Pics have gone, though albums are there.

Like several other posts, my pics in iPhoto have disappeared - there are only 78 pics from 3 years ago (as opposed to the 5000 or so that should be).
It may be coincidence, but this did all seem to occur after upgrading to Leopard. Incidentally, a similar thing happened with iTunes, though was able to use a previous library file to get the music and playlists back.
I'm assuming this must be from a damaged database (though I hadn't interfered with it at all). Similar to others, the pics are all still in the library and can be opened in Finder.
One difference is that all my album folders are still there, just now they're empty. In addition, iPhoto is having trouble importing new photos that are perfectly fine in Finder: unreadable file error comes up.
Have tried the other suggestions: rebuilding and using a backup Library.iphoto file but still no luck. I haven't tried iPhoto Library Manager yet as I want to keep the albums that I have - will this erase them? And I doubt this would solve the unreadable file errors. Perhaps I simply need to upgrade to 08.
Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
If the albums are saveable, then iPhoto Library Manager will save them.
Otherwise see this article

for details on recovering the situation.

I have purchases the OS X Mountain Lion on Apr 7  and it keep telling me to download I have gone though this 5 time. That i'm i doing wrong. it say it is installed But when i go to back to where my apps are it say to download and that is the only one that as it on there..Can you help..

The Mt Lion installer deletes itself from your Apps folder when it has finished the installation. It is available to download again should you ever need it, such as to install on one of your other qualifying Macs. You don't have to continue to download it and install, it's installed.
Is there something else going on?

  • I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. What can I do?

I made a movie in iMovie then deleted the clips in it. I have reimported the clips in an event with the same name as previously and some clips in the movie are still saying source slip missing even though they are there. Some clips are fine in the movie, but most are just black and when I hover over them, it says source clip missing. How to I fix this? Thank You

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos.  I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

I would like to view my old playlists & add new music on them. I keep my phone pretty organised & now to not see the music & playlists I already have on there on itunes is irritating me.

  • Photos deleted a ton of photos (several events/categories/albums in iPhoto). I have backups on Time Machine but I can't go back further than the date I installed Photos, even though backups are there. Anyone have any ideas?

I have been looking forward to an improvement to iPhoto but have found Photos to be worse than useless, unfortunately. It uses all my resources, crashes and freezes constantly. Not only that, the events/albums/categories I have spent countless hours sorting have been completely eliminated. Without this, the app is of no use to me. So, fine, I'll revert to iPhoto, but a ton of my photos are now missing. It shouldn't be a big deal, because I use Time Machine regularly, but Time Machine won't let me restore any time past the date I installed the OS update (the backups are there). Any suggestions?

Your Time Machine backup lets you go back to directly the moment after you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3?  There must have been some interval between the upgrade and the first launch of Photos.
Try, if you can see the original iPhoto Library in the first backup.  Directly after the migration it will have a filename extension ".migratedphotolibrary", but this library should still work with iPhoto, nothing changed but the extension.

  • Updated to 10.4.1 and can't see the menu titles or the song names, even though they are there and can be played. the other categories (tv, apps, etc) seem to be OK.

i just upgraded my pc to windows 7 and itunes to 10.4.1, but i can't see the menu items at the top left of itunes.  they are there, because if i move my mouse over the area where they should be, i see and can select from the drop down menus.  this problem also affects my music library; i cannot see the individual song names/artists/etc, but if i double click on the blank line it does play the song.  the app library and video library seem OK, only the music library is a problem.  also, when i connect my iphone, it recognizes it, but the main screen for my device has no words on it, just a picture of the phone.

Hi, Sanjiv - My son fixed this problem for me by showing me that in addition to the visible volume slider at the top left of the iTunes window you also need to pull down the blue airplay menu right alongside that volume slider (the little blue box with the triangle). When you pull down that menu you will see volume settings for "computer" which controls the built-in speakers, plus a list of the other external speakers you may have set up using Airport. When I did that I saw that the volume on "computer" was right down at zero levl even though the main iTunes slider was at full level. When I selected the "computer" under "single" or "multiple" options and adjusted the volume it came back up. It worked for me, I hope it solves your issue too. Best, John.

  • No photos  - albums are there - but rebuild and update thumbs no result.

My machine crashed the other day while iPhoto was active. On reboot iPhoto shows no photos. Unfortunately i had just done a backup and the backup folder is doing the same thing so that route is not a possibility. I have tried all the "normal" stuff, - rebuild thumbs, rebuild database, etc and nothing seems to help. The original are there so I did an import of originals into the "main" library - all of them came across as rolls, some of them named as i had done originally but none are allocated to albums. There are 5500 photos so redoing all of this will be a major task. Is there any way of getting the structure back. I am assuming that this has something to do with the XML file being corrupted.

    Richard
It does sound like a corrupted database. And given that you've tried all the usual fixes, I can only suggest one more: Try rebuilding using iPhoto Library Manager. You may have more luck.
If that doesn't work, then I'm afraid your only option is to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

ps the key file is the library6.iphoto file. That's the actual database. The AlbumData.xml file is what's read by other apps that integrate with iPhoto.

