Picture In Picture question.

Hi, I'm new to iMovie and I am having an issue with Picture In Picture. I don't even know if I am using the right feature. Anyway, from my desktop, I am dragging a picture into my project and selecting Picture In Picture (I already have advanced mode on) and so far I am having an issue. When I try to crop/fit it, it is keeping to its aspect ratio, which is not right. I need a non cropped, non boxed image on my footage and no matter how much I explore the program or Google it, I can't find how to do it. Any help is appreciated!

YOu say you are not sure if you are using the right feature.
Use PIP if you want a small picture or video to be superimposed over your video while the video keeps running underneath.
Use CUTAWAY if you want the underlying video clip's audio to keep playing underneath while you substitute a different photo or video clip on top in full screen.
If you just want to add a photo to your project, just drag the photo in from the photo browser.

  • Two questions ... QAM tuner and Picture-in-Picture Capability

#1) Do either the "Proscan Model: 40LC45S" or the "Insignia Model: NS-L42Q-10A" have a QAM tuner?  This is the digital tuner that allows the TV to tune in non-encripted cable channels without requiring a box from the cable company.  The BestBuy specification pages are useless regarding this information.  THis information is readily available on teh web for all non-BestBuy products.
#2) Do either of the same two TVs support the Picture-in-Picture capability?
Thanks, in advance, for the information!

Quote from the model NS-L42Q-10A User Manual, Page 48, Specifications:
      "Analog Standard     NTSC
       Digital Standard      ATSC, 8-VSB, Clear-QA"
Wouldn't this imply that this set has three tuners: NTSC, ATSC, and QAM?
    Under Product Features:
"Built-in HDTV tuner:  Add HD-capable antenna to receive over-the-air high-definition broadcasts, where available."
Not sure what that means - probably refers to ATSC tuner.
It's quite possible that I may have missed this when I was first reviewing both TVs' specs, but if the NS-L42Q-10A's user manual says that it includes Clear-QAM capabilities then it most certainly would feature a built-in QAM tuner.
    Thanks for pointing that out!

  • Hiding picture-in-picture

Several people have posted questions about suppressing ithe picture-in-picture.
I've just upgraded my copy of Conference Recorder and it has a checkbox for hiding the picture-in-picture. I don't think it was in the previous version.

    Hey Ralph:
It is not necessary to record the iChat in order to remove the PNP window. There is a new tab button added that allows you to unselect the PNP window. Free trial too!
It even works while your in a video chat, so you can change it on the fly!
    Nice catch!

For the first question: place one video on top of the other, as a connected clip. Change the size and position as you wish.
You have many questions that suggest you are very unfamiliar with the application. I think you'd be well served by going through a few online tutorials. All the things you ask are easy and fun to do in FCP X. It is best to learn by seeing it done. Look at rippletraining.com, izzyvideo.com, and others. I am sure you'll find that it will be time well spent.

  • Split clip of a picture in picture

    Question,
When using picture and picture or a cutaway, I would like to split the top part into sections. Using the split clip command on it splits the lower main video, but not the one on top.
I am attempting to edit video from 2 cameras of the same event into one movie. I also would like to keep the sync intact through the entire thing and not have to resync each camera change by hand. I know Final Cut Express and pro can do this sort of thing, but everything costs money...
There is a neat trick with a cutaway or picture in picture- you can open the clip editor and adjust the opacity from 0% (invisible so you see what is underneath) to 100% (so you see only the top video). So the idea is to use the cutaway to paste the camera 2 ontop of camera 1, sync them once, then split the top video and delete sections or it (or reduce it opacity to 0%), thereby showing the video underneath...
    any ideas?

Provide the full path to the picture file. Or if you're going to use a relative path, make sure it's relative to your current working directory.
I don't know what you mean by a "local" file or by "my workspace".

  • Picture in Picture or the like of, possible?

I have the latest version of both iMovie and Final Cut Express HD. I enjoy making videos and often do so for my church, school, etc. I was using Cyberlink PowerDirector on Windows and Pinnacle 8. On those programs you can layer videos and photos to create a "picture in picture" like effect. I was wondering if that is possible on Final Cut Express HD or iMovie. I used that feature alot and while I have quite a bit of training on iMovie, I have very little on Final Cut. If anyone could help, it's much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    mackingtawsh

Forget everything you know about iMovie if you want to learn Final Cut.
The tutorials that came with the software are a wonderful place to start. Tom Wolsky has a book out that is also recommended.

  • Picture-in-picture capable tv with FIOS

Hi, I'm hoping I can get some tips/pointers on how to set this up. I have a TV that has "picture-in-picture" capability - you can watch one channel whilst have a little corner of the TV showing another channel. Does anyone have any idea how I set this up? Do I need to have 2 signals coming into the TV? Thanks in advance for any and all info. Please feel free to email me directly - bcmchong at hotmail.
    Thanks much.

