Picking up user preferences upon startup

I made a change to my main user account home directory, and short name. All things are in sync, but my user preferences aren't being picked up. If I make a change to the preferences, they will stay in effect until next startup. I'm guessing the old user name, or folder name is stored somewhere, and needs to be changed to point to the new name.
Anyone know if this is accurate, and if so, where is this stored?

I had switched the Command & Control keys via the Modifier Keys dialog in System Preferences. I had switched them back to their normal default behavior just prior to making the username change. However, the Command & Control are flipped each time I restart the Mac, which requires resetting them via the Modifier Keys dialog in System Preferences.
That may be enough to answer your question, but in case it isn't, the following is background info:
I come from the PC world, and still need to work on PC's, so I have been remapping the Mac to make "flipping" back and forth between machines more reasonable. The original approach I used was similar to the one detailed at http://blog.mvballtech.com/2008/04/fixing-up-mac-key-bindings-for-windows.html
This approach makes use of switching the switching the Control and Command keys via Keyboard System Preferences. The only hitch, for me, comes when trying to learn Final Cut Studio where there is so much use of keyboard shortcuts. Having the Control and Command keys switched works, but having to be mindful when reading in the tutorials to use the Control key to think it's Command key in my case (or vice versa) distracts from what I'm trying to learn. Anyway, I chose a different approach to remap the keys, which requires defining more key-action pairs in DefaultKeyBinding.dict file.
I switched the Modifier Keys (Command & Control) back their defaults, modified DefaultKeyBinding.dict.
Again, to restate - the Command & Control keys worked as normal when I made the change, but whenever I restart the Mac, the Command & Control are flipped, requiring them to be reset.
This is the only thing I have seen to be an issue, to date, but is a bit of a nuisance, and indicates something isn't quite right.

  • User Preferences on Startup

I had a request from one of my users and I'm not sure if it can be done. It does not appear to be a preference available via GUI, but I thought I would ask here to see if there was another way.
Is it possible to have TNS pre-selected as the default connection type when a user instantiates a new connection?
    Thanks!

If there would be preferences at this level, they would get completely unmanageable, think about it (they're pretty clogged now already).
Nevertheless, it might be useful to get this by default (whenever tnsnames entries were found). You can request this at the SQL Developer Exchange, where others can vote to add weight for future implementation.

  • I still get a user listed upon startup, even when the user folder has been deleted.

I've deleted a user from the User Folder and I still have it showing up at Login ... have two other users listed ... but this deleted user still listed as a active account.  Anyone have a suggestion on a fix?

You need to remove the user from the Accounts Pane in System Preferences.
Unlock the Pane, select the user and click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the pane.

  • How do I get all users to show on screen upon startup for login?

New MacBook Pro with latest IOS. Yosemite10.10
I got my first MacBook Pro out of the box from the Apple store yesterday...Logged in as an initial admin user...Then I migrated my MacBook Air to it. All three imported users showed. Success!! Then I restarted the MacBook Pro and the startup screen shows only a single login option: The initial admin user login Icon and name that I used on the MacBook Pro just before migrating the other users in from my MacBook Air.
So, I deleted the initial user (I did not need it), so that the other users (already with admin rights) would be the only logical logins that should show upon restart.
Result: The initial "deleted" user shows still, all alone and none of the other users.  So I now log in to this "deleted" user, it is very slow to start before the other logins eventually appear after the this delay.
How do I get my users to show at the login screen upon startup and restart?

Go to Settings > General > Date & Time. Make sure your time zone is correct and turn on Set Automatically if it isn't on already.

  • Problem #2 Upon startup get flashing Google map icon then ? finally starts

In further review and work towards external hard drive (startup disc) near full,
I have encounterd upon startup a flashing icon which I believe is google world or map icon. This flashes for about 30 seconds, and then turns into a flashing ?? with a Mac type face/file. The google map or world app does not appear to be anywhere that I can find on the computer. Any advice on how to make right?
Also how can users download stuff like this without admin privileges.
    Thanks Jim Svarz

    Hi Again Jim Svarz!
In System Preferences > Startup Disks, what should be selected is Mac OS X 10.3.7 on Macintosh HD.
If that corrects the issue, what you were seeing wasn't a symptom of something that was downloaded. The system was just searching for a drive to start up from.

