Picture Style Differs In Camera vs Computer

I've been using my 60d for a few years now with no problems. However on my last shoot the images are drastically different when viewed on my camera's LCD vs on my computer. I shot everything RAW using a custom neutral color profile, same as I always have. In camera everything looks good and neutral, low saturation, even shadows and highlights, but after downloading the images they appear high in contrast and saturation with very dark shadows.
Even when viewing the images in the EOS utility they look correct like they do in camera, but after downloading they still become dark and saturated. I've attached a screenshot that shows the difference between the image in the EOS Utility vs Finder (sorry for the small image size but that's as large as EOS Utility will show the image). Any idea as to what's going on here and if I can get the downloaded images to look like they were in camera?

So you're saying that there will always be a difference between the JPG and RAW, and I understand that. But you also agree that the difference I'm seeing is way more drastic than that. The contrast is way too high for a normal RAW image.
Yes, it seems higher than normal, but:
1) The image on the right looks heavily under contrasted and under saturated, at least on my monitor.  If your in-camera custom settings has reduced these (i.e. moved contrast and saturation to less than 0), then this would be expected.  If you want your RAW photo to look that way simply move down contrast and sat.  Better than contrast though is to manipulate the highlights and shadows.
2) In really contrasty situations (e.g. direct sunlight, as this looks to be), the RAW files can actually look more contrasty than the jpg because the jpg has made adjustments to lower highlights and boost shadows.  As I mention above, you can adjust this to the RAW as well.
One thing I think you should take away from this is: use your shadow and highlights adjustments.  They're the first two things I go to.  The highlight and shadow recovery is why I shoot in RAW, it's why I use a full frame sensor.  The recovery is awesome on a full frame.  It still makes me smile when I pull detail out of a blank white highlight.
As to your specific issue, it's hard to diagnose because I'm not familiar with EOS Utility.  It's one of the three things I've mentioned in these posts, probably a combination of them:
You're comparing a JPG with reduced contrast/sat to the RAW
You're in a highly contrast situation
EOS Utility may be applying presets (namely contrast) to the RAW on import (check the contrast setting)
My solution would be to not even use EOS Utility.  Download your files from your card, and open them directly in Photoshop (PS will use Adobe Raw Converter on import which will allow you to choose your shadows, highlights, contrast, sat, etc), or directly into Bridge.  Compare how that looks.  If you like the desaturated look of the photo on the right that is very easy to do, start with highlights and shadows.
And finally, my ultimate solution, is to buy Adobe Lightroom.  I really, really, really try to not recommend that people just buy stuff to fix their problems.  But Lightroom is a remarkable piece of software, and it's rather cheap these days.  It makes all this discussion pointless.  Open in RAW in Lightroom and shuffle sliders around until you're happy.  Then just cut n paste those mods to the rest of the photos you took that day.  Done.

  • Importing from camera into lightroom with camera picture styles in tact (camera neutral)

I use the Camera Neutral picture style on my Canon 5D mark ii when shooting landscape photogtraphy.  I would like my photos to remain Camera Neutral when I import them.  However, Lightroom always defaults the photos to Adobe Standard.  Is there any way to make this not happen?  I am fairly new to lightroom (used for 5 months) and would really appreciate the help as I am trying to import 16 gigs of Wallowa Mountain photogtraphy, and do not want to change each photo manualy.

If you always want Camera Neutral picture style to be applied, then open one of your images that you have imported and have changed nothing else in Lightroom.  Set the camera profile to Camera Neutral and save new camera default settings.  Then whenever you import that setting will be applied to all of your images.
If you don't always want that style, you could save a preset that applies the Camera Neutral picture style, and then you could choose to use that preset during the import process.
It is simply a matter of determining your workflow and then setting things the way you want them to work.

  • How can you share picture between different user on one computer

I am trying to move pictures from one user I photo to another user on the same computer but not sure how to do it can anyone help?

    Just the Photos?
Export from one user (File -> Export) to the FInder. Drag the images to the Users/Shared folder. Change user and then import from there.
    Or use iPhoto Sharing:
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
Enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.

