Physical copies, apparent duplicates and the iCloud

I transfered all of my iTunes library from an old desktop to my new computer before I even installed iTunes. After getting everything up and running and installing, I selected the new library.
When I started to look through my library, I noticed that a great number (not all) had duplicates for some reason. One has an iCloud download logo next to it, the other will have my old ratings. It appears that the iCloud one is a copy on the internet and the other with the ratings is the physical file I transfered. Both seem to play without issue.
I have a couple of questions:
Which is the one I want? If it's in the iCloud, do I ever need a physical copy of it?
Should I delete the old and download the new version?
Should I simply leave the cloud version there and/or delete the old?
Why are some copies in the iCloud and others not included?
If it's in the cloud, should I go through the backup and delete copies for the sake of space (if I wanted more space)?
Should I delete the physical copies and the backup and create a NEW backup on the external drive I used to acknowledge that my purchases are now safe in the cloud?
It's confusing and a little scary. I just went through tons of literature to make sure I copied my iTunes library correctly so as not to lose all my purchases. Now it appears I have duplicates!

If you are syncing contacts with iCloud you should not be trying to sync contacts with iTunes too, if that's what you're doing. This may help you resolve your problem with duplicates: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4147.

You will need the previous owner's Apple ID and Password to:

Your notes should be stored in your backup, so if you have backed up the iPad and that backup does contain those notes that you deleted, you can try restoring from your backup. If you haven't backed up the iPad since you created those notes, they are gone.
If you backup with iCloud only, restoring from backup involves erasing the device and then going through the setup all over again and finally restoring from the iCloud backup. This article explains the process quite clearly.

If you backup with iTunes, connect the iPad to your computer, launch iTunes and right click on the device name on the left and select - Restore from Backup. But before you do that .... turn off auto sync in iTunes - without connecting the iPad - launch iTunes and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box at the bottom of that window in order to turn off auto sync.
Email messages are not stored in your backups.

Try to change your Apple ID back to your old email address (http://appleid.apple.com) in order to set up and activate the phone. After the set up please sign out of iCloud and turn off "Find My iPhone" (Settings > iCloud) - do that on all your devices -, then change your Apple ID to your new address again and then add your iCloud account on you devices again.

I'm sorry for the delay in my response but I was away for the weekend. I went through and tried all of above and still not working. To answer the question about connecting to another router ie Starbucks was not tried as I haven't had a chance to get over there yet, BUT I do have hot spot on my iPhone and I don't see that either. Currently I connected to the internet through the hot spot using Bluetooth, so I am able to use it but only if my phone is around. It is the only way that I can get the iPad online currently.
As for the answer regarding SSID/router changes, I am not very technologically sauvy but I do know that it was working perfectly for several months and just suddenly stopped connecting, but as I mentioned above every other device connects to the router in my house and nothing has been changed or added. It does seem weird that it won't find my iPhone when the hot spot is on and every other device will.
Thank you all for your responses, and please keep them coming. Is there anyway that maybe I changed a setting on my iPad accidentally that I am not aware of? By that I mean other than the obvious wifi on/off switch. I keep hoping the answer will be something silly, obvious and a quick fix.

You have to upgrade to Lion for the iCloud preferences to be available.

If you change your Apple ID you will need to sign in with the new information or password the next time you use an Apple service or feature that uses Apple ID. If you have multiple devices that use features and services that require an Apple ID, you will need to sign in again on each device.

I have a 10.6.8 mac and the icloud icon does not appear on the system preference, even if I'ved upgraded the software.

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mavericks preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is now non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mavericks, provided it meets the requirements.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Mavericks (10.9.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.

No.
If the iPhone is running iOS 7, activation lock included with iOS 7 will prevent someone from restoring the iPhone or completing the process.
If the iPhone can be restored, it cannot be restored from the iPhone's backup - only as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

I have one album where the first track was uploaded, and the other eleven tracks are all tagged as "Duplicates." These tracks were not uploaded to the iCloud. How can I force iTunes Match to upload these eleven tracks erroneously tagged as Duplicates?

I'm adding my 2¢ because I just "discovered" iTunes Match yesterday and decided to subscribe thinking there was no downside (doh!).
Well, firstly, there's the enormous downside of Apple's structure not being able to keep up with (what they should have known would be) enormous interest... my iTunes has been matching for >20-hours and has yet to reach half-way up my library. BTW: I thought I read the iTunes Match info fairly thoroughly prior to subscribing and did not see anything about it being for songs vrs full library.
And secondly, and even more important to me, is that Apple's method of determining duplicate songs is not robust enough, especially for classical music and audio books (e.g., LoTR). I have >12000 "songs" in my library, and Match has determined a boatload are duplicates. They are not of course and even if Apple's duplicate-determining algorithm just looked at disc & track numbers it would "know" that. Anyway, there's a fairly good chance I will not have one complete album upload/match out of >500 albums. That's nae Scottish, in anybody's book.
Gotta say, using Garage Band to individually alter >2000 "songs" on the off-chance that may assist Apple's duplicate algorithm to be correct is not gonna happen. If, after the matching/uploading is complete, I still have >even 100-not-duplicate-songs listed as duplicates, I'm getting my $29.95 subscription back.

HT5621 How can I change my Apple ID on the Icloud on my iphone? I changed it to a new address and the icloud wont let me update it on m phone and it is not registering my old address either because it no longer exists. please help!

It continues to ask me for my password for the old address nd when i enter it or have tried to change it, it does not recognise that address. Do I have to take y phone back to new to be able to log in to the icloud with the changed email address?

Sync with iTunes so you have a backup. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings. Restore the unit as New. Reconfigure for your new ID and password. Restore your apps, etc. from backup.

How do I upload the TV programmes that I have bought on my laptop, back up to the iCloud, so that I can download them again to watch them on my new desktop PC?

Is the status of the songs matched or uploaded? If they are matched then I don't know what it could be. If they are uploaded songs then it could be that the artwork is not embedded in the file. right clicking on a song and then pressing get album artwork does not embedd the artwork onto the file. You have to paste the artwork in for it to embed it. When it is embedded you can go to where the music file is stored on your computer and the artwork will be showing on the face of the file. sometimes you have to do this a couple of times for it to finally show up on the file. I know complicated and Apple needs to fix this issue, but until then this is the only thing that I see that has helped and then some of mine i'm still fighting with.
