Pictures on PC, want to use on mac

I have all my pictures from the last 10 years on my pc. Is it possible to use them in iPhoto on the mac without copying all those pictures to the mac? I have tried importing them after unchecking Copy items to the iPhoto Library but not sure if that is working. The size of my library was growing quite large (500 megs) after importing the first 500 images so it seems as if it was copying the files over.
Any ideas.
Thanks
John

While that will work it is a referenced library and is strongly not recommended - it makes importing and deleting photos more difficult and replacing defective or upgrading hardware much more difficult and has other drawbacks

And changes to any photos including rotating them if the camera has auto rotate set will crate a modified version in the iPhoto library

I want to use my Mac desktop as a portal for viewing my cable television via some kind of cord. Is this possible and what do I need to set this up?

It can be done with analog but not digital thanks to "good 'ol" HDCP copy protection which apple (and most other manufacturers) unfortunately respect.
So you can take the analog output from your cable box (component -- 5 cables -- if it has it but generally they all have composite -- 3 cables) and feed it into some kind of converter or into some appropriate pci card for your mac pro.  But none of them are going to let you directly use the HDMI output from the box to your computer.
Bottom line, no single cord is going to work and it will never be the higher quality digital picture you get on your tv.
Some qualification:  There are boxes that I think support hdmi input.  Look at Blackmagic.  But I still don't think you can get around the HDCP from the cable box (might depend on the kind of cable box).

  • I want to use a mac mini as a server supporting storage. Can I pair my macair to it for when I need to perform updates and maintenance ?

I want to use a mac mini as a server supporting storage. I have other devices such as an iMac and iPad that will access information from the server. I do not want to purchase a monitor and keyboard as the unit will sit in a cupboard out of sight. Can I pair my macair to it for when I need to perform updates and maintenance ?

I have a 2010 Mac Mini running Yosemite and Server which I use
    as a headless home server.
I have is set up to allow screen sharing and can connect to it and
control it with my iMac, Macbook Pro, iPhone, and a 2011 Mini Server
that I use as an HTPC.
You can check this out for all the Yosemite Server capabilities:
    https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/4.0/
I have iTunes Home Sharing set up on it and have my entire iTunes
library on it.  I can then use any of my Macs to play Movies or Songs
from it and only keep locally a select subset of that on my individual
    devices.
Rather than and update server, I utilize Server's Caching Service.  The caching
server will duplicate any update download (system or MacApp Store purchases)
any time a device that is connected to my network down loads one.  The update will
then be stored locally and all other devices will download the update from it which
can be faster than from Apple directly.  This has the advantage of only having to download
once with limited bandwidth internet connections.  There is also an Update Server service
available, but it is some what more involved in setting up.  However, it will download
    and store all available updates.
There is another thing as well if you do not care for syncing things like Contacts, Calendar, etc.
to iCloud, you can set Server up to sync these items across devices locally.

  • I want to use my Mac as a player and download cds to my ipad. How do I get this to work ?

I want to use my MAC strickly as a player and download cds to my ipad. I don't always have connectivity so it would be nice to have some stored tunes. How do I do it ? Thanks, Tombo1

Your question is a little bit confusing to me. If you have music on the Mac that you want to transfer to the iPad, you have to import the music into iTunes first. You can read about that process here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1473
Then you have to sync the music to the iPad. You do not Internet connectivity to sync the iPad if you use the cable and connect the device to the Mac that way. You can read this for an overview about syncing.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1386
and this as well for Mac.

Is there a performance difference between GPT and MBR? If GPT is better, I do not mind formatting the drive with it.
    5. No special drivers are needed.

I read through this, and it looks like the problem was fixed in a BIOS update, which I plan to do. However, it also seems like Intel Rapid Start is not even worth it in the first place, as sleep consumes almost no power at all.

