Pick whip in Illustrator

In the links pallet it would be REALLY handy to be able to pick whip to Bridge to repair missing links.

A pick whip is used in other Adobe products like Encore and After Effects to create links between elements.  In After Effects you can use it to assign the attributes of one element to a different attribute of another element in an expression, such as linking the rotation of one element to the size of another element so that rotating the first object results in a corresponding size change in the other.  In Encore it is used to link a timelines and menu buttons in the project flow chart.
Does that answer your question?

  • How do I find where a Pick Whip Link goes

I've long ago created a bunch of pick whip relationships in a project, and can no longer find where the links go.
If I look at the code it says
    content("Ellipse 1").transform.scale
But I have about 100 Ellipses in this project.  And have no idea which one it is.
Is there anyway to back track through the connection?

The expression must be written something like this:
    thisComp.layer("Shape Layer 1").content("Ellipse 1").transform.scale
That tells you which comp and which layer Ellipse 1 is in.
An expression that just says content("Ellipse 1").transform.scale will throw an error.
If you have a zillion Elippse shapes in that layer then they should be in numerical order unless you renamed them. Just go to the layer named and then go to the bottom of the Elipse Layers. If the Ellipse is nested inside another ellipse then the same thing appies. Unless you renamed the layers there is only one Ellipse 1 in a shape layer that has a transform.scale property. Elipses nested inside elipses do not have transform properties. Only size and position.
If you have a zillion layers with the same name and you don't know which ones have an Ellipse then use CS6's search feature by deselecting everything in the timeline and then typing in Ellipse. Only layers with Ellipse in them will show up.

  • AE CS5 Quick Question re: Missing Pick Whip buttons

So I'm working through an exercise in this book and have hit a standstill. As you'll see in this screenshot, I'm not getting drop down arrows beside my lower set of Achor, Position and Rotation properties, which in turn means I can't call up the Pick Whip buttons I need for the next step (joining the two compositon's properties).
But the book is telling me to tie the two compositions Anchor, Position and Rotation properties together using their individual Pick Whip buttons. I've gone back over every step in the excercise and have made absoultely sure I've done everything asked so far. I also dug around as much as I could on my own before posting here since I don't want to waste anyone's time with what feels like a crazy simple problem.
But I just. can't. make those buttons appear. I can only see the Pick Whips for the overall layer, not the properties.
    Help!

You can't use an expression pick whip until you make an expression. opt-click mac or alt-click win on the property stopwatch to make one.

  • Can't find the pick whip in AE CS4

Well, not completely the case, there is a pick whip on each of the layers, however, there isn't one where I need it.  i.e. I'm trying to attach the motion tracking attach point, to an effect on a different layer.  or on the same layer as in this pic example.
    Am I missing something?

Alt+click the stopwatch and an expression pickwhip will appear.

  • Pick whip tool feature request

I've been a long time After Effects user and have found the pick whip tool to be a time saving and handy feature when creating scripts and links. Any chance of having this feature enabled for InDesign for those creating iPad apps?
While I do realize that this isn't the venue to post this kind of stuff perhaps someone can provide a link to the correct forum. Alternatively I do plan to attend adobe max in May and if there's staff on site whose willing to listen I can show them the iPad app I'm working on that would definitely be able to take advantage of such a feature and workflow.

A pick whip is a UI widget that looks like a coil on a button. When you want to link content for example placing an image on the page, you can use it. Let's say you can see your Finder window beside the InD document window. To place an image, you'd select the image box, then drag from the pick whip widget (presumably on the options or control bar). It drags out a little line and then you put the end of the line on the image file in the Finder window. And when you release it, it does a fun little wiggly noodle retraction. And the content is linked or placed.
The downside of that is it assumes that you can see your other content/files beside your document window, or you are using a file viewer inside of the application and have it displaying the content you want to link to.

  • Illustrator color picker position on dual monitor mac

    o/
Is there a way to control where the color picker appears in illustrator cs5.5 on mac os lion 10.7.3?
I have a mac pro with a monitor and a cintiq, the monitor is the "active" monitor, it has to be for my use, and the cintiq is the secondary monitor.
I have everything set up now so illustrator "lives" on the cintiq, except for the color picker that insist on popping up in the middle of the normal monitor, and if I move it, next time it does not remember I moved it.
Every other dialog I've come across behaves nicely, and sticks to the cintiq, but the color picker dialog does not.
Hopefully someone out there has an answer, thank you very much for your time!
    Kind regards,
    dukk

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply, however I don't want to swap "main" monitor as that causes all other kinds of issues
I only use the cintiq for illustrator, everything else on the main monitor.
So I'm looking for a way to have those last couple of windows follow every other illustrator dialog, such as save etc to the cintiq.
    Kind regards,

  • My color picker in Illustrator 18.1.0 is broken. It is a solid red bar instead of showing all of the colors. Any ideas?

