PICT file problems

Hi,
I recently upgraded to Appleworks 6 from Clarisworks 4. I used to used PICT files from Clarisworks and they'd print crystal clear. Now when I try, they look like a copy of a copy of a copy... The quality is grainy, and all of the text is blurred. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it with no luck. TIFF's give me the same result. I need to use these files, and I need them to be clear.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

Welcome to Apple Discussions Jeff
I'm assuming you're using AppleWorks 6.2.9. A number of users have experienced problems printing JPEGs in 6.2.9 & I guess the problem can occur with PICT & TIFF as well. The "fix" is to turn Fractional Character Widths on in Preferences > General > Topic: Text. This is an old trick that hadn't been needed in some time. It apparently has something to do with postscript printing.

  • Problem exporting as a Pict file in CS5

I need to export a file in Pict file mode and I know Photoshop CS5 discontinued that format. Does anybody knows what could be a good replacement. I need to import the Pict file in DVD Studio Pro to use as an overlay for a menu. Thank you!!

Are you certain of this need? I don't remember ever using PICT in any Final Cut Studio app. PICT is sooo last century.
There's a long list of available formats:

I've always had success with PSD without any live layer effects.

  • Problems with old Pict files

help, my old pict files are not recognized bij Preview or Quick Time. They are now only Quick-Draw files but can not open them

That file does not contain any picture that I can see. In Snow Leopard, GraphicConverter (6.7.4) opens the file as an image, but the image is merely 244x88 pixels of blank white space. QuickTime Player 7 also renders the file as white space.
MacLinkPlus Deluxe (an old conversion application) recognizes the file as a PICT graphic and translates it, but, again, it's just 244x88 pixels of white space.
At the hex level, 0xED reveals that the file was produced by SoftShell Int'l Ltd. A bit of web-searching leads to the ChemIntosh application presumably used to create the file and the current corporate owner of ChemIntosh/ChemWindow, Bio-Rad, http://www.bio-rad.com/en-us/product/spectroscopy-software/chemwindow-software?p cp_loc=catprod.
But that file you posted is very small--only 3396 bytes. In fact, it's so small that at first I suspected it to be an alias to a file rather than the file itself. However, GC, QT, and MLPD all open the file as an image, even though that image seems to contain no actual picture. Do you have anything larger to test?

  • QuickTime on Windows Mac PICT File Text display doesn't work

There is a problem in QuickTime for Windows, which was there with version 6, and still exists in version 7. I have a Macintosh format PICT file, generated in Illustrator, that contains text and graphics. The text is in Arial font of a particular size. Viewing this PICT file on Windows within the QuickTime Player AND the QuickTime PictViewer, the font is scaled far larger than it is in the Mac version, to the point of going way outside a rectangle drawn around the text.
When this same PICT file is imported into Excel or Word on Windows, the text aligns and displays correctly, and at the correct size.
I am a software developer, and I have run PICTS through Quicktime programmatically, and there seems to be a real problem with text handling.
Anyone else seen this? Any ideas?

Let me also clarify this by saying that the font I am using exists both on Windows and Mac platforms.

  • Mixing layered Photoshop files with PICT files

Hoo boy...this one has me scratchin' my head...
The facts: FCP 5.1.4, OS 10.4.11, QT 7.4.1 Photoshop CS3...
Here's the problem: I've imported a layered PS file and animated it. However, as you may have noticed, when you apply a blur to a PS layer in FCP, the blur is cropped at the "bounding box". So in order to get around this, I saved out the layers I want to blur as PICT files with alphas. Same position, same size image field, no changes whatsoever...
...however, when I place the PICT file in the sequence with the rest of the Photoshop layers, it just causes all sorts of odd behavior. Unrendered layers jump around out of position, making it impossible to park the playhead and line things up. When I render the sequence, the PICT files, which look like they're positioned correctly, all of a sudden aren't. When I adjust the PICT layers by one unit, and re-render, now they're way out of position in the opposite direction.
I've tossed prefs, made sure that the PS file and the PICT files are the same field size...I'm confused. Anybody ever observed this wierd behavior? Or have republican stooges invaded my CPU?

Don't use .pict files in FCP. This is bad.
Save them as TIFF or PNG and use those instead. If you got them from someone else, have them send you new ones in either of the above formats.
Or have republican stooges invaded my CPU?
    They did that years ago

  • Applescript:: PICT File Compression doesn't work [?]

