Submit the comment without picture, the edit it.
Once you edit the comment, you have the full editor, including the "attach" button.
Now attach the image and submit the edited comment.
Now edit it again and embed the attachment (you only see it whe editing).
Do all this quickly so you don't run out of time.
Laura,
Since the last forum update, we can no longer attach anything when editing an idea so these instructions are no longer valid. Can we have the old functionality back? Please?
Thanks!

  • Announcing the NI Idea Exchange!

I am happy to announce a new feature available to our community members!  The NI Idea Exchange is a product feedback forum where NI R&D and users work together to submit ideas, collaborate on their development, and vote for the ones they like best. Right now we only offer the LabVIEW Idea Exchange but hope to offer Idea Exchanges that feature additional products in the future. Post an idea or add your opinion on an existing one today!
Be sure to check out the NI Idea Exchange tour from LabVIEW Community Manager Todd Sierer:

It seems it is impossible to float the "ideas" board, even though the button exists. Is this by design or an oversight?

That would be a good explanation.  There was a thread on something very similar to this recently.  Can't remember exactly the topic but Daniel's answer certainly triggered some memories of a very similar discussion taking place.
I think it had to do with LV assigning a Array created as a constant as Read-only so in order to make changes to it it needs to be copied to a new memory location, thus leaving the constant unchanged.
I wonder how it performs in other LV versions.
    Shane.

Is it possible to add a feature to View the latest messages posted onto the LabVIEW Idea Exchange.  The ability to sort by last message would suffice.  I like to follow the discussions, but sometimes I see there's a new message, but I have to click through 40 pages to find which topic the reply was posted to.

Yes.  That is pretty much the only way right now to be sure you get all the messages.  Occasionally, I can still miss some.  For instance, if I have an e-mail that I thought I clicked on and read the idea linked in it, but actually haven't.  Or the way the long threads that go onto multiple pages, and I miss the last message that rolls onto a new page and I didn't realize it because the link to go to the next page is at the top of the screen.  (And why don't the messages show you that 5 pages are avaible to that thread.)  You can see a count of total messages.  But it will show you Now 1-10, and a link to go to 11-21.  But there is no link to go to the last page.  You have to go through the pages one by to get the link to the following page.
The naviagation controls in the individual threads need major improvement.  (i.e. jump links at the bottom as well as the top, and links that go to other places then the page that just follows your current page.)  And the whole board needs a real sorting mechanism that allows you to view the newest messages whether they are the original message or comments.  The "snapshot" links to the right of the screen just really don't do that.

  • 24 Great Ideas from Idea Exchange for you to Kudos

There are 1140 ideas on the LabVIEW Idea Exchange right now. That's a lot of ideas, and it doesn't even count the RT or FPGA exchanges. Reading through all of them is something most of you can't spend time doing. Some of the ideas quickly garner a lot of Kudos, and those jump to the top of the lists and get attention from NI. Others are good, but they languish, lost in the noise.
I have read them all, generally by staying up-to-date on the forum ever since its inception. I kudos'd many as I went. Over the weekend, I went through all of the ideas I had kudos'd and picked out a set that I think a lot of customers would want but that don't have the high Kudos ratings. Maybe these got posted on a weekend or holiday. Maybe the title is a bit misleading and you didn't bother to read it. Or maybe you've just stopped reading the Idea Exchange because you couldn't keep up with the wash of words fellow wire workers are writing. Perhaps this simplified menu will be a bit easier to browse.
To be clear: I'm not including any of the ideas that already have high Kudos counts. Those are great ideas, but they've already got their time in the sun. These are the little quiet ideas that I think might make a big impact on your productivity, your VI's functionality or your VIs performance. All of these had fewer than 100 Kudos when I made this list. Full disclosure: Two ideas on the list (12 & 23) are ones I submitted to the Exchange. I think they warrant being on the list, but maybe I'm biased because they happen to affect the areas of LV I use most. You be the judge... :-)

