Physically disable wi-fi & bluetooth or the next best thing

We have updated our Mac Pro towers and on the old towers I was able to open up the tower and disconnect  the airport and bluetooth cards. I don't see any option for doing that on our newer 12-core units, or am I missing something?
If I can't unplug Airport and Bluetooth, what is the next best thing?
I have tried terminal commands    sudo ifconfig en2 down              but that's the same as selecting Turn Wi-Fi Off and a user can simply select Turn Wi-Fi on.
For now I have turned wi-fi and bluetooth off and removed them from the network menu which is pretty good, but someone can probably easily press + on the network prefs page and be back online, so I'm looking for a little more security that what I've done to remove possible outside connections.
(FYI: please don't ask why, this is a security measure and we only want clients to access the local network FTP server to send files to the outside world. This has saved the company a few times from blame as files need to physically leave our system or go thru the FTP server)

a user can simply select Turn Wi-Fi on
Instead of deleting, use the gear Icon and choose "Make Service Inactive"
This appears to require Admin access to make unlock the lock to make active again.

  • I want to play an Elder Scrolls game on my iPad.  What's the next best thing?

You know, like Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim.  A full on rpg.  I would settle for something with a similar feel to it, a science fiction setting might even be ok.  If I can't play an Elder Scrolls game on my ipad, what's the next best thing?
    Thank you.

A fair number of folks ask here for certain types of apps. In you search the app store you will get at least a couple that look like rpg games.  But the form factor is not real good.     Rage hd would give you a feel for  what tou and cannout get on tablet.   Pretty good graphics, pretty rough controls.

  • So iWeb is dead? what is the next best thing for a beginner?

    Hi Guys,
I have my new Mac and i want to build my first website....with iWeb dead, what is the next best web builder for a beginner like me...? I want to creat a blog add the odd photo and link to my twitter page. Thats about it.....any suggestions?
    Many thanks
    Ian

Are you saying that you have an iWeb blog hosted on a 3rd party ftp server which allows visitors to add comments? That would be a first since the following has always been part of iWeb's Help file:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a 3rd Party Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
The following is a screenshot of  iWeb Help on publishing to an ftp server:
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two feature will be broken.

  • Next best thing to prores?

i got very excited seeing this new ken stone post about making great looking dvds from an HDV timeline...
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_timeline_to_sddvd.html
but then of course I clicked I don't have prores as I am on FCP 5.
pretty sure the answer is no - but is there any way to download/acquire the prores codec and use in FCP 5.1.4?
assuming the answer is no - what would be the next best codec to use - AIC?
    kind regards
    Hugh

*THe next best thing would be uncompressed 10-bit HD. But you need a pretty hefty RAID array for that.*
Remember that uncompressed will be the export AFTER you've edited, and when you are about to encode.
You don't need RAID speed, to my knowledge, to export this way because the file will eventually be encoded to DVD, not played out.
However, while not needing the speed, you will need a sufficiently large hard drive or two to store the uncompressed HD file.
I've followed Patrick's suggestion on motion jpeg at 75% and it does produce some good looking files.
However, DVCProHD also is an excellent alternative and because our footage originates with it, we stay with it

  • Its a 5S,I couldnt automatically connect to an already paired bluetooth device the next time.Have to forget that device then re establish each time.Am i missing any setting that does it ?Also

Its a 5S,I couldnt automatically connect to an already paired bluetooth device the next time.Have to forget that device then re establish each time.Am i missing any setting that does it ?Also if i turn on the bluetooth via settings and turn off it via control center, the settings page still reflects its on ,is that a bug in IOS ?

    What kind of Bluetooth device?
When you turn it off in Control Center, are you looking at the Settings page? If so, you need to close control center for it to reflect the change. When you turn Bluetooth off in Control Center and look on the Status Bar, what do you see? Do you see the gray Bluetooth icon? If you have Settings closed and turn Bluetooth off on the Control Center and then open the Settings app, do you still see Bluetooth enabled?

  • So Apple is making it too hard to buy the new iphone, what is the next best

The nearest apple store is about an hour and a half away for me. I'm told that to get a 3G I should show up at the store at around 7:00 a.m.
WHAT? Apple thinks that they can treat longtime customers like this? I am appalled!
I have already waited weeks to let the buzz die down a bit, But this is just nuts.
My Dumb phone is dying, and I will soon buy a new phone, I wanted it to be the new iphone but I don't think that I will risk the gas and time to drive that far with a maybe.
What do you think is the next best choice and why?

