Pictures look completely different in Aperture

I shoot with a Pentax K200D with RAW+JPEG using the PEF format for RAW files. I then use Apple Aperture to edit the files, but I recently noticed that pictures converted to jpeg using aperture looke very different from the PEF files when viewed side by side.

Like RWB I am a bit confused by your query, but my guess is that you may at some point be comparing files derived from RAW PEF captures against captured JPEGs. In addition to being compressed, captured JPEGs have typically been heavily adjusted in-camera for color, sharpness, etc. Prior to editing, files derived from RAW captures will appear flat in comparison to such files.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

  • I bought a Mac Mini for the family but there's something very odd. Windows looks completely different and I'm completely confused. Is this because of Windows 8? How do I get back to my old Windows!

Windows looks completely different and we can't use the computer. We're flumoxed, we did some research and read about this new version of Windows - is this the problem? Is there a way to revert to the older version of Windows? Apple has shot themselves in the foot with this change. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Macs don't come with Windows. They come with OS X. If you want Windows, you'll need to install it yourself, or return the Mac and buy a PC.

  • My Adobe Photoshop looks completely different.  How did it change from what I am used to using?

My photoshop elements looks totally different from what I have been using.  How can I find the simplier version I am used to?

When did the version change to 10?   I used it in March and it was the one I was used to.  It was much simplier.  Is there another Adobe Photoshop besides Elements?

Hold down the CtrlShiftAlt keys and simultaneously click on the Edit button on the welcome screen. After a few seconds release the three keys and look behind the welcome screen by closing it. Alternatively hold down the three keys whilst  clicking on the desktop icon for the Editor or PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe in the Programs folder. Keep holding down all three keys for a few seconds; then release. You should get the settings option. When you see a pop up box with the words: Delete Adobe Photoshop Elements Settings File? Click on Yes Then wait whilst Elements rebuilds the preferences.

  • IWeb site looks completely different when published compared to on iWeb...

For whatever reason, whenever I publish my website (I published it to a "local folder"), it looks completely different and VERY ugly.
This is what it looks like in iWeb right now:
    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/WWEFreak69/Screenshot2011-03-22at34527PM.pn g
This is what it looks like when it's published:
    http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/WWEFreak69/Screenshot2011-03-22at33817PM.jp g
    There's an obvious difference.
So what am I doing wrong?

For one thing there are many files that did not get uploaded to the server.  You can see which by viewing your site in Safari and bringing up the Activity window (Command+Option+A).
The pages where the navbar is down the site appear to have much of the site's objects in the navbar section rather than the body of the page.  Go to the iWeb preferences and check the checkbox to show guides and image indicator.
The design link on the home page is inoperable.  Did you intend to have just the text be the link for the hyperlinks on that page or also the image that each text box is on?  Makes for a very small link to find.

  • I am using CC v17.1 on a PC.  I have recently taken over design responsibilities from someone who used a Mac.  I need to use the Cygnet Round font, but it looks completely different on my PC than it did on the Mac.

I am wondering if fonts look different on a PC than a Mac.  The font I am using is Cygnet Round, and it is completely different on my PC.  I am at a loss....
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi John,  I am using Adobe Illustrator CC Version 17.1.

  • Pictures look slightly different in Photoshop CC compared to windows Photoviewer (lighter)

    Hi there,
I purchased PS CC last week, before I worked with PS CS3.
From the moment I started using CC I noticed that my photos look slightly different in Photoshop CC compared to windows Photoviewer or in PS CS3.
They look slightly lighter, which makes it hard to adjust the correct levels of contrast etc
Is there a way to sync the view inside CC to look the same as in other programs?
    Marcel

    Thanks for your reaction!
Inside Photoshop CC, the settings are like this:
In Photoshop CS3 it's set to 'North america general purpose 2...
This makes me think of the following question: After i install a default windows 7 64 bit in dutch and a default Adobe PS CC, do I need to change anything in the default color settings in order to allign the different programs?

  • My images look completely different while I'm working in Bridge and Photoshop (CS6) than they do once they are saved.

They look normal while I'm working on them in Bridge or Photoshop but when I saved them (doesn't matter how I save them - jpeg, png, it's all the same) and view them with any other program or on any other computer the blacks go through the roof and the contrast is way too high.  I didn't have this problem at all on CS3 and I'm using the same computer and monitor.

The profile, in this case Adobe RGB, follows the file, that's the whole idea. The profile defines the colors you get with those specific RGB numbers. The only option when you save is to not embed it, which is usually a very bad idea, because then the RGB numbers no longer have a specific meaning. They're just arbitrary numbers.
The working space mainly matters when you create a new file. The document profile, if it already has one, overrides the working space. Put it this way: each file has its own working space, and then you have a backup working space in case the file has none.
(You can change this behavior in color settings > color management policies, but don't. The default is "preserve embedded profiles", and that's the only sensible setting. The other two will quickly send you out swimming with no dry land in sight. So to speak).
All that said, working in Adobe RGB is probably not a good idea until you get a better understanding of the implications. sRGB is the safe choice, it will usually display correctly without any special considerations. So if you have an Adobe RGB file and you want to use the safer sRGB instead, you convert to sRGB, with the menu item Edit > Convert to Profile.
Don't be confused by the fact that you then have sRGB as both document profile and monitor profile. That's coincidental, and just to set up a safe workflow. These two profiles are still separate and serve different purposes. The document profile defines the numbers in the file; the monitor profile describes the behavior of the monitor. But they're similar enough so that you can use it in both places.
So. What do you see now, with sRGB as monitor profile? You must close down Photoshop and relaunch it for the new profile to take effect. Are they similar or still different?