Color picker bar on illustrator cc is broken. It is a solid red block instead of showing all of the colors.

    Falcon Design,
It seems that  the issue is caused by a corrupt folder called en_US or similar (depending on language) within the Adobe Illustrator 18 Settings folder, see post #7 by Jules in this thread,
    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1595766
so the solution should be to move or rename that folder (or the whole Adobe Illustrator 18 Settings folder).
You can find the folder in Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed.
As a temporary roundabout way, you can select the lower rectangle to the right of the rainbow and DoubleClick to apply that to change the top rectangle and the values: the lower colour is the right one.

  • HTML Panel for Illustrator plugin

    Hi
I'm adapting the Illustrator CC SDK Tutorial plugin, which has a Flash based UI (Tutorial UI) and trying to replace the Flash UI with an HTML5 extension-based one.
I'm having some issues which break down into two parts - (a) HTML5 panels and (b) Events from HTML5 Extensions
    HTML5 Panels
In the tutorial, the plugin is divided into two parts, the plugin and the plugin panel controller. Since the original has a flash UI, the panel controller class inherits from FlashUIController (part of the SDK common code).
    1) Do I need a panel controller class for HTML5 extensions and if so, what should they be based upon? There doesn't seem to be an equivalent library for HTML extensions.
    2) If I don't need a panel controller, what do I need to put into the plugin code to bind that panel to a particular menu item etc.
    Events
So far I have written a new HTML5 extension (in Extension Builder 3) which does nothing other than dispatch an event (using CSInterface().dispatchEvent(evt)) when you hit a link. So far so good.
When I debug it in illustrator it appears as expected under Window->Extensions and it is getting past the event code so I am assuming that the event is getting dispatched properly.
The problem is I cannot seem to get that event picked up by Illustrator.
I've added a AINotifier for the event in the main plugin code along with the other global event listener code, but am not sure that is the right place. The main Notify method of my plugin certainly isn't receiving it.
    3) Is this the right approach? I'm a bit stuck for ideas - and the lack of samples (official or otherwise) is hampering me at the moment.
    4) Is there a way of debugging the event generation to see if it is really getting dispatched?
I won't post my code here since I have editied it heavily and its a right mess, however I am struggling with the concepts involved and hope someone can point me in the right direction.
As you might be able to tell, I'm new to plugin development and my C++ is pretty rusty. It is quite possible I am missing something fundamental here, but any help you can provide will be useful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    Hi Hui
Well, sort of, although I've made a bit more progress now and the events part seems to be working.
I originally thought that fPPLib was specifically for Flex/Flash but I now realise that it is the main PlugPlug interface (which now includes HTML5 panels - right?)
I think what I really need is HTML5 panels 101 (for Illustrator). The exmples in this forum are InDesign specific and all the c++ libraries are different. Also nothing I've seen so far shows how to make an extension work from within Illustrator's menus (as opposed to just from Window->Extensions).
I have a plugin which requires input parameters from the user.
What I am trying to do is.
    1) Create an HTML5 extension panel which will collect values from the user.
    2) Attach that panel (or is it a modal dialog) to say Object->Filters in the main Illustrator menu
    3) Have that panel load previous plugin parameters (*from the current session)
    4) Validate the user values in the panel.
    5) Make the panel communicate those values to the plugin
    6) Show/Hide the panel as required (i.e. open it from a menu item, close it when done).
Also, in the original flash panel which I am trying to adapt, there is a lot of ActionScript in the mxml file.
Where does all that go now? Is that what ExtendScript is for (and if so are there some useful tutorials on it anywhere?)
I know that is a lot of questions. Apologies - I'm new to this and impatient to make some real progress.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Align Stroke in After Effects

Shape Layes has almost everything that Illustrator has, except for the abilty to align the stroke to Inside, Outside or Center. Is there a way to do this?
I want this but in After Effects!

in the shape layer, click on the "Add" button, and chose "Offset Paths"
You can manually alter the offset value, or if you'd like to automate an inner stroke or outer stroke, just pick-whip the offset amount to the stroke width, then, divide by 2, or -2.
An inner stroke would look something like this:

  • Sharing Numbers spreadsheet with others so they can make slight changes?

