updates. The first image I tried, it allowed me to change the size. The second image the resize tool would not allow any changes. We were back to where we started. Elsewhere on the support FAQs it was suggested such problems might be cured by deleting \adobe photo cs6 prefs.psp file. This I have done but still I cannot resize my images.
Please can someone help me??

If Photoshop has been working well for you then start acting strange the first thing that should come to you  mind is your Photoshop preferences.  Your Photoshop preferences are Photoshop setting made for your user ID for how you want Photoshop to behave.  Each user ID has there own set of Preference files. These are not installed or removed when you Install or uninstall Photoshop.   So if you un-install and re-install Photoshop your Photoshop preferences remain intact.  If the Problem you are having is caused by a corrupt Photoshop preference file.  You will still have that same problem. Did you try resetting your Photoshop preferences?
Though the Image size dialog is simple many users do not really understand everything about image resizing.  Using a quick look at the image we see three section Top, Middle and bottom..
Top section is basicly image file size how many pixels are there in the image.
Middle Image Print Size.
Bottom Image Resize Image Controls.
To understand Image Resize you must start from the bottom.  In the bottom control section  Resample Image is the single control that governs  the whole resizing process.   When "Resample Image"  is NOT checked all other controls have no roll in the resize process they are grayed out as is the top file size section.  The file size will not change the pixel will not change. Note all that is grayed out in the above image.  All that can be change is the print size.  The middle section and all three sizes there are tied together as shown by the lines and link icon.  Change one size there and Photoshop will calculate the other two and display the proper values. All  thee setting in the center are sizes associated with length.  Width number uints, Height number uints. and Resolution number Pixel/unit. Resolution therefore is pixels size and pixels have an aspect ratio. Most image pixel these days are square 1:1 aspect ratio.  Photoshop support non square pixels but can only display image using square pixels display have.
So when Resample is not checked. The image has a  Width with a fixed number Pixel, a Height with a fixed number Pixels and Pixel aspect ratio. Setting any one print dimension will also set the other two dimensions.
When resample is check the other controls in the bottom section become useable and so does the top file section.  Normally you should check Constraint Proportions link Width and Height so your image will not distort during the resize. When you resample an image you wind up with an entirely new image with a different number of pixels. Some image quality has been lost for you either through way some details you had or created some details you did not have.  The image quality will depend on the quality of the pixels you had and how well the interpolation method used worker with those pixels. IMO Adobe Bicubic Automatic is not a good general purpose method to it tend to add many artifacts to image that have been sharpened.
In newer version of Photoshop CC and CC 2014 Adobe has redesigned the Image Size dialog adding a preview  image display. Made the dimension link icon the constrain proportion control when resample is checked. Also hid the scale style option under a gear icon in the upper right corner.

  • PSE-6.....Image Resizing vs. Cropping

I'm confused as to whether I should use the image resizing tool or the cropping tool. (my situation explained below)  Can someone explain the difference and what I should do?  But please note that I am TOTALLY new to photography and photoshop, and so I really need someone to explain it to me keeping in mind that I'm photography ignorant/illiterate.
SITUATION:  I'm taking pictures of my handmade jewelry. I plan on doing several different things with the photos--printing, posting online, and emailing.
From what I've read, these 3 actions require different sizes and resolutions (?).....But I've been told that printing requires 600 dpi (or ppi, right?)...........that posting online requires 72 ppi......that with emailing photo dimensions will be specified by the email recipient.      Upon uploading my pics began at 180 ppi and the actual size on the computer screen is GIGANTIC  (I assigned my camera the max 12 megapixels / 4000x3000-whatever that means).   So starting at 180 ppi how can I increase/decrease the ppi and which do I use (image resizing or cropping) for printing, posting online and emailing?
Also, does changing the ppi (or dpi, right?) affect the size of the pic?  In other words, just how much related is ppi and size? example---can I have one picture that's 5x7 and another pictures that 8x10 but they have the same ppi?  And vice-verse?  As you can see I'm totally confused on this subject.
Thank you to whomever responds.......I REALLY appreciate it.....

