Picture in picture tricks?

Does anyone have good tricks to show two video sources at once in two different boxes. I have a lot of web-compressed video I want to include along with high-res pics and good quality video, so I want to reduce the screen size of the web stuff. With photos I can use a photo editor to add a black gradient and push the picture to show next to the video box. Video I'd rather have both files show completely in two different rectangles -- one small, one medium -- and create a background behind both. I don't see this as an option. Does anyone have any tricks, such as freezing a transition .. any other strategies for showing multiple sources on screen at same time in iMovie?

You could do this in Final Cut Pro.
If you want to do it in iMovie, do the first PIP and then Share it using Export with QuickTime in a high quality codec like Apple Intermediate Codec. Import this file back into your Event using File/Import Movie. Then add the second PIP.

  • In imovie, I have greenscreen clip.  First I want to change background to solid color THEN add a picture within picture.  When I try to stack all 3, I get two but not all three.....help!  thanks!

in imovie 10.0.2, i have a green screen clip.  first i want to change background - solid color probably - but then i'd like to also add a picture within picture along side the video....have attempted to "stack" all three, and can get two out of three but not all three....what's the trick?  thanks!

In iMovie you can only do two at a time. So the work-around would be to do the green screen/change background color part. Then Share this. Then import this piece back into an event. Then add the picture in picture.
In Final Cut Pro X, you could easily do what you are describing.
The main reason is that iMovie does all rendering in one pass. Final Cut Pro X allows multiple renders as you go along, so you can do much more complex effects.

  • I cannot get transitions to apply to only the picture in picture. The transitions apply to the full screen.

When I add a picture-in-picture as a new storyline and apply a transition the effect occurs on the main story line also. For example, a page curl transition causes the whole screen to curl rather than just the picture-in-picture. I'm using FCPX version 10.1.4.
I want to be able to animate in different pictures in different parts of the screen it looks horrible with the effects applying to all the different pictures.

All due respect to Mr. Wolsky.  I have gotten this to work with many of the transitions.
Create a compound clip, open in the timeline and apply the transition(s).
Go back in the main timeline, make a storyline out of your compound clip.  Making it a storyline is what did the trick for me.  A compound clip alone would still have a full screen transition
I've had multiple PIPs doing cube transitions.  It should work for you
Is this what you're trying to do?   https://www.dropbox.com/s/mw51rs3dysd54cl/Transitions.mov?dl=0

  • Split clip of a picture in picture

    Question,
When using picture and picture or a cutaway, I would like to split the top part into sections. Using the split clip command on it splits the lower main video, but not the one on top.
I am attempting to edit video from 2 cameras of the same event into one movie. I also would like to keep the sync intact through the entire thing and not have to resync each camera change by hand. I know Final Cut Express and pro can do this sort of thing, but everything costs money...
There is a neat trick with a cutaway or picture in picture- you can open the clip editor and adjust the opacity from 0% (invisible so you see what is underneath) to 100% (so you see only the top video). So the idea is to use the cutaway to paste the camera 2 ontop of camera 1, sync them once, then split the top video and delete sections or it (or reduce it opacity to 0%), thereby showing the video underneath...
    any ideas?

Provide the full path to the picture file. Or if you're going to use a relative path, make sure it's relative to your current working directory.
I don't know what you mean by a "local" file or by "my workspace".

  • PE7: Split screen/picture in picture jerkiness problem?

I'm using Premiere Elements 7, creating a video that displays multiple videos at once. I tried:
Splitting the screen into four boxes of same size (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right), each filled with its own video
Having one main video with 3 picture-in-picture windows overlaid on top of the main
    I followed this instruction: http://www.heron-productions.com/4-splitscreen.html
In both cases, after I rendered work area, I see the video on Track 1 and sometimes Track 2 become very jerky, like skipping backwards and forwards by themselves. Exactly the same issue also when I export into final video. The only way I could solve this issue reliably is by decreasing the number of simultaneous videos/windows to two.
I have also tried this on another machine that has Premiere Pro CS4, resulting exactly the same issue. Very confusing since at least Premiere Pro should be able to do this just fine.
Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong? FWIW, all my sources are AVCHD files from a Canon HF100, and the project is a 1080 30i.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I figured I should've posted at the root forum, instead of in the Tips & Tricks. I'll probably try to repost this there. Anyway...
I don't think this is a hardware issue. It's not about trying to preview in realtime (although the bug shows up there too, after rendering work area). I can wait as long as I need if that's what it takes. But this problem is in the final render result. Yes, I do have an i7 setup for this: Core i7 920, 6GB DDR3 1600, ATI 4830 512MB, and disk load spread out among: 1x 1TB 32mb cache, 1x 750GB 32mb cache, 3x 500GB 16mb cache. They're not in RAID setup, but again, I can live with the current rendering time, which is more CPU-bottlenecked than disk-bottlenecked.
This bug also exists in Premiere Pro CS4 when I tried it on another machine with that app (I myself don't have CS4).
I rendered a short, lower resolution video to show how this bug looks like.
    http://cid-48ae90fe02b84e66.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Videos/PremiereBug.wmv
Notice the main video in the background. It becomes jerky from time to time when there are more than one PiPs. Take a look around 0:20 where it becomes even worse after the 3rd PiP shows up.

