Ping on copper v ping on fibre

We joined Inifinity 2 on the 15th January just gone. Our ping was a fantastic rock solid 15ms and remained so til the second week of March. Since then it has varied between 25ms (minimum) and 49ms (maximum).
Now that doesn't sound alot but that represents a minimum increase of 60%. Bt phoned us to sign us up to Infinity 2 and the guy on the phone assured us our ping would be lower that our exsisting copper Adsl  connection. Our previous BT Adsl copper connection pinged at 22ms. So we now have a fibre connection with a higher latency than the previous copper one!
In various phone calls and emails with the Tier 1 people I've been referred to the some poor bloke who fixes computers on contract! We've had our session restarted. i've been assured that they, the Tier 1 people, were going to try a "something" (but never had an explation or even name given to what this "something" was)... which did absolutely nothing of course.
Do Bt realise there are 3 (three) measures of speed that may concern their cutomers... and because my thing is online fps ..I only care about latency/ping. And for the sceptical, yes there is a difference between 15 ...22...25...49ms when gaming!
If DLM was applied in March then surely it should have brought the latency down by now ...some seven weeks later. And if it hasn't then whatever is causing this ongoing line instabilty needs to be investigated ...because it wasn't there for the first six weeks!
I've asked the Tier 1 ppl to refer this to Tier 2 five or six times as I understand a profile reset might resolve this issue. So far they obfuscated to the point where we are now the point of the phone call to me to 'talk through my problem' has been promised but which I have not received.
Any suggestions... I was promised lower latency on fibre broadband but it's now higher than the previous copper broadband. Is this right?

  • Cisco 15454 ping delay every 10 pings

    Hi,
we have the Cisco ONS 15454 with CE 1000-4 card and OC-192SR STM64IO card. We cross connected one CE 1000-4 card to the OC-192SR card on 1 STS. We then fiber connected the OC-192SR port to another Sonet ADM which terminates the Ethernet connection via its GigE port. We have Linux machines connected at both ends. When I performed a ping from one end to the end, I noticed that the ping will go thru normally every 9 out of 10 times. But the 10th one will take closed to or over 1 sec to perform. Do you know what could have cause this delay?

Make sure the flow control is enabled on CE-1000 card so that packet doesnt loose.

  • Cannot ping from zone or ping zone from another server

    Hi all,
I've just setup a zone, configured the OS on it and booted it.
    1) From the global zone I can ping the zone
    2) From another server(s) I cannot ping the zone although I can ping the global zone
    3) From the zone I cannot even ping the global zone let alone anything else
Any ideas whats gone wrong. the zone xml looks like:

    7 ivcp0.lon.oss.colt.net running /zones/ivcp0.lon.oss.colt.net

Might help to send along the "ifconfig -a" and "netstat -rnv" output from both the global zone and the local zones that are having problems.
Traceroute might also help you isolate the problem

  • Connecting copper to new optic fibre

I am thinking about changing to optic fibre cable.   Anyone any idea how long the change over takes and does it make any real difference to the speed on the computer.    My computer is  7 years old and although I keep it clear of any real problems, it is getting a tad on the slow side.   I have a BT Hub3 and the computer is connected wirelessly.   Anyone with any thoughts.   Cheers
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

To be pedantic, it won't actually make any difference to the speed of the computer.  It will be the broadband that's faster.
Standard ADSL can give you anything between about 0.25M and 20M, depending on your line.  FTTC Infinity gives between 15M and 79M.  So, for the vast majority of people, it will be faster.
The speed you get on wireless depends on many factors, including the distance between the computer and the hub,  the number of neighbours with wireles networks, and the building materials of your home.  If your wireless speed is low, then your wireless speed on Infinity might be no better.
Wired ethernet is a lot more reliable.

