Ping ICMP TCP UDP turn off service or overkill
WRT54G router I can block service of PING. Should I block ICMP, TCP, and UDP, all three? Is this overkill? The router has a firewall and the modem also has a route and firewall. aDSL. Westell 2200. I read that this is not a problem really because even with pinging, my IP is kept hidden? I saw that a TracerRoute cannot trace me because of this so there is some stealthiness. I went to GRC.com which said I was pingable but everything else was tight, which was unusual. Probably because I shut off File Sharing and did some UnBinding and even removed Client for Microsoft Network which was the NetBIOS? But PINGing. I called tech support but they were not really familiar with this. It seems simple to do but I would ask first. ICMP is the Internet protocol for all machines, servers and what not? TCP is the layer for our individual computers. Just asking
I think the westell modem is giving private IP address to router. So the public IP address from ISP would be on your modem. So settings regarding all this would be on modem's interface. Just go thru them, and check it.

I can see it on with showplatform on the SC. There are no HW faults in this server. Does anyone know how to turn of this led?

it's the frame manager that has the fault light.
That's an old quirk that is specific to that rack component.
It has (essentially) no impact on whatever systems are installed to the rack.
It is usually just a visual annoyance.
Use your service contract and open a support case with Sun.
That will give them a chance to help you check on everything.
They'll walk you through the correct steps of power-cycling the frame manager.
That can be done while the servers are happily serving. -
I lost my iPhone 4s and it is dead. Question about iCloud and turning off service.
I lost my iPhone 4s and it is dead. On iCloud I utilized the lost mode, so when someone finds my phone and charges it, my house phone number will pop up. But if I turn the service off on that phone, is that message from iCloud still going to pop up? Or do I have to keep the service on that phone on in order for icloud to still send the message?
The only way to locate/disable/erase any lost/stolen iPhone is through Find My Phone or a similar app. However, this requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before it was lost/stolen. You would then login at iCloud.com & try to locate it. This requires the phone be turned on & have an Internet connection. There is no other way to locate a lost/stolen iPhone. Apple can't/won't help you, nor will your carrier. Report the loss to the Police, your carrier & Insurance company. Change all of your passwords.
If your carrier offers Blacklisting & they Blacklist the phone, it will be unusable as a phone.
If locked with a passcode, all a thief or whoever finds it has to do is force the phone into recovery mode & restore it. While this deletes all data on the phone, it also removes the passcode so the phone can then be used as a phone or touch. -

In Slackware I use the following comands:
Block off all in /etc/inetd.conf
Block off in /etc/services everything except
ssh 22/tcp #Secure Shell Login

syslog 514/udp
And then run the comand /etc/rc.d/rc.inetd restart
But /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/rc./rc.inetd don´t excist in Arch :?:

Arch uses xinetd by default.

Oh, and you don't have to block anything if you didn't enable xinetd in your /etc/rc.conf DAEMONS line. If you did enable it just edit xinted config like you did with inetd. I guess you can also restart xinetd with /etc/rc.d/xinetd restart.

Also check other daemons that may be running without xinetd with open ports. Disable everything you don't need in rc.conf and/or configure daemons' configs or use iptables to restrict access. There is a lot of info out there in the forums and google of course. -

