Pictures/photos gone from finder sidebar

I never used and photo apps such as iPhoto or Photo Booth. I always just kept my photos organized in folders within the 'my Pictures' tab on the sidebar in FINDER. That tab just disappeared when I updated to the new OS Yosemite. I can't find any of my thousands of photos from over the years. The My Pictures tab used to be right there under Applications, Downloads, etc. Where is it?

open the Finder Preferences:
click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward, the go to the Finder menu in the main menu bar and click Preferences.
Click the "Sidebar" tab in the Preferences panel and enable "Pictures".

  • Photos gone from finder

I just installed the mac update today for snow leopard on my 2011 macbook pro. Now all of the sudden "Photos" is gone from places in finder. Before this update I was able to navigate to pictures I imported from memory cards now the only way to get to these pictures are to go to pictures >iphoto library > right click then show package contents> then random numbered folders - nothing is organized.
If I go to upload pictures to facebook, twitter or photoshop I can find all of my folders under media - but this location does not exist in finder.
Everything was working fine before this update.
Is this happening to anyone else? anyway to display albums in finder? I have a feeling I am missing something right in front of my face.

Accessing your files this way is not supported and a pretty good way to trash your Library.

And thats exactly how you do it.
No there is no way to "display albums in the Finder". They don't exist in the FInder. Iphoto is a database nd it tracks the decisons you make in the database. So, for instance, an Album is really an instruction recorded on the database to "Display this group of pics together in this arrangement"

  • Removing items from Finder sidebar

I have folders and documents in finder sidebar, which I cannot remove. They do not disappear in a puff of smoke. They just zap back to where they were. This includes a now empty folder. Any thoughts?

If you have installed Developer Tools on your Mac then you can delete individual aliases in the Finder sidebar, using Property List Editor, which you'll find in Developer > Applications > Utilities.
In your Home folder go to User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Control-right click and choose Open With > Property List Editor.
Scroll down to "useritems" and click the grey arrow next to it to reveal contents.
Click the arrow next to CustomListItems and you'll see a list of entries marked "Item" with a numeric suffix.
Click the grey arrow next to the Item whose number corresponds to the sidebar alias that you want to get rid of and you'll see the info associated with that entry, including its name, as seen in the sidebar.
If it's the right one, click again on the Item header (i.e. "Item x") and hit delete.
Quit Property List Editor and Save changes.
Quit and relaunch Finder and the Item you've just deleted will be gone from the sidebar list.
(Note: if you haven't already installed Developer Tools then you'll find it in the Optional Installs folder on your MacOS X installer DVD.)

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, all my pictures are gone from iPhoto.  What happened?

This is very upsetting.  ALL my pictures are gone from iPhoto.  What happened, and how can I get them back?

Look in your user folder/Pictures. Is the Library there?
    Try rebuilding the library.

  • How to not downscale photos shared from Finder to Twitter?

OS X Mountain Lion seems to downscale photos shared from Finder to Twitter. How to prevent that from happening?
    Thanks.

Just drag an image from the MobileMe Gallery to a project it will copy the image, not move it. Aperture will move images that are stored locally in the library but since these images uploaded by friends are only stored on the MobileMe servers, Aperture will make a copy when you drag them to a project.

  • Pictures gone from finder

I have made the photos icon disappear in a puff of smoke.
I could not 'undo' this move. It is gone from the finder window.
I was dragging it down into the dock, and then it disappered.
Does anyone know how to get it back into finder
    Thank you.

    Hi David!
The icons in the Sidebar, and also in the Dock, are merely Aliases, or Shortcuts, to the original folder or application, which is not affected, by the action of dragging off.
When you drag them off as you did, they will disappear, as you have seen.
The method that roam has posted will work to replace the Alias icon in the Sidebar.
When you drag the folder from your Home folder to the Sidebar, you must position it below the separator bar.
To put an Alias icon in the Dock, you can also open the folder where the application or folder resides, and position the cursor on the item, hold down on the mouse, drag the item to the Dock, and release the pressure on the mouse.
If the item is a folder, like your Pictures folder, drag it to the right of the separator bar.
If the item is an application, drag it to the left of the separator bar.
    Good Luck!

  • Pictures are gone from iPhoto

All of my pictures seem to be gone from iPhoto. I can see them as an icon when go to "open" in PhotoShop, but iPhoto has nothing in its library.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Lost unknown item from Finder sidebar

    Hi,
I just accidentally deleted an item from the Finder sidebar, under the "Devices" section. I don't know what it was but I think it may be important. Is there any way to find out?
    Thanks,
    Bruce

    Hi.
Don't fret too much about it.  The Finder Sidebar is just one way to access items on your Mac.  Items can be added and removed from the sidebar all day, but they still reside on your hard drive.
To see how it works in 10.8 (not sure about 10.6)  select an item, a file on your desktop for example and press ⌘T. The item should now display on the sidebar.
To remove a sidebar item, press ⌘ while you drag the item from the sidebar and it will disappear in a puff of smoke.
    Fun, huh?
    I hope this is helpful.
EDIT - See this Apple link.

