Pinnacle Studio MovieBox Plus: FireWire to USB!

I don't have a Mac, but I've used them at my school, and I plan to get a Mac in the near future. Initially I figured I'd buy the $999 white MacBook since I use a Canon ZR800 MiniDV camcorder, until I just remembered I have THIS:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ol-images/hometech/uploads/2007-02-20PinnacleStu dioMoviebox.jpg
It is Pinnacle's Studio MovieBox Plus unit. What it does is that it connects to your PC via a USB 2.0 port and is able to capture analog video AND MiniDV, complete with device control! Yep, it has a FireWire port on the front to plug the camcorder in, and it connects to a USB 2.0 port!
The Studio 10 Plus software that came with it works great, on both PCs I've used it on, and I've also tested the MovieBox device with other programs, including Windows Movie Maker (XP version), Roxio Creator 10, various Nero programs and Ulead VideoStudio and DVD MovieFactory. They all recognized the DV part and the analog part. But the important part of the story is that when it came to Adobe Premiere Elements (version 3.0), that program was unable to capture analog video, but surprisingly, it recognized my Canon ZR800 camcorder through the MovieBox's FireWire port, and captured from it as if my camcorder was connected to a real FireWire port on the PC, using device control with it! The MovieBox is capable of capturing in DV, HDV, AVI, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2.
I wonder if I plug this thing into a USB 2.0 port on one of the Intel Macs (hopefully the newer-style MacBook), and then connect my Canon ZR800 to the MovieBox's DV port, the Mac would think the DV part of the MovieBox is a real FireWire port and capture from my MiniDV camcorder like it would on a PC? If anyone has one of these babies, an Intel Mac with OS X Leopard, and a MiniDV camcorder, can someone try and confirm this for me? That way, I can shell out a bit more money and get the $1300 MacBook and just use the MovieBox device for capturing from my ZR800 camcorder to edit in iMovie and Final Cut Express. As far as formats go, it encodes in typical DV format, which comes out as AVI on PCs and MOV on Macs, and also works with MPEG if you really want to use it that way.
Can anyone help me on this? My college's TV studio director, who is a former Pinnacle Systems employee and has worked with both Mac and Windows, thinks this might be a smart idea, so I don't have to spend more money to buy a USB flash-drive camcorder just so I can edit video on the new MacBook (which would admittedly be a stupid reason, IMO)

Great idea but ... but probably no go ... The MovieBox sofware is PC only and it is unlikely that the MovieBox converter by itself will work with a Mac. You can try it, but since it requires the Pinnacle software it is not likely to work. And Pinnacle equipment in general does not have a good reputation working with Macs.
You could take the MovieBox to your local Apple Store and see if you can try it out on a Mac there. It can't hurt anything.
Have you considered getting an iMac instead of a MacBook? Or perhaps a refurbed MacBook that has a FireWire port - they're currently going for $850 to $1000 and carry the full Apple Warranty, and are also eligible for the 3-year AppleCare. My son has one and it's been working flawlessly from the day he bought it.

• Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 Hard Drive Not Working with Mac Pro

Hi, I have just purchased a brand new Mac Pro.  I have three 2 TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3 hard drives that just don't jive with the new Mac Pro's.  When the drive is connected, I cannot access the drive, read/write or even format.  Finder completely locks up and the drive cannot even be force ejected. When I try to format, Disk Utility either spits out an error that the drive cannot be read, or simply locks up.  This happens regardless of the OS on the Mac Pro.  I am currently running 10.10.2
I have ruled out an issues with the drives, as I have tested all of them on a variety of systems and OS's, including Power Mac, Mac Book Pro, PC, OS 10.7, 10.8, 10.9 as well as on Windows.  I have tried formatting in every file system including Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), NTFS and exFAT.  ALL other systems have no issues with the drives. Apple has replaced my Mac Pro with a brand new one and the drives still behave the same way.  Furthermore, I have tested the drives on three other Mac Pro's at work and they all reject the drives. So, on their own, there is nothing wrong with the Mac Pro, or the drives. However, the configuration of them together is wreaking havoc.
I have contacted Seagate, and this was their response:
The most recent version of the Backup Plus drives use the USB Attached SCSI (UAS) standard to increase transfer rates.  It's possible that the drivers being used currently on your Mac Pro are having issues using this feature with the standard USB 3.0 drivers installed.  I would recommend contacting Apple to check for any driver updates or see if they any suggestions for issues involving drives using UAS.
I have also started a case with Apple Support (Case # 755934373) and am waiting to hear back regarding Seagate's response.  I've spent DAYS trying to troubleshoot this and am now at a complete loss.  If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears (or eyes in this case).
Thanks!