Let me just say that I didn't get the answer I wanted from contacting apple care and the customer service rep was very rude and gave me what seemed like a short answer just to get me off the line. So here I am hoping that someone can give me a straight answer.
I have an iPhone 4S and I have not had cellular service associated with it for over a year now. It's basically acting as an iPod touch right now.
Yesterday I took a car trip to Boston with my wife and I was playing around with google maps. I had loaded our destination prior to leaving our home so the route information was still loaded. I have my 4s on airplane mode all the time so constantly searching for a signal wouldn't drain my battery. I turn wifi off when I'm not in a hotspot for the same reason as well. So as I was looking at our route info I noticed that the little node that indicates your position was moving along with our corresponding location almost as accurate as any other gps. This concerns me because
1- I have no service on this phone
2- airplane mode is enabled
3- wifi is disabled
Now the even weirder thing is that my son has a nexus tablet. Just strictly wifi. We pulled into a rest stop and conveniently it had free wifi. So I loaded our route info onto his Google device. When we got back on the road I turned wifi off on his tablet and SHOCKER the node was moving along with our position.
I want to know why my iPhone 4S running on iOS 7.0.4 is receiving gps data when all of the supporting features are turned off. As an added concern I would like to know why my sons wifi-only tablet is receiving gps data as well.
What is apple doing with its devices or what is google doing to their devices and/or application software.
Thank you to whoever helps me out with this.Because GPS has nothing to do with WiFi, cellular signals, or data of any sort. GPS is implemented by signals sent by satellites that are received by GPS receivers. The receivers process the information from the GPS satellites and calculate your location. GPS never sends data anywhere; GPS functionality is receive only.
If you have WiFi or cellular data turned on this can improve the accuracy of GPS, because the GPS receiver can then use the known location of cell towers and WiFi networks to refine the GPS location. GPS by itself has an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 34 feet. Using the additional information from WiFi and cellular data this can be brought down to 3 meters (10 feet). This mode is called Augmented GPS, or A-GPS. -

How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius. Still nothing has worked. I'm still stuck with Genius offering the same apps to me. Mind you, once I click on the App Store there is nothing I can do but swipe left and right. There's absolutely nothing at the bottom of the screen like a features tab, nothing. There is, however, a categories button at the top, but that's it. Irrelevant.
FWIW, I just got off the phone with Apple technical support about this. I use Genuis for creating playlists, so I don't want to disable it, but Apple support confirmed that there is no way to avoid syncing Genius data without disabling Genius altogether. I'd read somewhere else that subscribing to iTunes Match might allow you to avoid this, but that is NOT the case, as I've confirmed, and Apple support has confirmed. For me, it routinely syncs thousands genius of items, so I have to allow a lot of time for my manual syncs.

49 Service Error - Turn Off then On - LaserJet Pro 200 M276nw
I was adding to another post for a different printer but didn't want anyone with MY printer to MISS this problem.
***UPDATE*** (at least for my LaserJet Pro 200 M276nw)
I have found the root cause but will need further assistance from someone at HP to "solve" this one....
My new M276nw keeps throwing a 49 Service Error, chat support yielded alot of power off, power on, wait, try again blah blah blah, fuser problems blah blah. 10 minutes of forum searching put me onto possible wireless networking issues with other printers and SSID's. Anyway after returning one printer to Staples and having the problem come up again on a another brand new one....Tried Forum searching & Tada! at least I got to find a root cause.
I have a D-Link DIR-825 wireless router. It has dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz).
Normally I have both enabled for the myriad of devices that people have these days in my home.
I updated the firmware to the latest update (20121026) then restarted.
Received the 49 Service Error shortly after restart.
Then I disabled both bands to test each wireless band independently.
The printer acted normally so I decided to enable each band seperately.
When I enable the 2.4 GHz band in the router, the printer immediately throws a 49 Service Error.
I tested this several times (5 to be exact) and each time during the router reboot the printer indicated the error.
So I left the 2.4 GHz band disabled and went on to the 5 GHz band.
I enabled the 5 GHz band 3 times and disabled it and found no effect on the printer (at least within a 5 minute window).
So now I'm left with only a single band wireless router or a printer that likes to restart itself every 20 minutes or so.
There is probably a setting (or 2) that can be tweaked in either the router or the printer that can prevent this (I hope).
I just need to find the right HP person............

View Solution.I really wish I could help but I am afraid this is a bit beyond my level of comprehension. What I took from this was, you have to turn off the duel band feature to get the printer to work without that error message, correct? The User Guide may help you but when I tried to read it my mind was blown away by just how many settings could be adjusted to fit your needs. No need to do anything troulbeshooting-wise just yet. All I need for you to do is look at page 137 on how to set sleep delay and auto power down functions and page 132 for link and duplex settings and let me know if you think it could be something to do with these.
As far as a setting within the router, I do not know. I did find another user guide with very technical information in it. The Software Technical Reference hinted to bi-directional printing which basically turns off or on the print spooler if the printer was so big it was using up network resources but I am not sure of that at all (see Page 59 for an example). Page 89 and on is a brief introduction to the embedded web server but really these are just definitions, nothing new to report there.
This website hints that it may be a firmware error. Lastly, the only other thing I can offer as you have probably seen it yourself is another HP forum thread regarding your exact error. I know I won't be of much assistance but some hopefully is better than none. I'm just glad it works partially. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you but this is just a step out of my league. Good luck!