  • Packet loss when flood pinging a Mac

I had some trouble transferring large files between my iMac and my MBP the other day and so started a bit of investigation. Mistake really - here is what I found:
All mac targets are running up-to-date Leopard and use intel processors.
The home network has a linksys wireless router - all devices connected by copper.
flood ping tests with command 'sudo ping -f <target>:
from iMac to MBP shows 30% packet loss
from MBP tp iMac shows 33% packet loss
from iMac to windows laptop 0% packet loss
from iMac to linksys router 0% packet loss
from iMac to Freecom NAS box 0% packet loss
from MBP to windows laptop 0% packet loss
from MBP to linksys router 0% packet loss
from MBP to Freecom NAS box 0% packet loss
I took the macbook to work and picked targets on another site, several busy switch hops away.
from MBP to windows desktop 0% packet loss
from MBP to another iMac 26% packet loss
from MBP to mac mini 28% packet loss
from MBP to linux server 0% packet loss
from linux server to MBP 32% packet loss
The firewall is off on all the targets.
Seem clear enough - Mac machines can't handle high ping loads. It is no good telling me they don't have to. If they can answer a ping at all, they should be able to handle the load. It is a perfectly acceptable way of stress testing the link. File transfers are generally not an issue but now I want to know...
Why can't the macs handle the ping floods?
Is this indicative of any other weakness in the IP stack?
    Pete

I had a suspicion of packet loss on my internet connection but could not be certain it was the ISP at fault. The fact that I had been having trouble transferring large files between my machines led me to look for possible local problems.
Network fault finding should always examine the hardware first so I wanted to see if there was anything about the cabling or the router which might be causing packet loss.
Actually copying data about the network is a pretty poor way to test things because you have several additional layer of complexity that can colour the results.
When I had narrowed down the flood ping packet loss to the macs, I went hunting on the 'net. There were plenty of people who were reporting various kinds of packet loss. Enough of them that I wondered if there was something more to it. Some of them were talking about similar symptoms to mine. The respondents usually answered a question other than the one asked so I thought I would put up some tests and see if there was actually a problem anywhere.
Now I know it is a 'feature' rather than a fault, I can work around it.
    Thanks anyway
    Pete

  • Problem with DNS - ping/Safari cannot resolve, but host/dig work OK

    Hi All,
Have a weird problem with DNS which is a bit similar to the following ones:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2190208
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=337942
I connect with remote internal network via OpenVPN and from time to time (yes, intermittent problem :)) internal DNS names cannot be resolved.
When it happens I can still resolve names using host or dig utilities, but applications (like Safari) and ping cannot resolve them.
resolv.conf has proper DNS server set:
    *$ cat /etc/resolv.conf*
    *# Mac OS X Notice*
*# This file is not used by the host name and address resolution*
*# or the DNS query routing mechanisms used by most processes on*
*# this Mac OS X system.*
*# This file is automatically generated.*
    *domain openvpn*
    *search openvpn*
    *nameserver 10.0.0.1*
More than that - it can resolve those internal names when queried directly, for example using host:
    *$ host YYY.XXX.ru 10.0.0.1*
    *Using domain server:*
    *Name: 10.0.0.1*
    *Address: 10.0.0.1#53*
    Aliases:
    *YYY.XXX.ru has address 192.168.x.y*
but at the same time ping reports "*Unknown host*":
    *$ ping YYY.XXX.ru*
*ping: cannot resolve YYY.XXX.ru: Unknown host*
I tried "*dscacheutil -flushcache*" and it did not help. Also tried to comment out domain and search directives in resolv.conf and it did not help as well (and actually it should not matter).
Any ideas why this can happen and what else can I check when it happens again?
    Thanks!

I have the same issue. It cropped up after I installed updates to MS Office 2008 and Firefox in which I also saw issues with the icons disappearing in the dock of the applications that were open when I started the Office update. I rebooted to try to get them back, but ended up deleting them and restoring from the Applications folder. I don't know if that's a red herring or not, but I generally try to figure out what has recently changed that may cause something to suddenly start failing.
I'd been working successfully all morning before it started acting up. Switching from wifi to cat5 had no effect.
@realaaa, were you able to resolve without a major undertaking, like reinstalling your OS?

  • Can't I like a review without Ping?

I just upgraded to the latest version of iTunes and now apparently I can't rate someone else's review without signing up for Ping. (When I click on "Like" under a review it says "This requires Ping.") I have Ping turned off and have absolutely no desire to join it. Is there any way around this other than reverting to an older version of iTunes? I don't see why these two things should be connected at all!

    Hi gramps13,
I'd like to try to help you but I'll need a bit more information. What is the source of the music? What method are you using to try to record it?
It sounds like you got a new computer -- did your old computer maybe have a built-in microphone?
What is the exact text of the error message you're seeing?
Please click the thumbs up button to say "Thanks!"

  • How do I change the Default number of pings?