  • I want to use the Mac more, I really do, but-

Admittedly, I’m a new Mac user (purchased Macbook Pro last October), and I’m really trying to get acclimated to it. I WANT to use it more, but I hit a roadblock at every turn. I’ll keep my issues limited to iMovie in this thread of course, but it seems like every step I take with a Mac is a struggle and more expensive than to do these same, relatively simple things on a PC. It never seems to do exactly what I want. Very simple features seem to be left out in order to entice you to purchase add-ons, plug-ins, or a different package more suited to the task (i.e. Final Cut).
I’m simply creating fancy slideshows using still photographs with iMovie, and find it grossly lacking in features. It nice for a basic introduction into slide show presentation software, but if you really would like to do something fancy, this software doesn’t cut it. I’m having “Ken Burns” limitations, like exactly what is posted here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5222444&. There are only 12 transitions to choose from…12, which I can’t believe (even the utterly simplistic Windows Vista Movie Make has 63). Many times the playback seems “choppy” when played on the Mac, etc etc. I won’t bore you with more issues.
Now I understand any packaged photo presentation program (with iLife) is not going to have all the features as one that you would purchase exclusively for that function, so what are my alternatives?
    1) Purchase Final Cut Express for $200, which has gotten very lukewarm reviews to put it mildly. Seems to be overly complicated and you cannot add sound tracks ?!? (I didn’t read all the details on this one).
    2) Purchase Final Cut Studio for $1300. Not going to happen, way too pricey.
    3) Purchase over $500 in GeeThree Volumes 1 through 10 (http://www.geethree.com/slick/), which I heard is about the best alternative to spicing up the iMovie software to make it satisfactorily functional (am I wrong in this assessment?)
    4) Stick with my PC and run ProShow Producer for $250 (http://www.photodex.com/products/producer). This is a super program which has almost all of the features you could possibly want, and is very simple to use. The only thing it doesn’t have is a nice DVD menu system, which I can live with.
So someone, please give me some suggestions. Am I not seeing the forest through the trees? Are there any better alternatives? I’d even entertain purchasing another Mac software package if there is one out there that someone knows does a better job.

    Hi Lobster1071,
It is a shame when you can create a slideshow with Spotlight or the Finder yet an app intended for such can't get the job done. Once upon a time iMovie had about 15± transitions and 50± effects so it is not that you can't see the forest through the trees but that the forest has been clear cut and it's a big pile of brush and wood chips that is blocking your view. I don't believe anyone at the moment has any plug-ins for transitions or effects for iMovie 08 so if that was something you were looking for you would have to download the iMovie HD 6 available to those who thought the were buying a motion picture app.
    Apple's blurb about iMovie 08.
    Quick ways to add polish.
iMovie is designed to make everything simple — including the professional touches that help your movie stand out even more.
    Photos and music.
Use the iLife Media Browser to bring photos into your movie from iPhoto. Summon the real-time, redesigned Ken Burns effect to add motion and zooms to still photos like a pro
So much for simplicity, maybe they mean we are supposed to have a seance to summon KB from eternal rest to be able to get this to work. Who knows? It's not too friendly in iM 6 either.
Graphic Converter is another powerful app that has many uses and you can create a slideshow with a KB effect that is a has a decent pan and zoom. Zoom is what they call it in GC. $20± US it is truly a bargain as it is a great tool to have even if iMovie was worth the disk space it consumes. In addition to pan and zoom you can combine video and still images and it provides you access to many other QuickTime transitions and effects you can then export it to a QT movie and to iDVD if you want.
The learning curve is a bit steep but support for registered users has always been very good and once you have the hang of it it is easy to include images of any size and shape with the ability to easily automate the tasks that you find yourself repeating quite often. If you need to rotate, crop or edit for any reason you can do that right within the same app. You can try with full functionality to check it out @ http://www.lemkesoft.com/ I do find that I use it most efficiently/productively in conjunction w/ QT Pro but don't think that is really required unless you want to have more than a two channel stereo track as GC allows the inclusion of an audio track but no editing of it. If you want multiple tracks or sound FX etc. that would still have to be done in GarageBand or elsewhere and saved to a single audio file.
iWork is also very capable of producing halfway decent slideshows with more features than iMovie as well. but I don't think I'd recommend going out and buying it unless you're looking for something to replace MS Office or something similar but there should be a 30 day trial already on you Mac or Install disc so you can try it out and see if it will work for your needs. If nothing else you will find out how much frustration you can really tolerate.

  • I have and android phone and I want to use my mac email account.  I cannot get the account to load

I am using an Droid Razr M phone and want to put my mac email account back on it.  When doing the set up I constantly get a message that the there is not a connection to the Server.  I have followed all the instructions on how to do it but it consistanly will not let me set the account back up.  I am using the correct email address and password.

Thank you so much for the help.  I had to enter my complete email address using me.com added to my sign in name and then after I got to the next page to enter the settings, I changed the address to not include the me.com information.  From there everything went through just fine.  This ended about a week of frustration trying with many folks at the Verizon Store to help me.  I'm so grateful for your help.

Hi Mark and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
A MacBook (or MacBook Pro) and an Airport (WiFi) connection will allow you to access Internet anywhere in a 150ft radius.
You're not practically going to be able to use a G5 desktop around the home.
I'd advise you post more details of your machine (iMac/Power Mac?), how you connect to the Internet and your budget.

  • Buying a new Plasmsa - want to use my mac on it - Please Help....

