Pictures in ePub

I want to create an ePub Book with Pages and I have a question concerning images:
When I preview my eBook using iBooks on the iPad, I double tap on the picture and it opens in full screen. But the picture size isn't any bigger. How can I change this?
I have already seen iBooks, where the pictures can open in a larger size, when double tapping on them.

The important thing to remember abuout iPhoto is that it's a database. And like any db, the data must be imported into it. By default, when you import the pics to iPhoto they are copied into the iPhoto Package File in your Pictures Folder. If you have NOT changed the default, then yes, you can trash the pics outside of the iPhoto Package File.
Most people do this.

FrameMaker 11 omits embedded pictures when publishing to epub 3

I am trying to publish a book containing multiple embedded pictures to epub 3, but for some reason the FrameMaker 11 omits the pictures when running the publish script. The pictures also disappear when publishing to html help, but not when merely publishing to pdf. What may be wrong?
I am running TC4 on win64 with everything updated

What's the graphics file format of the imported image files?
What conversion have you specified for the output, assuming that ePub workflow is similar to XML and HTML, where image destruction is controlled by:
File > Utilities > HTML Setup
[ Options \... ]
File Format for Images:
(_) GIF (_) JPEG (_) PNG
{any new choices in FM11?}
And since FM converts image formats for some workflows, those files have to reside somewhere, so access and permission problems could arise.

Can we output a 'fixed-layout' (Apple's variety), Enhanced EPUB?

This is (of course), not a true 'EPUB', but instead Apple's bastardization of the format to allow 'enhanced' illustrated books to be sold in their bookstore.
But InDesign can produce some terrific interactive output for regular 'flowing' EPUBS for iBookstore/iPads like the work Terry White has demo'd.
Between the use of Articles for maintaining formatting, and the overlay panel I have to imagine one could produce a nice title with IND that would adhere to Apple's standard, but I've found no reference to it.
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply Bob. Yeah, I think I'm confused. As I read about DPS it seems I'm not alone in being confused. Part service, part software, expensive, yet touted to the entire digital publishing communit as if it were an option for all, budget notwithstanding.
So to clear things up, here's what I thought/think/hope... and maybe someone can illuminate where I'm right/wrong/close...
On the topic of using InDesign for (Apple's Variety) of EPUB creation specifically for the iBookstore:
     - I can create an EUB layout in Indesign, with full page (bleed), images, and add text frames on top of the background.
     - I can embed fonts (as long as I have the rights), into the doc.
     - This type of layout will not be reflowable, but is zoomable.
     - (I though) I could include simple HTML5 animation for elements such as a buttun to trigger 'Read Along' type function. Maybe simple object translation
        or opacity changes.
     - To make this work as a 'Fixed Layout' I would need to utilize the techniques offered in Liz Castro's miniguide on FIxed Layout on the extracted EPUB
        once it was generated by INDe.
     - At this point hopefully... it would pass muster for upload via itunes Producer.
On the topic of DPS: (these are more questions than understandings. But clearly I've missed a few salient points)
     - DPS is not for creating Illustrated books, 'fixed layout books' or picture books (EPUBs), that I can then upload and sell though my own iTunes
       Developer account.
     - DPS seems to be for larger publishing concerns (aka companies with plenty of $$$), that are creating digital magazines. I'm not sure how the final
       product is accessed. if it is a EPUB file or if the product is sold through DPS.
I'm sure there is more that I'm leaving out, but hopefullly some helpful input on these notions will help others and myself wrangle the task of producing iBookstore ready product with Indesign and potentially, DPS.

Problem with pictures in pages 5 and epub

Hello,
I have been using pages 09 to make epubs for the last 6 months with happy results.
My new macbook pro came in the mail and I have some problems.
I have figured out how to do all the text formatting, including titles/chapter names, etc. on pages 5.
My problems is with pictures.
In the past, I would click view, then show invisibles, so I could see where the chapter marks are to insert my picture in a particular spot.
The old pages, was great, and the pic showed up right where I wanted it, and that was the end of the story.
New Pages, just throws the picture on the page and then forces me to select a variety of options as far as telling it how I want the picture to display.
This would be no big deal if I only had one or two pics to deal with, but I have tons of pics that need to be inserted in pages and exported to epub.
Does anyone know an easy way to tell pages 5 to just put the picture where I am telling it!
Any advice would be appreciated.
Also, one negative on pages 09 is that you could only have a certain amount of pics/chapter, otherwise they would not show up in the exported epub.
Anyone know if pages 5 suffers from the same absurdity or if you can insert as many pics as you want/chapter.

