Ping iTunes server to update XML feed

Help!! I have tried to ping the server following the instructions on the Tech Specs page (http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/techspecs.html), but whenever I put the URL w/podcast id into my browser, I simply get an error message back from Apple and the XML file is not updated immediately.
Here's the URL I used:
https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=108627247 where the id is my podcast (Harpeth Hall LIbrary). Am I missing something?
Here's the error message:
The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
An invalid character was found in text content. Error processing resource 'https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.wo...

I received an answer from a different forum - the ping command works; however, the browser cannot parse the XML message sent back from the server, which is why there is an error message. I could also add a <ttl> tag to the feed file asking the iTunes server to check my file every "x" hours (see the Tech Spec) which eliminates the need to ping the server.

  • Has ping feed changed to update xml feed?

Has the link to ping the itunes store to have your podcast updated changed? I have uploaded the revised xml file for my podcast but my new episodes are not showing in the store. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    This is the link
    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=

Your link is incomplete, missing the podcast ID number. Also please always post the feed URL as well when you have a query.
Pinging is supposed to draw the Store's attention to the fact that you've revised your feed and get it cached quickly, but I'm not convinced that it makes any difference: it's certainly not necessary. All you have to do is add episodes to the feed and reupload it. It usually takes 1-2 days for new episodes to appear in the Store, though subscribers will see them immediately (since their iTunes application is reading the feed directly).

The call was intended to be basically a one-way notification. No real return value per se other than the http 200 success header if your message is received. Having said that, it's certainly pretty gross looking if you ping in a browser. A bug has been filed against this behavior so that in the future you can get a more friendly assurance in a web browser that your ping went through. In the meantime you might consider just pinging on the command line like this:
    curl -I https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=108627247
If it was received by the iTMS server, you'll see:
    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
in the output. That 200 means the ping was received not that it has run yet.

  • TS2529 itunes will not access the istore or itunes server for updates

I can not access the istore or itunes server from my itunes page...any articles or links on this???

    Hi, tsgeisel,
iTunes can access CDDB for track information after a CD has been imported into iTunes by using the Advanced menu option I mentioned in my previous post.
If you want to check it out, import a CD when you're not connected to the internet - or with Automatically retrieve CD track names from internet unchecked in your iTunes Importing Preferences.
After the CD has been imported there will be no track information included. But if you then select the tracks - all together, one at a time or in any combination you desire - and select Get CD Track Names, you will be pleasantly surprised.

  • ITunes U Not Updating XML Collection

In September, we added the SEI podcast collection to CMU's iTunes U site. In October, we think it stopped working due to some odd characters in the feed. The characters have been removed for a couple of weeks now, and iTunes U hasn't picked up the new episodes yet. Do you know what we have to do to fix the problem?
Here is the podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/itunes-u/software-engineering-institute/id566573552? mt=10
Here is the XML (looks valid to us): http://www.sei.cmu.edu/podcasts/files_podcasts/itunesFeed.xml
    Thanks,

    Ben;
I've been dealing with the same issue since last Tuesday (Tennessee Dept. of Education). On Tuesday afternoon, I published a new collection (Effective Practice Series), and it eventually showed up the following morning.
On Thursday afternoon, I added an additional track to this collection. Like your experience, it displays correctly in "Preview", but has yet to show up in the iTunes desktop application (Oddly enough, the new track DOES show up in the "Quick View" mode, but won't play. But when you open the Collection, the new track does not appear).
The new track DOES appear on both my iPad and iPhone, and I can preview the new track on both devices.
I contacted Apple iTunes U support, and they suggested that post on the discussion site, so that Apple's engineers who monitor the site could track the issue. I did receive a reply from one of Apple's engineers, but the problem persists (see related thread: "Site Manager Update Issue").
Hopefully, there will be an answer soon. All the best...

  • Help, in a right mess! Primary problem is getting Itunes server to update.

My Iphone took a bath today, I have dismantled and dried out and fortunatly it is working, sort of! The phone will power up as far as the Apple logo but no further. With connected to PC Itunes recognises it and will sync and back up (although hitting the app tab causes Itunes to freeze) I was assuming the next best move was to do a restore as assuming Im having a software issue.
However if I try to restore or update to ios 5 I get the message that Itunes cannot connect to the server. I've tried restarting the PC, the internet connect is good, can get onto Istore and have done Itunes diagnostic and it says the internet connection is good. Am at a loss really as to what to do now. Ive tried a second PC and that cannot update on Itunes either and I've tried another internet connection and the same problem.
I recently updated ITunes with no problem so cannot see a firewall problem , any thoughts anyone, I want my phone back!