Thanks Joe.  You are so helpful.  This stuff can be confusing to learn.  For example - below is a chart from an article I read about jewelry photography.  Notice next to "Resolution" the folders are referred to in "DPI"?  Did the author mean to say ppi?.....because my PSE-6 does not have any functions that allow DPI changes.....just ppi.....

  • Photshop CS6 not showing as `open-with` for desktop/external hard.drive images

Hi, I have CS6 and am using Photoshop, but when I try to open any image on my desktop  the `open with` option dosent include Photoshop CS6, only other Adobe applications; even when I browse I can only find the Adobe systems file, with the .exe doc; I have a lot of images to edit, preferably without having to open Photoshop and individually open them from their folders; any advice on how to make Photshop CS6  `open-with`-able for any desktop/external hard drive images?

Thanks for raising this issue. I found the answer at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/photoshopsupport/discuss/72157630067784368/. Hope it works. I have done it but I believe I must now reboot before trying it.

  • The resize tool just don't appear in my ai CS6

The resize tool just don't appear. When I try to resize, it only turn out that I only move my text box. Is there something wrong with my software?

Sorry, think I need I didn't make myself clear. It's the textbox that I am having problem.
The resize tool just didn't appear when I place the cursor over the edge of the textbox.
It end up only moving the whole textbox.
Is there a bug with my software?

  • Ways to implement image resizing using plug-ins?

    Hi Photoshop developers,
I'm a developer with a few Photoshop filter and selection plug-ins under my belt, and I have a good understanding of the SDK and tools and suites it provides. My next project is an algorithm for enlarging/resampling images to different pixel dimensions. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for or experience with the best combination of plug-in types to implement this.
Clearly, I can't just write it as a filter plug-in, since there is no way to change the image dimensions from within a filter.
I'd like the resized image to remain within Photoshop (as a new window or in the original one), so an export plug-in on its own is not sufficient.
Import plug-ins seem promising, since they allow the creation of a new document of the required size. However, as best I can tell from the Photoshop 6.0 SDK documentation, import plug-ins cannot access the image data from other open documents (or even the clipboard), nor do they provide any support for channel ports and the Channel Port suite.
My best idea at this stage is to create an export plug-in to provide the user interface and calculate the resized image, and then an import plug-in to import the resized image back into a new window. (I'm supposing a further automation plug-in would then be written to perform this export/import sequence.) The difficulty I see with this approach is how to communicate the resized image data between the two plug-ins. Since the resized image will potentially be very large, the ideal solution would be to store it in channels managed by the Channel Ports suite. However, I cannot see how the channel ports created in the export plug-in could be communicated to and used by an import plug-in. The alternative would be for the export plug-in to save the resized image to a temporary file on disk, however this seems unnecessary.
    So, my questions, specifically, are:
    a) Is it possible to create new channels using the Channel Ports suite (sPSChannelPorts->New()) in one plug-in, and have those channels persist to be used in another plug-in?
    b) If so, how would the channel ports be communicated between the plug-ins?
    c) Alternately, are there any alternative architectures available for implementing an image-resizing algorithm using the plug-in types that are available for Photoshop developers.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated; I know this is a low-traffic forum...
    Thanks,
    Matthew.

  • PSE newbie frustrated, please help with image resizing

    Hi!
Tutorials aren't helping me, nor is trial and error. I just want to resize some photos I downloaded to my computer, then upload them to a website to use as my avatar or signature. There are specific pixel dimensions I must adhere to. I want to keep the photo in it's entirety, but when I resize it, it distorts a bit, looks fuzzy...
I can't figure out what the heck I am doing wrong. Some pictures turn out just fine and others look really bad. I know it can be done because I've seen the same pictures I'm trying to size, being used for the same thing I want to use them for, but theirs are clear, absolutely no distortion whatsoever. The pixel dimensions I have to work with are either 100x100, or 450 pixels wide by 90 pixels high.
I hope this made sense, I'm not sure how else to word it. Please forgive my ignorance, I've really been trying.
    Thank-you
    B

For an avatar it’s possibly best to crop to begin with so you get a true square.
Open the image and select the crop tool and change the aspect ratio to 1 x 1 or 5 x 5 then drag out a square and move the image around inside it or drag the bounding box borders until you have it looking as you want. Then click the green check mark.
On the top menu click Image > Resize > Image Size and in either the height or width box type 100 px (you only need to type the dimension once the other box will change to 100 automatically. Make sure you have the bottom three boxes checked:
    Scale Styles
    Constrain Proportions
    Resample Image
With all three checked set the bottom dropdown to Bicubic and then hit OK.
If you want to apply some sharpening select Enhance on the top menu and choose Unsharp Mask.
Make sure the Radius is no more than 1.5 and use the amount slider to get the image looking as you want it then save.