I like using a picture style or a preset as a starting point.
A picture style IS a camera profile, Adobe added the default picture styles of DPP in LR, why not adding these other ones ?
Because it would be a lot of work and you can already add them yourself using the DNG Profile Creator.
The Camera Calibration panel as you already know, gives you the basic Canon picture styles and as Lee Jay pointed out you can create your own with DNG profile creator.
You can also make Presets using the other develop settings to duplicate look of Picture styles if you like. Though using calibration presets does a better job of getting the fundamental colours right, but as you can include them in Presets you can mix and match to your heart's desire.
I have to say after looking at the rather small Canon examples, with some of them it was hard to discern much if any difference and with others, they are easy to reproduce by making your own LR presets.

  • Are custom picture styles recognized in LR5?

I use a custom picture style when shooting to get a flat look for post editing. In Lightroom 5, under Camera calibration, which profile do i select to use MY CUSTOM picture style: adobe standard, camera faithful, camera landscape, camera neutral , camera portrait,  camera standard?

Rob is correct.  Aside from a couple of exceptions (*), Lr doesn't use the in-camera settings as the starting point for image edits in Develop.  Your best bet here is to customize your Develop settings in Lr to get your images close to how you like them to appear, then save that as your custom defaults (e.g., in Develop, choose Develop menu -> Set Default Settings...).  That way all future images (for this camera model) imported into Lr will get your preferred settings as the starting point.
(*)  The exceptions are white balance, as Rob pointed out, and (for some camera models) the crop aspect ratio.

  • Apert. fixes/messes with picture style when loading.

Hi, Im using a canon rebel Xti. and I love using aperture except for the fact that it changes my picture style and many other things to its own standard when it loads from my card. I can see in the preview its a totally different images, then it loads onto my computer and when i click it by the next load the image is fixed in aperture's style. When i load it with other photo programs, the pictuer style stays. Anyone know how to let aperture know I want to be HANDS OFF my image until I can do the fixing? Seriously the image looks completely different with lighting exposure etc

when shooting RAW, the camera captures as is ... the picture style info is a set of instructions that canon's dpp software uses to translate the image ... this is the only program i am aware of that will use this proprietary info, which other programs read it for you ???
RAW images are raw data ...
aperture reads your RAW, not canon's instructions ...
so technically, aperture is HANDS OFF your image, you are trying to add adjustments with the picture styles ...
the preview is the embedded jpg that the camera creates for teh thumbnail, etc ...
what are the "many other things" it changes ???

  • Need picture style control for photo and video wit...

Lumia 1020 stands for its excellent phone camera. But I am very disappointed with its JPG output. The whitle balance is always a big problem, then too much contrast and oversaturation. True, the photo is crystal sharp, but who needs a bad color photo with great sharpness?
After Lumia Black, the DNG format comes. Now I cannot shoot without it. So I just find the 1020 is really great, but the built-in processing destorys all.
I don't know about other phone camera, but just look at the iphone's. Thanks to its great overall JPG output quality, keep much more details, so people love to use post-fx apps in their phone to make good-looking photos. Then 1020 for me, I just have to live with the DNGs instead of easy sharing.
808 Pureview has all the picture style control funtion, even in video !!  Down the contrast sharpness and saturation, then the semi-CineStyle is coming! Look at the 1020's video sample, it is a shame.
All I want to say is: Can you (I don't know to call Nokia or Microsoft) make some control opitions like 808 or just low down the over contrast/saturation/sharpness photo and video. I don't wanna see a such amazing sensor and lens camera like this terrible.

In very general terms, the requirements for Video will exceed those for Photoshop (PS). If you are looking at PrPro CS5, then the video card WILL make a difference, and PS CS5 now takes advantage of the video card, than before.
For PS, the minimum HDD setup would be a 2x system with physical (not partitions) HDD's. Video has more requirements in this area, and I would say that a 3x setup is the minimum. Do read Harm's linked article, as it is the best that I have ever run across.
For the PS setup, just locate the Scratch Disks for PS on your extra HDD's, the ones with your Project and PrPro Scratch Disks.
Enjoy the new computer, and welcome to the forum,

  • Canon EOS400d 'Picture Styles' & RAW

Can someone please clarify whether or not using different Picture Styles when shooting has any impact on the camera's RAW file, and consequently affects what can be tweaked when processing with Aperture?
Also, what exactly is being 'boosted' in the RAW fine tuning adjustments panel....?

