Hi
As checked on the firewall there is no port opened for NTP ie 123
From yesterday evening we are observing strange behaviour on the firewall inside interface.
we have configured prtg tool ie snmp traps for firewall.
For every 3 to 4 hours we receive some alert from prtg tool during that time ping to the inside interface drops
as observed the drop is for only for 70 to 80 sec and after that time ping is normal.
during that we have observed the logs which is defined above.

Video chat problems - please help!!!!!
Please help, I am trying to video chat with my father on a PC, and brother on a macbook
I cannot video chat with either of them, I have an comm error -8 come back every time i initiate a video session with either my brother or my father. However my father (using a PC and AIM 6.5) can have successful video chat with both my brother and I.
I have made the suggested alterations to both QT and iChat preferences, I have switched off both the router and mac firewalls, but still no joy.
I am using a intel iMac OSX 10.4.11, with ichat 3.1.9 and a belkin router, any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advanceIf you have two computers on your LAN that you want to use the same ports for then you have to use a method that allows multiple computers.
UPnP is one method and easiest to set up as it is usually an On/Off setting
Port Triggering is another and needs you to know which ports iChat uses first and where it uses next to get it set up.
UPnP also tends to get around any NAT issues
Having said that the Link I sent you to earlier does not show UPnP or Port Triggering in the menu.

Which Says it does have UPnP and an SPI firewall
*Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP) Compatibility*
UPnP (Universal Plug-and-Play) is a technology that offers seamless
operation of voice messaging, video messaging, games, and other
applications that are UPnP-compliant.
*SPI Firewall*
Your Router is equipped with a firewall that will protect your network
from a wide array of common hacker attacks including IP Spoofing,
Land Attack, Ping of Death (PoD), Denial of Service (DoS), IP with zero
length, Smurf Attack, TCP Null Scan, SYN flood, UDP flooding, Tear
Drop Attack, ICMP defect, RIP defect, and fragment flooding.
This last is the most likely cause of blocks as iChat data can be seen as an Attack by this sort of "firewall" It appears on page 56 of the manual.
UPnP is on page 67

I have 4 WLC's all running F/W 7.0.250.0 there has been some very strange problems with them recently. Every 10-20 minutes one of the controllers will drop all of its AP's and then they will roll over and find a new controller. It seems to be random as to which controller will drop its ap's. I've enabled debugging on them and have a log to post, and need help making sense of it. I went through all of the debugging options and enabled everything that had an error option, so the log might be bloated.

yes there can be other issues ,like DoS or other attack on the network but its rare in your scenario. So you should first upgrade the WLC firmware. AS 7.6 is being the most stable version if you are not using 2100. After upgradation your LAP connect to WLC and they automatically upgraded also via WLC.
This will resolve the issue but few other things you can try if the above not works ,like you can use winshark to test the ping of death or any unwanted traffic going to the WLC. Or you can check if there is any loop in the network if STP is not properly configured. LAstly check and enable dynamic power and channel assignment from WLC for APs. Make sure you are getting the power required for the devices from the end points. -
Verizon DSL Firewall settings & iChat
I currently use Verizon DSL utilizing a wireless Westell Versalink (Model #327W) modem. My current firewall setting is:
*Typical Security (Medium)*
*The medium security setting only allows basic Internet functionality by default, just like High level security. Medium security, however, allows customization through Port Forwarding configuration so certain traffic can pass.*
Utilizing this setting I can not use iChat, however if I lower the firewall setting to:
*Minimum Security (Low)*
*The low security setting will allow all traffic except for known attacks. With low, your modem is visible by other computers on the Internet.*
I can then use iChat.
Is there a work around to this? I do not want to have minimum security for my firewall and I want to use iChat more often.
Any suggestions, ideas, etc would be much appreciated.
Oh! my Mac Firewall is currently activeHi Ian,
The answer is yes.
Much like the way getting email is a risk from getting stuff you don't want, to being offended by something, or even getting a virus/tojan.
Blocking all Incoming connection means you would not be able to iChat to anyone.
Particularly if they tried to call you.
It is more like email and understanding what is a risk and what the risk is.
Ping based attacks may bring down your Internet connection needing the modem to be reset.
Discovering your Public IP is not really that difficult even if Ping Blocking is ON
There are websites that will tell you. yours http://www.whatsmyip.org/
http://www.google.com/search?q=myIP&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US :official&client=firefox-a
Whether someone would move up to a Ping of Death attack depends some what on how malicious they are and whether you present a "Big Enough" target to someone.
As a Screen Name can be logged in on a web site, from a phone or several computers it pays to check that the Buddy who responded is in the "right" place.
If you want to worry more
http://www.pixelitt.com.au/internet-security/internet-security-p2.htm
From Google Search
It may pay to read some more on this.
Essentially Not having Ping Blocking allows the routing device to respond to Pings.
This reveals your Public Address as being valid.
It does not tell them the IPs the router uses for the LAN side or the LAN IPs that your computer have.
Like Emails to a certain extent you have to set up things yourself to allow further penetration.
Which ports are open and in some cases for how long can be part of the solution.
You have to remember that the first 1024 ports are open anyway.
Web Browsing and email apps use ports below this threshold which is why most routing device work Out of the Box for web browsing and mail.
Web Browsing uses port 80 with some secure login sites using port 443
Some mail apps also use port 443 along with many others depending on the server type and whether it is Outgoing or Incoming mail.
As these ports are open any real intrusion attempt is going to be on those ports.
Responding to a ping is more like a random phone number dialled by a 2 year old and you find someone is Australia is talking to them (validating that random number)
Video and Audio chats (Including the audio chat alongside Screen Sharing in iChat) will not work without Pings being responded to.
iChat will not work unless the ports it needs above the 1024 threshold are open.
If your connection is not that fast you may get away with not disabling any DoS or SPI as you may not reach the threshold in download speed.
I hope this helps a little

