Physically-compatible DVD drives

Hi,
I'm a new owner of a 2010 Mac Pro. My intention is to add a second DVD drive for use with a CD ripper to copy all my CDs to iTunes. However, I added a Sony DVD-ROM 1615S from an old PC, but even after removing the tray's frontage (that section that can be removed from the front of the actual tray, not the bezel) to reduce the height, I found it would not pass through the Mac Pro's opening. So, how can I make sure I'm buying a drive whose tray can be modified to fit through a Mac Pro's slots? Please don't tell me it's just hit and miss
Many thanks,
SiR G.

Hmm, I have to admit that being given the option of only one drive in the UK is not exactly ideal - though I appreciate the responses!
Let me expand: I'm looking for a second drive to use for CD ripping, and it has to meet the following specifications:
Accurate Stream capable
Non-caching
Reliable and documented sample offset values
C2 Error Correction
The DAE Drive Features Database lists 168 such drives. The links provided offer just three drives: two are without model numbers so their features cannot be determined, and the third (the Pioneer) is, as yet, unlisted on the DAE.
sigh I can't help but feel disappointed by Apple, despite many years of loyal consumerism.
Anyway, thanks again for the responses. But I'm going to to have to hold out for something better. Anyone?

  • Compatible DVD Drive problem on Satellite U200

I am over in Iraq and my commander's cd drive quit on the Satellite U200 laptop. The drive that was in there was UJDA765 which cannot burn DVD's. The problem with that drive is it quit seeing DVD's and the CD part only worked sometime and then it made noise.
I looked for a compatible DVD burner to replace it with and found UJ-822B. Several sites said it was compatible and I found people that say they were using it. Can anyone tell me if it really is? I already had the drive shipped here. Is there something that I need to do to get the laptop to see it? It does not show up in the hardware section, but it has power and opens and closes correctly. I have moved to the point of considering flashing the bios, I have done that many times but do not see any benefit as the changes in the new BIOS.
If I was wrong, can someone tell me a DVD burner that is compatible?

    Thanks Barrie,
I ordered the 765 and installed it, however now I am getting the pxe driver error on bootup and the drive is not found. I checked the in the bios and saw no problems, I did change the order of bootup and that did not resolve the problem as I found that recommended on several sites.
I removed the battery and checked the connections but the plug it plugs into is soldered to the board so that is not a problem. The old drive had a cd/dvd (755 model), it is still found but only the CD works, the dvd does not.
I thought about replacing the laser on the drive itself, but now that I have the new drive and it still is not working I am not sure. I am going to replace the bios with the newest version but other than that I think this laptop is just shot.

Are current ide optical drives (Pioneer 110, for example) supported at all under OS9.2? Not too bothered about iTunes etc support but do need Finder read and Toast burning support.

  • DVD drives for an older powermac G4??

Is there a list somewhere of compatible DVD drives for an older Powermac G4? My brother wants to upgrade it and I have no idea what to do...help?

I'd recommend upgrading to a DVD±RW drive, rather than installing a new DVD-ROM drive or combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. The Pioneer DVD burners are highly-recommended by Forum users, because of their native support within the Apple iApps (iTunes, iDVD, etc.) burning programs. You can get a good deal on one here, which is the same drive that's sold in Pioneer's retail packaging, carried by Best Buy, Micro Center, etc. Other branded drives may require the easy use of "PatchBurn," to create a drive support profile for them. I recently installed an 18x Memorex DVD±RW drive (manufactured by LG) in a B&W G3, and with the help of PatchBurn, it's natively recognized by OS X. Internal (ATAPI) DVD burners are available at electronics, office supply, and computer retail stores. Be aware that many major electronics manufacturers (HP, Sony, Memorex, etc.) outsource the production of their optical drives, so you're buying a rebranded drive. If you watch your local retailers' weekly sales, you can usually get a good deal on one for $40 or less. If you purchase from an online dealer, you can undoubtedly get it for less - such as the link I provided.

  • How to get hardware Ids of a CD/DVD drive?

