Picture quality poor when i make a movie using stills

Whenever i create a dvd movie using stills, the final product appears to lose quality. I.E. the pictures seem to shimmer and move for example a picture of a lake will look as though the lake is moving water rather than a still image. Any ideas on how to just keep it as a still image without parts of the photo appearing to shimmer or move.

Just another option that worked for me:
try creating the movie in iPhoto (turn off the background music feature, if it's still in 09; i was using 08) or even in Keynote. Then export/share as a quicktime movie and bring that into gargeBand for adding music tracks, then to iMovie for titling, then to iDVD
It may be a little convoluted, but the quality is better, imho.

When I rent a movie using Apple TV,it takes several hours to load. At this point, I opt to watch later. When I try to watch the movie, it starts loading again and tells me that it will be ready to watch in one hour forty four minutes. This can't be normal. Is there something I am doing wrong? Any suggestions.

If it's taking several hours then that is likely due to your internet connection. You can verify at speedtest.net
    6mbps required for instant 720P
    8mbps for 1080P
You can switch to SD in the settings (which only requires 3mbps)
You can also check istumbler or netstumbler for interference
Make sure you are on your ISPs DNS
The reloading is normal. There is no accessible storage on ATV. The small flash is used for caching streamed content, if you access other things or turn the device off it will be flushed.

Which version of 6? Check the slide quality, if it is at Low, push it to High or Optimized. Then uncheck all compression settings in Preferences, Project, SWF Size and Quality.

  • IDVD picture quality poor

When I burned a movie of photographs in iMovie06 to play on both computers and TV my movie looked lovely. Now in iMovie09 it looks bad. What am I doing wrong?
Once I burn the movie onto a DVD the picture flickers. I am frustrated by poor quality movies that I no longer want to share with friends and family. I love the new map features and enjoy using the Ken Burns effect but I am not proud of my finished projects anymore. Does anyone have a suggestion about this problem?
    I will appreciate your help.

    Kathy,
I assume you're talking about SD video? If so, download the free application MPEG Streamclip. Load your source video file there first, and do and "Export to Quicktime", which will create a Deinterlaced source file for iMovie 09 to work with that has the original quality from the source. iMovie 09 does throw away data on import. It is something I have reported to Apple and provided them with all the information to show what's happening. Until and unless they come up with a fix, you have to use either an older version of iMovie, or provide a different source to iMovie '09. The extra step through MPEG Streamclip is pretty painless and I can provide you with the parameters I use when setting up SD footage to be edited in iMovie '09.
    Jay S.
There's also an excellent PDF file available called "The Ins and Outs of iMovie '09" which does an excellent job of explaining how to get the best out of iMovie '09. It also talks to the issue of iMovie '09 throwing away every other line of data.

  • Photos loose their quality when I make a movie

I'm new to iMovies and I'm creating a movie from photos of a recent event. The photos my wife took are great looking and the size of each photo is 1.7mb. When I drag a photo into the time line viewer, it drags a small size version of the photo (117 kb) and looses so much quality. I thought this was just for the development portion and it would still be linked to the original photo, but when I export the photo to Quicktime or share it to iDVD, the quality is terrible.
Any enlightenment as to what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Poor quality video when I make a DVD

    Hi,
I've been very disapointed when making DVDs from HD footage.  I create a sequence in Premiere Pro CS5 and use the Dymnaic Link software to bring that sequence into Encore with out rendering it.  The sharpness and clarity are fine on the original footage but as soon as I make it into a DVD the output is always less sharp and less defined.  Now I understand it is reduced in definition when rendered for the DVD but if I buy a DVD and play it on a 65 inch high def TV it is almost as clear as a blue ray.  The stuff I make doesn't even look good on a 25 inch TV:(.
Can any one help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?
    thanx,
    Mel

What are the recommended settings in Sorenson Squeeze 6.5 for making transcoded files for Encore CS 5   SD DVDs?  Is this a good work around to the problem in this thread?
Also, anyone know why Squeeze has gone through multiple versions without being able to fix its Blu Ray encoding. A technician told me it was something to do with Encore, but that was it....

  • Quality of digital photos is poor when I make a DVD

I spent hours putting together a slide show of wedding photos set to music using Imovie. These are professional shots that are high quality digital stills. I used the Ken Burns effect on them as well. When I burned my DVD and played it on my television the quality is decreased. anything that is shiny (e.g. jewelery) sparkles and it looks quite odd. What did I do wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated

    msf,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
Your expectations of what you can get may be too high. NTSC video is 640x480 pixels AT BEST and there is no way you can match the quality of high resolution digital images viewed on a computer monitor of 1280x1024 (or higher) resolution on an NTSC TV screen.
See iDVD 6.0 Help - Preparing images for DVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/17.html for an idea of what to expect.
anything that is shiny (e.g. jewelery) sparkles and it looks quite odd.
This sounds like an interlacing effect - the image you see on a TV set (Frame) is actually made up of two separate images (Fields) each with half of the image scan lines. If parts of the two matching Fields are very different (like areas of high sharpness) these area of the image will seem to flicker