A related issue.
I had been using pages 4.1.
When I would take a pic plucked from a pdf and put it into pages and then exported to epub, it compressed the file about 80% like it should.
I ditched pages 5 and went to pages 4.3 (which looked identical to my old pages 4.1.
For whatever reason when I take the same pdf pic and put it into pages and export to epub, instead of compressing by 80%, it is actually expanding the file by 700%.
The original image is identical in both cases, but pages 4.3 doesn't compress upon export to epub.
Any suggestions?

Before you say it cannot be done, that pictures have to be inline with the text please be knowledgeable on the example first.
Apple puts out "iPad @ work" in an epub format that does just that.
It has a logo on the top right of the page and appears to have ibook page selection below the page. This is not the typical ePub format, nor is it the typical iBook format. It is getting very frustrating to have people say it can not be done and not offer a solution as to how this book put out by apple, identified as an ePub book has this format.

The document in question was, obviously, produced using an application oter than Pages.

I have squished up text when I export a picture book to epub. Why??

So, I have a picture book, all pretty and laid out for CreateSpace. I create pdf's for createspace all the time, they are all fine, this one isn't any different. But now I'm trying to make an epub version.
I've exported it to epub, for a fixed layout, it looks wonderful, except for a few words on each page are all squished in..... like the letters on one word in a paragraph are all stacked on top of each other.
I am a just teaching myself this program, so I've most likely set something up wrong in my original file, I would imagine. So, treat me as stupid, and please oh please someone help me through this? I'm using InDesign CC. Not sure what other info you'd need to know.

EPub with music, video and pictures

I'm working on InDesign CS5.5. I am now working on an e-book, and I want to get into pictures, music and video, I use the interactive tools of InDesign and Iwant to know a few things so that everything will work.
1 What types of music files can be used?
2 What types of video files you can use?
3 pictures, I want to get possibility that user might access an image, enlarge, reduceand move it within the frame in which it sits.
4 Is that correct do for a music or video a group, contains the music and the activation buttons, and put it into a block of text like I do to images?

I think you might be confusing ePub with the Digital Publishing Suite. They are very different. ePub files can contain video and audio files, but

Can I insert a picture in the aside element for a footnote on epub 3?

I'm testing some things and I always get stuck when trying to insert images inside the element aside for a footnote.
Is there a solution for this or it's an ibooks bug?

How resize pictures in table on PAGES 5.2?

The new version 5.2 was be optmized for import image in table, but how resize these pictures in table?

DO NOT use Pages 5.2. Use Keynote or Numbers. The latest versions of these apps are stable. Pages 5.2 nothing but trouble.
Here is what I do with my art, which must be perfect for commercial printing and other purposes.
Export the page with your table and art out as a PDF. Then bring the PDF into Adobe Illustator and make any changes you need to get the art looing exactly like what you want. Save the art from AI ouit to PDF. AI creates bullet proof PDF files. Then drag the clean PDF back into Pages.
One reason AI is the preferred route is that Adobe comlpliant PDF files are the standard in the commercial printing industry. These days, all files going to commercial printers must be in clean PDF format. As you would expect, there are some excellent apps for pre-flighint PDF files.
The final reason for using PDF for art is that your illustrations will move cleanly into iBook Author for iBooks and apps for creating international standard ePubs and Amazon MOBI files.

InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions

I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
The ADE help says the following:
"Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.

On general tab I am "Use existing image"
I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
It passes the SIGIL check.
The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.

I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.

ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.

For sideloaded content the nook pulls the metadata from ePub file itself. I would suggest looking at a program like Sigil or Calibre that will let you edit the metadata in the book to make it appear like you want.
For the PDF vs ePub - No, that's the way PDFs work (think of them as graphics, not text), wheres ePubs are Web Pages - so no you can't them to behave exactly alike without converting the files.