    Hi,
I am trying to get the Hardware Ids of installed CD/DVD drives. Is there any API (in win SDK, for native c++ app) which I can use to get the hardware ids?
    Example:
    IDE\CdRomhp_DVD_A__DH16ABSH______________________YHDF____
    IDE\hp_DVD_A__DH16ABSH______________________YHDF____
    IDE\CdRomhp_DVD_A__DH16ABSH______________________
    hp_DVD_A__DH16ABSH______________________YHDF____
    GenCdRom
Actually I am trying to differentiate between physical CD/DVD drive and virtual CD/DVD drive.
    Thanks,

  • Satellite 1410-902: Which DVD drives are compatible?

My CD in Toshiba s1410-902 is broken and I would like to change it to DVD reader or DVD recorder. The problem is, that not all IDE CD/DVD drives will work with this Toshiba. BIOS accepts only definite drives some of manufacturers, but I don't know which one.
Where can I find the coplete list of copmatible DVD drives for this model of Toshiba?

    Hi
If you will buy a drive for your notebook you have to check the physical size of the drive.
The drive settings (master/slave/csel) are very important because you cannot reset these settings like on the normal desktop PC drive.
I have found this CD-RW/DVD-Rom combo drive: P000352490
This drive should be compatible with Satellite 1410.
But of course, you can contact the ASP in your country if you want to order supported parts.

  • Satellite A200-195: What CD/DVD drive is compatible?

    Hey Guys and gals,
I have had a look and asked Toshiba but no answer given so thought I would ask the experts here.
My DVD RW in my laptop TS L632D Has died and I need a new one.
So what one can I buy and fit without problems.
These drives are known to have issues with conflicts etc... so a different drive would be better.
So what do you guys and gals suggest.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hi
Thank you very much that you are seeing us as experts :)
We all here are Toshiba notebook users and as you probably dont know this is a user-to-user forum. :) so maybe not really experts ;)
To be honest its not known to me that this CD/DVD drive causes issue.
As you probably dont know every CD/DVD drive doesnt support all possible CDs or DVDs from different manufacturers.
Some CDs and DVDs are more compatible and some CDs or DVDs are not fully compatible.
However, the point is that you need a new CD/DVD drive.
I checked the A200 user manual (can be downloaded from the Toshiba page) and there is a list with some compatible drives.
Check the user manual page 6 and 7
You can also call the ASP in your country. The guys known what CD/DVD drives are compatible with your notebook!
    Bye

  • How can I determine what internal DVD drives are compatible w/ my G5?

I'd like to put a new DVD drive in my G5. It's one of the original 1.8 dual machines, with some extra RAM. I'm having trouble with the drive these days, and I'd like to figure out what drives are compatible. Thoughts?

I cannot speak for all drives but today I installed a Pioneer 710 ( same drive as 111 ) in place of the original Pioneer 106.
I have only tested it with Toast to burn a DVD-R and playing a CD and all is well.

  • How do I know if new Optical DVD drive is Compatible?

My internal DVD burner has gone 'kaput'.
My external freecom DVD burner now ejects every disc I put in it as soon as the USB is connected to my computer! 'sigh'.
    So...
*I am thinking of replacing my internal DVD drive but how do I know which one to buy and if it is compatible?*
    Any advise appreciated!
    Thanks

  • How to make the CD/DVD drive compatible on Satellite 5000-204

    Hi all,
I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

    Hi buddy
First of all thank you for participation in the forum its always nice to have users who shares the own experience and knowledge.
Thanks you also for this info how to make the CD/DVD drive compatible.
But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)
    Cheers mate

  • External DVD drive compatible with Windows 8

I am looking to purchase an external DVD drive to use with the U430 laptop which is running Windows 8.  Which units does lenovo offer that can run in this OS?  Would the 0A33988 work; the specs only list Windows 7.  I don't think the DB60 will work in Windows 8.
    Thanks
    joe

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

  • Ts-L633a DVD drive not compatible with Windows 7 64bit upgrade

Ts-L633a DVD drive on my Pavilion Dv7 1232nr is not compatible with Windows 7 64bit upgrade but will work fine if I downgrade back to Vista 64bit so what DVD drive is there other then the TS-L633a drive that I already have that is compatible with the Windows 7 64 upgrade so that I can buy and install on my laptop.

Here's one out of nowhere:  do you have CD/DVD software that includes Sonic DLA or something like it?  I've seen that take over drives and prevent normal operation.
If you right click on the drive and hit properties, are there any suspicious looking tabs?
Total WAG, and about 1% likely, but there you go.