I created a Numbers spreadsheet and saved it to iCloud with a password. I want to share it with 2 other people and allow them to make simple changes to the spreadsheet.
    1. Do they need to log in to iCloud to make changes to the spreadsheet that I shared?
    2. How do they save their changes after making them? I just checked the link created when sharing the spreadsheet and I didn't see a save button in the browser.
    3. Which browsers will others be able to view/edit the spreadsheet in? Will it also work on PC?
    Thanks!

You can create a "master" path and then link all of the other paths to that one with an expression. You don't even need to write the expression yourself; you can just Alt-click the Mask Path property stopwatch for a child mask and drag the expression pick whip to the master Mask Path property. You can link the paths of shape layers the same way.

  • How to create a "next" button out of image

    Hi all.
I'm new to Dreamweaver and have no idea what I'm doing!  I'm a designer and not familiar with code.
I've managed to get this far: I've created a teamplate and am using it successfully on subsequent pages.  My snag is that I want to create a "next" button out of an image.
One forum poster suggested taking page_1.html and page_2.html and inserting a link between them. I get this, but in order to do so, it seems I have to detach my individual pages from the template in order to directly edit them.  Can I then somehow reattach them to the template so that I can continue to make other changes on one page that will update throughout?
Any suggestions to a VERY green newbie that does not include copying and pasting code?  Is there a way to do this in design mode?
    thanks
    B.

    UPDATE:
Nancy and Jon - and all future searchers with this question, I have found the answers!!!
    Here goes:
MAKING A SIMPLE NEXT/PREVIOUS BUTTON OUT OF AN IMAGE IN DREAMWEAVER FOR THE CODE-RETARED DESIGNER:
    - Create a template which includes buttons for NEXT/PREVIOUS. The buttons should be sliced from a Photoshop file, or created using Div tags in Dreamweaver (see Tutvid.com for these tutorials - very good). The buttons should also be in their own separate Divs.
    - Select the individual Divs containing the buttons (one at a time), not the images themselves.
    - Go to Insert>Template Objects>Editable Region.
    - Give one Editable region the name of NEXT and the other editable region the name of PREVIOUS.
    - Save template file.
    - Go to page_1.html and now those buttons are selectable.  Choose the NEXT button and go to the properties panel and grab the little pick whip icon which is right beside the Link box. Drag and hold the pick whip onto your files panel and select page_2.html.  Do the same for each page.  From page_2.html onward, you also do this for the PREVIOUS button, only you select the page that comes before it, not the one after it.
    Viola!
I really hope this helps out all you code-challenged designers like me!  I've searched everywhere and lo and behold, it was as simple as this.
Thanks to you, Nancy, for twigging me into selecting the Div and not the graphic itself.

  • Encore...things I'd like to see tweaked

Why do we like Encore? Primarily:
    Does Bu-ray
It’s an Adobe product (which we trust and usually intuitively understand)
It works well with other Adobe products
It’s menus are cleaner and far easier to alter & customize than DVDsp.
    But..
It disobeys several of the Adobe expected/intuitive operating principles found in other Adobe software:
doesn’t properly sort assets alphabetically ---and the way it sorts assets in the Project window is different from the Menu window
doesn’t automatically sort menu assets..you have to refresh the sort by clicking, for example, the name column twice
doesn’t allow to you to alter the name of an item by clicking, double-clicking or striking the return key while it’s selected  in a list — it must be altered in the Properties palette onl —which isn’t intuitive or flexible
doesn’t allow you to create a menu by right clicking on an asset and choosing "new menu"--- which it should then create using that asset
I could be wrong but asking it to replace or locate an asset doesn’t usually work for me if it’s missing the asset..you have to “revert to original” before replacing or locating it...not intuitive
duplicating a menu asset creates a new menu which it throws in a different part and illogical part of the list
closing timlines leaves behind multiple empty timeline tabs rather than closing the tab itself in favour of another “full” tab; Command-W does not close them—rather you have to click the tiny “x” to close each one.Annoying.
it’s progress bars aren’t indicative of what is going on...for example: it may be copying media from one folder to a new one while saving a copy of of project but to you it looks like it has hung up
it doesn’t process/transcode items in a logical order ..making it harder to determine when the transcoding will be done
it’s not intuitive to “revert to original” a clip before re-transcoding it..you should be able to transcode it again if you wish at any time
When custo, izing a transcode setting and saving it...it should make that new setting the selected one of choice when you exit the window...you can easily assume, incorrectly, it has done so for you.
it’s not intuitive to forbid you to transcode something before using it as an asset —you should be able to at least override that after a warning or by un-checking a preference selection
it doesn’t automatically re-adjust a duration of a menu item if you replace it’s assets with one of a different duration (or at least warn you that the duration has changed) -- the only way to have the menu item readjust its duration is to pick-whip a totally different item and then pick-whip the correct one...take loads of extra time and could create a lot of mistakes
it should allow you to group items into folders & subfolders in the menus palette
doesn’t permit you to have motion menus larger than 1 gig...we use DVDs for show reels which allow us to use quicktime movies to act as a kind of fully-customizable Powerpoint or Keynote format (clicking enter advances to the next menu/movie --works pretty well!) and the 1-Gig-max rule is a huge drawback
doesn’t offer an infinite hold at the end of a menu or timeline item
And the error you receive when you open a project and it tells you it’s can’t open it because it has  been created in a Windows program WHEN IT WASN’T is rather unforgiveable. That should have been corrected long ago and it keeps happening for no logical reason or without any apparent avoidable process
Disclaimer: if I'm wrong about anything & everything here..I'm thrilled to find out why and how to fix it.
All the above said..Adobe is my favourite company in the world.. they created "the standard" for good program design which is why I get frustrated when I see weird things in one app that don't exist at all in any of their others