  • I've opened itunes and none of my songs or albums are there in my library.  I'm afraid to plug in my ipod cause i may lose all my music.

I've lost everything in my itunes library.  No of my albums i've purchased over the years are there.  I'm afraid to plug in my ipod cause I could lose all my songs on it?  Very frustrated and I don't know what happened to my itunes Library??  Help?

Ok, so, what I had done before I saw your response is follow the prompts to activate "match" on this computer... So when I restarted my computer just now, I see a copy of what is on my iphone, which brings up another question that has had me confused for so long..  Between the cloud and match, shouldnt whatever I have on my computer be automatically put onto my iphone?  As this does not happen.  I think you have to attach the iphone to the computer in order to update, but whenever I do that, it doesnt do this. So, I dont have anything I did for bascially all of 2013 which is a lot... I never worried too much about it as I listen to most of my music from the computer and from my ipod, and dont worry about the music on my iphone. But I am so confused about how to reconcile all my songs, albums, playlists on all my devices..
Another thing that seems to be the root of all things annoying is regarding my apple id.. When I first chose my user name back in the day, it was simple.. You chose what you wanted.. Recently, when I wanted to try to get into this "cloud" thing, I was asked to choose another apple id that was in the format of an e-mail address.  Which has caused so much confusion for me of which I can not figure out.. I have things purchased on both accounts and just wish I could have all my purchases together on all my devices..
I have not tried your suggestion yet, but will, if that is still your suggestion after all this additional information..
Thank you in advance for all your help...

  • HT4623 i have gone into settings but there is no option in general to update software

i have gone into my settings on my iphone 4 but there is no option in general to update software how do i do it plz help ??????

That option is only available after upgrading to iOS 5 or higher. Prior to that you will need to connect to your syncing computer and use iTunes.

  • Songs are not showing up in playlists even though they are there

songs are not showing up in playlists even though they are there

If you've downloaded them on the iPad then they should be in the Videos app - iTunes on the iPad is just the iTunes store (the Purchased tab shows what content that you can re-download from the store and rentals can't be re-downloaded, and non-rental films can only be re-downloaded in some countries).

  • Photos are not showing anymore in Photo Stream folder even though they are there.

A couple of days ago my Photo Stream folder in iPhoto was suddenly empty. I checked and Photo Stream is switched on. I disabled it and switched it back on. Now You can see that Photo Stream is importing the images but when iPhoto is done, there are no photos in the folder. When taking a pic with my Mac it uploads as well into Photo Stream and shows up on my iPhone but in iPhoto Photo Stream still nothing.
I tried manually adding pics but it tells me they are already there. Very strange.
I also know that Photo Stream itself is working because it works to use Photo Stream as a screen saver and there all the pics show. So it must be a problem with iPhoto. I also did all the repair options for the Media Library that you can do when starting iPhoto. Nothing has changed the situation.
    Anyone any suggestions?

Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane
and in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane.
Reboot and reenable both respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

  • All my photos have gone from iPhoto is there any way i can recover them?

I turned my laptop on and when i opened iphoto it asked me to create a new library as there was no existing one, therefore all my photos have disappeared. There are no photos in the trash and my laptop is a macbook pro and it's not old. Please help i had a lot of important photos!
    Thank you

Download and run  Find Any File  to search for a file named "Library6.iPhoto".  There's one in every iPhoto library.  FAF can search areas that Spotligh can't, like invisible or system folders.  If there's a second iPhoto Library on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Captions Not Showing in List View Though They are There

Ever since I've been using Aperture I've had issues with Captions not showing in List View. The caption is there and shows in the Info Panel but does not show in the List View. I close Aperture, reopen, and it appears in List View. Frustrating when trying to caption thousands of images. You think the image has no caption and when you add a caption it doubles up on what is already there, but could not been seen, and a mess is born. Any one else have this issue? I see it in every Library I create whether on my field laptop or my main desktop Library. Screen shot attached of caption showing in Info pane but not in list view.

Happens all the time. The problem has been there for as long as I can remember, and shows itself in Keywords as well as Captions, maybe others. And yes, it is a major annoyance, and it is a bug IMO. You've found the same workaround I have, namely to restart Aperture.
If you haven't already done so, submit a bug report using Aperture Feedback to add your voice to the list.

  • TS1314 how do i find the photo cache synced my dads phone on my laptop and now his pics have gone help

im wondering if there is some way i can get them back help thanks

    Syncing does not backup photos.
Backing up only backs up the photos taken with the device but is not a solution to maintaining you precious photos.
It is the user's responsibility to copy the photos taken with the device off the device to the computer.  Same goes for videos taken with the device.
Media on the device has never been included in a backup.
Sorry, but if you've lost the device (or it's been stolen) and you've failed to manage your data on the device, it is gone.

  • When I try to sync my iPhone with my library it says no songs can be found in library even though they are there?

    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks

The new iTunes has a somewhat different look from the previous version.  You can get the old look back if you prefer it by doing View > Show Sidebar in iTunes.  Or you can adapt to the new look.