InDesign CS5 ePUBS Image Consistency across platforms

I have a question I've been asking myself for months, and finally made an account here for the Adobe Forums, which seems to be pretty much the only place with useful information about ePubs.
I work in a company that's planning on transferring over 70 print modules (between 80-150 pages each) to be available on iPad and Android tablets / phones.
InDesign CS5 helps a lot, especially with being able to choose Header 1s as Page Breaks.
But, I seem to be having some issues with a couple of things that's preventing us from publishing these documents to the Apple Store and Androind Market.
1) Superscript / Subscript not appearing correctly on final product (Though this has been achieved by using Sigil to hack the CSS)
2) Bullet alignment (The bullets are all aligned perfectly, just not along with the first line, creating a secondary weird indent bug that looks terrible)
The main issue is pictures. I am using PNG images. A few months ago, the problem was solved - If I chose NOT to automatically format my images, they appeared perfect on the iPad/iPhone/Galaxy Phone and Galaxy Tab.
However, we took some time off this project, and now that I'm back on it, Aldiko has a new version, and it seems to break the images. Now my images in Aldiko are displaying huge, and previously, you'd be able to hold a finger on an image and it would open up full screen to get a closer look, but all of that seems gone now, and I'll only get half of my image at best.
Checking off to automatically format the images results in terrible low quality images that are so small you can barely see them.
I've done some research and apparently Aldiko is one of the most used free e-readers for android, so I'd definitely like for our products to display fine on it.
Any suggestions? Anyone else that experiences similar problems?

Your question is rather an advanced one. I've observed that most of us who reply to ePUB questions here are still learning to make ePUBs.

How to create ePUB with full size images/pages to adjust according to device?

        I have been trying, for nigh on two months, to convert/create my 7 books that are in print into eBooks; with first publishing scheduled to be Nook, with Kindle on the eventually list. I am, sadly still working on just getting the first one published! And I could really use any assistance to get this figured out. My intent was to publish several weeks ago...now my desperation is to publish before the weather gets too warm and kids are outside most of the time...or at least no later than Easter. :0)
        First and foremost, my books are picture/poetry books for kids of all ages. They were fully designed in Photoshop, where I also created the full size images for the first eBook. I received the specifications from B&N for the various Nook devices. Under the assumption that it would be best to create the largest of the files, thus allowing smaller sized devices to adjust the page accordingly to fit and the largest would not overstretch a smaller image, I sized my pages to 1280px x 1920px at 72dpi. (now I hear 150 is standard??)
        My text is included within the image as the design is one image = one page. I included a full text only version of the story/poem at the end for those wishing to adjust text or use a voice reader. I obviously have all the original files, but for publishing they were all saved as JPGs.
        After quite a struggle and a whole lot of frustration I managed to complete the manuscript in Barnes and Noble's Nook Press Manuscript Editor. My internet is molasses and thus much of this was done in the wee hours of the morning when the rest of the time zone is asleep. I only had one page with an issue, of an extra blank line/space that was irreparable. I published, and found it was completely botched in publish, though the preview looked a-okay. Only about the top left 1/6 of each image/page was visible in either my laptop's Nook for PC or my Android Tablet's Nook App. So I agonizingly awaited another 10 hours, hoping no one would buy my book during that time, for it to be removed from sale.
        I downloaded a trial of InDesign CC, and after two weeks of not even being able to create a single new document for some screwy reason, I bought a month's subscription. So far I'm not entirely convinced of this whole Creative Cloud malarkey, especially considering...as like I said my internet is slow...it took me nearly 20 hours just download the software. (Is it really that difficult to offer disc, seriously?) After a chat and phone call I can, in theory, now use InDesign.
        I created a New Document for Digital Publishing at the aforementioned specs (1280 x 1920 px). I made the rectangle placeholders the full size of the page, and place one image per page. This usually inserted the image at about 50% and I would have to select 100% and then move as necessary in to place.
        Thus, my first question is: Is there a way to place an image at 100% without having to do that extra resizing step? Or if there is an alternative way to place the image to the full size of the page without any of those other steps that would be lovely too.
        Okay, after placing several pages/images I also selected each and went to Object Export Options and Checking the Custom Rasterization and "Resize to Text Flow". I then exported a trial ePUB to see what it would look like. On both the PC and Tablet in landscape mode it was a far cry better than the other, but about oh a 1/3 of the bottom of each page was cut off. On the tablet I rotated to portrait and voila full page. Woohoo! But alas, I don't want to limit it.
        Is there something I am doing wrong? Did I miss a step or two somewhere so that the full image will fit on the page? I feel like I'm just about to turn the page on this thing, but it's stuck to the one after that.
        I would greatly appreciate any insight, tips, help that anyone can offer. I have run the gauntlet of Barnes and Noble...cough, cough...support and apparently I ask questions which no Nook Press rep can answer and the forums over there have no clue about InDesign. It's almost as if with all the fantastic beautiful screens out there today nobody wants picture books! How does National Geographic do it?!