In your opinion, am I losing anything by processing
RAW with Aperture as opposed to using Canon's own DPP
software (which I think just doesn't cut the mustard)
    or even ACR with Photoshop?
Not a lot, apart from the vignetting and chromatic abberation correction in ACR.
    I actually shoot with a
modified 'standard' style, but from what you are
saying, if I'm using Aperture, this won't matter -
presumably the picture styles only affect how the
    400d processes JPEGs in-camera. Correct?
If you set a picture style for a RAW file, DPP will process it to look like the equivalent JPEG, while Aperture should give a result similar to the picture style set to unmodified standard.
I tried using CaptureOne LE which is actually quite a
nice utility (especially as it was free with some CF
cards!) but it doesn't have the capabilities or ease
    of use that Aperture has.
C1 is good, even the LE version, but it doesn't really have any cataloguing features or an easy workflow.

  • Preserve Canon Picture Styles

Is it possible to setup Lightroom so that when it first reads my pictures from my Canon 5D it doesn't apply any of the Lightroom preset processing but instead apply whatever in-camera preset I may have selected using the well known Canon Picture Styles.
Note that when I first import the pictures form my 5D into Lightroom before doing the first loading, the picture is showed with the settings that was taken in-camera, but as soon as the loading is complete, the Lightroom preset is applied and I loose all my in-camera presets. So that makes me believe that Lightroom can read those in-camera presets so I'm just looking for a way of avoiding it to over write them automatically.
    Any idea if that's possible?
    Thanks

I think the main problem Richard is the extreme difficulty (at least for me who doesnt want to spend to much time on the technical side) in coming up with a preset that provides consistent results for all the pictures, whatever the conditions in which there are captured.
In DPP the "landscape" style provides great Velvia results consistently for pictures taken in any kind of light. So in terms of colour rendition, the main adjustments required are usually WB and that's all.
So I believe the main problem with LR, ACR or the like, is to come up with such consistent preset.
Personally, I always look for the best quality in all my pictures so RAW is a must, especially for fine art printing. And although RAW provides us with this advantage of more freedom in the processing of our photos, the main problem for me is that since I've gone digital 3 years ago, my time in the field has significantly gone down and been replaced by countless hours on the computer solving quite difficult technical problems.
The camera and software manufacturers are really enjoying all this as it provides them with huge opportunities for selling products. But as for photographers that means they need to be more than that, i.e. software and computer "gurus" too! and I'm not sure we have the time for that (I don't anyway and I'd rather spend that time out there taking photos).

  • Match Colors (Picture Styles) for D7100

    Hello Everyone,
i am fairly new to Aperture and developing RAW Files. I´m currently testing out different RAW Converters and are between chairs on Lightroom and Aperture.
This far i like the workflow and handling of Aperture much better despite on thing.
While shooting JPEGs on my Nikon D7100 i like the colors set to Picture Style Neutral best and Lightroom does have Camera Calibration with this Colorset already matched perfectly. Aperture does display colors very differently. I tried to match colors manually and save it as a preset. So far without success.
Color reproduction could make the edge and i would prefere Aperture if i managed to get the colors right. How could i make a own Colorpreset "Neutral" in Aperture. Playing with the Color Brick didn´t work. I guess because i where doing it wrong.
    Thank you,
    Christian

    Sorry, nevermind.
I just found a Thread discussing the exact same thing.
Seems like it is not that easy.

  • LR working w Canon RAW with Picture Style

    Hi there,
I LOVE LR, like it workflow & retouching but... i very confuse recently with LR
I know LR can't "read" those picture style setting...one day, i tested Canon 5DMKII raw Canon DPP vs LR, sigh....Canon is much better I do think, color in LR is not so good enogh
any comment n idea to deal with raw in LR,
    superb appreciate!
    Teddy