QAM is a modulation scheme that is used by cable companies for digital TV broadcast - Quadrature Amplitude Modulation.  Analog cable systems and older TVs use NTSC (in the US) - this is the modulation scheme that was used in boadcast TV until June 12th of this year when the US went all digital using a modulation commonly referred to as ATSC.  Unless your TV is newer it will not have a QAM or ATSC tuner - try looking in the manual under specifications and see what it lists for tuning.  If it only says something like "120 channel cable ready" then it doesn't have a QAM tuner.

  • Pan&Zoom in Picture-in-Picture; Zoomen&Schwenken mit Bild-in-Bild; Premiere Elements 13

    Hi,
    my question is:
I want to have the Pan&Zoom-Effect (also known as Ken-Burns-Effect) in a smaller Picture in the bigger background Picture. Every time I'm using the Pan&Zoom- Tool the Picture-in-Picture Effect disappears and the smaller Picture becomes a full frame Picture.  Is it possible to have both effects in one Picture?
Thanks for your Time and Support.
    Hallo,
    meine Frage lautet:

Here are two ways in the Expert mode in the pse 11 Editor:
(it works pretty much like pse 8, except the Tool Options are at the bottom of the workspace in pse 11)
    1. Use the Custom Shape Tool and in the drop-down choose the Arrows set
Set the options for the Shape Tool to Line and use the options in the tool options bar.

  • Creating a 50% picture in picture effect in Pr CS3

I am learning CS3 for the first time after 4 years on Avid. One of my struggles........
I need to create a split screen, equally showing 2 layers of video, a 50% picture in picture effect if you will separated by a thin black divider line. I only see the 25% PiPs on Premiere Pro and can't find any other PiPs in After Effects.
Can anyone tell me how to do this effect?
    I thank you in Advance

  • Picture-in-Picture, compositing, 4 clips playing in 1 movie

    Greetings,
I'm trying to create a movie that consists of 3, 4 or 5 small movies all playing at once in one movie. Sort of like the screen is broken up into quadrants and each movie plays independently. As part of this objective, I need to hear the audio for each clip as well, most likely dialogue or singing. Can I do this in FCE or some other s-ware? It's not really compositing, and it's not really picture-in-picture...I just don't know what to call it.
    Thanks in advance!!

Thanks Dave. I did do a search and that turned up a few things, but the answer that Neil supplied above was pretty close. Another post referred to this site which had a plug-in called "Quarter PIP" which does some of the same thing for me. I'm not sure, given what this filter does if the audio for all clips will be present?
    http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/QuarterPIP.html
I could do a mix in some other program of the audio tracks so that I can control the levels of each of the clips separately.
This brings up another question, which is distinct enough from this that I'll put into another topic (see below).

  • Picture in Picture not exporting? (semi emergency)

So I am making a video for work that involves using PIP. It looks perfect in the .prel, but when I export it to any form, the PIP disappears.
I have made sure that the eye is open and I copied the exact things the tutorials did.
I am using Adobe Premiere Elements 12.

    onogmuffins
For now I am assuming that your Premiere Elements 12 is on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
What specific PiP effect did you use....was it from fxEffects/Presets and one of the 25% or 40% ones or did you create the picture in picture effect by scaling down an image over the background below it?
I suspect that you have a project mismatch of settings somewhere along the line, so prepare yourself for the following questions.besides the details of how you created the PiP effect.
    1. What are the properties of your source media - brand/model/settings for camera that recorded the files
    Video Compress
    Audio Compress
    Frame Size
    Frame Rate
    Interlaced or Progressive
    File Extension
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
    2. When you played back the Timeline content in the Edit area monitor, did the monitor space have any black borders?
    3. What are the details of your export...
Publish+Share/what/what and what preset? Did you use the defaults for the preset selected or did you customize the preset
under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of that preset?
Let us start here, and then we can decided what next based on your details.
    Thanks.

  • Can I pause a picture-in-picture video?

    Hello,
I'm really new to Premiere Elements 10, so forgive me if this is an obvious question.
I would like to have a background video, with three smaller videos liuned up along the left edge (using a picture-in-picture idea), but not have the three small videos play immediately. What I woudl like to do is have them show as if they were paused on the first frame, then play each one in turn.
I suppose I could do this by taking a snapshot of the first frame, adding that as a static image, then adding the video itself at the point where I want it to start playing, and hide the static image, but that sounds like a lot of work for the effect. I was hoping there ight be an easier way to do it.
    Thanks for any help.