The fact that I have spent my money on over a dozen Apple computers over the years sure should matter to them. But no, the other people should get good service also!
I'm a little confused. Why do you think you're getting bad service and being treated badly at all because they recommended you come early to get the phone? The iPhone is a very popular item. A lot of people want it, and the phones are being made quickly and shipped out by the boatload to stores around the world. Apple has started opening their stores at 8am (that's two hours earlier) in order to help with demand, to make sure there is more store time to serve all the customers (is that not good service?).
If the store is a first-come-first-serve situation, then you're being given exactly the same service as all other customers, and it's not bad service. It's just the best they can manage given the huge demand for this product. If you were running the store, what would you do? Ask everyone who called to bring all receipts to show how much they've spent at the store and the ones who spend the most get to come in first and get the iPhones while the rest wait? I mean, it'd be nice if all Apple stores treated everyone like kings: "Hello, sir, there's 500 people in the store buying iPhones, but we STILL have one for you, and a private table over there to fill out all AT&T forms. Would you like someone to wave a peacock fan over your head so you don't get hot? Come right this way...espresso?"
I don't think they have enough employees or room for that. Not to mention iPhones.
Now some stores have allowed customers to reserve phones. You might talk to your store manager, discuss your situation (the long drive) and see if this can be done.

  • Graphical glitch with The Next Big Thing

I have a graphical glitch whilst playing The Next Big Thing. The character keeps disappearing or 'flashing' on/off. It's quite annoying and I don't know what to do.
There doesn't seem to be any ways of adjusting the graphics, probably because it's a 2D game.
I went through the apple support but I only get two choices. Either schedule a call or ring them myself later. I can't do either because I'm working abroad and don't have access to a phone.

I bought this from the App Store so I would presume I should get a refund from them.
For that kind of fix you can use the Report a Problem link in your receipt or the Purhases section of your iTunes account.

  • I am physically disabled and having trouble with the sensitivity of the screen on my iPad mini - any suggestions?

I am physically disabled and having trouble selecting apps because of the sensitivity of the screen - any suggestions on what to do?

I would think assistive touch would be exactly what you are looking for.  It's engaged using the Accessibility method I described above.
Here's the writeup about assistive touch from the iPad User Guide:
AssistiveTouch AssistiveTouch helps you use iPad if you have difficulty touching the screen or pressing the buttons. You can use a compatible adaptive accessory (such as a joystick) together with AssistiveTouch to control iPad. You can also use AssistiveTouch without an accessory to perform gestures that are difficult for you.
Turn on AssistiveTouch: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch. To set Triple-click Home to turn AssistiveTouch on or off, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-click Home.
Adjust the tracking speed (with accessory attached): Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch > Touch speed.
Show or hide the AssistiveTouch menu: Click the secondary button on your accessory.
Hide the menu button (with accessory attached): Go to Settings > General > Accessibility >
    AssistiveTouch > Always Show Menu.
Perform a swipe or drag that uses 2, 3, 4, or 5 fingers: Tap the menu button, tap Gestures, and then tap the number of digits needed for the gesture. When the corresponding circles appear on the screen, flick or drag in the direction required by the gesture. When you finish, tap the menu button.
Perform a pinch gesture: Tap the menu button, tap Favorites, and then tap Pinch. When the pinch circles appear, touch anywhere on the screen to move the pinch circles, then drag the pinch circles in or out to perform a pinch gesture. When you finish, tap the menu button.
Create your own gesture: Tap the menu button, tap Favorites, and then tap an empty gesture placeholder. Or, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch > Create New Gesture.
Lock or rotate the screen, adjust iPad volume, or simulate shaking iPad: Tap the menu button, then tap Device.
Simulate pressing the Home button: Tap the menu button, then tap Home. Move the menu button: Drag it to any location on the screen.
Exit a menu without performing a gesture: Tap anywhere outside the menu.

  • Conversion of Flash to the next big thing...HTML5??

