Physical Memory is 72% when Chrome is open, and 40% when Idle.

This is insane and I have tried a lot of things. First, I increased the virtual memory to 6000mb (custom). Then i disabled the windows effects. Then unchecked everything on start up using msconfig. Still, computer is 39-40% on idle, then 70% when in chrome.
I heard this isnt normal, but I had this computer for at least 3-4 years. I am not too good with computers, so extra guidance would be appreciated.

Hi,
To fix this issue, I would like to suggest you try the folloing methods:
Method 1 : Use Google Chrome’s inbuilt task manager
To bring up the task manager on Google chrome just press the following key combination ( Shift + Esc ). The Task manager in Google chrome shows how much resource every web page and each of the chrome extensions are using . Right click on any process
and you can select from more categories of information . If you find any of them fluctuating and using too much of your ram and CPU resources . Changes might be that the page is infected or the extension is malfunctioning . select the process / extension and
end it . do a thorough scan of your system for any malware infection that could have happened possibly .
Method 2 : Remove all the extension in Google chrome
Sometime one or multiple plugins can be the reason why Google chrome uses a lot of your computers resources . use chrome’s extension manager to find out which of the extension is using more resources . Select the extension and end it . Restart chrome and
if the plugin works normally then the problem is solved .
Method 3 : Reset chrome
If you can’t find any problem through the above steps then thy Resetting Chrome . It  fixes most of the problems wit chrome . Before resetting chrome , do sync your bookmarks and other data with your Gmail account so that you don’t lose them
If you follow these three methods then most probably your problem will be solved . If it doesn’t then uninstall and reinstall chrome.
I would like to suggest run Memory Diagnostic Test and check.

I have the same sort of problem with 30-40 tabs, with memory usage growing until crash. It seems a lot worse after restarting from standby mode on Vista - it's often highly unresponsive for a while, then crashes.
I have a fair few plug-ins running, one of the benefits of Firefox.
Is their a way I can log memory use of parts of Firefox, particularly the plug-ins?

  • Why Firefox 5 eating up 1074424KB of my 2027520KB physical memory, with 9 tabs has loaded pages and 6 problem loading page as i stoped them?

Firefox was minimized i was doing something else but while switching to another application the screen got frozen, when it become normal i checked Task Manager and got Firefox is using 10744424KB (almost 53% of physical memory). As stated in question 9 tabs finished loading and another 6tabs showing problem loading page as I stopped them clicking on offline mode and when they stopped loading I switched to online mode.

Yes, Safari Web Content can use a lot of RAM.  However, I don't think that would be the cause of crashing; lots of memory use rarely causes crashes.  Poorly written software that runs in kernel space (AV software fits this), can cause this.
Safari Web Content is "caching" a lot of stuff.  More than I'd like it to.  If you have 47 tabs open, and close them down to 1, SWC will still often be taking up a lot of RAM.  If you quit and restart Safari it will give the memory back, though in general if the system is under memory pressure I think SWC will also release some more RAM.  In general I never notice this to be an issue.
I think with OS X Mavericks things may improve as well, based on details on the Safari tab, as well as with "Compressed Memory" which would help as your system approaches using all its RAM:

  • Is there a program I can use to retrieve corrupted .MOV files, from a HD memory card where some files will open, and others wont?

    Hi,
    I have a Mac OS X version 10.6.8 with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory.
I have recently shot some still and moving footage on my Cannon EOS 500 D (digital camera) using an AMICOE SD C10 8 GB high speed memory card.
After uploading these photos and movies onto my Mac, I am only able to open about 2/3 of the files that appear on the screen.  In the case of the movie files, I can see a number of the file icons, however about 1/3 of them will not open (I get a message saying that Quicktime does not recognise this file - yet it is a .MOV file. Interestingly I can see a small thumbnail for each of these files that will not open, however I am unable to expand the thumbnail into the larger size) and there are a number of photos that simply do not appear as a file or thumbnail.
Is there a program I can use to retrieve these corrupted .MOV and JPEG files from either my computer or the memory card?
Thank you for your interest in this question.
    Cheers,
    Shaughno.

  • How can I shutdown my Mac since my Google Chrome is "open" and Force Quit is not working

Can someone help me shutdown my mac?
Problem: Google Chrome is not responding, and force quit from the dock, and using the apple icon seems to not work in quitting Google Chrome. Because of this, I cannot shutdown/restart my macbook pro.

    Try this:
    Command+Control+Option+Power button
If that does not work, as a last resort, hold the power button for about 5 seconds until the MacBook powers off. Wait 30 seconds before starting up again.

  • How to prevent physical memory filling up and crashing Firefox (22.0) when watching Flash-based videos?