RMI Server (stock example) won't start!? HELP!
I'm connected to hi-speed cable, and I'm getting a timeout on the server naming.lookup call.
This is the standard StockMarket jdk sample unmodified. It's fine when not connected to the net, but attempts to call out on startup, and is blocked by the IP target!? What gives? I want to run it locally.
StockServer.main: binding server
StockServer.main: an exception occurred: Connection refused to host: 192.168.255
.246; nested exception is:
java.net.ConnectException: Operation timed out: connect
java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: 192.168.255.246;
Any ideas????I had the same problem -- it came down to the fact that I was running Norton Personal Firewall and that would not let my client and server talk to each other. The problem manifest that I could ping out of the NPF machine, but it could not be pinged (that's the point of the firewall! to avoid the ping of death).
Secondly, my dialer would attempt to dial up the internet connection until I went to Internet Properties on the control panel (this problem manifest only under Win98) and then went to Connections tab and ticked the "Never dial a connection" radio button.
Very frustrating problem. Perhaps there should be a forum where people just post solutions to horrible problems they had <g> . pb. -
Multicast IP on 1742 Smart Camera
I have setup a smart camera on a switched ethernet system.
Cam IP--10.128.xx.xx
PLC IP--10.128.xx.xx
PC with browser to view web server--10.128.xx.xx
The Camera ONLY NEEDS TO COMMUNICATE to these other 2 IP's.
How to I limit this or shut off multi-cast?Its been a while since i have gotten to get back to the forum.

This is a tool that i've been working on for a couple of days, it needs work (so no flames) I want to make a similar linux compatable version aswell...
It's basically a tool that I think network administrators and pen-testers / ethical hackers alike would find usefull all comments welcome, it has the following features:
Ping computer
net view
nslookup
net users
tracert
syskey encryption
remote desktop
netstat
remote shutdown

(maybe it'll have something to do with *.jar)(??) Jars are useful for deployment, however at the moment you just need to be able to compile and run the application from the command line. So I would not worry about Jars just yet.
Now do you have a question, or is this just a request for someone to review your code?
If the latter:

You might want to look at Actions & AbstractAction rather than the large if statement.
Most of the code is copy & paste code. You might want to have a RunCommandAction. -

