Phtoshop CS2 with .NEF files

Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my Adobe Photoshop CS2 (Win32) and .NEF files created in Nikon Scan 4
Here is screen shot for error which I getting:
No Nikon plug-in installed. Camera RAW - 3.7
Any suggestions?

Problems is I got a lot of files from friend of mine who scan it years ago and put to archive.
I don't have scanner to rescan all of them (more then 200 files)
I just want to open it to "save as"
BTW - he has no problem opening it in CS4 or CS5.
Problem only with my CS2

XMP files remain with NEF files in my folder.  Camera Raw suddenly reset leaving my edits gone.  Will XMP files enable me to resume with those lost edits?

I never tried this, but I'm pretty sure that with DNG files, Lightroom will ignore xmp files, even when you instruct Lightroom to "Read Metadata from File". Lightroom expects all the metadata to be in the DNG file, not in the xmp file.
Pick flags, as far as I know, are never written to xmp file; nor are they written to DNG files.
If you're going to make this transfer procedure work, you need to do it by either (a) embedding the metadata in the DNG file and send those back and forth; or (b) use RAW and xmp and then sending the xmp files back and forth (plus I guess you have to transfer the original RAW once to your editor)

  • Lightroom 3.6 Camera Raw 6.6 - Issues with NEF files

    Hello all,
I'm sure I'm not the only person with this problem, I'm a Nikon user and when I view NEF files in Lightroom 3, before the images loads completely it looks like it did on my camera but when the loading phase is done the picture darkens and it changes, sometimes darkens, sometimes changes tones.. What is happening here and is there any way around this with NEF files?  I love Lightroom but if I can't work with NEF the way they look on my camera then I'm going to have to make the switch over to Capture NX 2 and I really don't want to....  In addition I have no problems with JPEG files so I know the issue is isolated to NEF files.  I'm also on a Mac with 10.6.7 if that makes any difference.. not sure it does though.
    Please help!!

This is not just a characteristic of NEF files.  Adobe software and other third party software does not read the in camera settings, instead it applies default settings.  The initial image you see is probably the stored image that was processed by the camera, but it is replaced by the image rendered using the defaults from Lightroom.  The default camera profile is Adobe Standard, which does not match what you get from the camera.  Adobe has generated Camera matching profiles for Nikon and Canon cameras and a few others.  Go to Camera Calibration and select the same profile you have selected in the camera - it will have a name like Camera Standard, Camera Neutral, etc.  If you have other parameters set to nominal in the camera, this will be a close match to the JPG from the camera.  You can set a new default for Lightroom that will use the setting you select and it will use this when any new NEF files are first opened.  If you want the NEF file to open identical to the JPG from the camera then Nikon software is the only option.  If you were using a Canon, then Canon software would be the only option.

  • Problem with NEF files from Nikon D4

Hi everyone. I find a problem with nef files from my Nikon D4. When files are open in ViewNX2 (free viewer software from Nikon) they are perfect, as shooted... but in ACR they are very different... I use LR4 or CS5 with ACR 6.7 and the difference seems to be linked at D-Lighting function. My impression is that ACR dont read this option and picture are very very dark that original shootings. Anyone have this problem?

This question used to be answered in the FAQ before they revised it.  So, here we go again.  ViewNX is capable of reading all of the in-camera settings such as, camera profile, saturation, sharpness and other settings.  It is capable of doing this because it is Nikon Software, and they have the ability to program it to read the settings from their raw images.  Lightroom does not read those settings from Nikon cameras or any other brand of camera.  Part of the reason is that different camera makers store those settings differently.
When I first started using Lightroom I adjusted one of my images that represented what I normally shoot until it looked the way I wanted it.  Then I saved those adjustments as my default settings for the camera.  From that point onward, whenever I import images those settings are automatically applied, and it takes care of the vast majority of my images.  Of course, I still have to make individual adjustments.  But my default settings greatly reduce the amount of how they work that I have to do.
Active D-lighting is is one of those features that Lightroom does not recognize.  You would be well advised not to use it, or else create a preset to simulate its effect.  It will provide no benefit to your Lightroom work.
This is a fundamental difference with Lightroom, and something that must be understood and implemented if you are going to use the program effectively.
I realize this question was asked in the ACR forum and I referenced Lightroom throughout.  But the principle is the same, and the recommended procedure is the same.