This happens maybe 30-50% of the time when I watch a video online, whether it be on YouTube or other streaming site. This usually happens when the video is at least 20 minutes long, and about 8-9 minutes in.
Looking at the Task Manager, my memory fills up to nearly its max (3.8-3.9 GB out of 4 GB) for a while before Firefox crashes. How can a video that is not very high definition take up that much physical memory space? After Firefox crashes, the RAM used immediately drops back below 1 GB.
Is this a Flash bug or a Firefox bug/leak? Or maybe my browser customization is at fault? It does not happen on Chrome.

Well, doomsdaze's rant didn't help solve my problem, but it actually makes me feel better about switching to Chrome.
Yes, I switched browsers, set up all-new extensions and settings, and accepted other inconveniences because I couldn't watch videos in peace on Firefox.
I had no idea there were so many others with this problem!

  • A lot of memory is used when multiple tabs are open

Is there anything that can be done about the insane memory usage in Firefox when multiple tabs are open? I often have 20+ tabs open and the amount of RAM that Firefox uses when I have it open with this many tabs is just ridiculous. As an example of this, I just restarted Firefox after checking the Windows Task Manager. The Task manager said that Firefox was using 1.2 GB of RAM. I did have 32 tabs open, but this seems excessive even for this many tabs. Some of the tabs were image heavy, but none of them had any video in them. I'd think 10 MB per tab of RAM would be plenty to cover these kinds of pages, maybe 20 MB at most. The upper end of that range would be 640 MB of RAM. Instead, it appears to be using an average of 40 MB of RAM per page when this many tabs are open.
Is there anything that can be done to reduce amount of memory being used when multiple tabs are open? It really shouldn't need this much RAM to serve this many pages.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Photoshop CS6 memory leak when idle and nothing open

Photoshop CS6 runs away with memory after being used and then going idle. If I open up PS and leave it, it will be ok but as soon as I open any file it will go up in memory usage (which is normal) but when I close all files and hide PS the memory will stay high never goes back down. When I close PS and re-open (no files open) again it idles at 300Mb memory but when I open a file then close it and then hide/idle PS it raises and stays around 1.25-1.5 GB if not more.
I have tried to Purge All, and even hide all menus to no avail. I have even tried to close Suitcase (eleminiate any font issues) and still same problem. I am running PS bone stock, no extra plug-ins.
Any ideas on why it would be doing this would be greatly appreciated!
    My Computer:
    Photoshop 13.0.1
    MacBookPro
    OS 10.6.8
CPU: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Mem: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    HD: 300GB (30GB Free)

Photoshop is not supposed to free memory when you close documents -- that's normal, because the memory gets reused.
Yes, opening a file makes the memory usage go up - because space is needed for the document and it's window.
None of what you said describes a leak, and sounds like perfectly normal behavior.

My curiosity is why used memory high all time for 24 hour not on peak hour only?, when i stop db console service it drop litle bit :D.
My suspicion is that Oracle is grabbing as much memory as it can on startup and it's simply holding on to it. Memory usage is generally not going to go down from some baseline once an application has been started. It's not like the CPU utilization, which can fluctuate quite a bit for any one application. Memory usage will likely increase if you run some memory intensive operations, but doubtful that you will ever see it go down much.

  • Beginning Dump of Physical Memory When Connecting iPhone

Hi everyone. I just moved to a new laptop and installed iTunes 7.5. When I initially connect my iPhone to the new laptop it pops up in the task manager that a new digital camera is found and begins the install process. About 15 seconds later the computer blue screens and throws up the "Beginning Dump of Physical Memory" error. This happens every time.
I've not tried to plug in my iPod yet so I don't know if that will do it as well but I really want my iPhone working on the new computer. It worked great on my old laptop.
    Anyone have any ideas?

If you have a logitech device on your machine, then this might be the cause. If so, do a search on this site to look for the fix.

Are you a Developer or QA or end user? Have you discussed this with your Developer at all? We seem to keep going around in circles. Your Developer should know what he did and how to deploy your app and CR assemblies and what to use.
Subject line is VS 2010, CR for VS 2010 is the only version supported in VS 2010. CR 2008 doesn't have 64 bit runtime. therefore it's not an option, your WEB Servers app pool MUST run in 32 bit mode only if you are using CR 2008.
"If I install the 64 bit version of SAP CR. Should the assembly change in the aspx files? different version number?" Nothing in your app, just deploy the 64 bit runtime and set your app pool to run in 64 bit mode.
If you are using CR for VS 2010 then you can run your WEB server in 64 bit mode and use CR for VS 2010 64 redist files on your WEB server. Then all DB Drivers, Printers and anything else MUST be installed in 64 bit versions. This includes what ever dependencies your UFL has, they too must also support 64 bit platform.
NO Additional requirements to be done or used for 64 bit WEB applciations, just requires IIS App Pool to be run in 64 bit mode and all dependencies available in 64 bits. ODBC DSN is created using the 64 bit ODBC Administrator, Printers support 64 bit applications.
And your UFL and any of it's dependencies must be located in as well as GAC'd if it's required, once again check with your UFL developer:
C:\Program Files (x86)\SAP BusinessObjects\Crystal Reports for .NET Framework 4.0\Common\SAP BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 4.0\win64_x64
I suggest you purchase a support case and work with one of our Rep's to sort this out.

