Pictures edited in iPhoto look different in other applications

I'm running iLife '08 on my new iMac with Leopard 10.5.2
In iPhoto '08 (updated to 7.1.3) I do the following:
1) Import a picture to the library and double click it to zoom in.
2) This shows lots of imperfections, so I click on Edit and touch up the picture, then click done.
3) The next time I double click the picture to zoom in, the imperfections are still there, but if I click on edit the changes I applied at step 2 become visible.
4) If I export the photo and view in, say Preview, or choose send to iDVD, the resulting image has a lot more imperfections than the image shown in edit mode in iPhoto.
Why do my photos look so much better when viewed in iPhoto edit mode than when viewed in iDVD or Preview?

Hi,
thanks for responding. I tried both of your suggestions, but no change unfortunately.
If you look at the two photos uploaded here (captured via Grab), the first shows the picture post-editing (i.e. from iPhoto whilst not in edit mode, or from another app such as Preview or iDVD). The second shows the photo as it displays whilst in iPhoto's edit mode. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Can iphoto '9 read pictures edited in iphoto '11

I recently took some pictures for a family member.  I have iPhoto '11 and they have iPhoto '9.  I edited and burned these pics onto a DVD for her.  She can't seem to pull them up in iPhoto '9.  So the question is, can you view pics in iPhoto '9 that were edited in iphoto '11?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes iPhoto 09 can certainly view pics edited in 11, but it can't read the 11 Library.
So, if you burned these to DVD using iPhoto's 'Share -> Burn'command, what you've done is burn a mini iPhoto library to disk.
Try export the pics: File -> Export to a folder on the desktop, then burn that folder to disk with the Finder.

  • Iphoto library incompatibility with other applications

Don't like the way iphoto hogs all the images in iphoto library and does not allow other applications to browse or use the images. Do we have to have two photo archives (pictures and iphoto library) if we want to use more effective photo editing software. i.e.. edit from pictures folder then import into iphoto? Thus using up double the amount of disk space.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. To use 3rd party editing software seamlessly with iPhoto see the following:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
You can use this method with any 3rd party editor except for the saving part which is unique to PS and PSE.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I write a cluster of an array to a file that can be looked at with other applications?

I have a cluster of array that are different data types. How do I write this to a file, so that other applications can read it, i.e. notepad etc?

Each elements of the array has a cluster of different data. It is unbundled and separated by a comma , then converted to a string. It is indexed out to a CSV array and then written to a spreadsheet file. The spreadsheet file reads it and outputs a CSV array. This is then going into for loop to reassemble the string output to its original clustered data representation. The iterations puts the clusters back into the array at the correct indexed position.hint: the for loop is the key to manipulating the array data...this VI is like an egg to a chicken and chicken to an egg, whatever came first?

  • Picture w/FCP Motion looks different in canvas

Hi- I'm trying to scale and pan using the FCP motion tab. It looks right in the viewer, but in the canvas, the scaling and panning is off. Both are on 100% and conform aspect ratio is turned off in the canvas is unchecked. Have done this effect many times, and never had this problem. Any ideas??

In the picture below there are 5 blue keyframes
The black keyframes on the bottom depict different locations that the image moves on the screen
The green keyframes in the middle show in order scale at 100% at 50% and at 150%
If your image stays at 100% scale the entire time then the green line should be a straight line with no keyframe marks whatsoever

  • Pulling pictures out of iphoto for web sites other then Facebook, how to do

I cannot figure out where iphoto stores its photo as I publish photos and its always looking for photos in a area that I tell it to go to ('ie pictures and then the name) but I cannot figure this one out on iphoto
any help out there would be greatly appreciated !

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Why are pictures edited on iMac looking "warmer" than on a PC?

I am a photographer and bought the 27" iMac along with Photoshop CS5 in order to edit pictures and post them on the web.  After my first edit/post, I immediately noticed that the pictures I edited on the Mac looked perfect on the Mac and printed well from the Mac, but looked horrible...much "cooler" or "bluer"...when viewed on a PC.  How do I correct this problem??  Do the display/color profiles need to tweak on the Mac and/or Photoshop?

How are you viewing the pictures on your iMac? editor? preview? Browser? which browser?
How are you viewing the pictures on the PC? Windows Viewer? Browser? which browser?
Do other PCs show the pictures as cool/blue?
If your picture prints the way you want it , I would be happy with that. Have you sent a picture to be printed at a commercial place (costco etc) and was it satisfactory?

  • After saving as jpeg images sometimes look different in other programs or online.

Any ideas how to get more consistent results would be appreciated.

