Picking out Seagate Hardrive

So instead of getting another Toshiba which would be covered undery warranty I decided to go the safer route and get a different hardrive.
I narrowed it down to Seagate but I'm not sure what is more important, drive space or RPM?
I'm a college student, I want the best bang for my buck.
These are my choices
60 GB, 5400 RPM; $96
80 GB, 5400 RPM; $119
80 GB, 7200 RPM $168.95
100 GB 5400 RPM $150
Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Christina
Personally I think you can discount the 7200RPM drive unless you are a big user of things like image and video editing apps.
For me I think the 80GB 5400RPM is a very good compromise, but the 100GB is a useful alternative if your budget isn't too stretched.
Over time drive capacities never seem to be enough to store all our digital content. Therefore I tend to err on the side of capacity over speed - unless there is a definite need for the extra speed.

  • How to pick out the main body/article when surrounded by ads ?

    Hi all,
First of all, not exactly sure where I should post this, so please let me know a better forum if you know of one.
I am working with a linguisitic search engine that takes pdf articles and indexes them based on lists of keywords, and then does word counts. For this latest project the pdfs are downloads of newpaper articles, typically 1 to 2 pages long. My linguistic engine works on these fine but because these are downloads from the web, the pdfs have extraneous advertisements and links (and so on) surrounding the main article. This leads to false negatives and so I need to get rid of the things around the main body. If the articles were all written with the same format  (e.g. headline at the top and then some sort of copyright at the end) I 'd be able to focus the linguistics engine solely on the article. Unfortunately that is not the case. What I am considering now is some sort of pre-processing using some sort of pdf editor. From what I understand text in the pdf format is stored in elements which describe the layout. Typically, within an article the width of the actual article remains the same. The article typically spans a larger width than say something like an advertisement which contains a link and a description. Would it be possible to pick out the text elements based on something like width or font-type and then save just those portions to another pdf or text file? Can one do such things with Acrobat or the SDK? I'll have about 5-10,000 docs to work on. Thus I need an automated procedure. Going thru manually and copying&pasting the relevant portions will be too tedious. Thanks for any suggestions.

It's really hard to say what will be possible without the benefit of seeing a typical example. It's not generally true that "...text in the pdf format is stored in elements which describe the layout..." If the ads are in consistent locations (e.g., on the right 2 inches of the page), you can automate the redaction process using JavaScript.

I downloaded a ringtone ap, picked out my ringtones and sent them to myself, got them in itunes and then synced my iphone.  No new ringtones on my iphone.  It said to look in custom, I do not have that listed under ringtones in sounds.  What do I do or can I get different ringtones on my phone?

  • KeyFieldValue not picking out key

    I have a sender file adapter - I have a file with structure HEADER,1,DETAIL,*,TRAILER,1

When I pick out FILE_TYPE which is at the beginning of file and edit the file data to be A, B and C - it works ok
Is there a problem picking out a key in the middle of a file?????
(There are spaces before the key - but even when I replace them with characters like AA it still doesn't work.  Any ideas?????

You should have only one keyfield name, i.e keyfield name = RECTYPE.
    then:
    HEADER.fieldNames FILE_TYPE,FILE_NAME,FILLER1,RECTYPE,SEQNO,................
    HEADER.fieldFixedLengths 1,6,2,2,6,3,4,6,3,3,20,1,..............
    HEADER.keyFieldValue 01
    HEADER.fixedLengthTooShortHandling Ignore
    DETAIL.fieldNames FILE_TYPE,FILE_NAME,FILLER1,RECTYPE,SEQNO,FA..............
    DETAIL.fieldFixedLengths 1,6,2,2,6,3,4,6,3,3,20..............
    DETAIL.keyFieldValue 04
    DETAIL.fixedLengthTooShortHandling Ignore
    DETAIL.lastFieldsOptional yes
    TRAILER.fieldNames FILE_TYPE,FILE_NAME,FILLER1,RECTYPE,SEQNO,FACT..........
    TRAILER.fieldFixedLengths 1,6,2,2,6,3,4,6,3,3,............
    TRAILER.keyFieldValue 09
    TRAILER.fixedLengthTooShortHandling Ignore
The value for RECTYPE in your source file should be different for header, detail and tailer, i.e 'HEAD', 'DETAIL' and 'TAILER'

