Picture alias in finder broken

Sorry for the bad subject title, and english i suppose.
In Finder you have on the left side a menu with shortcuts.
One of them is the Picture alias, if you drop a jpg on this, you can see a green PLUS button, and the folder pictures wil open.
If i do this once, it is oke, but when i go back to, for example documents, and want's to do the same trick, i get a error message says, that the pad cannot be found.
So i have to delete the alias, en place a new one.
The same will happen, i can use it once, en the second time the link is broken.
Does someone know a solution?

Log back into your normal user account:
Here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder.
1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO & Helvetica Fractions, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
• Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
• Restart and test your applications.
• If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
• Navigate to YourHome/Library.
• Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
• Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
• Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
• Click on "apply to all"
• If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
Note:
The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.

  • How do I find broken aliases

I relocated some of the files on my iMac, not I don't know if such move has invalidated any existing aliases. I want to find all the broken aliases.
I looked into Spotlight. It does not seem to have an option to do so.
I opened the command window and tried to use the good old UNIX "find" command.
    find -L . -type l -print
Only the good linked files are shown. All the broken alias (i.e. the alias points to a non-existing file because it moved or deleted) were not shown. I used one of the known broken alias to test if the search was effective. The answer is no. The broken alias is displayed as a zero size file. The UNIX "ls -l" command does not even show the "l" indicator in the permission code. A valid alias is shown with the "l".
Please tell me if you know any trick to find all the broken aliases.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the information. For some reason, my file system still have a few invalid aliases. They may or may not be caused by the file move. They may be caused by changes in my external drive. Perhaps something was changed off-line or while I was in another login account. Apparently if User1 and user2 both have an alias on a file and when user1 move that file, user2 alias will not be updated. It may not have happened like that, but it appears to.
Other than buying a software for the task. Is there anyway to find broken aliases using out-of-the-box Apple software tools?

  • Why is my picture library in finder different than in IPhoto

i want to drag my picture library in finder to an external drive.  But when i compare the pictures in finder it does not have all of the folders i have set up in iphoto

    Hello ccfr1234,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you are seeing different photos in another iPhoto Library on your computer than what you're used to, then you likely have opened another library which is on your computer.  To see the iPhoto Libraries stored on your computer, please follow the directions below.
    To switch between photo libraries:
    Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
Select the library you want to switch to.
    Click Choose.
iPhoto '11: Create a new iPhoto library or switch between libraries
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • I can't see my pictures in teh finder using Quick look or Cover flow

I have iPhoto8 installed and it works fine, but I cannot get a look at my library of photos without opening iPhoto. I thought I was supposed to be able to use the finder and cover flow to see my pictures quickly to find the one I wanted without opening iPhoto? When I go to pictures I get the icon for the iphoto program and it says iphoto library, but I cant see pictures. Am I doing something wrong?

    OBGYNDR
With iPhoto 7 the old iPhoto Library Folder has become a Unix Style Package folder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of these are safer and fster than surfing the iPhoto Library Folder.

    TD

  • After scanning a picture, I cannot find it on my iMac.

After scanning a picture i cannot find it on my iMac. the scanner says it was sent and to check my computer screen.

Thanks, Tom.  As you can see, I was spelling it incorrectly!  Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
Actually, I am interested in getting better with some command line work, although I have to admit I'm tremendously rusty.  My last work with Unix was > 10 years ago.
    Appreciate the reply.
By the way, I'll also consider Carbon Copy Cloner.  Looks like a great program for point-and-click folks like me.

  • See an edited picture unedited in finder

    Hello guys and girls.
I really need to see an edited picture unedited in finder. I have seen it before with my own eyes on my own computer that it works.
I saw an edited picture in this view in finder:
    http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/5781/lolfzf.png
and i saw more than the original picture was shown, I mean, lets say the picture above didnt have the left building when having the picture in Preview.app, But in this view in finder i can see the picture, i mean like that.
I want to know how that was possible becaouse i'd like to see another picture like this now

A cached version of the image? Simply, QuickView shows you what's there. Not what was there. If you saw what you say it was a fluke. It's just not a feature.
    Regards

  • Cannot find my "Pictures folder" in Finder and was using the "all Images" selection to fiddle with my pictures.  Now I think I may have screwed iPhoto up

Cannot find my "Pictures folder" in Finder and was using the "all Images" selection to fiddle with my pictures.  Now I think I may have screwed iPhoto up

    Hi jamesxio,
Do you still have the Pictures folder in your home folder? If not, create a new folder in your home folder and name it Pictures. Make sure the iPhoto Library folder is in the Pictures folder.
Now launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed until you get a message screen. Choose to open another library and navigate to and highlight the iPhoto Library folder. Click the Open button.
You didn't move anything around or rename anything in the iPhoto Library folder in the finder, did you?

