Pictures to remote users but not to local users

We use iChat a LOT to send pictures- I have employees working remotely, and we routinely pase screen shots, via clipboard, to iChat. This is a wonderful thing.
But you know what? It will not work locally: anyone here in the office cannot receive or send pictures. The message that we get: 'AIM error. An AIM error has occurred. Unable to talk directly to your buddy'.
I don't know what kind of info about our system to post here that would be important to help out, but I'll try. We have a small LAN of 6 computers. We access the internet through a NetGear Router, which, incidently, is fairly heavily configured so that I can access any of my computers remotely via Timbuktu, and for other reasons and servers.
This almost seems like a port-related issue, except that sending pictures to an address outside the LAN is smooth and clean.
Ideas?

As far as I am aware the Bonjour side should be able to send file.
Bonjour uses different ports to the AIM side of iChat
You will need to make sure the ports 5297, 5298 and 5353 are open in the MAc Firewall if it is on and in the modem.
All need the UDP protocol and 5298needs TCP as in the places where it is specified.

I don't know if this is a really noob ou really tricky question, but here it goes : )
I'd like to add a/some picture(s) to a iDVD theme, but not in the drop zones. I'd like my pictures to appear as layers, choose whoch one goes in front, and so on...
Is there any way to do that?

In that case you would need to prepare the background as a QT movie exactly the way you want to display it as a background movie and then drag and drop that prepared QT file to iDVD.
I've never done this type of movie in iLife apps alone but I have with FCP & DVD SP which offers these additional video editing options for sizing pip and frames in an existing movie / menu.
Also check the help Menu for iDVD6 (and iMovie) if you haven't already. I did a search for you and here's what I came up with:
Changing the background image of a DVD menu
You can replace the background image in a menu with your own image. Images in menu backgrounds are cropped to fit the standard DVD window size, but the aspect ratio of the original image is preserved. If you want your image to fit the DVD window exactly, first use an image-editing application to resize the image to 640 x 480 for standard video and 854 x 480 for widescreen.
When you replace a background image, you can also choose to keep the drop zones or remove them completely.
Here are ways to change the background image:
Drag a picture file from the Finder or the Media pane to a DVD menu background, outside a drop zone. Before you drop the picture, press the Command key and choose "Replace background" or "Replace background and drop zones" from the contextual menu that appears (shown above). Then release the mouse button.
Click the Menu button and drag a picture file from the Finder to the background well in the Menu pane. If your theme has drop zones, the drop zones disappear.
Click the Media button, then click Photos. Drag a photo from your iPhoto library or another folder to your DVD menu. If your theme has drop zones, the drop zones are retained.
Choose File > Import > Image, locate and select an image, and click Import. If your theme has drop zones, the drop zones are retained.
To remove a background image and return to the default image for the theme, click the Menu button and drag the image out of the background well (shown above).

Studio 2 can create/see remote servers but not in remote deployment

In Sun Studio Creator 2, I can create and see my remote servers but when I try to remote deploy my web app from "Deploy to Remote Server", my remote servers do not show up on the list (Only Add Remote Server is there).
On my laptop with the same version of SSC, this is not a problem (I can see the remote servers in the deployment list) so I suspect that the problem is just on my desktop machine. The remote server settings are the same on both machines.
I have tried reinstalling SSC with no success. If anyone has run into this or have any suggestions on how to fix this, I would appreciate it.

Web package, containing mix of html/js/swf, works off remote server but not locally

I have been using Cisco certification training materials for
months now and have had no problems. Except today.
The front index.html page, which links to swf content,
stopped redirecting me to individual chapters.
Normally, I get a front page, containing flash animation, and
a drop down list of chapters. On picking a chapter, a new,
full-screen browser window opens up. Now, I get the front page,
with its flash animation, but when I pick a chapter, nothing
happens. (The big window does not open up.)
I am using Firefox 2.0.0.13 on an intel-based macbook pro.
I have flash player MAC 9,0,124,0 installed (it was ,115 but
I installed the new version in the hopes that it would fix the
problem - to no avail).
Nothing in my machine or setup has changed.
The Error Console of firefox reports:

This seems to be a javascript problem ? But javascript does
not give errors on other pages. I think it may be a problem of
interaction between javascript and flash.
NOTHING has changed on my laptop since I last used the Cisco
training materials on 10 April. This is very baffling to me!
My hunch is that some software was updated on my machine -
probably flash software - and this has impacted the application.
I have tried the following:
- tried running the material on Safari, but had exactly the
same behaviour as above. However, I never tried running the
material on Safari, so I cannot say that it worked before.
- tried running the material on a Windows Parallels emulator
on the mac, and had exactly the same behaviour as above. Again, it
had never worked on that platform/environment.
- i installed a debug version of the flash player - there
were no odd messages in the log at all.
- i uninstalled flash and then reinstalled an older version -
same behaviour.
- i noticed that the Error console lists a lot of warning
messages to do with Javascript.
- i ran the materials off the official Cisco server, not from
a local copy as detailed above. i had no problems (a big window
opened up).
HELP!

FPGA Compile error on remote compile worker - but not on local!?

When i compile using Rebuild for building my VI to FPGA on NI cRio-9082 I get this:
Then I kill the compile worker on the develop machine, to use remote compile worker.

Should the timing constrains not be the same?

Brad and I took a closer look at the Xilinx log and we see a line printed that will hopefully help us narrow down the problem. Immediately after completion of the Analysis phase the log has the following line recorded:

It seems there is a problem with the linux worker attempting to free the same memory twice which may be causing the compiler to exit during the mapping phase. We have a few more questions and would like to take a closer look into things for you.
1. Will any other designs compile succesfully on this linux worker (even very basic VIs)?
2. If other designs compile, will a simpler version of this design still fail consistently?
3. If the failed compilation seems to be design specific, would you be willing to provide your design for us to try and reproduce the failure?

Managing Computers with 10.5 Server, but NOT managing Local accounts?

I'll try my best to be clear here - I'm new to 10.5 Server and a functioning Open Directory environment! (formerly used 10.3 Server and never had the OD working).
Environment:
School (K-8), with old iMac G3's (10.3.9), eMacs (10.4.11) and a smattering of Mini's and iMacs (10.5.x).
Server:
10.5 Server, OpenDirectory and DNS appear to be working perfectly.
User Accounts:
Staff members have accounts for logging into sharepoints.
No one (yet!) has server based home directories except a couple for testing.
On each computer there is a "staff" account and a "student" account.
These are LOCAL accounts, and do NOT have same-named accounts on the Server.
I have bound client computers to the Server by OpenDirector

Now comes the trouble;
I have added the computers to the Workgroup Manager computers list.
I have applied computer preference settings for the Energy Saver preferences ONLY. THey appear to have worked (managed computers slept/shut-down/started up according to the managed preference).
NOW comes the real problem;
The "staff" account on the managed computers is denying access to most applications on the computer!
Note: this "Staff" account is local ONLY, and is NOT a server-hosted account.
I have NOT tried to manage the computer preferences for applications on these computers.
I can resolve the problem by unbinding the computer from the OD Server - but I'd prefer not to do that. I just got them all bound! And, it screws up my migration plan TOWARDS server-hosted home directories.
I have tried managing application prefs for a COMPUTER, only to have both the STaff and Student account lose ALL of their local-only application managment settings (all of a sudden, Students can open terminal, grading programs, etc).
I am obviously missing something!
At this point, I'd like to back up... to NOT having my Server interfereing with the local accounts until I'm further along mapping out my migration from local-only accounts with file sharing access to Server hosted accounts and server managed preferences.
(I will also admit I'm a bit confused about when to manage USER preferences, vs when to use managed COMPUTER preferences.).

Your last question - using managed user vs. computer preferences got my attention. Mostly, I use Group managed preferences. I do use computer preferences for a laptop cart, other than that I use group preferences. Perhaps your situation calls for managing users, but using group preferences allows me to change the settings for a bunch of people all at once rather than changing settings for each user.
In any event, check all the managed preferences for your computer level settings. And since you're using a 10.5 server, you have to check the settings for clients that are running 10.4 and earlier as well as the settings for 10.5 and later clients, as they are different.
At the user level, if you have an OD account and a local account with the same name, the local account will determine what the user can do - I honestly don't know if managed computer prefs will override local settings, but you should look into it. This could be your problem.
At the very least, you should avoid "testing" with systems that folks are using if you want to avoid the frustration that you are now encountering (speaking from experience i.e. similar mistakes, not preaching).