Hi danielsh6,
I recently bought the new Lacie Thunderbolt 2 D2 3TB and I had the same problem as you, i have a macbook pro early 2011, those support thunderbolt but many times there is a bug that doesn't let you connect any thunderbolt drives to your computer. The solution I found was installing this update:
Thunderbolt Firmware Update v1.0
Before doing this I would recommend you updating to mountain lion (not yosemite yet as there is still some glitches and more on preview's macbook pro's).
Hope this helped!

You need a network connection and a product such as ScreenRecycler. All such products require a bootable OS on the iMac.

• Import movie from final cut pro x in pinnacle studio ?

today i make movies with pinnacle studio (windows)
i have pc with blu ray burner in pc (built in)
i would like to buy mac with final cut pro x
is it possible to make movie (high definition) in finacl cut pro x and export to a format which can be imported in pinnacle studio (version 14) without loss of quality
then i would like to burn blu ray on my pc with pinnacle studio
so : make movie with mac and burn HD movie on pc ?

It'd be easier to get Toast 11 Pro and author/burn Blu Ray on your Mac.
BUT, that's extra money you may not want to spend.
Pinnecle, does it import XML files?  Well, that may not work anyway.
You'll have to export a QT movie in FCP X that Pinnacle will read.

• Premiere Pro CS3 Capture Question (Firewire to USB Converter)

Does Premiere Pro CS3 support capture through a Firewire to USB Converter?  More specifically, we have one particular PC laptop that does not have a firewire port, only USB 2.0.  So we were thinking of getting a firewire to USB converter.  Will that work for capturing footage from our Mini DV camera?
Camera is Canon XH-A1S HD and a firewire cable will be running from this camera to the firewire to USB converter, then a USB cable will be running out of the converter into the dual core laptop with Windows 7, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 460M video card.
Thank you!

Might work then again it might not. Have not heared of any positive results. In other words imo its a waste of money.
You need a real firewire connection.

tyler57,
it would be better to direct that question to Gary Loftis, since my MacBook Pro doesn’t have a Thunderbolt port.

• Firewire to USB adapter?

I recently purchased a iMac 27 i5. Love it. But it has only USB and thunderbolt ports. My beloved Nikon 4000 film scanner only has firewire connectivity. I found a firewire to USB adapter online and purchased one. It came from China. When I plugged it into my self-powered USB hub, I got a message saying a USB device was drawing too much power and it shut down one or more other USB devices to protect the computer. I couldn't print. I realized the adapter might be the problem and when I disconnected it, my printer came back online.
Q1 -- has anybody found a firewire to USB adapter that works?
Q2 -- is there another workaround to connect firewire devices to the new iMacs?
Q3 -- is it possible to have a USB port put into the scanner hardware?
George

Thanks, Niel. That makes sense ... should have thought of that ... assuming that will reduce the excessive power draw?  I see Apple sells the 400-800 cable.

• Firewire to USB or Thunderbolt cable

Need to get an adapter to bring video from firewire to USB or thunderbolt.  Suggestions?

Apple has announced (on 6/11/12) a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter for use on the Air, but it is not in the Apple Online Store as of yet. This would seem to be the most practical solution.

• Firewire to USB?

I probably already know the answer to this question but i would like to be sure.
I have an external firewire drive that i used in the past to make a bootable clone of my MacBook Pro, using SuperDuper. The MBP developed some serious problems so in early 09, i replaced it with a new MacBook (2.4Ghz). I didn't like the lack of firewire but i was really tired of struggling with the size of the MBP and wanted the cuddly quality and one handed convenience of a 12", like the good ol days of my powerbooks. Who knew Apple was going to come up with a 13" MBP?
So now, i need to have a bootable copy of my MBP. I have one on the firewire drive which i made before i got the MacBook. My question is, is there any way of being able to connect this drive to my MacBook through some kind of adapter or hub so that i can boot from the MBP clone?
Or, is the only way i can have a bootable back up of the MBP that i can use from my MacBook to do a new SuperDuper backup on a USB 2 external drive?
In other words, is my old backup/clone on the firewire drive completely useless as far as accessing it through my MacBook goes? (as i suspect). I searched this forum for the answer but most of what i found was about video transfer/editing. There was something about a hub, but it didn't make sense to me.