I know this email is confusing and really hard to understand...perhaps now you will know how i've been feeling--lost and confused with all the mis-information, with a hit and miss phone, and out of time with all the 1 1/2 hr to 2 hrs EACH wasted on this issue.
On top of all this, I can't even find out how to file a complaint with anyone higher up than Customer Service.
I hate to tell you this, but you didn't write an email. You wrote a discussion post on the Verizon Wireless Community forum which is a public peer to peer forum. Unfortunately since you didn't mark your post as a question, the VZW reps that roam this community won't ever see your post. Before you re-post it, don't. Duplicate posts get removed from the community.
I see there were several missteps both by the reps and yourself in your post. First you should have insisted on returning the phone within the 14 day return policy period. Second which Samsung Galaxy mini model did you purchase? The S3 mini or the S4 mini? Did you do any research prior to deciding on this device. The reps at that time deflected the easiest course of action, by trying to get you to replace the phone under insurance instead of returning the phone. The Early Edge payment option requires the current phone on the line using the early Edge must be returned to Verizon Wireless. Did you once considered going to a third party site like Swappa to purchase a gently used device for your daughter?

  • Help picking out an Amp

I just bought two of these subs, (Kicker - Comp 12" Single-Voice-Coil 4-Ohm Subwoofer) and i was just wondering if you could help me pick out an amp that you sell, i've been looking at a few, but i still don't understand them very well and would really enjoy some advice from someone with more experience than me. I just want an amp that will let these speakers perform as best as they can, i would prefer to stay in a price range up to $250-$300. thank you

No problem.  Those particular subs are rated @ 150W RMS and have a single 4 ohm voice coil.  That means that you are looking for either a 2 channel amp that is rated for at least 150W RMS per channel @ 4 ohm (most 2 channelaamps can't be bridged to 2 ohms) or a mono amp that is rated for at least 300W RMS @ 2ohm (2 ohm is what you get when you wire 2 of those subs in parallel) and I will break them down below.
    2 channel amps:
    Kenwood KAC-7205
    Power Acoustik
    Mono amps:
    Alpine MRP-M500
    Clarion XR2110
    Infinity REF1300A
    Kenwood KAC-8105D
Of all those amps, I only have experience with the Kenwoods and the Alpine so you might want to read the reviews and get the opinion of your local Autotechs to see what they think.  I personally would probably go with the Alpine and a parallel sub setup with the amp tuned down a little more than normal.

  • Need help picking out a printer...

I am trying to pick out a good printer. My laser (2600n) finally died. I'm looking for something with a low cost per page. I am in grad school and print out a lot of simple word docs, and class notes.
I'm not sure if any of the inkjets can give me a low cost per page. Any ideas on this? I don't need to do pictures and all of that, just allot of pages. Maybe around 500-1000 pages a month.

    Hi,
my hp photosmart C6180 all in one works flawlessly with it plugged in to my time capsule all functions.
I used to have it set up using it wirelessly from the printer however for some reason after a update (i think) it stopped working & would not print so had to plug in to time capsule.