  • Remove Shared option from Finder Sidebar in OSX 10.5

    Afternoon all
We are using a small number of iMac’s in our network, all of which are still using OSX 10.5 (v10.5.8). As our network is predominantly Microsoft based, we have no central control over the iMac’s, thus any configuration of them is done locally via the Workgroup Manager (WMG).
We have locked the iMac’s down using the WMG to prevent our end users from accessing certain applications etc.... However one default item that is still in place that is causing us concern is the Shared option in the Finder sidebar. If a user clicks on the Shared option, they can browse all the shared folders; and see all the devices attached to the network (Desktops, Servers etc…)
We know that you can disabled the Shared option for the current user by click on Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. However we cannot see a similar option to disable it via the WMG. We cannot seem to find either a specific plist file for the sidebar that we could edit and use for all users.
    This raises two questions:
Does the WMG for 10.5 allow you to disable items in the sidebar like the Shared option?
If it cannot, do the newer version of OSX/WMG have this functionality?
Any help/pointers would be appreciated to get this issue resolved

    Morning
Sorry for the delay in replying.
The lockdown is being performed on the root account. As it is a local account and cannot see the domain, there are no items populated in the /User/Shared folder
As for editing the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file, if we could find a way of opening it so that its contents appear in a descriptive manner so that we could edited it, then that could be a possibility. However even if we could do that, how could we use that file so that every users picks these settings up everytime they login?

  • Dropbox missing from finder sidebar

About one week after upgrading a macbook with a new SSD and clean install of Mountain Lion, I suddenly lost all of my finder sidebar items except the icon of my computer. I was also unable to check any options in the Finder prefs to get these to show back up. I deleted two Finder preference system plist files recommended from the support community and that got all of my Apple sidebar items working again. However, I no longer have a sidebar item for dropbox and cannot figure out how to get it back. Am I going to have to just uninstall dropbox and reinstall it? Quite the PIA.

nevermind, just dragged the silly folder back to the sidebar and all is well again.…sorry for mindless post

  • Accidently removed "applications" from finder sidebar

I thought it would be a cool idea to drag my applications folder from my finder sidebar into my dock for easy access. But when I tried to drag it in I actually removed it by mistake (I got the poof of smoke.) How can I get it back? I tried to edit-undo, but it won't let me. Thanks.

Nevermind I figured it out. I used spotlight and then dragged the folder back in. Thanks anyway

  • Desktop gone from finder

I am switching to a mac from a pc...
from finder, i tried to drag desktop under places to the dock, so I could have 1 click to get to the desktop. I must have done something wrong, because i got a puff of cloud, like I was dragging something off the dock. The real problem is that it removed desktop from places in finder. How do I get that back in finder? Can I drag it to dock?
    Thanks
    bob

Go to the Preferences in Finder, select the Sidebar pane, and checkmark Desktop under Places. That will put the Desktop back in your sidebar.
As to putting it in the Dock, go to your user's Home folder (click your user name in the Finder sidebar). In your Home folder you'll find the "real" Desktop folder (the icon in the Sidebar is an alias and can't be put in the Dock directly) and you can drag that to the Dock. Make sure you drag the folder to the right side of the dashed bar in the Dock; only applications can go on the left side.
    Regards.

  • How to delete a Word doc that won't highlight from Finder sidebar

I have a Word 'doc' in the sidebar in Finder which no longer either highlights or opens (it used to). I would like to delete it. If I double tap it I get: Open Sidebar Preferences which doesn't help. I have tried Command and both command and option and, because it will not even select (i.e. highlight) I can't drag it to trash or delete it. Any ideas how to delete it? I have successfully removed other Word docs from the sidebar.

    CMD-Drag, works for me.

  • After update 5.4.1, I can no longer access TC from Finder sidebar

Time Machine can backup just fine (and it seems improved), but now when I click on the icon of my Time Capsule in the Finder sidebar, I see "connecting...", but eventually the connection times out.
Has anyone gotten this to work, or do I have to downgrade the firmware? Nice job, Apple!

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

  • Remove a DEAD Shared NAS from Finder Sidebar

I have a dead Shared NAS device that is stuck in my Finder Sidebar and I did everything I found online to solve the issue and have it removed and no success.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