Linksys Router and Screen Sharing Problems
Hello,
I know that problems with Linksys routers and ichat video/screen sharing have been covered here and there in this forum, but I couldn't find a definitive answer.
If I can connect find on a LAN between two Macs, but then get a connection error when attempting screen sharing/video over the internet, what settings should I change on the Linksys?
Thanks in advance. The Linksys Firewall is normally Off by default.
There are those that try Pinging IP addresses for various reasons.
A Malformed Ping (Ping of Death) can bring down your connection.
To a certain extent this does then become a question of whether you are a big enough target or if someone discovers your IP and tries to do anything about it.
Most will be looking for access to Windows computers so your Mac it that sense will protect itself.
In about 6 years on Broadband with a Constant On Connection none of the modems I have had have reported a a Ping attack and I have had thousands of contacts with people via iChat some of which will have my IP in their Logs.
Significant Decrease ? No

Slow connection with WRT160N router through wired & wireless
When I connected directly to my cable modem, I got ~10Mbs. But when I connected through my new WRT160N router with either wired or wireless, I got only half the speed, which is 4-5Mbs. Anyone know why or any idea how to change the setting to make the connection faster. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Login to the web administration interface and under the security tab disable SPI (stateful packet inspection). This feature is designed to detect wan interface attacks (ping of death) and block the sender. It kills your throughput for your internet connection. Try xferring a file across your lan (wireless to wired pc) and check your N speeds. The xfer speed should be 100mbps since the wired pc will most likely be limited to 100mbps by your nic. If lan speed is slower than 100mbps (assuming you have and are using N standard) then you may have a bad router. Definitely disable SPI though and that should fix your slow wan speed.