Plug it into the computer. If you have no cable then places like the apple store or maybye radio shack should have one. Then go to music and delete whatever you need also incase you wanted to know to buy you need a computer unlike the iphone

  • ITunes Server w/ updated metadata

Looking to set up an Xserve as a music server (xserve is already being used for other purposes, so might as well make it serve music). Will retain all metadata (play count, last played, etc).
Is there a solution that will allow clients that are accessing the shared music library to do things like increment play count?
If one can share a library through an entire house, it would be nice to allow the owner of a library to control client's effect on this info. (In a multi-user house I can see how you wouldn't want every user to affect your metadata (and presumably those users have thier own library), and that is the default behavior. But what about the whole media center idea? If you have just one user in a house with multiple machines, or a few users that you want treated as one, then Apple really should allow this information to be altered, independent of what machine is being used. If a machine can play it, it should be able to update this data.)
Is there a solution out there for this? (Have to be automated. Shouldn't have to manually update this info for every single track.)
Or should this be a feature request for another rev of iTunes, and just hope that it is adopted?
Only solution I have now is to use ARD to log into to server, but that isn't the best approach.

    This might help:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/02/tuaw-how-to-use-your-itunes-library-over-airport- disk/
It worked better with itunes 8. I am having some problems with the upgrade.
The best is to have a server running itunes and sharing the super library though.

  • No Preview or Download With My XML feed

I have created an XML feed for my podcasts per the Apple specs and everything is working great EXCEPT my mp3's are uploaded to a streaming server. My feed reflects the URL of the mp3 file on the streaming server.
The itunes store will not play these podcasts. No preview or anything. So, I moved the mp3 off from the streaming server to a regular web server. Updated the feed....and all is good!
So, the problem is now I will have to have these files in two locations. One on my streaming server and one on my web server. Not good joo joo. So, is it possible for itunes to use the streaming server URL? Do I need to change something in my feed or will I be stuck with having the files in two locations?

iTunes does not stream podcast files. So I think you are stuck unless you can make one server do both.

  • Help Itunes! - Pinging, podcast not getting updated.

My itunes podcast ID is: 73331535
To relieve my server of bandwidth, I recently moved my podcasts to libsyn. Unfortunately libsyn, reported that my feed wasn't to be public. I discovered this problem immediately and fixed the rss to not report that I didn't want to be listed. That was 4 days ago. I have pinged itunes over and over again, at least twice a day. My new podcast url (http://infidelguy.libsyn.com/rss)is registering fine on the ping page but my podcast is NOT showing up in itunes. It validates fine via RSS validation tools.
    Can someone please help?
    Thank you in advance.

Did you leave the original feed and do this from the Apple - iTunes - Podcasts - Techncal Specifications document:
    <itunes:new-feed-url>
This tag allows you to change the URL where the podcast feed is located. It is added at the <channel> level. The feed format is:
    <itunes:new-feed-url>http://newlocation.com/example.rss</itunes:new-feed-url>
After adding the tag to your old feed, you should maintain the old feed for 48 hours before retiring it. At that point, iTunes will have updated the directory with the new feed URL. For more information, please see the “Changing Your Feed URL” section above.

  • Received HTTP error code 400 while fetching source feed. - Just Started 2 weeks ago; preventing iTunes podcast from updating

    Good day.
When trying to update my feed http://feeds.feedburner.com/SpiritLedSpiritFed, I received an HTTP error code 400 while fetching source feed message. Nothing has changed on my end as I've been using Dropbox for the feed and the files since last year and was able to successfully update the feed up to two weeks ago.
I did run through all the tools on the Feedburner page (validator, podmedic, feedmedic) received a clean bill of health on the feed and I've looked at both Feeburner's site as well as Dropbox's support page to see if anything could have changed (requiring https or some other format for the feed), but no luck so far.
The strange thing is that on the feed itself, it's listed as http://dl.dropbox.com/s/xxxxxxxxxx/xxxxxxxx.xml.  However, when I tried to 'RESYNC' it, the 400 error was displayed and it's listed as https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/xxxxxxxxxx.xml which is says it cannot reach.
Any suggestions would help as I've not been able to update my iTunes podcast for two weeks now.
    Thanks

The URL you give redirects to https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/466rh3k2kw7f6jr/SpiritLedSpiritFed.xml
This appears to be a viable feed. However it contains this tag:
    <itunes:new-feed-url>https://www.dropbox.com/s/466rh3k2kw7f6jr/SpiritLedSpiritFed.xml</itunes:new-feed-url>
That will redirect iTunes (though nothing else) to the enclosed URL, and that is a web page containing a display of the feed and a download button, which is no use to iTunes. Consequently on attempting to subscribe in iTunes with any of these URLs the feed comes up empty. You need to get rid of these redirects and provide a direct link to the feed file; and you should not use https (encrypted connection) but http. Also, Dropbox isn't a good place to host your files, but if you really must use it you have to serve as a direct access in the same way as a web page, not as sharing. You have your media files on Dropbox as well, and the URL redirects to an https version, though it does play in a browser. This itself may cause problems; and if your podcast gets popular you will run into problems as Dropbox isn't really geared to do this sort of thing.