  • Help picking out (my first) MBP

Happy Labor Day (to anyone in the US)! Happy Monday to everyone else
After 30+ years of PC use, I've decided to try out a Mac for my next computer, and I'm hoping to leverage the hive mind as a sounding board for my purchase. Beyond decent portability, my only other criteria is above average (but not super-high) gaming capability. In other words, SC2 running with at least medium quality and maybe some other games.
It's been quite a few years since I built my last computer, and I'm admittedly pretty out of touch. I've tried to get up speed by visiting the Apple retail store, searching the forum, and searching Google (http://guides.macrumors.com/Buyinga_MacBook_versus_MacBookPro was a pretty decent overview site), but I still have a few outstanding questions that I'm hoping you can help with:
    1) It seems that the i5 @ 2.4GHz is the sweet spot for me. i5 is enough of an upgrade from the Core 2 Duo that it's worth it, but the 2.5GHz isn't a significant enough upgrade for the $150 price increase. Does that sound right?
    2) If I'm wrong, and the Core 2 Duo is good enough, what would drive me to pick the MBP? It seems like the MBP offers the benefit of expandability, but at the cost of some (to me) unnecessary features (extra ports, lit keyboard, etc.)
    3) Is it just me, or is gaming on the 13" screen a little small? I've had 14"+ for my past few computers, so I'm hesitant to move down.
    4) If I had to choose, it's better to spend money on a SSD vs. a larger SATA drive, right?
    5) Is AppleCare worth it? I'd like to purchase a refurb in order to save some money, so I'm not sure if I should buy the support, even though I've always done my own tech-support in the past.
    I appreciate the help!

You're going to be hard pressed to get optimum performance out of Starcraft II on the 13" MBP at medium. Keep in mind that the 13" MBP has a shared GPU, versus the discrete GPU found in all the other MacBook Pros (15 & 17 models). While the 320M in the new 13" MBP is one of the better (if not the best) shared GPU I've encountered in portables, at the end of the day it's still a shared GPU. If gaming is a secondary purpose for this machine then I strongly recommend the 15" or greater for the performance factor alone.
    1) It seems that the i5 @ 2.4GHz is the sweet spot for me. i5 is enough of an upgrade from the Core 2 Duo that it's worth it, but the 2.5GHz isn't a significant enough upgrade for the $150 price increase. Does that sound right?
The 15" MBP doesn't come in a Core 2 Duo configuration anymore, unless you're comparing previous generation 15" MBPs on refurb to the current offering. The i5 CPUs are faster than the C2D CPUs anyway you slice it, whether it's day-to-day use or something more demanding like gaming or more robust program usage like Photoshop, etc. Also keep in mind that the Core 2 Duo is considered "old tech" and the only reason Apple went with it in the current 13" models is due to the fact that they couldn't fit a discrete GPU in the smaller form factor.
    2) If I'm wrong, and the Core 2 Duo is good enough, what would drive me to pick the MBP? It seems like the MBP offers the benefit of expandability, but at the cost of some (to me) unnecessary features (extra ports, lit keyboard, etc.)
    See above comment(s)
    3) Is it just me, or is gaming on the 13" screen a little small? I've had 14"+ for my past few computers, so I'm hesitant to move down.
I know of several people who went with the 13" for portability and when they're going to be stationary for a significant period of time (gaming) they hook up to an external monitor, one that is a whole lot bigger than a 15 or 17" screen. I've played Starcraft, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft, Age of Empires, The Sims 3, CS: Source and TF2 just fine on the machine. But the majority of my gaming with the 13" MacBook Pro is done connected to a 24" Cinema display.
    4) If I had to choose, it's better to spend money on a SSD vs. a larger SATA drive, right?
I personally can't justify the cost of an SSD, at any capacity. I've purchased MacBook Airs with SSD and while it's a nice "novelty" I've yet to really encounter an experience where the SSD was significantly better than my SATA drives. Sure, things load a bit quicker but for the price difference you can easily go to 8GB of RAM or get a really nice monitor.
    5) Is AppleCare worth it? I'd like to purchase a refurb in order to save some money, so I'm not sure if I should buy the support, even though I've always done my own tech-support in the past.
I suppose I should have read this paragraph first as I see when you were referring to the C2D that you were referring to the previous generation MacBook Pro versus the 13" vs. 15" models in regards to CPUs. AppleCare is definitely worth it from a hardware replacement cost perspective. If your machine is 14 months old and needs a new logic board, you can't replace it for less than the cost of AppleCare... even if you do the repair. I personally get AppleCare on all of my machines, but I always hold onto them for at least two years and in many cases until they no longer function (5+ years).

  • Seagate Hardrive replacement time?

What is the turnaround time for getting my hard drive replaced via the email I just got for the Seagate replacement program?