  • Why RW2 & DNG versions of the same picture look much different?

    Dears!
RAW format for my camera is RW2. I used conversion of RW2 files into DNG to process it in Ps.
When previewing pictures  in IRFAN VIEW I noticed that RW2 and DNG versions of the same picture (before any processing) are quite different. RW2 one is much sharper and with better collors than DNG.
Does anybody know why it is like that and if its better to use an external soft to work on RW2 files directly instead of converting them into DNG to process in Ps Camera Raw? Thanks for help!

Hehehe…  You have an amusing misconception regarding the monitoring and/or moderation of these user to user forums, especially the DNG forum with its minimal traffic.
Posts can go unanswered here for months or forever.  Adobe does not monitor the forums.
You had not mentioned you saw the issue in Ps as well, you only referenced IrfanView, and that was what I  addressed.

IrfanView is showing you camera-processed image (embedded in the raw file by the camera), whereas ACR is showing you, well, ACR-processed image. You need to learn how to set up defaults and edit to please...
Edit: IrfanView is also showing you an embedded preview of the DNG, but it's the default rendering of ACR instead of camera.
All experienced ACR users can accomplish superior results than camera-jpeg. However, initial rendering needs some help, and also there is a psychological factor: you're used to the way the camera renders things, and so it seems more right...

  • 5D Mark III photos processed in 4.1 RC2 look COMPLETELY different in 4.1 final

    Processed in 4.1 RC2:
    Processed in 4.1 Final:

Anyone got an idea what might have happened between these versions to cause this? I saw someone else in the Fred Miranda forms complaining about the exact same thing here.

Could be the same problem as in the other thread http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1016525?tstart=0 but only "in reverse". I noticed that like in the other thread, you used very strong clarity. Strong clarity in pictures with very dark areas (I assume your picture is a crop from a larger area?) had some issues in 4.1 RC2, which have been fixed in 4.1 final. So it is possible that clarity behaves totally different in RC2 and final for such pictures.
Interestingly, your picture becomes much darker in 4.1 final, while in the other thread, it becomes much brighter. Maybe it has something to do with the different highlights/shadows/whites/blacks values.
P.S. I expect that Adobe will say that this is "OK" because one should not rely on a release candidate. But I understand that this can be a real problem though - because a lot of people used the RCs because of the many issues with 4.0.

  • Grade looks completely different in FCP

New to color, just graded my first Color project.
When I send the project back to FCP, the grade is totally different (on the same monitor). Much lighter and greyer.
The material is HDV 1080i and my project settings are the same as the footage.
    Any ideas?

I get similar discrepancies occasionally with random clips within a sequence --
Either it will "redline" or I get something that is just wrong. For some obscure reason, deliberately importing the g1.mov from the render directory fixes the issue, rather than going through the communication language of the XML tour bus. Why the same clip.. the same media, the same file! looks different depending on the way it is imported into FCP utterly mystifies me, though.

  • Problem: design view looks completely different than live view

I am trying to make changes to my home page in Dreamweaver, and when I am viewing the page in 'design view' the background image for the container is missing, and the divs are all over the place. When I view the same page in live view and in browser preview, it looks fine.
Because I can't really see what the page is going to look like in 'design view', I can't really make changes to the site. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for the help.

When things get really goofed up, it could be caused by malformed code or orphaned div tags.  Sometimes browsers will let you slide with poor code, but DW Design View won't.

  • My MacBook Pro was hacked. A chess board appeared and when I clicked it code scrolled all over the screen and then my desktop disappeared. It all came back but now it shows a guest user and my screen looks completely different.

    Disconnect from the network.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a mirroring tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Preferably both.
    Reconnect to the network.
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume with the default options. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For details of how this works, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Transfer only "Users" and "Settings" – not "Applications" or "Other files." Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media.
    Change all Internet passwords.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Colors look radically different

Sorry if this is such a newbie question…without fail, whenever I find a theme I like, it looks completely different on my system. I can either re-create the color using cmyk or rgb values in Illustrator OR import the theme, and the colors always look different from what I see looking at them on the kuler website. Using CS3, 24" iMac v10.5.8.
    Thanks!
    Cheri

Yeah, I am seeing the same thing.  When I build a palette in Illustrator and then enter the exact same color values in Kuler to build/save a palette, the colors look very different.  And from what I can tell, the Illustrator versions are much more accurate.  Another interesting thing, I have 2 monitors calibrated to match, and can drag items from one to the other with very little color shift ... but when I drag a Kuler page (or even a screen capture of a kuler page), the colors shift dramatically from one monitor to the other.  Very strange.