  • Adding folder alias to finder Sidebar in Lion with AppleScript

I am creating 2 AppleScripts to automate mounting Windows shared drives on Lion Macbook Airs.  The first creates an alias on the user's desktop to the user's shared drive.  This is functional and doing what I want it to do.
The 2nd script attempts to create a favorite to the alias in Finder's sidebar.  Unfortunately, I can't seem to get this script to work.
I am attempting to create an alias on a user's desktop to a folder in a Windows network share.  Here is my applescript:
set user_name to (short user name of (system info))
    tell application "Finder"
      activate
set myFolder to ((home as text) & "Desktop:" & user_name)
      select myFolder
              tell application "System Events"
      keystroke "t" using command down
              end tell
    end tell
The script runs, Finder opens to the user's folder, but nothing is added to the side.
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Nevermind... figured it out.  I needed to open the folder for the command to work, so I added:
open myFolder after the select line.

  • Looking for Desktop image, can only find alias, which is broken

    Hi,
I'm trying to find the file that is currently set as my desktop wallpaper.  I've looked in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist and found a file name that looks right, DSCF0038.JPG.  The path itself is pretty scrambled (see below for full string) but using 'find' in Terminal I came up with a path for an alias with that name.  Unfortunately the alias is broken.  Assuming all the steps I've taken so far are correct I should be able to access the file somehow; the desktop does.  Any ideas?

    Hi Mike,
    Os it here?
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Safari/Safari Desktop Picture.jpg
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Safari/Safari Desktop Picture.png
But could be .gif or a few more as far as extensions.
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Cannot remove a broken sidebar network folder alias in Finder window

Mac OS 10.6.7 -- WinXP Home
I have a created netowork folder alias in the sidebar of my Finder window that points to a shared folder on an officemate's PC (WinXP Home). This folder has been deleted on the officemate's computer. Now, in my Finder window, I cannot click on the alias. Clicking on the broken network sidebar folder aliases or dragging them off of the side bar (they used to vanish in a puff of smoke but now they don't) does nothing.
I can right/control-click is but the only option in the sub-menu is "Open Sidebar Preferences..." and nothing else (other aliases have all the options including "Remove from sidebar"). I can't even drag the folder aliases off of the sidebar in a puff of smoke either. I'm at a loss on this one.
Any ideas how to remove these broken sidebar aliases? Even opening the sidebar preference panel yielded nothing I could see that would help.

If you have installed Developer Tools on your Mac (Optional Installs on your MacOS X installer DVD) then you can delete individual aliases in the Finder sidebar, using Property List Editor, which you'll find in Developer > Applications > Utilities.
In your Home folder go to User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Control-right click and choose Open With > Property List Editor.
Scroll down to "useritems" and click the grey arrow next to it to reveal contents.
Click the arrow next to CustomListItems and you'll see a list of entries marked "Item" with a numeric suffix.
Click the grey arrow next to the Item whose number corresponds to the sidebar alias that you want to get rid of and you'll see the info associated with that entry, including its name, as seen in the sidebar.
If it's the right one, click again on the Item header (i.e. "Item [x]") and hit delete.
Quit Property List Editor and Save changes.
Quit and relaunch Finder and that item will be gone from the sidebar list. Everything else will still be there, and you won't need to rebuild the list.

  • Finder Broken

So I'm pretty sure that the logmein software (logmein.com) has somehow broken my Finder or a link between the System and the Finder. I've uninstalled logmein, but the damage has been done. Here's what's happening...
My computer is set to turn on in the morning before I get to work, then perform backups and shutdown after I leave. But lately it hasn't been working. When I come in the morning, my computer is on and logged in, but I have a blank desktop (with my desktop photo showing). No desktop files or alias', no Macintosh HD. I can click on the Finder icon in the dock and it all comes back and works fine throughout the day. But it doesn't seem to be shutting down at night. When I manually perform a shutdown (normal - through the apple menu), all the apps will shutdown properly, and the Finder will quit. But the computer doesn't shut off. It looks like it does in the morning with the blank desktop. The only way to turn off the machine is a hard boot.
So how do I fix that? I'm guessing a reinstall of the OS would get it done, but I'm looking for a less nuclear solution. Any ideas?