Quite a list. Where to begin? I'll take a crack at it from the beginning...

The Project panel contains all the assets in the project: menus, timelines, slideshows, playlists, video/audio/still assets, etc.. You can sort by Name (alphabetically) and also by other properties of the assets such as Type, Duration, DVD Transcode Status, etc. by clicking the column headers to sort by the selected property. The Menus panel contains only menus, but you can also sort by Name, End Action, Aspect Ratio, etc.
Default behavior in the Project panel is to sort new objects in alphabetical order- if Name is the chosen sort method.

Not the only way. You can also right-click an asset and choose Rename, or choose Edit > Rename. But as you noted, Encore doesn't have inline editing for asset names.
    adobefishman wrote:

That might be a nice enhancement request, but there are limitations: a motion menu can have only a single video and audio track. What happens if multiples of each is selected and you choose "New Menu"? The current method (opt-drag video into the menu, or drag audio in the menu) replaces any previously selected assets. Encore also has default menus and buttons in the Library, which are user-settable that are used when you choose "New Menu" or "New Button". Would those be ignored when you choose "New Menu/Button" with an asset selected?
There are solutions to all of those problem, but they don't add much value to the user once the user understands how to create motion menus in Encore. And the current implementation hasn't prevented very many from creating motion menus.
Personally, I don't see a tremendous amount of value in adding this functionality, but I'm just a fellow user.
    adobefishman wrote:

You must mean in the Flowchart, right? There are two parts to the flowchart - the hierarchy of the disc (from First Play, to menus to buttons linked to timelines, etc.) and the orphanage, where unlinked assets go. If you duplicate a linked menu, where would you expect it to go? Since it's a new menu that's not linked to the disc hierarchy, it should go in the orphanage, yes? And then it can be linked.

Cmd-W works for me, as long as the timeline in the Timeline editor has focus. But it only closes the timeline, not the panel. There's a reason for this, though - if your settings are right, a single panel can hold multiple timelines, just as a single Menu editor panel can hold multiple menus. These are configurable in preferences. If you set your Timeline editor to a single panel containing multiple timelines, then Cmd-W closes the timelines without leaving the empty panel.

This blanket statement isn't universally true of all progress bars in Encore. Most times, progress bars are indicative of exactly what's going on.
    adobefishman wrote:

Have you looked at the Progress panel? You can see the order there. Personally, I don't do any transcoding at build time, so I don't care what order it's in but if you do, that's the place to check it. You can stop transcoding here as well.
I'm going to stop here for now, but I'll probably take up the rest later tonight or tomorrow.

  • Where is the Wish list for Encore 2?