  • User Preferences not saved in 10.6.8

I have a Mac Book Pro running 10.6.8. Somewhere along the way something got messed up in the permissions (I assume) and none of the user preferences are saved i.e. items added to the toolbar in Safari, iTunes account log in, prefered browser, browser window size and position, etc.
I have run Disk Utility a number of times, and every time it "repairs" dozens of permissions, and when I run it again, it repairs the same ones (pretty sure anyway) definitely dozens of repairs everytime, no matter how many times I repair.
I did a user migration to a clean install, no help, all the old problems came with the migration. I have reinstalled the OS twice since then. Hoping I won't have to wipe the drive and start from scratch.
    Thanks, T Bruce

First off, Permissions repair won't touch anything in your user. Stop repairing Permissions. Generally a waste of time anyway.
Do a GetInfo (Cmd-I) on the Preferences folder in your user (home folder) Library. What does it say for Sharing and Permissions?
It should show that you, your user, has Read and Write and everyone No Access.
I would suggest using the following procedure to reset your home folder Permissions, which may fix this problem.
Boot from the Mac OS X Install Disc:
    Insert the disc.
    Shut down the computer.
Turn it on again whilst holding down the C key.
You can let go when you see a spinning dial.
Click through the menus until you after you’ve accepted a license agreement.
Snow Leopard: At the top, click Utilities -> Reset Password.
Lion: At the top, click Utilities -> Terminal. Type resetpassword in the Terminal and press Enter.
Click on your main hard drive.
In the dropdown box under “Select the user account” make sure to select your username.
Underneath where it says “Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs”, click the Reset button.
Press cmd + Q to Quit the Reset Password application. Press it again if you have a Terminal open.
Click Mac OS X Installer in the top left and click Quit Mac OS X Installer.
    Click the Startup Disk button.
Click on your main hard drive and click the Restart button.

  • Magic Trackpad Flashes "Low Battery" Upon Startup but is 100%

Since I got the Magic Trackpad, every time I start up my iMac, it flashes "Low Battery" on the screen for the Trackpad, even though it is 100% with new batteries when I go into System Preferences.
Spoke to Apple about it, and they had me trash two files and then re-start again. It still happened. Then they told me to go to an Apple Store and swap out the Magic Trackpad. I did this. The "Low Battery" indicator still flashes on the screen upon startup. Otherwise, the iMac works fine. Any ideas?

I finally figured out that my "Keyboard" batteries were low, and I replaced them, and now the "Low Battery" for the Trackpad no longer flashes on the screen. However, when I re-connected the Keyboard after putting in the new batteries, it showed a flash on the screen that the "Trackpad" was now connected. Why is my iMac mistaking my Trackpad for my Keyboard?

  • HT1529 Upon startup my iMac has a popup that says: "talagent wants to use the local items keychain."  New to me--can't get anywhere.  How do I get out of this and get things up and running again?

Upon startup my iMac (OSX Mavericks) has a popup (that I can't get rid of!) that says: "talagent wants to use the local items keychain."  I never set this up, don't want it, and want my iMac to start up with my desktop in place and ready to work.  I'd appreciate some help please.  How do I get rid of this?  Thanks.
    Larry

I found this and it fixed my issue..
I was suffering with this same problem, I followed these steps and everything returned to normality:
1.- I opened KeyChain app and run the FirstAid (from the KeyChain app Menu)with my user Password (this do work) because the problem is not with your password. If there is any trouble with your keychain file this will fix it.
2.- Opened Disk Aid and run Fix Persmissions just in case there was left some wrong file permissions during the upgrade.
3.- Went back to the Key Chain App and Locked and Unlocked the Keychain using the Lock in the top left corner of the app. When asked for my password I simply typed my User password.
After this everything worked fine. These are the steps that I followed but I really think that #3 did the trick here. You could try to do only #3 directly and it might fix your problem, but fixing the Keychain and fixing OS permissions is never a bad Idea.
    Good Luck friends.