Perhaps when you removed the app which may have caused this issue,
not all of it went away. Did it include its own Uninstaller as part of the app?
If not, there are free ware Uninstall apps available for download that can
help find parts of applications that were installed into locations where the
bits won't get trashed by a simple drag or move to trash action.
I've looked around and there are a few free-ware ones, per this example.
    • AppCleaner v. 1.1.2 (for 10.4 & later) - actually 'donationware' runs free:
    http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/
A variety of Uninstall apps for Mac are listed online, such as this page shows:
    • *Uninstallers for Mac*:
    http://download.cnet.com/mac/uninstallers/3150-2096_4-0.html
There may be other ways to schedule what you want, perhaps via a different
application; and just maybe one of the other choices is more compatible(?)
In this matter, I have no immediate ideas of my own, however.
Since I recently acquired another Mac, not a replacement for any others, it
is running Leopard 10.5.8 and fully updated as of yesterday; a G4 mini.
The others all are running Tiger 10.4.11 (and gracefully) so I am starting to
remember what put me off about Leopard 10.5 in the first place, years ago.
Hopefully you won't have to go as far as another install; that should not be
    required. There may be some trail of information in the computer's logs;
either in Console (several, won't apply to the matter) or maybe in Profiler.
Some logs show all kinds of stuff going on behind the scenes and of those,
there would likely be evidence. Here is another info source for ideas:
    • Uninstalling Applications in Mac OS X:
    http://guides.macrumors.com/UninstallingApplications_in_Mac_OSX
Does a second user account exhibit any odd effects, or is the issue confined
only to the main User account? You could set up a new admin level user and
migrate your basic stuff over to it, being careful to not move everything over.
Then delete the old user account, if the issue can be shown to reside there.
In fact, you could probably find the cause and be rid of it. There may be some
preference .plist kinds of files created by the app in question, to be removed.
But I have no idea to what extent that would involve looking into it.
    Good luck, & happy computing!

  • A script to identify pictures in the Finder not added to Aperture?

Does anyone know of a script that can check out the contents of a folder containing a series of nested folders holding files that are being referenced in the Aperture Library and point out the files in that folder which have not been added to the Aperture Library?
The majority of the files in that folder (thousands) are being actively referenced in my Aperture Library, but for whatever reason that I won't get into, a few hundred pictures that are in that folder somewhere have had their links to Aperture broken and it would be great if I could identify which files those were and hook them back up to Aperture.
These are all pretty old pictures that I likely won't ever need to be touching ever again, so if the solution is going to be a massive re-doing of my Library, then it won't be worth it, but if it can be done relatively easily then, ya know…it'd be nice to have the Library be "perfect" and free from broken links

    Thanks for your reply.
What you are suggesting is part of the process that I am using to reconnect these missing files.
The part that I am needing help with is the "If you direct Aperture to the first of those missing masters" aspect.  There are so many pictures in my reference library location (all nester in folders, so I can't just use Coverflow to skim through them and find the missing file to reconnect) that it would be extremely time consuming for me identify the correct file.
Even if I do a spotlight search for "DSC_00413" in that folder, I get back ~500 results.
This is why I feel that the script option to consolidate all of those "unconnected to Aperture" files in one folder, where I can then use Coverflow to identify them would be most effective.
EDIT: I manged to do it though, by using Aperture's "Relocate Masters" command to move all files linked to Aperture to another location, thus leaving all "unconnected" files in their current location

  • Pictures gone from finder

I have made the photos icon disappear in a puff of smoke.
I could not 'undo' this move. It is gone from the finder window.
I was dragging it down into the dock, and then it disappered.
Does anyone know how to get it back into finder
    Thank you.

    Hi David!
The icons in the Sidebar, and also in the Dock, are merely Aliases, or Shortcuts, to the original folder or application, which is not affected, by the action of dragging off.
When you drag them off as you did, they will disappear, as you have seen.
The method that roam has posted will work to replace the Alias icon in the Sidebar.
When you drag the folder from your Home folder to the Sidebar, you must position it below the separator bar.
To put an Alias icon in the Dock, you can also open the folder where the application or folder resides, and position the cursor on the item, hold down on the mouse, drag the item to the Dock, and release the pressure on the mouse.
If the item is a folder, like your Pictures folder, drag it to the right of the separator bar.
If the item is an application, drag it to the left of the separator bar.
    Good Luck!
    ali b