A good example is the fact that one of the most popular ideas ever was the idea to adjust the design of the boolean constant.  Altenbach, who came up with that idea, have received less kudos for other ideas that I'm sure would give him (and us) much higher benefits. Popularity and greatness are very often two different things.
Although I get your general point, having used LV 2010 in beta for the last few months, the improvement of readability of diagrams brought by the boolean constant change cannot be understated. Tons of VIs have arrays of boolean constants on them, have boolean constants squeezed into small corners, etc, and the redesign has helped A LOT.
Speaking to your general point -- my goal was to find low-ranked ideas that I felt would have significant developer impact and give people a second chance to review those ideas. Are there other ideas among the 1000 that are worth doing? Sure. I tried to find a broad enough set that people could actually make a meaningful choice of what to kudos (any fewer and it would be akin to "hey, everyone, come vote for this particular idea"). And it does rely upon my opinion -- though I tried to use my professional opinion as someone who regularly hears user feedback to promote ideas that I think users would generally like, as opposed to my personal opinion as a LV developer to improve the areas of LV that I personally use a lot.
I know that customers like it when NI is responsive to its demands. I know that NI knows this and so is proactively trying to address concerns that make it high on the Idea Exchange. LV 2010 is coming out in August. If you look at the ideas that are tagged "In Beta", you can see the responsiveness of NI. As we start work on the next version of LV (or rather, full time work, since future versions of LV are always already in work -- we are a parallel language in so many ways), we're going to go find the next batch of ideas to implement. But I also know that there can be user fatigue with the Idea Exchange's massive amount of content. That fatigue can lead to a strange situation where NI addresses the high flying concerns and, users are still left feeling they didn't quite get what they wanted, but they maybe can't say why because, after all, NI implemented the high kudos ideas. I cherry picked some ideas that, if implemented, I think would get a lot of people saying, "Yes, LV is now better" as a way of avoiding some of that fatigue effect. Is it a list of earthshattering ideas that revolutionize LV? No. It is a list of incremental improvements that should affect lots of people and make LV recognizably better to its users.

  • Why is the Real-Time Idea Exchange completely ignored?

Just looked at the LabVIEW Real-Time Idea Exchange and noticed that only one idea is marked completed, and two more (both posted in 2009, nearly 5 years ago) are "In Development." Those ideas aren't even the top-kudoed ones. NI - why ask for ideas for improvements, and then not implement any of them? (Yes, I have a personal interest here - the second-most kudoed idea in the real-time area is one of mine.)

First off let me say thanks to you and all of the Idea Exchange contributors. The whole purpose of the Idea Exchange is for you, the users of the NI Platform, to bring your considerable experience to the table as we continue adding features and functionality to the NI Platform. Your passion is one of the primary forces that causes the NI Platform to grow and change in varous ways so that the application challenges of scientists and engineers all over the world can be solved.
There are many user suggestions across the whole Idea Exchange for us to weigh when considering how to allocate our development resources. We try to judiciously consider which ideas will have the biggest impact on the NI Platform users, and as a result we often have to say "no" or "wait" to some ideas so we can say "yes" to others. You're definitely correct that the statuses need to be updated and I'll be doing so in the near future. Though this may give the impression of being ignored, I want to assure you that the ideas are read and evaluated by the R&D and Product Marketing departments with careful thought and deliberate intent.
We hope that events such as NIWeek bolster your confidence in the progress of the NI Platform as you see the new hardware and software features being introduced. Though you may not see an immeadiate reward for your dilligence in suggesting ideas, please continue submitting your ideas. The long term effect will be a powerful platform of products designed to meet the community's needs. Thank you for your continued support and engagement.

  • Support the launch of an NI TestStand Idea Exchange!

    Calling all TestStand users!
While I love TestStand, I've got some ideas on how it could be improved, and I'm sure you do too.  NI recently launched a new platform for getting and tracking ideas on how to improve thier products called the NI Idea Exchange.  If you haven't seen what it's about, see the intro video here and then have a wander through the wildly successful LabVIEW Idea Exchange here.
There's already a LabVIEW Idea Exchange, a LabVIEW RT Idea Exchange and a LabVIEW FPGA Idea Exchange, so why not a TestStand Idea Exchange?  Well, setting it up and supporting it takes time and resources, so, we need to let NI know that we think having one is worthwhile.  If you're interested in furthering the development of TestStand, you need to let NI know that you're interested in a TestStand Idea Exchange!  If the idea of a TestStand Idea Exchange appeals to you, please post here to show your support.

  • LabVIEW IDE crashing!

    Hi there,
I have just run into some very strange behaviour in LabVIEW (7.0 on Win2k with service pack 2).
I have an event structure with several user events (about 12) listed in it. Everything was working fine yesterday. Today I tried to add another user event to the structure and LabVIEW crashed (giving usual cryptic error message saying referenced memory could not be read).
Now, I have experimented quite a bit, and have the following observations to give:
LabVIEW is happy adding more events until I try and add an event if the currently selected event is a Filter event (i.e Mouse Down?).
I have a certain Mouse Down? filter event, and if I change this to a non-filtered Mouse Down event then LabVIEW lets me add more event cases as normal. However, I need this to be a filtered event (i.e with the "?"), and in this case, the next I try and add results in the LabVIEW IDE crashing. I can add more events as long as I dont have a filtered event case currently selected, so I suppose this is a work-around.
To clarify, this occurs when I am trying to add events at design time, not at run time.
I tried to replicate this in a new VI, and everything works fine as expected :-(
I can't really attach the VI.
Has anybody else noticed behaviour like this???