I have tried many options for getting Pict file compression to work via scripting but to no avail. Can anyone confirm if this works in PS CS4?
    PICT file options I am trying to get to work are:  {class:PICT file save options, compression:maximum quality JPEG, embed color profile:false, resolution:thirty two, save alpha channels:false}
All option **except compression seem to work.. :/
    Example code:
set newPictFilePath to ((path to desktop folder) & "newPictFile.pct") as string
    tell application "Adobe Photoshop CS4"
    set docRef to current document
    set photoshopSaveFormat to PICT file
    set photoshopSaveOptions to {class:PICT file save options, compression:maximum quality JPEG, embed color profile:false, resolution:thirty two, save alpha channels:false}
set kSavedDocument to save docRef in file newPictFilePath as photoshopSaveFormat with options photoshopSaveOptions appending no extension with copying
    end tell

    Hello,
I did not have any problems with the script you posted, but I ran into issues when my document was not flattened, or was not RGB. After I added that to the script, everything seemed to work.
I also have a habit of telling a document to save instead telling the app to save a document, but that might just be my quirk.

  • Read baseline of PICT file

    Hi,
We are doing math project. we extract the equation using mathtype, and export the equation as PICT file format. We successfully imported the equation into indesign. But the problem is the equation not aligned properly. i check the previous threads, in eps file they are given baseline information of the file but where as in pict file format i didn't find that so i can't align the equation.
can anyone help me how to get the baseline information from PICT file format.
Note: Previously we used eps file but, when we import into indesign some of the symbols (greek variables varphi, mu) are missing. So we import the equation into pict file format these symbols are available in indesign.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Parthiban

    Hi All,
    Any Solution for this?

  • PICT file (transparent background) - motion (from off screen left to right)

I have a PICT file with a transparent background. I imported it and put it in a track above a photo. Basically I just want to to go from off screen left to off screen right. I tried selecting the pict image, going to the motion tab and using keyframes in the ‘centre’ option to move the image off to the sides. The problem is that when I view it, its almost like every second/third line of pixels lags (Making the edges jagged).
The edges of the image are fine when there is no motion, and it seems to get worse the more distance it is traveling.
The only thing I have changed is the 'quick time video settings compressor'; it is ‘none’ because that is the only way I could find that wouldn’t end up messing up the sides of the image when I imported it.
I have been using final cut for about 3 hours? So I am not sure what to do, or if I am even approaching this problem the right way. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I am currently trying to find a way to get a screen shot, but can’t get it to paste into any programs I have….

Edit: this happens when ever I do any scaling/movement/rotation/etc...
Here is an example of what I mean:

  • Viewing .pct / .pict files in Bridge CS3

Hello there, I'd like to view .pct / .pict files in Bridge, but I am not getting any previews. I've tried to find a topic about this but haven't had any luck. Does anybody know a way to view them... a plug- in maybe. Or is that going to be the 'way it is'?
Actually just jumped on a MAC and pct files do preview, but no luck on any of the Windows machines.
    Thanks a million!

That IS odd. I saved a file from Photoshop as a 32-bit .pct and I can
confirm that Bridge (on Windows) does not preview or thumbnail it. On the
other hand, I can't find any other program, free or pay, that fails to view
the file, so it obviously presents no technical difficulties...

  • DW CS5 Missing Related Files Problem

    Hello
Hoping somebody may be able to help me with a missing related files problem in CS5. I've tried Adobe phone support but they couldn't solve the problem.
*Some* of my sites (but not all) are not showing all the files related to that page. My pages are typically in .asp vb server model and contain .asp virtual includes (header, nav etc) plus .js and .css linked files
However DW is only showing the .asp includes as related files and not css or js ones. In design view the CSS is displaying correctly, and all styles appear in the CSS inspector but not showing as a related file in the bar. In CS4 it works fine.
I've tried deleting the site and recreating it, copying the files to a new folder and setting up a fresh site, creating a new folder and downloading all files from the remote server but no joy. I've also tried refreshing related files. if I click on the filter in the bar it only shows the asp includes and nothing else.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated, this is a great feature when it works
    Cheers

    UPDATE:
Managed to solve this problem, this is a new issue to DW CS5, previous versions do not seem to exhibit this problem
It occurs when you use site root rather than document relative paths for js/css etc files AND don't have the remote site url (web url) specified in the site setup | local info dialog, or do not have it fully qualified with http://
ie. ../js/file.js works fine without a remote web url but /js/file.js does not show the related file in the bar unless a remote url is defined.
Hope that helps anyone else that encounters the same issue!