  • Why does my mac use virtual memory when I still have free physical memory?

I have a 2011 i7 quad core mac, I was hoping it would scream. Most of the time it does. However when trying to edit within FCPX I get a very disappointing experience with many pauses and pin wheels if I don't close every single other program.
I have 8GB of physical memory and when i'm experiencing these problems I see that i still have 1-2 gb of physical memory free or inactive. At the same time FCPX is only using 2gb of memory. I just happened to keep an eye on the VM page in/outs and noticed them going up.
Right now i'm doing some browsing and emailing, that's about it.. its sat with over 4gb of memory free or inactive and yet still the page in/outs is still going up occasionally. It's currently at over 2 million page ins, and over 1 million page outs.
So with so much physical memory free why is this happening!? At the moment the mac feels nice and responsive, but if i start trying to use FCPX i'll start to experience these slowdowns, stalls... whenever i see these i see my main hdd is being accessed whilst the pinwheel is displayed.. I mean i get it, its VM, the hdd is too full, a bit fragmented perhaps, its stalling... but i've got gigs of memory sitting free or inactive... why wont the OS use it!!!
Would my experience improve if i took the plunge and got 16gb of memory instead of 8gb!?
    Thanks for your help!

Because without virtual memory, managing computer RAM is a royal pain in the ...
Virtual memory cost you nothing, and gains you huge benefits, even if you do not notice it
What cost you is when you need more real RAM than is available, and things are thown out of RAM, either back to the original file it came from (Read Only information), or pushed out to the swapfiles (/var/vm/*).  Then the system has to wait for slower disk access.  But even this is better than not being able to run the apps until you quit something else.
(speaking as someone that starting his professional life working with 1" punch paper tape, 80 columns cards, 7-track and 9-track mag tapes, 1MB disks (you heard me right 1 Megabyte), etc..., and trust me when I tell you that virtual memory is a god send to software development).
There are a lot of problems running a modern operating system with out virtual memory.  For example all the shared libraries and frameworks that provide services to an application would all need to be compiled into the application, which means every application gets bigger and instead of having a single copy of the shared library or framework, you would have dozens of copies wasting your RAM.
Without virtual memory, you would be required to find a contiguous chunk of RAM to run your application.  Think of this like going out to dinner by yourself, you can find any available table, but if you go to dinner with your extended family, you need a table for 10 to 15, and if you are going to dinner with your high school graduation class, you will need hundreds of seats all next to each other and a very large table.  In the later situations you have to wait until the resturante has enough contiguous space, which means you have to wait until other diners finish.  There may be lots of empty tables, but they are not together, and your group wants/needs to sit together.  Virtual memory allows gathering any 4K chunk of RAM, building a virtual memory map for all those random 4K chunks, and make it look like one big contiguous chunk of RAM, so you can run your application right away, no waiting.
Going back to shared libraries and frameworks.  This code will need to have addresses resolved so they branch to the correct locations during execution, and it will need to have addresses resolved on where its program variables are located in RAM.  Using virtual memory, you can local a shared object into RAM, then place it in everyone's virtual memory map at the exact same RAM address.  This means everyone can use the exact same code, and since everyone is using it at the same RAM address, it makes life so much easier for the operating system (translation, less work, less wasted CPU time, faster execution).
When a program wants to grow, for example a web browser loading a web page (and its images) into RAM, it needs to allocate additional RAM.  In the contiguous RAM model, you need to get control of the RAM that imediately following your program, but if that RAM is being used by someone else, you have to wait until that program goes away.
Virtual memory provides protection from another program looking at and modifying your program's RAM.  Malware would just love for virtual memory to go away.
You want virtual memory.  What you do not want is excessive paging activity.
If you are concerned, then you can launch Applicaitons -> Utilities -> Terminal.  Once you have a terminal command prompt, enter the following command:
    sar -g 60 100
which will tell you the number of 4k pages written to /var/vm/pagefile ever minute for 100 minutes (modify the numbers to suit your tastes).  You can then go about your normal usage, and come back later to see how much you have been using the pagefiles.  If you have mostly zeros, and an occasional small burst, this is noise, and not worth worrying about.  If you have sustained pageout activity, with higher numbers, then you should either consider running less things all at the same time, or looking for an application that is being greedy with its memory use (or has a memory leak), OR get more RAM for your Mac if you need to do all those things at once.
But do not complain about virtual memory.  Life would be much worse without it.  Then again if you have a better idea, write a research paper, and get operating system vendors (as well as hardware vendors) to implement your ideas.  I am serious, as I've seen many accepted computing ideas be overturned by good new ideas.