If every application and system were properly color-managed it would be possible to get consistent color everywhere.
As it is, that's simply not the case.
Many folks feel that publishing an image in the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 profile is the best approach.  There is debate about whether to publish a profile in the image to identify to systems/browsers that have proper color-management that it is using that profile - my opinion is that you should do so.
If you have a wide-gamut monitor that doesn't closely emulate the sRGB profile, and assuming you have it calibrated and profiled, you will see different things when you display an sRGB image using a fully color-managed application (e.g., Photoshop), a partially color-managed application (e.g., Internet Explorer), or a non-color-managed applications (e.g., an older viewer application).  That is to be expected.
The various browsers implement different levels of color-management.  I mentioned that IE only does half the job - it interprets image color profiles, but it assumes every monitor is sRGB regardless of its profile.  Firefox can do a full job of color-management, even including non-image web page element color-management, but it takes reconfiguration to do so.  Safari only does image color-management, not web page elements.  Last I looked Chrome ignored color-management entirely.
Create your image in the sRGB color-space, trust what you see on your calibrated and profiled system when the image is displayed in Photoshop - i.e., make the colors look right there - and make your own choice about whether to publish with the sRGB profile embedded.  That's about the best you can do.

  • Layout looks different on other computers

hi. i published my website through iweb 09 and i've noticed on other computers that the layout and fonts are different. how can i fix this?

Make sure you're using Web Safe Fonts.  Otherwise any computers that don't have the font you used installed will substitute a different font which will change the look of the page entirely.
What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?

  • IPhoto Not Recognised in Other Applications

    Hi there,
I really need help here and step-by-step guidance would really be appreciated.
First, I saw the article relating to this on the website and it didn't solve the problem (new xml file).
Originally I had iLife 2006 installed and I upgraded to iLife 2008. No problems prior to the upgrade.
Now, in iMovie, for example, I can no longer access my iPhoto library, it is greyed-out and inaccessible. I am using 10.4.10 with the latest iLife updates, iPhoto is 7.1, (v347).
Upon reading other posts it seems I should make a back-up of the iPhoto library. Please assist me by providing details on how to safely accomplish this.
Thanks so much in advance. Any help and guidance is very much appreciated.
    Lynn

    Lynn:
You're referring to accessing iPhoto via the Media browser in iMovie and other iApps, right. Try the following:
1 - delete the following preference files:
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
Also the preference file for the other iApps that can't see iPhoto.
These are located in your User/Library/Preferences folder
2 - launch iPhoto first, then iMovie and iDVD.
See if that will jump start the Media Browser.

  • Imported photos slow to appear in iphoto for upload by other applications

I've noticed a lag in photos being available for import from iphoto (via Safari or Chrome).
The photos are being imported from an iphone 5.
It takes several minutes and several restarts of iphoto before I can see the imported photos in my iphoto library.

Sounds like your database file has been damaged.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Edits look different on mobileme gallery

    Hi there
I have just posted some photos on a mobileme gallery after doing some minor edits - but they look different, and not right! Too bright, etc etc Have other people had this problem? Will it be a problem for prints and photobooks? Not sure why they looked so good in Aperture and so rubbish on the gallery!

When I view the gallery in Aperture they are great - look exactly how I edited them. Its only whne I go via the web that they look washed out and horrible.
I'm still getting used to Aperture so I'm not 100% sure about the versions. I've been editing photos and all that is visible is the edited version, so that's what I've selected. (presumably it must be stacked with the original because I don't see the original separately?)

  • Exported pictures look different when uploaded to websites.

I noticed that exported pictures from Lightroom  uploaded to Facebook or Shutterfly look different that when viewing the same exported pictures on my pc. Why is that?  The exported pictures were not adjusted, maybe only cropped and red eyes were removed. Yet the colors appear different when viewing the same pictures on Facebook or in Shutterfly.  If I upload exact the same picture directly from my picture folder, the colors look different. I wonder why this is happening.

Export as sRGB will always help; however most browsers are not colour managed so the colour reproduction can vary anyway even when using sRGB. Only Safari is fully managed, Firefox works up to a point (it only uses icc v2 profiles, not v4 it will be OK with LR as LR presently exports to the v2 version of sRGB) or browsers don't honour profiles at all. Calibrating your monitor is also an important factor here and a hardwear device is required to do this correctly.
How an image looks in non colour managed applications cannot be a basis for jusdging an image so only fully colour managed applications (such as LR or PS) should ever be used for processing.

  • Why do iPhoto folders look different on iPad?

Why do iPhoto folders look different on the iPad?  When I launch the Photos app on the iPad you get a list of photos and photo albums that I have synced from my laptop.  All is fine.  However...
The photo albums are in a different order.....I can't see name or tag data with the folders .... impossible to search for specific pictures by name......Mainly, the entire interface is so different.  Instead of simple vertical list of photo albums (as on the Mac or the iPhone, iPod,  the iPad presents you with an array of those graphic-image photo piles -- the ones where the first picture in the album is shown on top, etc.
Does this bother anyone else? Anyway to make photos and photo albums on the iPad more closely resemble the photo/album list you see on the Mac?
    David in KC

The Photos app on the iPad is just a basic photo viewer and isn't as sophisticated as iPhotos on the Mac and has limited functionality. Third-party apps will probably give you more of the functionality that you mention, but you can't change the Photos app.