Generated some Dos attacks: no correponding IDS event is generated
I installed and configured a Cisco IDS 4250 sensor.
Actually the sniffing interface has been placed on a lan segment residing on the internal network, so, by monitoring IEV logs, I could see lots of events, but all belonging to a few category of signatures, and quite all informational. That's why, In order to generate some more significant network activity to verify correct sensor behaviour, I placed my workstation running a vulnerability assessment tool (ISS Internet Scanner) on the outside vlan (where the sniffing interface resides), and issued several common dos attacks against one workstation residing on one of the inside vlans.
Some example of attacks generated are : SYN flood, Ping of death, UDP bomb, Land, Teardrop. I also generated a lot of tcp scan activity. Using Internet Scanner logs I verified that those attacks reached the destination machine.
The fact is that neither IEV default view nor "sh ev" sensor commands showed any event related to my activity. The only events generated by my workstation during my tests, matched signatures "NET FLOOD UDP" (maybe signame 6910) and signature with sig number 1107 (I don't remember the name). In both cases destination ip is multicast or broadcast address.
I verified that those signatures I was expected to match my attack packets were enabled (I verified so by "sh conf" command), so I don't see any reason why the sensor did not register any event related to the attacks I perpetrated.
Am I missing something ? Have anyone any idea to make me understand why the results are not the ones expected?
Thanks in advance and Regards
MarinaWhen a user complains that they are only seeing alarms with multicast or broadcast addresses, then this usually points to a sensor connected to a switch where Span has not been configured.
When the sensor is connected to a switch, the switch will normally only send broadcast and multicast (with an occasional unicast) packet to the sensor.
So the sensor is not being sent the packets created by your ISS scanner.
The switch must be configured to copy these packets to your sensor. This switch configuration is normally done through the Span or Monitor command. Check your switch configuration to see how to configure these commands on your switch.
If you are not connecting the sensor to the switch or believe that the Span configuration is correct, then the next step is to run tcpdump on the sensor and verify whether or not the packets are actually being sent to the sensor.
1) In older versions of the sensor you need to configure the sensor to monitor the interface (I think was changed in version 4.1(4) so the interface can still be monitored while tcpdump is used)
2) Create a service account
3) Login to the service account
4) Switch to user root (using same password as service account).
5) Type "ifconfig -a" and determine which interface is your sniffing interface.
6) Run "tcpdump -i " to start seeing packets coming in that interface.
7) Execute the ISS scan.
8) Look through the output of tcpdump to see if those packets are making it to the sensor.
9) If the tcpdump does not see the ISS packets, then either span is misconfigured or the switch is not plugged in where you think it is.
10) If the tcpdump is seeing the packets, then reconfigure the sensor to watch the interface again.
If you have verified that the sensor IS receiving the packets then the next step is to try and generate traffic that triggers specific signatures.
A side note:
Often times scanners can tell you about a vulnerability without actually executing the attack. The scanner checks OS version and patches to see if it is vulnerable, but does not send packets to actually attack the machine. Especially in cases where sending the attack itself would have caused the target machine to crash.
This type of reconaissance is often considered benign and will not trigger the alarm. An actual attack has to be executed against the vulnerability to fire the alarm.
So for your ISS scanner you should see some alarms, but will not likely see alarms for every vulnerability that the ISS notifies you about. -
SJCP from SAI (212-055) problems ?
Hi,
I have SJCP from SAI (212-055), it's probably the same as 310-055,
but now I want to take SCJD (CX-310-252A, and CX-310-027), but in prereqs there is that I need to have SCJP (310-055)...
So.., can I do it with my SCJP (212-055) ? Or I need to take 310-055 first ??
How and when they will check if I have 310-055 ?
Thanks,
PawelI have gone through your log ,the main problem seems to be the firmware.
yes there can be other issues ,like DoS or other attack on the network but its rare in your scenario.
Hi friends.
I've surfed the forum, but find nothing.
This summer my iMac said a few beeps and dead suddenly. But it is not exactly death, it is a sopor.
The symptoms (when I'm turning iMac on):
- the green LED is on ;0)
- hard drive (or cd drive) is saying knock-knock-... =0?
- monitor is staying black :0(
- no beeps or any other sound
Help me please.
Maybe anybody knows how to disconnect internal display in iMac DV SE 500MHz and to connect external one.
sorry my russian version of english"hard drive (or cd drive) is saying knock-knock"
May be a sign that your harddrive is dead and/or dying.
Did the "knock knock" sound like ping pong balls rattling around inside the computer? -
Able to ping an IP address on my home network, but the device name fails
Hey there, it is possible this was answered previously, though I'm having difficulty finding the data.
What is happening is I am trying to get my MacBook to work where it can use my network device names instead of using the actual IP address (ie: MAINPC or PRINTER instead of 192.168.0.3). My PCs are having no issues resolving the names at this point, it is just the Mac. I'd like to be able to use the names as I prefer to use dynamic IP addressing on a lease of 24 hours, and it is just nicer to deal with mentally. The Mac can see the other machines in finder as well, so it looks like file sharing is set up correctly (The PCs can see the Mac as well using SMB).
The error message I am receiving is when I "ping MAINPC":
cannot resolve MAINPC: Unknown host
(The same happens with the printer)
I will try to find out how to create static IPs on my local network if that is what it takes, just wondering if anyone else has run in to this issue, and resolved it.
Ultimately I am trying to set up access to my PC's perforce server, and knowing the address is crucial (I'll attack the firewall issues once this is resolved). Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm fairly new to the Mac experience.Likely just an issue with the router you have. I have an ActionTec Q1000 rented from ISP - it does the same thing. Static IPAs versus dynamic ones won't help you.
Prior to its untimely death, a 2-Wire 2701HG-D router, also rented from the ISP before they replaced it with the Q1000, was robust enough to be able to resolve LAN hostnames to LAN IPAs. But no more.... Manually associating the hostname to the IPA in the Q1000's config pages does nothing.
So I bet you are just seeing the same lack of robustness in your router.
If worried about DHCP changing the IPA of a device, setting up a range of static and a range of dynamic IPAs in the router will help. The router should have a section in its config pages to "enable DHCP." In there, there is likely a place where you can define a range of DHCP addresses. Anything outside that range but within the subnet mask would be available for static assignment. For example, suppose your subnet is 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.255 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). IF you declare your DHCP pool to be 192.168.0.128-192.168.0.254, then 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.127 will be available for static IPA assignment (I am assuming the router has assigned 192.168.0.1 to itself).
With the Macs, then, as you probably know, this is set in > Sys Prefs > Network > {interface} Advanced > TCP/IP. I usually choose configure "using DHCP with manual address." That saves me having to enter subnet mask and router IPA. But you could just as easily use "manually." Printers and other devices, you'd have to refer to their user guides. -

Any ideas what I need to add to get the vpn client to be able to ping the router and clients?
Thanks.I tried that and it didn't work. As for upgrading the ASA version, I'd like to but this is an old router and I don't have a support contract with Cisco anymore, so I can't access the latest firmware.
here is the runnign config again:
Result of the command: "show startup-config"