    Gertrude,
Your method is the only way to accomplish this. Basically, you are creating a Freeze Frame, of the first Frame of your PiP Videos, for the desired Duration. You don't need to "hide" anything, as you would just place the Freeze Frame in front of the Video, on that Video Track, and extend its Duration to suit. Those Freeze Frames will need to be Scaled to exactly match the Motion>Scaling, that you apply to the respective Video, and the Motion>Position will need to match up identically.
With three PiP Videos, you will likely benefit from creating an Alignment Grid, to help with the Scaling and Positioning. This ARTICLE gives some tips on doing that.
    Good luck,

  • How do you rotate picture in picture

I have a picture in picture and I would like to rotate the top video.  I  have figured out how to rotate it 90 degrees, but I don't want it  straight up and down.  I would like to rotate it like 45 degrees, so  that it is at a different angle than the background video.  Is there a  way to do this?  Or will it only rotate in increments of 90 degrees?  (I posted this in the wrong section before, so I hope this is the right place now.)

Here is my reply to this question, when asked in the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. If anyone has any comments on my method, or a better method, please add them.
    Welcoome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks forum, which is a repository for articles on how to do things in PrE and PrPro, and few will see your post here. Hopefully our tireless MOD, Steve Grisetti, will move the post out to the main forum.
As for Rotation, one of the fixed Motion Effects, like Scale and Position, you can first use the numerical box (to the far right in the Effects>Edit Effects (Effects Control Panel) and either click then type in a value, or click-scrub to change the value. This will be static for your PiP Clip.
If you wish to Rotate over time, you will want to Keyframe the Rotation Effect, and Rotate Right, or Rotate Left can be chosen. First, opposite Motion, click on the "stopwatch" icon, and you will then see stopwatches appear for all of the fixed Effects. In Rotation, first locate the CTI (Current Time Indicator w/ the red edit line) on the first Frame of your Clip. Click on the stopwatch besides Rotation to add the first Keyframe. Now, move to the last Frame (hitting PageDn, then one cursoe back arrow on the keyboard, will do that for you), and hit the Add Keyframe button on the far right of the Rotation line - looks like a yen-yang diamond, and adjust that Keyframe's value. Note: if you want multiple Rotations, beyond 360 degrees, that is possible, and you will see first a 1, then a 2 (for 2 revolutions).
Good luck, and hope that helps,
    Hunt
PS - Steve Grisetti has several great articles on Basic Keyframing on Muvipix.com, plus he's got several wonderful books on PrE, available there. Note: Muvipix, com is a multi-tier Web site, with the forum and some content available just for the free sign-up. Some of the material is available for purchase, or is all free with a subscription. It does not take many paid downloads, before one could have paid for a subscription.

  • Crop and Zoom for picture-in-picture

I would like zoom into the part of a video and crop it so when I re-size it for picture-in-picture, I can see the only cropped area. Is that possible?
    Thanks,

I am a bit confused. Do you have PrPro CS 5 / 5.5, or PrElements? The reason that I ask is the post to the PrE forum HERE.
As I said in that thread, the answer is "yes," but we need to know exactly what you wish to do, so that we can tell you how to do it.
    My questions:
Now, before we go into a lot of details, that might not apply, let me see if I can understand exactly what you want to do.
You have a Clip on the Video 1 Track in your Timeline. You want to zoom in on a part of that Clip. Am I correct on that?
Now, you talk about a PiP and also cropping. What do you want to crop?
Can you describe the PiP treatment, that you plan on using? For general PiP treatment, you would place the PiP Clip onto, say Video 2, and then Scale and alter its Position to suit. Is it the PiP Clip, that needs cropping?
With those answers, and any more details that you can furnish, we can tell you how to do, what you desire.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Simple border on picture-in-picture

I'm trying to put simple borders on two items with FCPX 10.0.7:
Picture in picture (clip in clip) after I've transformed and trimmed the smaller clip.
PIP (still photo in clip) after I've transformed and applied Ken Burns to the photo.
In both cases, the border shows on only one side of the smaller item, or in some attempts 2 sides, but never all 4 sides.
Surely there's a way. What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you.

Thank you, Luis and Karsten. To answer your question, Luis, I'd been trying to add the simple border via, well, the Simple Border effect. That works fine for PIPs that don't need to be trimmed, and for photos that aren't getting a Ken Burns effect. Otherwise, not so fine.
Before I saw Karsten's reply, in desperation I'd already done a somewhat kludgy approach, along the lines of what Luis suggested: I put a generated rectangle behind the PIP, and carefully sized it to spill under the PIP just enough to look like a border, with the PIP stacked atop the rectangle in the story line.
The key, I found, was to make those 2 into a compound clip. Until I did that, the dissolve never looked right: there was a glimpse of the rectangle (not just its outer edges) behind the PIP, on both the dissolve in and dissolve out. But when the dissolve was applied to the compound clip rather than to the individual components, everything worked.
But my, that was more tedious than I'd have liked. Next time, I'll use Steve Martin's plugin.
    Thanks again for the help,
    Rich