  • Updating XML Code reflected in iTunes?

Okay so I originally submitted a podcast with a working XML feed, and it was accepted. However, since then I have changed the feed, to have different titles. The link to the actual mp3 is the same. I just changed the title of the group or the main title, whatever it's formally called, and the title of the podcast (not the name of the mp3) just how I want it to appear under the 'name' in iTunes.
So basically my question is, will iTunes periodically check the XML file and update these changes on iTunes? Or is there some way I need to manually do it.
    Thank you in advance!

Yes, it will show changes just as it will show new episodes, but expect it to take 1-2 days (occasionally more) for any changes to show.

  • My feed on iTunes is not updating

As a result of all the challenges I faced with updating our feed due to iDisk shutting down, we've had to create a brand new feed and we lost all history, feedback and subsribers. This was 11 years worth of activity. Now, with the new feed, I discovered a few weeks ago that the feed isn't updating. Please help.
    The feed is at: http://www.apologetics.com/podcast/Apologetics.comRadioShow.xml
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The image is correctly referenced in the feed and is present on the server. However it's very small - 140 x 141 px - Apple recommend 1400 x 1400. I doubt that the image being small would get it removed from the Store page (though it would prevent you being chosen as a featured podcast should that opportuinity arise).
You could try recreating the image at that size and using that instead - if you do this, give it a different file name or the Store won't know it's changed.
Otherwise, all you can do is wait - there have been other incidences of images mysteriously disappearing like this, and there's no obvious reason for it.

  • ITunes Store not updating after ping by number

I've read a few posts about the iTunes store not loading additional podcasts. I pinged it after an update last night and ahven't seen an update yet. So I have pinged it again and each time I get the successful ping message.
Is there a delay time that I should wait when doing the ping for an immediate update?
I should show about 10 podcasts but show only three in the store. I can download all 10 if I subscribe to my feed though.
    Your help is appriciated.

Ping is a network program to verify IP address availability. Has nothing to do with iTunes.
Don't under stand the problem. If subscribing to the feed gets you all the available episodes then what is your issue.

  • ITunes not updating RSS feed.

I am hoping someone will be able to help me figure this out:
After a hiatus of several months, I have started releasing new podcast episodes. The last episode in the iTunes store directory was Nov. 14, 2012.
In the last week I have released 2 new episodes, but since the content was time sensitive I backdated them. I changed the Nov. 14 podcast to July 20 and then added a September 15 and a February 22, 2013 episode.
The changes show up through iTunes software, but not in the iTunes store. It still shows the last episode as being Nov. 14, 2012. It has been 4 going on 5 days without any changes.
Also, iTunes is not displaying my podcast logo, even though I have uploaded a 1400 X 1400 jpeg.
I have checked and the podcast feed validates without a problem.
I am at a loss as to what to look for or try next. If anyone has any ideas I would be very appreciative for any advice.

    Hi Roger,
I contacted Apple and received this confusing reply (cut and paste below). It is confusing on 2 counts; 1) My feed validates just fine and 2) within minutes of receiving it, iTunes updated my feed to show 2 missing episodes.
Still, the artwork is not showing and I posted another (backdated) episode over a week ago and it still hasn't shown up in the store yet either.
I am wondering if I should resubmit my feed as the Apple support email suggests but do not want to loose my current subscribers.
    Any thoughts?
This is the email I received from Apple:
    Dear Malcolm,
Welcome to iTunes Store Customer Support. My name is Abdul and I will be happy to assist you.
I'm sorry to hear that you have been unable to get your podcast listed on the iTunes Store. Addressing your concern is important to me.
Malcolm, it appears that your podcast's RSS feed is not validating. To help find the problem, you may want to use a feed validator, such as this one:
    http://www.feedvalidator.org
You can get help with many specific issues, learn how to test a feed, and view a sample feed in the iTunes Making a Podcast page:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html
If you can successfully subscribe to your podcast and listen to each of the episodes, try resubmitting the feed to the iTunes Store. If you receive a message that the feed has already been submitted, the iTunes Store is detecting that the podcast is a duplicate. Please follow these steps to resubmit the podcast:
    1) Change the title and link fields of your RSS feed to something other than what they are now.
    2) Resubmit the podcast feed via iTunes.
    3) Once you have successfully submitted the podcast, you can change the title and link fields back to what they were.
If you're still having trouble, consider consulting the Apple Discussions forums, which have a wealth of information about specific issues. Click Producing Podcasts in the Pro Digital Production area of this page: http://discussions.apple.com
I hope the above information will help you.
If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
    Have a nice day!

    Abdul