In case it is necessary: My laptop uses Window 7 Pro 64-bit, InDesign CC is 64-bit and my 10.1 tablet uses Android. I can view the EPUB files in Nook for PC and Nook for Android. I also have Kindle, LumiRead, and various other apps on the tablet. I can also have someone preview the finished epub, if need, on a Mac, iPad, and/or Android phone...though I do not have any of these. Not sure who has a Nook I can look at though. Thanks again.

I think here you want your images to fit in the full page size frame automatically. For this you can try the follwoing steps:
1. Create a new doc
2. Goto Object menu and choose Frame fitting options
3. Select Autofit and from Fitting drowdown, select "Fit content to frame". Refer the screenshot below:
After this you images should automatically fit in the entire page placeholder frames. Please let me know if this does not work or if the problem you are facing is different and I did not understand your problem correctly.

Pages to ePub observations and hints

I've been experimenting with exporting ePubs. Here are some things I have have found that may help others.
These observations are based on Pages v4.1 and iBooks v2.0.1
These truths might be invalidated when new versions of Pages and/or iBooks appear.
There may be subtle distinctions and/or situations where these observations don't work as described. Or maybe for some of them, I have gotten close to the truth but not fully realized it completely yet. Experiment with them at your will.
1. Pages does not and will not insert any "page breaks" (or css causing that effect) in an ePub file per se. When exporting to ePub, Pages ignores any and all page breaks or section breaks you insert into a Pages document. Instead, it splits what it considers to be chapters each into separate xhtml files within the created ePub container. It seems that iBooks is hardcoded to automatically display each xhtml file beginning on a new "page."
2. According to Apple's "ePub Best Practices" document, Pages considers chapters to be delimited by instances of text of the style "Chapter Name". I have found that changing the name of that style does not effect the resulting ePub. Therefore, it is not the style's name that informs pages to use it as the chapter delimiter. Instead, I have found that Pages will look at all the styles you have marked as to be included in the TOC (hereafter called "TOC-included-styles"). Whichever one of these happens to be used first in the document, will be the style that Pages will use to parse chapters, unless the first TOC-included-style used is named "Chapter Number". In this case, that instance of "Chapter Number" is skipped over when considering the style to use as chapter delimiter, and the next TOC-included-style found will be used.
3. Unlike "Chapter Name", the style named "Chapter Number" is required be to named "Chapter Number". This style further affects the splitting of the xhtml files, and therefore, iBook's rendering of "page breaks". An exported ePub will normally be split into xhtml files at the first character of all instances of "Chapter Name". A document that also includes any "Chapter Number" instances will be split at the first character of those instances. The rule, in plain english, would be: split into xhtml files at instances of 'Chapter Name', but if any particular 'Chapter Name' instance has a 'Chapter Number' instance before it, back up and make the split immediately before that 'Chapter Number'. If a "Chapter Name" instance has more than one instance of "Chapter Number" before it, the split will happen at the earliest instance of "Chapter Number" until a previous "Chapter Name" is found. If the last "Chapter Name" instance in a document has any "Chapter Number" instances after it, there will be no split at those "Chapter Number" instances. Any other styles in between any of these instances are preserved, so you could have a new page in iBooks with a chapter number, followed by some text, then the chapter's name. If you rename the "Chapter Number" style to something else, it is then considered like any other style and has no affect on resulting ePub structure.
4. If you insert a TOC into your Pages document, it is ignored for ePub export. The TOC created in an ePub will include whatever styles are checked in the Document->TOC inspector. The ePub TOCs as generated by Pages seem to have only two levels of indentation. The high level is the chapter level, as described above, whatever TOC-included-style appears first in the document will be the chapter delimiter and be the least indented level of the TOC. All other TOC-included-styles, no matter what they are named or how they are configured in Pages, will be placed at indent level two in the resulting ePub's TOC. So, a style does not need to be named "Heading" to be included in the ePub TOC, it just needs to be a TOC-included-style.
5. You can add however many images you want to a chapter, but if the combined file size of the images in that chapter add to more than 1Mb, then the resulting ePub will not display any of the images which cause the size of that chapter to surpass 1Mb.