I know that using -c will temporarily set the number of pings issues for example:  "ping -c 5 192.168.1.50" would issue 5 pings.  My issue is that if I don't use the -c option (i.e. ping 192.168.1.50), my terminal issues an endless number of pings and it continues to do so until I manually stop the command.  I'm not even sure if it would ever stop or just keep going.
In most cases this is not a big deal because I can easily use -c to set the desired number of pings.  However when I try to issue a broadcast ping for my LAN which is "ping 192.168.1.255" the command pings the First host that is connected, and continues to ping that same host over and over until I stop it and it never pings any other host besides the first, and my broadcast ping never works.
I really only use the broadcast ping to update the Arp cache before issuing an "arp -a" or something similar, however, it would be nice if I could change the default to something low like between 5 and 10 pings, so that even if I don't use the -c option the count will be low!
Does anybody know how to make this adjustment?

    ComputerG,
the ping command in OS X does not have an option to change its default  count. If the -c count option is not provided on the command line, the unchangeable default count is infinite (i.e. keep pinging until interrupted).

  • How to quit ping in Terminal.app?

    Morning.
I've forgotten to set the -c4 in ping. How can I stop now the ping command in the Terminal.app?
    TIA and kind regards, Friedrich

Easiest is to create an "alias" in your .bash_profile looking like this:
    alias ping='ping -c4'
Now every ping command will only send 4 pings.

  • Loss every 6 ping

    Hi,
I have a little bit strange problem (maybe it is not a problem :))
I have Call Manager cluster with two MCS-7825-H3 servers with 7.0 version of Call Manager.
When I ping these servers from switch or any network device I loss every 6 ping. When I ping from PC or some other server everything is OK.
Maybe some idea why I loss every 6 ping?
I don't have an errors on ports with servers.
    Regards,
    Vlaho

vjemin, the server rate limits ping replies,to approx 5 per second, and some model of phones, do the same.
So from a PC that send a ping per second, all is fine.
But cisco devices, sends the next packet as soon the previous reply is received, so the rate limiting kicks in.

  • Can connect to router and ping internet cant surf

  • EEM to detect ping loss

I am looking to use EEM to generate a syslog message if a certain number of pings or % of pings fail
    For example
    ping ip dest 10.1.1.2 source 10.0.0.1 size 1500 rep 500 data 0x4040
if less than 450 or 90 % of these pings are successful then generate a syslog message
I do not think IPSLA will work because you can not use a data pattern and you have to use udp-jitter probe have a trigger
I want to use this to detect a degraded circuit.
    Thanks

This script should do what you want.  You will need to configure some environment variables before you get started.
    event manager environment ping_sweep_repeat 500event manager environment ping_sweep_pattern 0x4040event manager environment ping_sweep_src 10.0.0.1event manager environment ping_sweep_dest 10.1.1.2event manager environment ping_sweep_size 1500event manager environment ping_sweep_perc 90
The script is written using the none event detector, so you will need to run it manually:
    event manager run no_ping_test.tcl

  • Ping not using FQDN

    Hello,
I'm having an issue with one user (Windows 7 32bit, IE 9) that when he tries to ping one of our servers, for example:  ping can6800vm031.  It pings can6800vm031.abc.com instead of pinging can6800vm031.na.abc.net (abc is our company name).
This happens for all of our servers.  If anyone else tries, it pings the correct address, .na.abc.net.  I can't find any other different with this users laptop, he's logged into the same domain, .na.abc.net, he's using the same proxy script in IE,
and he's using the same VPN connection.
This is causing all kinds of app connectivity issues through IE as it keeps going to .abc.com.  I got him around it by specifying the FQDN in IE, but I want to resolve the issue, not just patch it.
Why is it going to .abc.com instead of .na.abc.net?  Is there a setting hardcoded somewhere that I can change through the command prompt?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andre

Hello everyone and thanks for the tips!  I resolved the problem with these steps:
    1. I went into each adapter (wired and wireless) under the properties for TCP/IPv4->Advanced->DNS and noticed that the suffixes were listed in an order instead of having the option above selected: Append primary and connection specific DNS suffices
and Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix.
    2.  After selecting those two options for both adapters, I flushed the DNS (ipconfig /flushdns).
    3.  Tried a ping to the server in question to make sure it was resolving properly.
    4.  Cleared the cache from IE.
    5.  Restarted IE and was able to connect to the server without issue.
    Thanks for everyones help!

Here it appears that hostname resolution is different. Since that happens in the /etc/inet/hosts file (or possibly the /etc/inet/ipnodes file), I'd examine those and see if they are only readable by root for some reason. (And this would be within the chroot environment, since that's where the problem is).