  • With conversion to Leopard, file problems with networked Windows computer

Last night I did an Archive & Install from Tiger to Leopard on my Intel MacBook Pro. Today, I had trouble finding the other computers at my office. Once I finally got them to show up, I opened a Word file found on another computer, made some changes, and when I tried to save it, I got this message: "This is not a valid file name. Try one or more of the following: *Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly. *Select a file from the list of files and folders." Since this file already existed and I wasn't changing the name, I thought this was odd, but I changed the name from "Seating Chart 3-8-08" to "SeatingChart3-8-08" in case Leopard didn't like spaces when talking to Windows, but I got the same error message. Finally I gave up, not knowing what to do, then discovered that it had in fact saved my file. Still, every time I try to save ANY Word document from the shared folder of the Windows computer, I get the same error message endlessly until I choose "Don't Save."
When I try to open an Excel file from that computer, it won't even open; it says " 'File Name.xls' cannot be accessed. This file may be Read-Only, or you may be trying to access a Read-Only location. Or, the server the document is stored on may not be responding." As with the Word file problem above, I did not have any problem accessing the files until I converted to Leopard.
The Windows machine is Windows XP using Microsoft Office 2003; I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my machine.

  • Installed SL, now Preview won't open my .PICT files

I use .pict files for photos in my QuarkXpress layouts. Preview doesn't recognize them, now that I've installed 10.6 SL. I got a window suggesting that I check the"Opne in 32-bit mode" but that didn't help. Help! I'm up against publication deadlines every day!

Because the new Preview in 64-bit just won't handle that very very old file format. But it will in 32-bit mode. I don't know enough about programming to even guess why. If you still get the message, then you did not get Preview to open in 32-bit mode.
    1. Quit Preview, go to your Applications folder, select Preview, do Command-i to bring up GetInfo, and check the box for 32-bit
    2. Try launching Preview by double-click on its icon in Applications and try to open a pict file
    3. If you get the warning message, quit Preview, and relaunch it again from the Application folder--it took me two tries to get to actually run in 32-bit mode
You will then be able to work with the pict files. Oh, and it doesn't matter in the slightest if you saved the files with Preview as the default. You can open them with anything that can open a pict file, regardless of the default application. You can even change the default using GetInfo if you find something that works better--just select the program you want in the "Open with" section of GetInfo for one of the files, then click the "Change All" button.

  • Anyone know if the long standing duplicate files problem with File History has been fixed yet?

There are loads of public threads about the duplicate files problem
with Windows 8/8.1 File History backup system.
From all the threads I've looked at, there seems to be no solution,
and no acknowledgement from MS that they can even repro the problem
(which surprises me considerably as there are so many people who
    notice the problem).
Is anyone aware of whether MS (may) have fixed this for Win10?
Are MS aware of the problem and if they're able to fix it?
Dave - with many GB of duplicated files in File History :)

Hmm, is that the attitude MS would recommend? :)
Why would I care what Microsoft would recommend?
Clearly you don't, and you appear to have missed my smiley. Calm down
Noel, many of us are as annoyed by aspects of modern Windows as you
    are. :)
I'm all about making Windows actually WORK/./
Aren't we all? Windows is software I use too many hours every day, I
along with many millions of others need it to work really well. You
    are not alone.
When they implement something that doesn't work, and even if it did work doesn't do what's needed - and/beyond that/ they remove features people DO need (such as the GUI for Windows Backup), I see no wrong in advising people of the way things
    really are.
File History essentially does work - it's saved me a couple of times
in the past couple of weeks. It just has a highly annoying habit of
creating 100% duplicates of some files for no apparent reason. If MS
have fixed that I won't have any known complaints about it.
If you don't like it, you don't have to use it. I generally like it, I
just want to see that its fixed.

If Not Do The Following Steps:

      >>      Give Your Existing Idoc Number.
    <u><b>Step 2:</b></u>
      >>      Basic Type is Your Message type.
            Ex: MATMAS05 or CREMAS05.
    <u><b>Step 3:</b></u>
      >>      In Your Existing MATMAS05 or CREMAS05 Structure say EDIDC,
      >>      You Should Fill  Your Mapped Entries In Data Structure of EDIDC.
      >>      So that Those Fields Gets Framed as Segments.
    <u><b>Step 4:</b></u>