  • Image quality poor when using "fit in window" view

    Hello,
i´m getting familiar with PS CS3 Demo and what buffles me is the poor quality of the downsized view of large images. I loaded a 8 MP JPEG image from a digital camera and it looks good in 100%, but when i choose to view the whole image to fit the window (33,33% in my case), the resulting "downsampled" image is very jaggy and pixelated. I use a freeware image viewer called Xnview that gives me a far superior view when viewing large images downsized - i can even choose to select a "HQ" mode so those images get resampled to look better. It it normal that PS does not offer such a thing (or did i not see it?) and delivers such poor visual quality or is there something wrong with my PC?
    Thanks for your help.

Though 6.735, 12.5, 25 and 50% views usually are OK too. "Image quality" is great, though sometimes deceivingly so. I guess I don't understand sampling enough to tell you why 33% looks bad (rounding errors, I suppose). But 66% makes sense. You're trying to stuff 3 pixels into the space of 2.
Dave, what are the advantages to these nearest neighbor views instead of bicubic (or even bi-linear). Just speed?

  • Print quality poor when exporting tiff from Ai

I recently sent an Illustrator file to FedEx Office to be printed and it just didn't look great. What do I need to fix (other than getting a real printing company! ) in order to get a higher print quality?
    This is what I did:
Created a file in Illustrator then exported it as a tiff. (I needed it cropped and didn't like what I got by cropping it using the Pathfinder steps/options.)
Placed the tiff file in a new Illustrator file.
    Printed it as a pdf.
The pdf version of my illustration was horrid, so I had them print it from the Illustrator file. It was considerably better, but still had diagonal stripes (gradient) and vertical stripes (printing).
How can I remedy this problem?

    Clipping Mask
Draw a closed path over the objects you want to maswk or crop, in this case probably a rectangle using the rectangle tool.
then select all the objects and the shape to be used as a mask.
    then go to Object>Clipping Mask>Make
BTW Scott's answer shouldbe marked as the answer.

  • Why is the photo quality poor when view on TV?

Before I burn a slideshow on a dvd I check to see the quality of my images and they look perfect on my mac however, the quality is greatly reduced when I watch a photo slideshow on a TV. This has occurred for one than 1 tv also (all pretty new).
Any suggestions as to why this is happening?
    Thanks.

Are you using high resolution images? If so, try lowering the resolution. Or try an app that specializes in iDvd slideshows.

  • Missing last frame of my movie when compressor makes QT movie???

    Hello again everyone,
I was compressing movies just fine, trying to figure out what is best compression for my movie when all of a sudden compressor made my last frame of my movie disappear! It shows it in the preview window but not in the batch window preview, and not when it actually compresses. Do I have to re-capture, or add a frame in FCP one frame more to compensate???
    Anyone...

    Thanks for your response.
Forgive me, please, but what is ide?
I guess I should retrace steps a bit.
I created an fla of my primary clip. It's actually 1428 frames.
The last frame has the action: gotoAndPlay("loop start"); (I forgot I'd changed the frame number to a label)
Frame 290 on this fla timeline has the frame label: loop start
It works as expected when exported as .swf.
When I put the primary movie .swf inside of the preloader movie clip's .fla on the third frame of the content layer, and export that .fla as an .swf, that's when I notice the actionscript of the primary movie clip is gone.
Am I right in believing you can nest .swfs and keep actions?
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • What is the av-1 file that is created when I make Quicktime Movies from FCP

I have just experienced the -av1 phenomena for the first time.
I have been exporting to QT movies regularly using the same internal and external drives for months - no changes, no incorrect formatting. I have used those exported movies to create One-Step DVDs in iDVD for display and distribution. This -av1 file thing is keeping me from doing that.
The only diff with this project (and, in fact, it's a new Sequence in a Project that has successfully been exported (without the companion file)) is that this sequence had .aiff music files some of which were from iTunes (downloaded/protected).
I thought that might be the problem, so I created mp3s (by burning to disk and re-importing) and replaced the aiff's in the timeline - it still insisted on creating -av1 files with the QT Movie.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

It means that the drive that you are saving these to is formatted FAT32 and has a file size limit of 2GB. Check the file sizes and see.
If the drive was formatted MacOS Extended you won't see this issue.

  • I have tried for two months to make a movie using video and stills.  It is fine in the timeline but then when I burn a disc the stills stick and just keep coming back and covering everything else.  I turned the jpegs into Tiffs, then compressed with LZW

I am a beginner but I have made good movies on other programs in the past.  I must be doing one basic thing wrong.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