    Hello,
I am pretty new to Apple Mac's and so am a bit of a novice. I have a Macbook Pro laptop. I am about to buy a new HD ready Plasma TV for my living room and would like to know the following?
    1. Will it be possible for me to have the display on my Macbook shown (either wired or wirelessly) on a plasma tv?
    2. If so how would this be acchieved? What sort of adapters/cables would I need. (idealy I would like it to be wireless).
    3. If it is possible what sort of spec TV do I need. Any make/model recomendations welcome.
    4. My "dream" is to be able to view my iphoto's and i'movies on my tv screen. *** well as play my Itunes through the Tv and use my macbook as a DVD player. I would also like to beable to surf the web via my macbook but have it showning on the tv. Is this a pipe dream or can it be done?
    Thanks in advance....

I use my Toshiba 42 inch Plasma TV as a monitor with my MacBook Core 2 Duo. I bought a mini DVI to VGA converter and a VGA cable and it hooks into a VGA input on my TV.I also wired it into my home theater speaker system It is great for internet and even better for movies but as soon as my Apple TV arrives (early March) I won't need it for that anymore. I just bought a used MDD dual 867MHz processor G4 and I plan to hook it to the TV when I get it and use the MacBook with the Apple TV only after that. Bottom line it will work great and as long as you don't leave a fixed image on the screen for an hour or longer you don't have to worry about screen burn. That's what screen savers were made for after all. Yes an LCD is a better choice if you are only going to use it as a computer monitor (but I doubt that's the case) but nothing beats a Plasma (for my eyes) for HD movies. Best Wishes, I'm sure you'll love it. Theres nothing like surfing the web on a really large screen!

  • Want to use my mac as wifi hotspot with 3G USB connection

    Howdy Folks,
I'd like to try an alternative to my local internet provider, which has now increased to $240/mo for less than 2mb/sec service. (I live in a remote place with just one provider)
The local cellular company offers 3G USB internet "sticks", and I would like to see if I can use that to tether my MacBook Pro as a hot spot.
And, better yet, is there a way to expand that to my Airport Extreme?
Or, use the USB connection on an Airport Express directly?
    Anyone know a solution(s)?
I have a small cafe, so the purpose beyond personal use, would be to provide WiFi access for up to about 6 additional users.
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, thanks. I'm still confused. So I turn Wi-Fi off and I try to select "personal hotspot" under "cellular data" and I get the following message: "wifi is off - personal hotspot will only be available over Bluetooth and USB. Do you also want to enable it over wifi?" Then it gives me two choices 1) Turn on Wifi  or 2) Bluetooth and USB Only. If I choose 1 like I did today the bluebar appears but it's connected over a crappy wifi network...if I choose #2 the blue bar never appears and the ipad isn't a hotspot???

  • Mac Formatted iPod Mini, want to use on PC then back to Mac?

I want to use my Mac formatted iPod Mini on a PC when I'm away for Christmas, but when I return home I want to use it on my Mac again. Is formatting the iPod to a PC required to do this? I don't want to lose all my music when I'm away because there will be no way to get it back till I return home. And, if I must format for a PC, what will happen when I plug it back into a Mac? Do I have to reformat again? Has anybody accomplished this successfully?

An iPod formatted with Windows will work with Windows or Mac.
An iPod formatted with Mac will not work on Windows. WIndopws cannot read Mac.
If you format with Windows, you will not need to reformat with Mac.

  • Converted all my pictures to smart pictures and I can't use them

Apple converted the jpg files smart files and apple can't open them. So I bought a program to convert them back and that does nothing. It may work great but is says nothing. The is an outlet file some where but it doesn't say. Thing only get worse, It is a nightmare. how can I get mu pictures back I want to use them for a project. Non destructive my butt. Just let me get my pictures back.

Adobe is not at fault.  I couldn't get back here to answer the question so answered it is on this forum under another question.  I had to find it on my own but then I got confirmation from my son in law. I told him the story and that I solved it by Googling nar.  He was way ahead of me. When I Googled nar I found they are a Nikon file extension. Someone asked on a windows forum how to open them. It should only happens with a windows operating system.  The answer is nar is the extension for Nikon zip files and all I had to do is change the extension from nar to zip and they opened no problem and became jpg (or maybe jpeg files.)  They did change when I imported my jpg files into lightroom.  But it was my smart phone that changed them. I have a  Nokia lumia 520.phone it uses nikon zip files to save space. Most of my files came from my Canon camera but some came from my Nokia lumia 520. When I imported them with Light Room my smartphone changed all my jpgs into nar compressed files.   Normally it only happens  with a windows based computer and a Nikon camera.  It is not supported to happen with a Mac but my phone is a windows phone and it may have been attached to my computer when I imported the files. In any case the phone was at fault. But I as my son in law said the pictures are a lot shaper now and they are all grouped together by date so I am much better off.