As BDAqua says, it may depend on where you are. If you have a choice of places to take it it might be worth phoning first to get a time estimate.
Where I live, I only had a realistic choice of one AASP and they quoted 2-5 days. Turned out taking 2 days - worst part was that they are 100kms away so it was a total of 400kms driving .

  • Seagate Hardrive compatibily

I would like to upgrade my laptop from my current 60 Gig hardrive to a 320 Gig Seagate ST903203N3 hard drive.  My system is a T43 - 2687DDU with Bios version 1.29  (1YET65WW) and Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8.  I would like to know if I will be able to boot-up without recieving that infamous compatibility message.
    Regards,
    Gary

First of all, the drive you're looking at is SATA and T43 requires PATA.
Secondly, ANY Seagate drive will trigger the error.
The only non-OEM drives that don't trigger the error are Fujitsus, available in 100, 120 and 160GB/5400rpm format.
    Hope this helps.

  • Picking out a Macbook Pro

Hello! I currently own a Macbook Air 1st Gen(2009) and the hard drive is going out soon, Im looking to pick a new Macbook Pro for Christmas! I mainly will use this laptop for recording HD gaming with my PVR and editing the clips in Imovie, watching HD movies, and heavy youtube/itunes/spotify usage. (My Air couldnt handle those tasks without overheating, Always had to have a cooling fan on it underneath) With that said....
I need some feedback from the apple community on which laptop would be good for preforming these tasks well. I have my eyes on these laptops, I want to know if the 15 inch is really a HUGE upgrade over the 13 inch or not that big a difference... I am looking at:
    this one :
    13-inch: 2.9GHz
    2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2
    or this one:
    15-inch: 2.3GHz
    2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
    4GB 1600MHz memory
    500GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2

Im not going to be playing games on the machine, but rather recording gameplay off my PS3 using an HD PVR and a program called EyeTV. I wont be playing any type of games on my machine at all. thanks for the reply though!
    Poikkeus wrote:
A huge difference - well that's subjective. But no, the difference between these two machines is relatively close; the main differences seem to be the 13" Turbo Boost to 3.6GHz against the 15" NVIDIA with 512MB GDDR5 memory. The very best way to compare the two systems would be back to back using similar games as a comparison.
Let's be honest: you're still going to have heat issues. And you're probably going to want to swap out the HD with an SSD, which would really give you some speed and reduce the temperature. But the difference between these two computers is incremental, and isolated to moments in specific games.

  • Need help picking out T500 configuration

    Here is my intro:
I am new to this forum,
    work in IT industry,
    currently own a T42,
    travel for work,
do NOT run any graphics intensive games,
do run multi-threaded applications, quite a many at the same time
seeking to buy a new T500
not really hands-on in terms of replacing components
do not change laptops every year or frequently
Planning to pick the below configuration for a T500:
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8800 (2.66GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2)
Operating system : 32 bit Windows XP Professional preinstalled through downgrade rights in Genuine Windows 7 Professional
Display type: 15.4" WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight
System graphics: Integrated Graphics, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator x4500HD with vPro
    Total memory: 4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
Hard Drive: 320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
Optical device : DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
Card Reader: 7 in 1 Media Card Reader
System expansion slots : Express Card Slot & Smart Card Reader
Wireless card: Intel WiFi Link 5100 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology
Mobile Broadband: Integrated Mobile Broadband upgradable
    Battery: 6 cell Li-Ion Battery
Country Pack: Country Pack North America with Line cord & 65W AC adapter
Language pack: Language Pack US English for Windows 7
I appreciate any tips from the fellow forum members in customizing my new T500 configuration.

do run multi-threaded applications, quite a many at the same time
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8800 (2.66GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2)
You might be happier with the T9600. The speed difference is negligable but the extra 3MB cache makes a fairly substantial difference where running multiple applications at once, and especially switching between them is concerned. - You could also wait until early January if you're not in a hurry, the T510 line should be coming out around then and will have the new Core i5 processors with hyperthreading, which will also help multiple muli-threaded applications. (Then again, you never know, T510 could be a step down.)
Also, do you use smart cards? Very rarely have I seen anyone with any real use for them, you might be better off with the PC card slot instead.