  • How to make image resizable using mouse ?

    Hi,
I want to know about that how to resize image by using mouse in Java Canvas. I created some tools like line, free hand, eraser. And want to know how to make an image resizable in canvas by using mouse. An image is jpeg, png, or gif format. I want to make image stretch and shrink by using mouse.
    Please help me..
    Thnax in advance.

You make a listener to handle the mouse event that you want to capture, then program the affect you want using the event as the trigger.

  • Working with images – Resizing, Add arrow & text boxes etc

I am using RH HTML for updating our Web application Help from
RoboHelp V3 to V6. It involves lot of images. I found the picture
quality good only using Word in the combination of
    RoboScreenCapture.
I need to confirm that the method and steps for capturing
images using Word & RoboScreenCapture will work reliably for
both WebHelp and Printable output in Word. Please review my
detailed steps as listed below and give me your suggestions.
Here are the detailed steps I took for each method:
    Starting with Resize & RoboScreenCapture:
    1. From our Web application I took the screenshot.
    2. I pasted the screenshot in Resize tool and resized it.
    3. Opened the RoboScreenCapture, went back to the Resize tool
and by using the Screen Capture Hot key - Cntrl+Shift+R, I captured
the region. The captured screen popped up in the RoboScreenCapture
    tool.
    4. I drew an arrow on the image and the text box and also
entered the text in the text box. Then I saved the image in the
    RoboScreenCapture.
    5. Opened up the RH Html. Opened up the Web Help project file
which I am updating and pasted an image in wysiwyg.
    Result
The image was not very clear looking in wysiwyg.
    In Paint:
    1. From our Web application I took the screenshot.
    2. I pasted the screenshot in Paint, stretch the image form
100% to 80%. The quality of the image reduced dramatically.
    3. Opened the RoboScreenCapture, went back to the Paint and
by using the Screen Capture Hot key - Cntrl+Shift+R, I captured the
region. The captured screen popped up in the RoboScreenCapture
    tool.
    4. I drew an arrow on the image and the text box and entered
the text in the text box. Then I saved the image in
    RoboScreenCapture.
    5. Opened up RH Html. Opened up the Web Help project file
which I am updating and pasted an image in wysiwyg.
    Result
The image was not very clear looking in wysiwyg.
    Finally, with Word:
    1. From our Web application I took the screenshot.
    2. I pasted the screenshot in Word, resized it. While in Word
I can draw an arrow on the image and the text box and entered the
    text in the text box.
    3. Opened the RoboScreenCapture, went back to the Word and by
using the Screen Capture Hot key - Cntrl+Shift+R, I captured the
region. The captured image popped up in the RoboScreenCapture tool.
Then I saved the image in RoboScreenCapture.
    4. Opened up RH Html. Opened up the Web Help project file
which I am updating and pasted an image in wysiwyg.
    Result
    Nice & Clear

There's a topic about this on my site that might interest
    you.
I recently tried the Microsoft Fax and Image viewer (the
freebie with XP) and reduced the window size dramatically. With a
photographic image it was very good. A quick test suggests it might
be good with text as well.

  • Batch image resizing

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the limits on the image resizing in Photoshop is. I need to run a regular batch of image resizing on about 38,000+ images (quiet a lot). I've also been looking around for a tool that can handle this number of images to resize, does anyone know if Adobe has such a tool?
    Thanks
    Stephen

I don't think there is an easy answer for you, if the files are on a server then there could be horrendous problems. You might need a custom script that breaks the batch into chunks and controled by Bridge.
Scripting expert Xbytor, has written scripts for people that does this sort of batch processing over at PS-Scripts.com, he may be able to help.