    hi there
    thanks for your suggestions
    >> A couple of suggestions:
    >>1. Try opening the VI on a different computer\LV version.
    >>2. Try copying all the code in the VI into another VI and see if this still happens.
    >>3. Start deleting pieces of the VI until it stops (or there is nothing left).
I tried options 2 (same crash) and option 3 (crash stops when I delete the Filter events) before I posted the question.
I have tried opening the VI on another PC (also Win2k) with the same version of LabVIEW and it also crashes.
    sigh...
I suppose I am just going to have to work around it for now... strange bug...

  • How come "overlay" and "stack" are not found in the LabVIEW help?

In searching the posted questions and answers, I got the vibe that the answer to my problem
might lie in "stacked" or "overlaid" charts.
Imagine my surprise when searching for these words turned up nothing.
(OK, not quite. I do find Plot Multi-XY, but the documentation on that so bare-bones as to be no help whatsoever.)

Thank you for posting comments on the LabVIEW documentation. We're constantly striving to improve the documentation, so any specific suggestions you have are welcome. In the future, please send any comments on National Instruments documentation to [email protected] so we can address your concerns in a timely matter.
Regarding your specific question, I encourage you to search two locations in the documentation when you are looking for information. You searched the online help, but you also can search all PDF documents at one time. To do so, select Help>>View Printed Manuals in LabVIEW, click the Search button, and type in the word you want to search for. Doing so searches all PDF documents installed with LabVIEW, including manuals, application notes, white papers, a
    nd so on.
If you were to search for "overlaid" or "stacked", you would find the following text in the LabVIEW User Manual and a graphic illustrating the plots:
    "Overlaid Versus Stacked Plots
You can display multiple plots on a chart by using a single vertical scale, called overlaid plots, or by using multiple vertical scales, called stacked plots. Figure 11-2 shows examples of overlaid plots and stacked plots. Refer to the Charts VI in the examples\general\graphs\charts.llb for examples of different kinds of charts and the data types they accept."
I will make a note of your feedback and we will try to improve the documentation of these plots in the online help.
Again, thank you for your feedback and please send any specific feedback directly to [email protected]

  • This idea is too extreme for idea exchange

This idea was partly inspired by this one and is so far out there that I didn't want to post it on the idea exchange.
Can anyone from NI give me an idea if it would be possible to port LabVIEW and everything about it to Eclipse in time for LV2025? Don't get me wrong I really like LabVIEW but the UI definately shows how long it has been around.
If this is not TOO crazy then maybe I will suggest it over there.

    LabVIEW 2012

A lot of people think of Eclipse as a Java Integrated Development Environment. But it has become a cross platform IDE "for everything and nothing in particular". It is a BSDish license so that part is easy. There are all kinds of tools that use Eclipse that are graphical in nature such as database entity relationship models and UML tools.
    The IDE is awesome.

I-photo:  I used 2 cameras to take pictures on a trip --- i have put the pictures from both cameras into an album --- when i click on view and then sort by date, the pictures do not sort by date --- any ideas on how to get the pics sorted by date?

Select all the photos that you need to change, then click the "Photos" menu and choose "Adjust Date and Time".
If you add a year, it will adjust all the photos that you selected by adding a year (so if you accidentally select one of the photos that already has "2012", that will change to "2013").

  • After upgrading my 3gs to ios5, I get 2 copies of pictures synced from my computer, 1 in the Photo Library and another in a library with the same name as the folder I put the pictures in to put on the phone. Any ideas why?

When syncing pictures from my computer to my I-Phone I get 2 copies of the pictures, 1 in the Photo Library and another in a library with the same name as the folder I put pictures in to put on the phone. This started after I upgraded to ios5. I have tried re-installing I-Tunes. I have not reset the phone. My main concern is the amount of memory pictures take up on the phone. It's not a problem now but could be in the future. Any Ideas on why this happening?

It has always been this way.  it was never different.  This is how the iphone handles photos - always has.
There are NOT two copies,  There are simply two ways to access the very same photos.  All synced photos will ALWAYS be under Photo Library ( you can look at all photos at once this way or do a slideshow of all photos).  Those very same photos can also be accessed from the individual folders so you can show or slideshow just that folder.
Just as a book can be in the library and in the fiction section, there is only one book/photo.