  • Problems with NEF files in Camera Raw 5.3

I have problem with my NEF files in CR. I import them from my harddrive, they open as 8 bit NEF files, but in CR, the only option I have is a depth, no space, resolution or size option where it should be, under the image. I also can't click on the info line under the image to change depth, space etc.
I have the option to change depth from 8 to 16 bit, but when I do that, I can't work on the image in Elements because a dialogubox says its not adequate size (or something along those lines). It is almost as if there is either not enough information on my files, or that CR 5.3 can't read them. I have a Nikon d60 so that should be OK with the software. I also download my images with a cardreader so they should still be RAW files.
If someone could help me I would be grateful, it's doing my head in!!!

…but in CR, the only option I have is a depth, no space, resolution or size option where it should be, under the image. I also can't click on the info line under the image to change depth, space etc. I have the option to change depth from 8 to 16 bit…
In ACR with PSE, under the image you have just two options, changing the zoom and changing the depth (bits per channel):
Why do you expect anything more?
I can't work on the image in Elements because a dialoge box says it’s not adequate size (or something along those lines).
What is the precise error message? PSE 6 or 7, Windows or Mac?

  • PSE 9/Mac crashing with .NEF files

I've been using PSE 9 for a few weeks with no issues. Then I got a new camera, a Nikon D7000, and it started crashing regularly. I'm editing .NEF files (RAW from the Nikon). I've had messages saying it can't initialize because of a program error as well as insufficient RAM. (I'm using a MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM.)
I'm no computer expert and I'm not sure what to do. I've rebooted, quit all other apps, and would happily reinstall the software if I knew how (I purchased it as a download--do I redownload it to reinstall?).
I don't want to shoot in another format (I may not know computers but I know photos...) so I'm really hoping not to hear that PSE is incompatible with .NEF. or that I need to buy more RAM--which I'm not sure I can even add to this machine.
    Help?

    hi
i'm a full time stock photographer using a nikon D2XS and have imported almost 20,000 nef files with no problems.  the nef files are completely viewable and editable in elements 9.0 and organizer.
u might want to check that ur using the latest Nikon software.
or the adobe raw as mentioned already.
also, u might want to make sure that in ur camera's set-up menu that u have just the NEF format selected.  u could also reset the nikons defaults and reselect everything.
also in the adobe raw make sure that u have the correct camera selected in the camera calibration tabs.
    good luck

  • LR 2.3 artifacts with NEF files

I get some strange artifacts with a small number of my NEF files (Nikon D700) and LR 2.3, Here is an example compared to Nikon's Capture NX2. Sharpening is different but it is not the root of the problem, artifacts are still visible with 0 sharpening and no other adjustment.

Too high of the "Recovery" slider value on an image like this will will cause an ugly discontinuity along the juncture between the brightest areas that the Recovery slider affects and the midtone areas that it doesn't, because the dimmer parts of the bright areas have been darkened more than the brighter parts of the dimmer areas, if that makes sense.
Use more of the Toning curve and less of the Recovery slider.  Overuse of the Fill slider can have the same affect along the edge between the mid-tone ahd shadow-area boundary.  For an extreme image, I'd probably export to Photoshop and use the more sophisticated and controllable Shadow/Highlights operation.

  • Help with NEF files... blown out in Camera raw??