I have a lot Flash animations and tutorials with lots of buttons for navigation, text boxes for user input, and a lot of ActionScript 3 code. You can see what I've done at http://preparatorychemistry.com/Bishop_animations.htm and  http://preparatorychemistry.com/Bishop_Tutorials.htm. I have Flash CS6.
Every once in awhile I search the Net for information about how to convert my animations to something that will work on iPads. I did that again today, and I'm once again confused. I tried Swiffy, but many of my files are too big or have code it doesn't recognize. What are people doing for this? What's the next thing for animations like mine? Is it HTML5 for sure? Will HTML5 do what my animations and tutorials do?
    Thanks for the help

You can get a Developer Certificate and the Provisioning Profiles by signing up (and paying) to become an Apple Developer at https://developer.apple.com
You can distribute AIR apps outside of iTunes by using a type of Provisioning Profile called "Ad Hoc" which limits you to distributing up to 100 devices, all of which you must have the serial number of.
You can add the serial numbers of up to 100 devices in your dev account and then create a Provisioning Profile that only allows installation on those devices. You then send out the app and the profile to users who add the two files to their iTunes app and in turn connect their device to iTunes via USB and install the app.
Ad Hoc distribution is for testing purposes rather than bypassing the App Store!

  • Scala - The next big thing

    Hello, friends!
I tell you what the main flaw in Java is: it is not functional.
I tell you functional and object oriented programming languages, like Scala, will be the next generation of programming languages.
I tell you what language will substitute Java: Scala (http://www.scala-lang.org/).
    Cheers!

First, I basically said that yes, it's possbile to use Java APIs in Scala. What I meant by the question is that it would be nice to have the APIs written in Scala (and sure you have some purely Scala APIs) and since you're so eager to promote it, you could do that, not? :-D

  • HT4623 I don't have iOS on my iPad. What's the next best software upgrade?

iPad runs very slow. Do I need to upgrade software?

Yes you have iOS on the iPad - you have to have some version of it. You may want to trouble shoot the slow iPad before you update to to iOS 6 which is the next version.
Try this and see if it helps. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Try this a well. Quit all apps completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • The very best thing about the retina display

Do you know what is the best thing about the retina display? the answer is they've solved the issue of the dead and stuck pixels thing you know how because the pixels are very very small so u can't see if it's working or not some day you will walking around holding your new ipad and you don't even know the plenty pixels that are dead and you can't notice them HAHAHA that was a good one LOVE YA APPLE.

I doubt that's the reason Apple spent the money on retina displays, but a good observation.

  • The next big thing...lets make our own!

with the introduction of the n90 we saw a move into a new technological era soon the n90 was followed by other nseries devices the introduction of the n80 saw a huge wave of interest and also advances in functionality now we have the n95 which to me is the successor of the n80 my question is whats next?
I want to use this post to see what we the users hope to get next features and design here is what i want to deal with
Design: flip bar slide dual slide twist(n93) communicator-what design should be used?
Interface: tap/keypad touchscreen(p990) with qwerty full touchscreen(lg prada)-what interface should be used?
Memory: what should the internal memory be? Should a memory card slot be included? What is the max memory should the phone be capable of?
    Dimensions(dependant on form factor)
Included Applications(msn messenger? File browser? Maybe a document viewer and editor?)
Features: what features should be standard? What new features should be included?
Here is my opinion: twist keypad internal 1gb external up to 8gb with ability to increase via fw updates standard features gps camera main and secondary bluetooth with a2dp irda upnp wifi (all connectivity) high speed 3g basically dont leave anything out that we already have! But improve on them!
New features- really I DONT know what next i would like to see included on a mobile! Maybe full screen caller and when i exit the camera app and return to it it shouldnt go back to the default but my user settings should remain real full web browsing as i would on my pc including flash sites
Please add to this post in the same format as i have

Better VideoRecording with efficient Digital Imagestabilisation not mechanical one its to Space Consuming.
some more WorkMemory and reduced memoryleaks are also a
wish to have a device that works stable with multiple open
applications at a time NAVigation Mail TelephoneApp in Syncronous parallel Usage if needed.
For Reduced Power Consumption it would be also interessing
if the Device is able to automaticlly switch poweroff dynamic parts in the system if they are not in Use and if they are needed to microboot this function into the running
base OS System. So a System that reacts automatic on that
what the user currently needs in a active Status.