  • IMovie, PNG, Picture in Picture

I saw a great article on using PNG files to create transparent logos that you can include as a picture-in-picture. No matter what I do, I always end up with a black background instead of a transparent background. I've used both CMYK and RGB PNG images, and I have the same problem. I exported it as a PNG straight from the Illustrator file; I've tried opening that in Photoshop CS4 and converting it to a PNG8 file. No luck either way. The problem seems to be when it is imported to iPhoto, as that is when the background goes from transparent to black. But, I don't know another way to import a still photo to iMovie. Any help would be appreciated.

I appreciate this is a really old post, but having just experienced the same problem myself this afternoon (despite never having had a problem in the past with around 50 previous projects!) I thought I would post the solution I got to work.
Despite saving the image I wanted to use as a .png file with a transparent background, as soon as I imported it into iMovie and clicked the fill option (so that all of the image would appear), the black background reappeared. Doing a little research on the Internet, I discovered this was unavoidable because of how iMovie interprets the 'fit' and 'crop' commands, despite having a play with some of the settings within the 'Project Properties' window. I also tried re-sizing the water mark as suggested by someone on YouTube to match the 'picture in picture' box within iMovie, which is 175 x 85px but still no good! The image was also really poor quality, despite saving it using hi-res settings.
After tearing my hair out for the best part of 2.5 hours, I finally found a solution! The video I was working on had been recorded in HD and I work on a 16:9 wide screen (Mac book Pro 17" with retina display). The only way I could get my .png water marks to display correctly (without the black background) was to start with a blank canvas (using PS CS3) with the same dimensions (I used 1920 x 1080 and not 1440 x 990). Upon saving each file as a 24 bit .png and dropping it into iMovie using the 'picture in picture' option, they displayed correctly. If the image was too small because of it being placed on such a large background, I simply added the image, then cropped the background to suit.
I've never had to mess around with water marks like this before, but it seemed to do the trick???

  • Picture in Picture tool - Fit/ Crop/ Ken Burns - iMovie

I have added an image without a background on top of a clip using the Picture in Picture tool - selecting the 'Fit' option instead of the 'Ken Burns' option suddenly gives it a black background. I have successfully done this before so don't know what I'm missing this time.
Any help would be much appreciated.

you're trying to accomplish the 'transparent.png' trick ...
    as described e.g. here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21897581#21897581
prob is: when you just one time only apply fit or KB to that PiP, it is 'poisened'=the transparent areas are irreversible made to black.
so, a) erase the PiP from your Project timeline
    b)  in Project Properties, in the Timing tab, set "Initial Photo Placement" to "Crop"
    c) try again ...

  • How do you rotate picture in picture

I have a picture in picture and I would like to rotate the top video.  I  have figured out how to rotate it 90 degrees, but I don't want it  straight up and down.  I would like to rotate it like 45 degrees, so  that it is at a different angle than the background video.  Is there a  way to do this?  Or will it only rotate in increments of 90 degrees?  (I posted this in the wrong section before, so I hope this is the right place now.)

Here is my reply to this question, when asked in the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. If anyone has any comments on my method, or a better method, please add them.
    Welcoome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks forum, which is a repository for articles on how to do things in PrE and PrPro, and few will see your post here. Hopefully our tireless MOD, Steve Grisetti, will move the post out to the main forum.
As for Rotation, one of the fixed Motion Effects, like Scale and Position, you can first use the numerical box (to the far right in the Effects>Edit Effects (Effects Control Panel) and either click then type in a value, or click-scrub to change the value. This will be static for your PiP Clip.
If you wish to Rotate over time, you will want to Keyframe the Rotation Effect, and Rotate Right, or Rotate Left can be chosen. First, opposite Motion, click on the "stopwatch" icon, and you will then see stopwatches appear for all of the fixed Effects. In Rotation, first locate the CTI (Current Time Indicator w/ the red edit line) on the first Frame of your Clip. Click on the stopwatch besides Rotation to add the first Keyframe. Now, move to the last Frame (hitting PageDn, then one cursoe back arrow on the keyboard, will do that for you), and hit the Add Keyframe button on the far right of the Rotation line - looks like a yen-yang diamond, and adjust that Keyframe's value. Note: if you want multiple Rotations, beyond 360 degrees, that is possible, and you will see first a 1, then a 2 (for 2 revolutions).
Good luck, and hope that helps,
    Hunt
PS - Steve Grisetti has several great articles on Basic Keyframing on Muvipix.com, plus he's got several wonderful books on PrE, available there. Note: Muvipix, com is a multi-tier Web site, with the forum and some content available just for the free sign-up. Some of the material is available for purchase, or is all free with a subscription. It does not take many paid downloads, before one could have paid for a subscription.