  • Any free Universal software for image resizing?

    Hi all,
Most of the time i downloaded huge image files from the net and have no tools to covert it to smaller size (e.g. 176x220)so that I can send it to my mobile phone as wallpaper.
I tried using the Iphoto but it does not resize, it's more like cropping.
    Any ideas?

I use a really neat little program called ImageWell. It works great.
    http://www.xtralean.com/IWOverview.html
I remember having to search, like you, to find a good image resizing app. Then I found ImageWell. The current version of ImageWell is a Universal Binary.

  • Newbie to LR3 - Local sharpen after image resize ?

Maybe someone can point me to help. I just post to web on Flickr, no printing yet.
I started photo editing with PSE5 & have moved to PSE8 since. A Mark Galer book about PSE started me on a path of .raw editing & i've been using his scheme since. I hoped i was moving to a smoother overall process with LR3, but now that i've gotten it i have a lot more doubts. I can see improves through the develop phase (sort of a curves, grad filter, noise removal, lens correction). After that, i feel only lacks (with my current low knowledge level).
The things i want included past develop are these: image resize, local sharpening (and blurring - after image resize) smooth border capability (with choice of color). One way of course is to export to PSE8. I expected more from LR3, though - rather than just 2/3 of a job for 3 * the price.

Pete Marshall pointed out one of the quickest resources for information on using Lightroom's tools, but that's not a tutorial! LR is best learned using one or more of the on-line tutorials or LR books available......and then using it! Lightroom's non-destructive workflow has been tailored to fit the specific needs of the "digital photographer" for processing Camera RAW image files. Photoshop has a vast arsenal of both destructive and non-destructive tools for general image processing, but with no specific focus on usage.
Everything you stated in your last sentence can be done very easily in LR, but using an entirely different workflow organization than Photoshop.

    1) image resize, local sharpening (and blurring - after image resize) - This can be done using the LR Export function and adjusting 'Image Size,' and 'Output Sharpening.' NO, it is not the same methodology as Photoshop. NO, it is not as flexible. YES, it does a very nice job with the vast majority of "digital camera image files," once you get used to a different workflow.
    2) smooth border capability (with choice of color) - This can be done using LR's 'Slideshow', 'Print', and Web Modules, choosing the one most appropriate for your target usage. NO, it is not the same methodology as Photoshop, but it does a very nice job on the majority of "digital camera image files." LR also offers multi-media functions that are unavailable in PS.
In the final analysis you need to learn LR's non-destructive workflow procedures, editing tools and module functions, as a compliment to what you already know about using Photoshop. The two applications are mutually independent, but play together well when needed.

  • Rough Estimate for Cost of Developing Image Editing Tool?

    Hello all,
Anyone have an idea of what it would cost to have a flash developer create an image editing tool from scratch?  Normal tasks such as resize and rotation as well as redeye and color correction including auto sepia color woudl be needed.
    A ballpark figure will do.
    Any guesses?

I don't think you would be able to have "a" developer do it. It would require a goodly number of people. And as Bentley Wolfe says it won't be cheap. Certainly into 6 figures. No idea if it would be low or high 6 figures. And if it wasn't I would be very afraid of what you would get.

  • The new image resize box

I have signed up for Adobe CC and now have Photoshop CS 6 for the Mac installed and running.
When I come to use the image resize feature, I am still getting the same box as I had in CS5 instead of the new much improved feature.  Why is this?

CS6 doesn't have the "nedw much improved feature". Only Photoshop CC (CS7) has and that won't be avialable before mid June.

  • I scanned an image and want to use the image trace tool, but it doesn't pick up all the lines.  Is there a way to darken the lines before using the image trace tool?

I scanned an image and want to use the image trace tool, but it doesn't pick up all the lines.  Is there a way to darken the lines before using the image trace tool?  Help!

If the scan is in B&W, then play with the Threshold setting here
If it's in Color, then you will have to open the scan in a Raster editing software (like Photoshop) and play with the Brightness/Contrast settings to make the lines bolder.