    Hello
I have a few things that I would like to wish for in the next patch / version.
    1. The ability to import power point slide shows into encore as a slide show. This would make it really handy to import some ones previously created slide show and turn it into a DVD slide show. It doesn't have to do all the fancy animations or transitions, just import the slide shows. Yes I know I can export from power point to jpgs. Have you really looked at the results? Crap is all I have to say. Of course I could recreate them in Photoshop or some other program that lets picture and titling be created. You know how much extra time that step costs?
    2. Could you please put a tab in the project pane for a list of slide shows, play lists and assets? I actually like the tabs better than organizing by folders.
    3. Could you make a project manager for encore that is similar to the one in premier? I would like to be able to trim the project and remove "temporary files". I especially hate the number of temporary menus that accumulate in the menus folder. I want to be able to back up the necessary files only, not all the junk. it would also be nice if it would grab the video(I) that make up the project and compile them in to the folder that I designate as the new project folder, just like premier does.
    4. Can you make a key that would allow me to select multiple files when using the pick whip? Or could we just drag and drop files to a play list or to the box where the end action and such are? The pick whip looks cool, but it is so slow to get things done with it.
    5. its not really to hard to now, but it would be nice if there was some method for telling encore that you are creating an Easter egg. Currently there are a few steps to doing it and it is all manual. It would be nice if you could designate a button as being an Easter egg and then tell encore which choice of ways you want it to handle it. For instance is it just a simple Easter egg where you go on the right direction on a button and viola, you found it. Or is it a button that you go to and it goes to a duplicate menu and then you need to hit the right button a couple of times and then viola, you found it. Any thing to make my DVD creation to have a few less steps.
    6. Another thing that I think encore needs has to do with the flowchart. Give me some zoom on that baby. I like it, but it would be nice if I could zoom out to look at the overall structure.
    7. The ability to normalize the audio across the entire DVD. My wife made a disc and some parts were loud and others were so quiet. It would be nice to not have to do this for each clip before in premier, but leave it till the final stage of DVD production so that it only has to be done once.
As time goes on and I think of more I will add to this list. If you have an idea put it here, maybe it will end up in the next patch / version.

    > My wish is they get the bloody software to work properly in the first place. There are many inadequacies in the software that I would like to see added, but frankly, this is the WORST product I have ever seen Adobe relese. I cannot produce a single DVD project without it crashing, bugging out, and generally being a pain in the butt. If you see the forums on here, and across the net, you will see I am not the only person voicing this, and I have used $20 software that fares way better than this.
    Hmmm.
I think I will probably be wasting my time here, but things are not as bad as you are making out by a long, long way.
I have personally created many hundred successful DVD projects with Encore, and whilst I have indeed experienced difficulties from time to time, I can assure you the first - and only - time I went across to the Dark Side and used DVDSP, things were considerably worse. Never has Encore taken my Audio files, and muxed them almost to the end & then replaced the audio with complete digital silence! So before you seriously go elsewhere, I would take a long hard look at all the complaints in the Apple forums as well.
As I have pointed out far too many times, the grass may look greener.....but in my experience it seldom - if ever - is. There ois no such thing as bug free software, it's impossible to achieve.
    >but from what I can tell, Encore was a "bought in" product that they absorbed when taking over another company. It seems that maybe it wasn't such a good move after all.
It wasn't a move at all - EncoreDVD is
    i licensed
from Sonic Solutions, and Adobe have not bought Sonic Solutions.
    >My concern is that software companies should not release faulty software. With regard to my hardware, I am a professional graphic and video designer with two high end, quad core workstations that I rebuild with operating systems and upgrade new hardware regularly. They are not used for anything else besides professional software. All files are saved across to a server.
I can see one of the possible problems right away.
Quad core? AFAIK, these systems simply did not exist when Encore was coded. It's quite possible you have a hardware setup that is completely untested. I may be off the mark here though.
    >I am well aware that people use hardware and situations that the developers never envisaged, but that is what Beta testing is all about.
    Twaddle.
Beta testers simply have no chance of being able to test on every possible software/hardware combination. It's not reasonable to try & achieve this - the Beta cycles are (usually) all about making sure the software works properly on the largest number of systems that can be assembled. This is not going to stop people constantly attempting to install & run it on untested combinations though - and to be brutally blunt with you, no professional company would even consider being right on the bleeding edge of current technology without having an older system set up that actually conforms to the system requirements as laid out in the product documentation. For EncoreDVD 2, this is as follows:
Intel Pentium 4 1.4GHz for DV
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz or Dual Intel Xeon 2.8GHz for HDV
AMD must have SSE2 instruction sets.
There is no mention at all of Dual Core, or Quad Core CPU here - therefore this has to be considered as untested, and whilst it may work, it will not be guaranteed to work.
There is also NO mention of guaranteed functionality to a server. The specs actually say:
i Dedicated 7200 rpm drive for DV and HDV editing. Striped array (RAID 0) for HD
(This is my personal opinion, not official word from Adobe, I have to add. I do not work for Adobe in any way)