My Nef files look great until I use the magnify tool in bridge or open them in camera raw. Then all of sudden they instantly brighten and some of them look overexposed!! Please help... is there a default setting I need to change?? I'm using the Nikon d700 Adobe CS5.1

    1) if you are doing a raw conversion using Adobe raw converters (ACR/LR) then you shall not be confused w/ embedded JPGs (written by camera's firmware in your raw files) that you might see temporarily while Adobe software renders some inital preview using your default raw conversion settings (you might change those, including default camera profiles = for Nikon cameras Adobe supplies a standard profile and some profiles to emulate OEM settings, exposure correction, etc)
    2) you are are concerned that you in fact overexpose your raws (clipping in raw channels) then just download a free software = http://www.rawdigger.com/ and see the true raw histogramm (not jpeg based histogram that your camera shows), if your raw channels are not clipped then just dial negative expocorrection in ACR/LR and that is it... in most cases it is good to have raw histogram to be as close as possible (and sometimes even clip unimportant parts of the image - specular highlights for example are in many/most/all cases OK when clipped, because there no details for you in them) to clipping - because then you have a good signal to noise ratio for the most important parts of your image...

  • Using PS Elem6 on Netbook. Screen display size not working with NEF files

I use PH Elements 6 on my Netbook while traveling taking photos. I always  take photos in the RAW (NEF) format.
The problem is when I attempt to bring up the Editor.  It will automatically go to the Screen/Page for NEF file.  The problem is that the screen/window that pops up is too large.  The bottom of the pop-up is missing and there isn't a way for me to scroll down.  The missing area is where I need to go to Save any changes I make.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

ACR (and PSE in general) requires a minimum display resolution of 1024 x 768.  What is the resolution of your netbook?
If it is at least 1024 x 768, it may be that ACR is coming up at a wrong size.  You can try toggling into full-screen mode and back by typing the "f" key.
If it's less than 1024 x 768, then here's a clumsy workaround:  Use the tab key to cycle the keyboard focus through all the conrols in the ACR display.  As you hit tab, you'll see the different controls get highlighted.  Right after Saturation, it cycles through Help, Save Image, Depth, Done, Cancel, Open Image.  So you could tab to the appropriate button and then hit enter.
(Unfortunately, ACR, like many Adobe products, doesn't follow the Windows standards, which require that keyboard shortcuts be assigned to every button and that windows be movable using the cursor keys.)

  • Problem with nef files from my d5100 using cs4

I have cs4 I also have a nikon d40 and I just bought a Nikoin D5100 I cannot see the nef pictures using bridge cs4 how do I fix?

The DNG conversion in Bridge will only convert files that your version of Camera Raw already supports. You will need the latest version of the freestanding DNG converter program which is free and available from Adobe. I'm going to assume that you are Windows user. Here is the link to the Windows version of the program:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
You need to download the program and install it and run the program. It is not a plug-in, and it is not part of Photoshop, Bridge, or Lightroom.
Just one word of advice. When you start the DNG converter you will be prompted to choose a FOLDER containing raw files. Be sure to just choose the folder, but don't open it. If you open the folder the DNG converter will tell you that there are no compatible files. If you want to convert  just a single file, drag/drop that file onto the icon for the DNG converter. The program will start, and the conversion will take place.
Incidentally, I am 70 years old, and on the verge of retirement myself. I understand your situation completely. If you have any further questions about how to use the DNG converter, or whatever, feel free to ask. There are a bunch of very helpful people here who can get you through just about any problem.

  • How should NEF files from my D300 be dealt with?

