Pictures folder in finder vs iphoto library

Is there a resource designed to help me navigate the difference between the pictures folder in the finder screen vs the iphoto library? I am having a hard time keeping track of where my pictures are being stored. I have tried dragging files from one file to the other, but then it claims that they are unreadable. Any ideas?
Thanks,

finton
Is there a resource designed to help me navigate the difference between the pictures folder in the finder screen vs the iphoto library?
Yes, it's called iPhoto
I am having a hard time keeping track of where my pictures are being stored.
You don't have to.
iPhoto is a database. The idea is that you do all your work in the iPhoto Window and leave iPhoto to manage those file in the iPhoto Library Folder. There are no user-serviceable parts in the iPhoto Library Folder and you are really best staying out of there. Put another way:
+It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss+
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Finally, as an fyi:
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.

  • "my pictures" folder in finder vs iphoto library

I noticed many (not all) of my photos in the "pictures" folder in the finder.  I think they're dups of what I have nicely organized in iphoto.  Can I delete the photos in the Pictures folder without disturbing the photos in iphoto?
I guess what I'm wondering is if iphoto automatically copies photos to the Pictures folder?  Did I place them there intentionally?  I always import photos from my camera directly to iphoto.  Where do photos "live" on mac?
    Thank you very much.

1 - iPhoto never puts any photo anyplace except in the iPhoto library so any photo anyplce else (like the pictures folder) was not put there by iPhoto but by you
2 - assuming that you are using a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state) then you can delete any photo not in the iPhoto library
I guess what I'm wondering is if iphoto automatically copies photos to the Pictures folder?
No - it never copies photo anyplace except to the iPhoto library
Did I place them there intentionally?
Someone did - iPhoto does not
I always import photos from my camera directly to iphoto.
    Both this and

can not be true - the photos in your pictures folder were not put there by iPhoto

  • Thinning Pictures Folder to Match the iPhoto Library

    Hi everyone,
The folder for my "iPhoto library" folder is 6.63GB and the size of my actual library in iPhoto is 4.8GB. There's a lot of ancient pictures and movies that I thought I had deleted that are still around, obviously. How can I quickly delete the excess and keep what I'm using without going through manually?
I need the space and would really appreciate an answer. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers!

    Keegan
There's a lot of ancient pictures and movies that I thought I had deleted that are still around, obviously.
Are you able to see any of the photos that you think are still around and that you thought you had deleted?
The folder for my "iPhoto library" folder is 6.63GB and the size of my actual library in iPhoto is 4.8GB.
Where do you get 4.8GB as the size of your actual library? Is this your iPhoto Library package inside your Pictures folder?
Is the 6.63GB your Pictures folder?
How can I quickly delete the excess and keep what I'm using without going through manually?
If you are considering deleting files from within the iPhoto Library package then don't, this would have serious effects on the working of iPhoto.
When we hear from you we will provide further information.

  • I can't find my iPhoto library???

Well it all started when I plugged in my backup drive (western digital 1TB drive) to do a time machine backup and it said the drive had to be erased and reformatted because there was a problem ( i have been using this drive for a year with Time Machine). So i completely erased the drive and plugged it in to do a new backup. it took about four hours to complete. After it was done i plugged in my phone to upload all my pictures to my iPhoto (because I did not want to do it while backing up) and iPhoto told me to pick a library to start using iPhoto and i freaked out because I had over 5000 pictures saved on that library. I tried doing a system search for the file and could't find it. I know i'm 100% sure that the library was not saved on the drive because i could open the library without the drive plugged in. I called apple and they told me to call them back when i have another mac (not sure why) and i have been playing phone tag with them and have not yet talked to them, but they told me i might have to pay for data recovery but why should I have to pay if it isn't my fault that they are gone. Any idea how to find the library, if its possible or did i loose 5000 pics???