Permissions to add workstation to domain but not login locally

I've found several posts describing how to setup an account that can be used to add a machine to AD Domain. But after trying it I found that account could also be used to login to that same machine locally. If I try to deny logon locally permission
to the account I create it can not longer add the machine to the domain.
So my question it: Is it possible to setup a AD user account that can add a machine to a Domain, that can re-add a machine to a domain (which I think needs some delete permissions to remove the old machine account), and can not log on locally to this
or any workstation in the domain?
In case it matters I'm still using an AD in a Server 2008R2 domain.

According to your error message, it is limited by access is denied.
So to solve the problem, please add the complete set of permission to allow the appropriate users to rejoin the computer accounts in Active Directory.
During my test, these permissions are necessary:
     Create Computer objects
    Delete Computer objects
     Reset Password
     Read and write Account Restrictions
     Validated write to DNS host name
     Validated write to service principal name

Desktop Pictures missing in preferences but not in Library...

When I go to change my desktop picture in system preferences and I click on a folder (like "nature" or "abstract"), the pics in that category do not appear and the preview screen stays blank. I checked and the files are still under Library->Desktop Pictures and I can select them from there if a add a new folder to the system preferences desktop pics list. The problem is that this should not be happening... anyone have a fix?

Not a fix but something I found out the hard way.. When I use quartz images that do not have the same size as my desktop and I scale them to fit my desktop size my graphics in general give trouble. Screen savers that will not run in test mode. Screen savers running black in the background, Photo Booth issues. Depth of the screen is reduced. If you use custom desktop pictures don't resize them to fit your screen, center them or just have them full screen. They somehow don't scale well.

I can only see album pictures on Facebook in thumbnail size, when I open the picture it will not load. I can open these pictures on other computers but not mine.

I cant open album pictures on facebook on my computer, but i can on others. I can see pictures thumbnail size, so I can still see pictures, but when I go to open them to see them full size it will not load or show up.

Check the image exceptions: Tools > Options > Content: Load Images: Exceptions - See [[Options window - Content panel]]
A way to see which images are blocked is to click the favicon (Site Identification icon) on the left side of the location bar. 
A click on the "More Information" button will open the Security tab of the "Page Info" window (also accessible via "Tools > Page Info"). 
Open the Media tab of the "Page Info" window. 
Select the first image and scroll down though the list with the Down arrow key. 
If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "Block Images from..." then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.

Mails shows picture of Addressbook entry but not for LDAP entries

We have a LDAP server working nicely in the company, its integrated into Addressbook and works well when composing new mail.
But... for incoming mails, Mail.app does show the picture of the sender IF AND ONLY IF the server has a addressbook entry. Thats nice, but does not work for LDAP entries.
I would really appreciate Mail supporting to retrieve pictures from LDAP as well (e.g. querying it with senders email address) - does anybody a plugin for Mail.app supporting this or will Apple support this one day?

I have experienced this and it was because I removed the placeholder and just added the image on the entry page. I duplicate blog entries and delete content to add new stuff so don't have to reformat every time, if you do that don't remove the image just add on the top - it should replace the previous image. Hope this helps, it is frustrating at times but the more you learn the easier it becomes.

Pictures showing on ipod but not on pc

Hi all my ipod touch says it has 1250 pics on it, i can view them all via ipod bu, when connected to pc it says there is no pictures and i have 100% free storage, how do i get my pictures back onto pc from ipod or even print them out off ipod or transfer to other device,

the pictures were synced from my pc, i had a backup of them too on a external HD but unfortunately my system crashed and i lost both copies, only copy i have left is on my ipod, when i connect to the pc it says there is no pictures but i can clearly view and scroll through 1250 of them, will a programme like phoneview find them on my ipod if the computer wont ? if so do i need to purchase this programme or are they available to download

Looks like what you want is to mirror the image on both diaplys. This is an easy fix.
Go into System Preferences -> Displays, then goo into the "Arrangement" tab and check "Mirror Displays".
This should give you the desired result.