Sounds like a hardware failure.
Make an appointment at the genius bar and take it in for them to look at. It will probably need to be replaced. -
Web Services spontaneous turning off on Color LaserJet CM4540 MFP
We are using ePrint on four seperate Color LaserJet CM4540 Multifunction printers in a business environment where we elected to activate ePrint in order to allow wireless printing for our iPhone and iPad users. We were able to set it up and get it working, and for the most part it works great! Users testing the functionality are using the HP ePrint for Home and Biz app and so far they've reported no loss of formatting for the documents they are printing - but there is one problem:
So far two of the printers have dropped (turned off) Web Services for no apparent reason.
Administrative functioning on the machines is password protected so it isn't possible for one of the clients to just come in and turn off Webservices. Only IT team members have the access password. I don't believe that any of us are turning off web services, so the impression is that they are spontaneously deactivating.
Two other bits of relevant information:
1) I am able to easily re-activate web services and assign a new eprint email address to the printer...
2) I'm not able to reassign the first eprint email address to the printer because the HP ePrint website automatically places lost/disgarded email addresses on hold for 6 months to reduce the chance of people mistakenly sending documents to someone else's printer.
Therein lies the crux of the problem: because we are in a business user environment, every time I have to assign a new email address to the printer, I'm forced to update the documentation for the end users reflecting the addresses of the printers, and to inform the users who are already using the service of the new address.
I need to figure out a way to either 1) prevent the web service from shutting down, or 2) retain the same email address in the event that it does shut down, or both.

Frankly, i am not familier with the secondary DHCP structure of the device as i am more focused on consumer products, however the logic still remains the same... As long as DHCP can be maintaned, i cannot see any reason why the static IP will fail as the connectivity remain the same, therefore i would recommend you to disable the secondary DHCP in order to avoid any firewall blocks after forwarding the ports.
The port forwarding should be assigned from the router or the server, depanding on your network structure.
If you are using a more complex network envoirnment by using any server, VPN, switch, etc. you will need to contact your IT administrator to configure the port forwarding
However if you are using a simpler network , please let me know the router model, i will gladly try to assist you locating the steps for your envoirnment.

First, quit all running applications and test again -

I am working with Georgia DOT and we have created an app to track our state vehicles using IPhone 5. My question is: will an iPhone automatically turn off location services? If it goes below a certain battery power level, and if so how do you disable this in settings.
Message was edited by: mickyelI don't believe that this will happen, however, the entire iPhone will shut down when the iPhone reaches the auto-shutdown power level. There is no way to turn that Off other that connecting the iPhone to power.

Even with restrictions on location services for icloud turn off
I have been on the forums a b-jillion times looking up this same question. Our phones (hubs and I 4 and 4s) continually turn off the "find my iphone" bit in location services. I have locked it in restrictions after turning it on-passcode locked it. I have tried everything multiple times and yet it still happens on both of our phones, though his more than mine! Now my phone is gone and I put an erase order in almost immediately as it was taken out of my car. It says it will happen the next time it is connected to the internet. I check icloud often...nothing. Then, fifteen days later someone is using my facebook acct! It still doesn't show up on icloud as ever erasing or connecting to the internet!! What the.....?
Hi there I was having the same issues myself an I know it can be a pain because its a real battery drainer. The tip I have that worked for me is I went to location services and one by one I turned off each individual apps location service until the arrow went off so I was able to quickly find the app that was causing the issues (allow about 5 or so seconds between each app after you turn if off) after you find the bad app you can go into that apps settings to try to fix it. Or for me the app never stopped searching my location even with the app fully closed. ( so I deleted the app ) I hope this tip helps out