I have a D300 and CS2. I have the CS2 version of Lightroom, PS and Bridge. I've been researching NEF files and their compatibility with the adobe applications I have. I'm confused on the best way to work with NEF files produced by the D300 directly with the versions of PS, Lr, and Br that I have. I hope I can work with the NEF files directly with the adobe products.
I've learned the following from what I've read. I think each version of Ps, Br, and Lr are very picky on which versions of NEFs they will support. This is due to the constant tweaking of the NEF format. The support for a certain NEF is dependent on when the version of Ps, Lr, and Br were released. In other words, there is only good support for the NEFs that are created by current cameras at the time of the release of the Adobe software. The new software doesn't support the older NEFs.   And the older software doesn't support newer cameras.
I've also read that I can get around this by converting the NEFs to a DNG file. The articles I read were a little old, but there seemed to be some concern about whether the dng format would stay around for the future. I don't think it had gained a lot of acceptance.
Can someone please tell me the best way for me to work with RAW files in the adobe software that I have. Is there a plug in available for CS2 that will allow me to use the NEFs produced by my D300? Is my only option to convert these to DNGs before using them, if I want to keep my current version of Ps, Lr, and Br?  If I convert them to DNG is the White Balance data available in Ps or Lr? Or, is the only other option to buy a more recent version of the adobe software? I don't plan to buy any new software now because I can't afford it. Even if I did, I'm concerned about backwards compatibility. Nikon considers the regular D300 as old. I don't think adobe does a good of supporting older camers in the newer software.
Can someone help me understand the best way to go about this. Thanks in advance for any help.

All that changes in the NEF file between cameras is the usually camera name line. This is shown by using a Exif editor such as Exif tool and changing the camera name to one supported in the version of ACR used by your particualr version of LR or PS
When ever a new camera comes out Adobe profiles the sensor to produce a calibration file for use in LR and ACR, so if you just change the camera name you will be stuck with the old calibration data and colour reproduction may suffer. You can,of course, use Adobes free tool to produce your own calibrations.
Adobe updates ACR and LR around every three months to include calibration data for any camera released since the last update. These updates are free. However once LR or PS reaches a new full release these updates are no longer provided. You have a choice, when working with older software, of either updating to the new version, or using Adobes free DNG converter to convert the file to DNG. Nothing is lost in this process. All the original data is retained. Obviously whatever new things may be included in the latest versions of either ACR or LR will not work in the older versions. So if you use the DNG converter on a camera released since LR 3 came out you can use it in LR 2, but the lens correction tool will not work. Equally if you have LR 3, but only have CS 4 or older versions of PS, you will have to render the file in LR before PS can recognise the lens corrections applied.
You say that Adobe doesn't do a good job of supporting older cameras. This is strange. All older cameras are fully supported in LR and PS. Adobe have never dropped support for any camera and they also provide the DNG format which ensures both backward and forward compatibility with their software.
As far as acceptance of DNG as a container for RAW information from cameras not gaining acceptance, again a strange thing to say. Presently it is the only open and documented format available. It has been submitted to the ISO for acceptance as an international standard. It is also used natively by several major camera manufacturers, including Hassleblad, Leica and to some extent by Phase one. There really is presently no other format around. If the manufacturers wanted to get together to develop an alternative nothing is stooping them. Unfortunately the two big players in the market, Canon and Nikon, resist this and continue with their own propitiatory formats. Whilst these may be supported into the future it isn't guaranteed. However as DNG is a fully documented format there is no more reason to think it will stop being supported than any of the other standard formats (such as pdf, tiff and swf) developed by Adobe.

  • Can't associate bridge cs5 with nef raw files

I have been trying to get win 7 to associate the bridge CS5 executable with NEF files.
It worked fine for CS4 and yes, i am going to file associations and choosing the bridge.exe for cs5 under x86 programs. It just ignores the choice and won't put it in the recommended program area.
I tried from the exploreer and control panel.
If i double click the bridge.esxe, it opens properly. it's just the auto associations which don't work.
    Any suggestions?
    thx

No it can't. It is possible to do but the process requires a using a fair bit of code to create a logo/watermark then using a cutom script to write the logo/watermark, the results are not good unless a background to the logo is used. It does take a fair bit of time to do each one though, so it's not something I would persue or spend time developing.
Here's one example, cr2 to jpg and text added, done in Bridge only!

That camera was recently supported for the first time by ACR 8.6, which needs at least CS6 to run.  You will never be able to open those raw NEF files in CS4, as there will never be an update for CS4.
Your choices are to upgrade, or to use the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.6 on each and every batch of raw NEF files in order to convert them to raw DNGs that you can open in CS4.