Mmm, strange. If you've been adding photos to iPhoto they have hopefully been saved in the iPhoto library.
Have a look in this location and tell us if this file exists and what size it is (if it's got lots of photos in it it should be large-ish):
Click on the desktop and do Command+N to open a new Finder window. Click on your Home folder (the House) and then, to the right of the window double click on the Pictures folder to open it. Is there a file called 'iPhoto Library' and what size is it. As I say, if it's got some pics in it it will likely be quite a large file and would indicate that your pictures are there.
Re-launch iPhoto holding down the Option key as I mentioned in my first post and click on the 'Other Library' and navigate your way to this 'iPhoto Library' file located in your Pictures folder. Select the 'iPhoto Library' file and hopefully you'll be back in business.
Apologies if I've put it in simple terms, but you said you're new to Mac .

  • I want to copy my iPhoto library to an external drive but I cannot find the folder on my Mac Air. When I open Finder there is no Picture folder showing so I cannot find the iPhoto library.

I want to copy my iPhoto library to an external drive but I cannot find the folder on my Mac Air. When I open Finder there is no Picture folder showing so I cannot find the iPhoto library.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide ~/Pictures/ as the path. If that doesn't work, control-click a photo in iPhoto, show it in the Finder, and Command-click the folder's name in the window's title bar to find the path.

    Hi jamesxio,
Do you still have the Pictures folder in your home folder? If not, create a new folder in your home folder and name it Pictures. Make sure the iPhoto Library folder is in the Pictures folder.
Now launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed until you get a message screen. Choose to open another library and navigate to and highlight the iPhoto Library folder. Click the Open button.
You didn't move anything around or rename anything in the iPhoto Library folder in the finder, did you?

  • Can't find my iphoto library folder in finder

    Hi Everyone,
I bought a Macbook Pro a few months ago and am having trouble with my iphoto.
              1. I can't see or find the iphoto library photo in finder so that I may access my photos without actually opening iphoto
              2. on my old macbook i could drag a photo from my iphoto library to the desktop and that would simply create a copy. If I do this with my new mac it transfers the photo out of iphoto to my desktop.
Any suggestions on how i can fix these 2 things, particularly the first one?
    THANK YOU!

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

Where do I find my iPhoto library in the latest operating system?

Where do I find my iPhoto library in the latest operating system?
In the folder you selected, when you created the iPhoto Library. By default the library is called "iPhoto Library.photolibrary" and in the Pictures folder, like Barry Hemphill pointed out, but you could have selected a different folder.
iPhoto '11 can tell you the path to the library: Ctrl-click the title "iPhoto" in the title bar of the iPhoto application window. You will see the path to the current iPhoto library in the drop down menu:

    1. What disk are they talking about?
    2. I can access my photos by clicking on ALL IMAGES in SEARCH FOR.
    3. If I trash iphoto and re-install from my Install Disc 1, will I lose the photos?
    4. If so, what can I do to save my photos and get iPhoto working?
I have an iMac with 10.6.8.

    What version of iPhoto?
Is there an iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder?

This is the message I get when I try to open iphoto.
    1. this is the first time since I've used iphoto that this has happened.
    2. I would like to know why.
    3. I am not sure which choice to make.
    4. recent changes involving photos would be deleting several photos....I used a program called Grand Perspective and began to delete photos from there
    5. although I'm interested in fixing this problem, I would like to learn more about 'libraries' and the way iphoto works. Previous to owning a Mac, I used Picasa with my pc and I don't remember it using as much space on my hard drive. iphoto has a large number of duplicated photos of which I've been unable to resolve easily and it is approx. 60 G of space. I would like to have access to my images (30,000) through external hard drives but not necessarily have them all on my mac. I believe that is what Picasa does. I'm using the new Picasa for Mac but want to continue to use iphoto as well.
If I did not form this question well enough, please let me know how to clarify. I'm trying to remedy this while answering a million Why? why? Why? questions from my 4 year old!
    Thank you.
    iphoto 7.1.5