6. There is talk that a "magic" resolution for images is 600x860 in order to have them occupy a full "page" in the resulting ePub. I have found that any image whose pixel resolution fills the iBooks page viewport will do that, if the image is also set to cause wrap-with-clear-space on the left and/or right. The iBooks viewport seems to be 368x569 pixels when the iPad is held in landscape orientation. So in other words, no matter how large your image is, when viewing on the iPad in landscape mode, it will be at the most 368x569 physical iPad pixels. Therefore it seems to me, if you only wanted to view a book in landscape mode, you could make all your images exactly 368x569, and not larger, making the resultant ePub file as small as possible. But you'd probably want to design the book for portrait mode as well. In portrait mode, the viewport seems to be 547x???. Where I have not taken the time to deduce the exact vertical viewport dimension, but I know it is close to 780px, either way, the image can be smaller than 600x860. iBooks will shrink any image larger than the viewport at hand (portrait or landscape) to fit the viewport. If the aspect ratio of the image differs greatly from the viewport, the image will appear "letterboxed" because the aspect ratio of the image is maintained as it is shrunk to fit the page's viewport.
7. The margins of your Pages document, whether they be document-wide margins, or margins within a section, don't seem to affect the resulting ePub. The document-wide-margins and the layout-margins (in a section) can be set to zero. The on-the-ruler margins can be at the edges of the "paper." Extranious tabs on the rulers can affect things. I find it is best to drag all tab stops off the rulers.
8. Tables are problematic. They are not good constructs to put in ePubs. Pages will dimension tables/columns width based on percentages. So if the overall width of your table drawn in Pages happens to be 50% the width of the "paper", then in iBooks on the iPad, the table will be 50% of the width of iPad's page viewport. An 8.5x11 "sheet" of paper shown in Pages is typically defined as 612 pixels wide* (change your Pages ruler units preferences to Points to verify, the Document inspector will show the page size in pixels). So if you draw your table half the width of that sheet, you get a table 306px wide in Pages. That's pretty good, you can fit a bit of text in a table that wide. But now you export to ePub, and since the iPad's (landscape) viewport is only 368 pixels wide, your resulting table is 50% of that, or 184px wide. Since the size of the text hasn't changed much, now everything is wrapping and going crazy. Column widths are also generated as percentages of the table's width, so a column that fits its content nicely in Pages is now too narrow in the ePub. Confusion ensues. Incidentally, the above assumes your document left and right margins are set to zero, if not, the percentage of width is calculated between the margins, not the edges of the page. What you can do is make the table 100% of the width of the page, in that case the resulting table in the ePub will always be 100% of the width of the page viewport on the iPad. For a bit of left and right margin, you can throw in an empty column to the left and an empty column to the right of your table's content, then shut off the border lines for those side columns so they aren't seen. This won't solve your problems, but might take some of the pain away. If a user cranks the font size up as high as it will go on the iPad, no table remains standing.
* if you do any measuring with on-screen rulers, make sure you set Page's zoom to 100% first, as it defaults to 125%!
9. If you want to get a clue as to how your book will flow on the iPad (in landscape mode for example), you can temporarily set your document's Page Size to be 368x569 pixels (will all margins set to zero). You set Page Size and Margins in pixels (in inspector) by first changing the ruler units to Points in Page's settings. Be careful though, it's an approximate result, not exact WYSIWYG, the words won't end up exactly where you see them.
10. If you have read thus far, you probably already know that the first (on-screen) page of a Pages document can be used to automatically create the ePub's cover image upon export. As mentioned elsewhere on the 'net, floating images can be used on this first page (if they are used elsewhere they are ignored). I have found that shapes, specifically floating shapes can be used on the first page as well. You can even use background shapes! This unlocks the door to creating some truly nice covers with a minimum of work. I have here attached an image of a cover I created in just a couple of minutes without using Photoshop or any other image editor, just Pages. I will describe below how it is done
All the objects on the first page (shown above) is set to floating or background, therefore, you need to move the inline text to the next page. You can do this by inserting a section break. You can see it in the upper left corner. That forces all the text to be shuttled off to next page, out of the way.
First I created the swirly pattern background. To do so, create a box shape on the page and immediately set its Placement properties to "in background". Keep "background objects selectable" and resize it to cover the entire page. Remove any border or shadow from it. Then set its Fill to any seamless pattern you like. Keep the pattern pixel dimensions small so as not to create a large ePub. This particular swirly pattern I created very quickly for free at patterncooler dot com. Set the fill properties to "Tile" so that your pattern is tiled throughout the whole box shape. Now you can uncheck "background objects selectable" so that you can work on top of it without disturbing it.