  • Airport connect upon startup

I have a Belkin FSD7010 wireless card in the PC slot.
It is recognized as an airport extreme card.
    Running Tiger 10.4
    TiBook 1 GHz,
    Airport Express wireless
    Everything works great except -
whether I set the TiBook to join a preferred network, or automatically join any network
after turning on the TiBook I always have to choose the network from the icon on the menu bar. It never grabs the wireless connection by itself.
Is there some setting that I am missing for the TiBook?
My Macbook Pro gets on by itself upon startup.

    -Open System Preferences
    -Network
    -By Show: select Airport
-By Default, join: select Preferred networks
-Select here the network you like
    -Apply now
Sometime's you need to do this for automatically connecting to a wireless network.

  • TS3680 Getting grey Apple logo and progress circle upon startup after removing "Everyone" as rights to Local HD

Hello, I am having trouble starting my 21" iMac running Snow Leopard after I had shared the HD with my MB-Pro. I had removed the "everyone - Read Only" rights on the HD (on the iMac) and opened sharing so my MB could attach to it. Grey Apple Logo and progress circle upon startup now.
Can changing these rights cause the system to not boot? I can go into single user mode but I am not sure what to do then. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • Setting up user preferences in web analysis

From an admin perspective does anybody know how to setup preferences for a user/group in WA? I want to establish the users prefs, not them. Ideally, I would like to setup a group/shared preference and then put users in that group/share and have the user preferences point to the group/share preferences. As an admin i can repoint the user prefs to the group/share prefs. I did this in the web analyzer 7.2 but i don't know how to do this in system 9. I'm guessing i would do this in Shared Services??

    FYI...
I am getting closer with this one. Shared services is the key. I set the startup page for WA in SS under projects. Users are seeing the WA document but i need for them to repoint their preferences to a shared preference under <Profiles>. My problem is the users don't see the shared pref file under the <Profiles> folder. As an admin I see the file. I suspect it has to do with SS provisioning but based on the provisioning for the users i thought they would see the shared pref file. Does anybody have any knowledge on pushing out shared preferences to users?

  • User preference color bit depth overridden by prores HQ?

Hi there, any help much appreciated...
If you have your user preference color bit depth set to 8-bit, but render out to ProRes 422 (HQ) - does the codec's bit depth override that setting? Is the footage automatically rendered to at the codec's bit-depth?
And what bit depths does that codec support? There's no dialog drop-downs on the render codec settings to select a particular bit-depth... Which would suggest that this option is set in that user preference panel. However in my user preference panel, only 8bit and Floating are available as selectable options - 10, 12 and 16 are grayed out.
The reason I ask is this - I had the user preference bit depth set to 8 when I rendered out all my footage... Whereas I had I checked this option I would have preferred a higher setting. I'm on a deadline and don't have time to re-render everything... The film is heavily desaturated, so I'm not too concerned about banding - If I'm not mistaken, 8-bit color depth should be sufficient to prevent this in mostly gray images?

There are two settings that are mutually exclusive: Output codec & Render Bit Depth.
Color will render at whatever bit depth you select. Your available bit depths for rendering is determined by your graphics card.
The export codec bit depth is how the resultant image gets written out to disk. If you pick Uncomressed 8bit, then that float image will get rounded down to 8bit.
ProRes is interesting. From some previous testing I've done this is what I've found (and if I'm wrong, please speak up): If you select ProResHQ (and I don't see any reason to ever pick ProResSQ) if Color is rendering at 10bit or better, ProRes will write out a 10bit file (which can be confirmed in FCP by viewing the footage properties - Command+9). If you have Color set to process at 8bit, then ProRes will write out an 8bit file.

More bits = more subtle gradiations without banding. Saturated or not. Remember, the difference between 8bit and 10bit is 256 shades of gray compared to 1024 shades of gray.
My general preference, render in float & write out at 10bit.

  • User preference selection not responding

Hi- this is seemingly very simple.
I like to have my last project open upon application launch so I check the box in the general tab of user preference (open last project on application launch) Simple enough right? I consistently get a new untitled project when I launch FCP.
I must have something switched on or off, checked or not checked etc.... that is overriding this selection.
Any ideas I'm stumped. Thank you in advance

First, trash your preferences and repair permissions.
Maybe there's something weird in where you're saving the project.