I would like to learn more about 'libraries'
Step one is to learn about iPhoto - it is not a photo viewer like Picasa - it is a photo manager and uses an SQL database - the content and structure of this database are critical (as with any database application) to the operation of iPhoto - any changes made to either the content or structure of the database using external programs including (especially) the finder can corrupt the database and cause you to lose data
recent changes involving photos would be deleting several photos....I used a program called Grand Perspective and began to delete photos from there
This is how you destroyed your iPhoto library and made it unusable
As to space - the iPhoto database contains at a minimum a copy of the original photo (in the default and recommended operating environment) and a small thumbnail. When any modification to the photo is made a modified version is created so there might be three versions (no duplicates) of a photo within the iPhoto library - none of them are extraneous and none of them can be removed without corrupting the iPhoto library
Once a photo is imported into iPhoto (assuming default settings which are strongly recommended) the original source photo outside of iPhoto can be archived, deleted or otherwise handles - iPhoto has no further need for it.
The iPhoto library can be located on an external hard drive so long as that hard drive is always available when iPhoto is running
In general it is not advised to run two different photo organizers against the same photos - so if you use both Picasa and iPhoto you are likely to create future problems (although Google claims it is possible - just remember that you can not successfully make any change of any sort to any photo with the iPhoto library using Picasa or any other program - if you only use Picasa to look at photos you may be ok - if you never make any mistakes
As to your immediate problem - you have destroyed you iPhoto library by deleting files from it. If you want to use iPhoto you will have to start over - find the originals folder within the iPhoto library and launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and create a new library - import the photos from the originals folder into iPhoto and do not go inside the iPhoto library or modify the contents of the iPhoto library in the future.

Twas quite a hassle if I am honest which was eventually resolved but I don't feel qualified to help anyone through the process as it required a trip to my local apple store and a genius bar appointment.
Personally, I would do anything like moving pictures out of folders etc. Certainly not creating a new users. i don't think that is an elegant solution
Try the following which MAY just about rescue the situation for you but if they don't work you may have to do something more drastic.
    (1) Holding down Cmd & Alt at the same time, start iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon. From the resulting menu choose Rebuild photo library by selecting all available options given to you and then pressing REBUILD!
    If that doesn't work
    (2) Fire up Utilities. Go to migration assistant. Chose 'From another Time machine back-up'. Open the 'Users' option that comes up next and from there select Pictures, then uncheck everything else like Applications etc (you don't want to do a full migration of everything) and click go.
If that doesn't work, take a deep breath and this step is rather complicated but it worked for me. First of all close iPhoto! Then go to new Finder window.
From the Finder window choose Pictures, then iPhoto library, press CMD and the letter i. It brings up a new window. Go to Sharing & permissions. From there select the padlock to unlock settings. and then select User account, then press the 'cog' icon next to +/- abd choose Apply to enclosed items.
This may take a while. Once completed, re-open iPhoto.
And that should (I stress should) cure it.
    Good luck.

  • Hi. I opened iPhoto and, suddenly, it tells me " WHAT IPHOTO LIBRARY DO I WANT TO USE?" but i had a iPhoto library. When i search on my Pictures, i have the file IPHOTO LIBRARY but it appears on a dim letters and i can not open it.

Hi. I need some help on the following problem. I opened iPhoto and, suddenly, it tells me " WHAT IPHOTO LIBRARY DO I WANT TO USE?" but i had a iPhoto library. When i search on my Pictures, i have the file IPHOTO LIBRARY but is was not the icon on it i previously remembered and it appears on a dim letters and it can not be opened ... How can i recover it??

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • When I want to attach a photo to my e-mail I can no longer find my iPhoto library using open - media - photos.

So starting recently (last couple of months) when I want to attach a photo to my e-mail I can no longer find my iPhoto library using open - media - photos.  There's nothing there, it's just completely blank, when in the past my whole iPhoto library would show up with thumbnails and I could just choose the pic to attach.  Now I have to drag the photos I want from iPhoto onto the desktop and then I can find them there to attach to my e-mail.  How can I get my iPhoto library to show back up the simple way when I want to attach photos?  I've been having this problem attaching photos in hotmail or yahoo.

It should be an attachment.  Your Mac just displays a preview of certain attachments (such as .pdfs) in the body of the message.  A PC, for example, will see it as an attached file rather than a preview.
You can save the attachment on your Mac by Control-clicking on it and selecting Save Attachment.