  • How do you use green screen and picture in picture in iMoive at the same scene?

I understand how to do green screen and picture and picture... but how do you do it in the same sequence.. so when you are speaking with a background picture and you want to add a picture or a story within that picture... there has to be a way to do that..

That is a great idea! So I just do everything to the clip involving the green screen. Export it to, say my desktop. Then import it back into iMovie. Then I will be able to add a picture in picture? Fantastic! Thanks so much!

  • When I try to put a PNG watermark that I made myself into a "Picture in Picture" it just gives a black screen instead of the watermark

My channel is partnered with TGN. And they gave me a watermark. When I put the TGN watermark in it's fine, but when i put my custom watermark in I get a black screen.
Please help me. I am using Imovie 9.0.8 Macbook pro OS X 10.8.3

In the iMovie menu item File > Project Properties for Initial Photo Placement choose Crop - NOT Fit in Frame or Ken Burns (iMovie's default setting is Ken Burns). The latter 2 options will convert the .png image to a .jpg image.
If you've already placed the png image into the timeline as a Picture in Picture, you will need to delete it then change the preference setting to Crop. Then you can insert the png image.

  • Picture in Picture won't display in a preview of movie

I dragged a PNG file into the timeline and laid it over a background using Picture in Picture. It shows up in a special track with a blue box around it in the timeline. When I move the mouse over it, it previews correctly. If I play a preview with either play button (full screen or not) the picture I added doesn't show. Is this a bug or user error?

Same thing in iMovie '09 I just noticed. But it renders, so I guess who cares.

  • Where is the Picture-In-Picture function?

    Hi,
where can I find the Picture-In-Picture function in the new version of iMovie (10.0) ?
In iMovie '11 (9.0) I only had to drag the clip over another one and choose the "Picture in Picture" option. How can I do this in the new version?
I hope you can help me!

  • Second monitor Picture-in-Picture?

    Here's what I'm using:
    White Macbook 4,1 (2008)
    HDMI cable
    Mini DVI to HDMI adapter
    HDTV
I've been using the TV as a second monitor. I know how to mirror the displays too; that's not what I'm inquiring about.
I would like the second monitor (TV) to be a picture-in-picture on my laptop. It would be cool to have a small, windowed view of the second monitor's activity on my primary monitor. This way I can do my work and watch TV in the other room, while my roommates watch a movie on the big screen. (I have a crazy long HDMI cable)
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Dave

Sorry I do not know of any third party utility that can do that and of course there's noting in OSX to do that on its own.
Physically there is no way to get video in to your machine except maybe using one of the Elgato products.

  • Inner-HTML or Picture-in-Picture on iWeb, anyone?

Hi; dunno if you've use inner HTML code before (see code for this: <iframe src ="http://servalonline.com/Serval_Online/Video.html" width="100%" height="400"></iframe>) but basically is there anyway I can only select the lower half of the page I am trying to reference? The code above basically gives me half of the Video page from top to midway, but if I want only from midway to bottom, how do I do this? As in, I don't want to be able to scroll at all on the PIP (Picture in Picture) page. I want a fixed portion, as you see on a TV.
For more clarity, go to this page (My site's home page: http://servalonline.com/Serval_Online/Home.html)and see that the video of the day part of the page, on the home page, has the headers but I don't want the headers, as they are duplicates and already appear above, on the top of the main page; nor do I wanna be be able to scroll up or down. I want just a fixed insert. Any ideas?

first off, this posting system is wonky! I had to do do it three times!

yes, I started all and it's called webclip (as in dashboard), I can clip any part of a web page and display it; here your upper right video:
    http://temp.cyclosaurus.com/sharedYoutube/WebClip.html
it seems to me that you like to display the same video in multiple pages without duplicating the work.
if that's the case, then here is easier way:
    1) make a page with nothing but your video:
    http://temp.cyclosaurus.com/sharedYoutube/dailyVideo.html
    2) then display it in other pages using html snippet:
    http://temp.cyclosaurus.com/sharedYoutube/Home.html
    http://temp.cyclosaurus.com/sharedYoutube/Video.html
btw, this is the same concept as my navbar widget (build once and share all):
    http://www.cyclosaurus.com/Home/CyclosaurusBlog/Entries/2009/9/10iWeb_NavBarWidget.html
code is linked to all my sample.