The size of the pattern repeat itself is important to consider. The book cover will be seen in two places: on iBook's bookshelf (small), and opposite the table of contents in the book itself if the iPad is held in landscape mode. If the size of the repeat is too small, then you cant really make out the pattern in the bookshelf icon because the whole cover has been shrunk down, if the repeat is too large, it might look nice on the bookshelf but funny opposite the TOC. You'll have to experiment, but the repeat used in this example is a good compromise.
Next the brown spine down the left hand side is another box shape. This one's placement is set to "floating". Stretch it to the edges of the page. I filled this one with a subtle gradient to give it a slightly 3 dimensional look. Remember that iBooks will overlay shade an indentation along the left edge to appear as a crease. So dont make it too dark. Remove any border from this box, but give it a shadow on the right, just enought to make it appear affixed on the book. I used shadow settings of Offset 1pt, Blur 6pt, Opacity 75% at an angle of 323. Too much offset or blur ruins the effect. You want it to appear as a very thin layer adhesed to the "book". As for colors, use the eyedropper on the color inspector to pick colors from the background pattern, this will make it "work together" if you are color challenged.
The stitching on the right edge of the spine shape is a simple line shape 2 pts wide. Properties are: dotted, with a very slight shadow (2,4,85%,315). You can use the "bring forward" or "send backward" commands if the stack order gets mixed up.
Next add the Title and Author boxes. They are simple floating box shapes with color fill, and simple black border of 3px. Page's pop-up alignment guides will help you center them in the page. There is no shadow for these boxes as they (here) are supposed to mimic a printed and not a physical adhesion. Instead of a line border, you can also apply Page's "picture frame borders. I went crazy with those, but ultimately came back to the simple line border.
If you want to make these "adhesions" there are lots of nice paper textures on the 'net you can use as fill.
Finally you see there is a slight highlight on the top edge of the book and slight shadow along the right and bottom edge. These make the cover seem to have rounded edges, they give it a 3D appearance. To create the right hand "round over" draw a line-shape the height of the page. Make it 5px wide, and give it shadow properties of 5,4,50%,142. Next you have to move it so that it is slightly off the paper and thus not seen, but close enough that it's shadow is still seen. To move it, you can use a combination of the mouse, the arrow buttons on the keyboard, and/or the position inspector pane. In my example, the page is 600px wide, and the line sits at the 601px location. Be careful about moving shapes off the page, as you can "lose" them. Oddly enough, there is no way to see and/or find shapes that are "off page" (that I know of anyway). If you lose a shape off the page, you have to draw selection boxes blindly, until you stumble upon the shape again. It seems a way to hide content if one so desired.
For the bottom edge of the book, do the same thing with a horizontal line. Shadow angle in my example is the same 142 degrees.
For the top edge, do the same except make the shadow color white. (5,5,50%,270). This shape is hard to select once you have it offscreen. If you want to select it, you might have to move the background and right edge shadow out of the way first. Then draw a small box at the top right corner of the page until you hit it.
And one last detail, you might notice my page size is 600x860px (8.333in x 11.944in). This is because I think this aspect ratio is shaped more like a novel than than 8.5x11in (612x792px). The latter is squarer, and more the shape of a text book.

Thank you for sharing such an informative post! I'd like to offer one small correction.
My company publishes children's picture storybooks in print. These are edge to edge full color pages for those who may not be familiar with this format. Our early ePub's were always disappointing in that we could not duplicate the print format without showing considerable white margins on an e-reader. We have since solved that problem in order to achieve the maximum image size. There will always be some amount of white margin in ePub format, but our image output now nearly fills the screen of any e-reader.
The 600X860 resolution is correct in order to achieve a wall to wall ePub image. The image must be created at that resolution for insertion into the document, and the page setup must also be set at the same dimension, which in inches is 8.333X11.944. You cannot, for example, use a smaller size image and drag it with constrained proportions to fill the viewport at the 600X860 resolution. The exported ePub file recognizes the portion of the image that is beyond the margins of the viewport and it will show up in an e-reader with a large white bottom margin.
Dragging a smaller image than the 600X860 resolution to fill the viewport with unconstrained proportions will work, but of course distorts the image. So, create your images at 600X860, insert them into your doc, export to ePub and you will be happy, happy, happy!