I shoot Canon but have never experimented much with Picture Style settings.  But looking at my camera's Field Guide Book, it says that Picture Styles make adjustments in Tone Curve and Color Saturation.  In the Landscape Picture Style specifically, the book suggests the camera also adjusts Color Temperature for greens and blues.
There's no foolproof automatic, one-click way to get the exact same effect as you'd get with a Picture Style in LR, of course, but you can experiment in Develop Mode.  You should be able to come close. In fact, you should be able to find more nuanced adjustments that look even better to you, with some practice.
In most cases, rather than adjust the Color Saturation slider in LR, try the Vibrance slider first.  (I would slide Vibrance to the right a bit to duplicate in LR's Develop mode what Canon's DPP is doing in these shots.)
To adjust color temperature in LR, you can experiment with the various presettings found when clicking the arrow to the right of "As Shot," or in the second shot, by clicking the eyedropper icon to the left of "WB" and then clicking something purely white (the left subject's jacket, or a white part of a cloud).  More nuanced adjustments can be made with the Temp and Tint sliders.  It appears to me that in the first shot, Canon's selecting a slightly warmer color temp (higher Temp number) than you set in LR, and in the second shot, Canon's selecting a slightly cooler color temp (lower Temp number) than you are in LR. You could try those adjustments in LR and see if you agree.
I would avoid using the Brightness or Contrast sliders or the Tone Auto button in LR to adjust the tone curve, and instead experiment with three other ways LR's Develop mode can help you adjust the tone curve in a more nuanced way.  One is to position the LR cursor in the Histogram so you get a double-sideways arrow icon, and drag the bars left and right, particularly near the two sides of the histogram, until the tone curve extends to each end of the histogram without lighting up either of the triangles in the two upper corners of the histogram.
A different way to adjust the tone curve in LR is to start by moving the Exposure slider so that the overall exposure looks correct.  For these two shots, the histogram will be highest in the middle if the Exposure slider is set correctly.  (With a nighttime scene or other predominantly dark shot, of course, you want the histogram highest on the left side, not balanced in the middle.) Then, if the histogram does not extend all the way to the left of the graph, move the Blacks slider to the right until the triangle in the upper left lights up, then reduce the Blacks slider just until that triangle goes dark again.  Then, if the triangle in the upper right corner of the histogram is lit, move the Recovery slider higher just until the upper right corner triangle goes dark.  (If that triangle is already dark, leave the Recovery slider at 0.) Finally, you can move the Fill Light slider if you want to decrease contrast, as in your second shot, make the shadows a bit lighter.  Otherwise, leave it at 0. Some photographers would, and some wouldn't.  Others would just say, don't take a shot like that in harsh midday light if you have a choice, but not everybody can wait around for a week until the light is perfect!
The third way to adjust the tonal curve in LR is to scroll down in Develop mode and manipulate Tone Curve in various ways.  You can drag the sliders in the Tone Curve graph, click points on the graph and drag them up or down, or move the sliders under the Tone Curve.  Both your shots appear to me to have slightly lower levels on the dark side of the graph, as if Canon's DPP had pulled LR's Darks and Shadows sliders slightly left.  But you'll have to experiment.  And this is why it's best not to use Brightness and Contrast in LR, particularly in the second shot, but instead use the Tone Curve or Histogram sliders, because you don't want to affect the contrast everywhere in the shot to get the effect DPP is getting; you want to adjust the contrast specifically in just the darker or shadowed areas.
Finally, are you using a hardware to device to calibrate your monitor?  If your prints are not matching what you see displayed in Lightroom, particularly in color and contrast, and you haven't tried a monitor calibrator (hardware, not just software with eyeball adjustments), I'd suggest trying one.  Don't just plug it in and use it, read and follow all the instructions carefully.  Otherwise it may not help or may even make things look worse.

  • Canon landscape picture style

Hi, when I import a raw file from a canon camera into Aperture, the colors looks different to the ones that appers on Canons's softwares and as the pixture apear in-camera. I like to acomplish the canon landscape picture style as starting point to modify my pictures. I found some equivalent presents: http:/http://maccreate.myshopify.com/products/aperture-3-presets-canon-picture-s tyles-1 but it seems the page is not working, does anyone know another web page where to buy it? or does anyone know an aproximation how Canon set the landscape colors in order to create my own equivalent Aperture preset?
      Thanks!

I have been trying that, but when I choose any standard canon's property picture style, the Canon Picture Style Editor does not show what were the parameters that changed, it just changes the colors on the picture but not the color profile controls. But you're right, at the end, I'll have to somehow copy the colors profiles, saturation, etc by just making an eye comparasion. In the midtime, the Keith Barkley'ssuggestion looks reasonable. Thanks for your time.

I can not figure out how to down load pictures from my phone to my computer, if I sync it it wants to bring all my pictures from my computer to my phone. I' am trying to clear the pics out of my phone. Thanks

The Camera Roll on the phone identifies itself as a Digital Camera to your computer. You don't sync them as you do everything else with iTunes.
You get them off as you would any digital camera.
You don't say what type of computer you have so instructions are different depending on that.