Thanks lyssa--that doesn't sound too difficult or expensive, putting the drive in a USB enclosure.
BTW, i have a couple of those external drives that are dual, both firewire and USB. So the bootable backup should work with either connection, right? that is, IF i had the back on it which i don't. But maybe there is some way to transfer the copy i have on one firewire connection drive onto the drive that has both? I don't suppose i could just drag the stuff from one drive to another while both are connected to the MBP? Is there any easy way to get the data wiht its bootability from one drive to another? Probably not, i know, but have to ask. thanks

• Change for final cut pro HD from Pinnacle Studio 10

Hello,
After lots of problems with Pinnacle Studio 10 (windoooooows.....) I finally chose to change for final cut pro HD on Mac OS 10.3.9
So far so good, I did lots of tutorials to learn but there is one very remarkable thing I really miss. Maybe there is just a thing in my configuration to fix...
Is it possible to view a part of a movie without randering it after every simple change? It must be technically possible because studio does it for years now, even with overlays.
Because I just upgraded my ibook with lots of RAM just to try out final cut for the moment, everything runs fine but rendering does take a few minutes/hours.... Well it is ok just to try out maybe I would get a macbook pro if final cut would assure me.
I feel like cutting blind!
Studio renders right before exporting, this may take a few hours but I would do this during night...
As I said, maybe its all my fault and I just have to change some configurations....
thanks for help
Fabi

Make sure your RT settings (upper left menu in the timeline) is set to UNLIMITED RT. This means that the render settings will be adjusted to play back at the best resolution they can without rendering. You might get a green render bar or orange render bar. If you get a red render bar, that means that you have a filter or two that isn't RT and requires a render, or you have too many layers to allow for RT playback.
If you simply drop a raw clip into the timeline and have to render, that means something is wrong. Your clip settings and sequence settings don't match. You need to choose an Easy Setup that matches your footage, then create a new sequence.

• Is out there a firewire to usb adapter?

Hello,
I am looking for a firewire to usb adapter, so I have a third usb port on my macbook pro late 2011. Does it excist?

Keep your eyes open for the Thunderbolt hubs and adapters that are starting to come out  Some of them have multiple jacks with USB 2, USB 3, Firewire, etc all sharing the Thunderbolt port.  Some even have internal disk drives and one has a Blu-ray DVD drive.  Some are kind of pricey, but gives you lots of options for connectivity.

• Tips for editing VOB files using Pinnacle Studio

Summary: Have trouble importing VOB files into Pinnacle
Studio for further editing? If so, follow the quick-start guide to learn
how to prepare VOB videos for editing in Pinnacle Studio without
quality loss.
I normally receive my stuff in a format I can stick on Pinnacle
Studio, but VOBs are not compatible. What I want to do with the current
project is take the VOB I have and convert it for use with Pinnacle
Studio. And what I need is a VOB converter I know.
After getting some reviews online and multiple testing, I found the
best and easiest way to import VOB files into Pinnacle Studio along with
the help from Brorsoft Video Converter.
It is an optimal VOB converter for you, which can help you change VOB
into a different format like MPEG-2, AVI with least quality loss. You
should then be able to import the new file into Pinnacle Studio with
smooth editing without any trouble. It will ensure a perfect VOB
importing, playing and editing workflow with Pinnacle Studio
9/11/12/14/15.
How to Convert VOB to Pinnacle Studio editable format
1. Download, install and run the VOB to Pinnacle Studio Converter; click "Add Videos" icon to load your source .vob videos.
2. Click “Format” bar and choose "Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas
> MPEG-2 (*.mpg)” as output format on the drop-down menu. Of course,
you can also choose AVI, MP4, WMV from “Common Video” as the output
format.
3. Click “Settings” button if you’d like to customize
advanced audio and video parameters like Video Codec, aspect ratio, bit
rate, frame rate, Audio codec, sample rate, audio channels.
4. Click the convert button under the preview window, the
converter will start encoding VOB for importing to Pinnacle Studio. Soon
after the conversion is finished, just click "Open" button to get the
generated files for edit in Pinnacle Studio 14/15/16 perfectly.
Source: How to split large vob files to Pinnacle Studio
movies-videos-convert-tips.overblog.com/2014/02/how-to-make-video-object-.vob-format-is-it-editable-friendly-in-pinnacle-studio.html
If you have the VOB files is it on a pre-existing DVD that will play on a set top box? (i.e. a VIDEO_TS folder with the VOB of your film inside it?)
then you could use Toast or similar to do a copy of it.
Otherwise you can use a program like MPEGStreamclip to demux the VOB back to an m2v and AC3 (Video and Audio file) and use DVD-SP to make a new playable DVD. There would be no loss in quality if you are merely demuxing.

• FireWire vs USB at hibernate mode

Well I have the following task/issue. I have iMac and installed SamrtSleep 3rd party utility. It put my IMac in hibernate mode once system goes sleep. I have made for UPS setup so when power is off iMac will hibernate.
The problem is I have several external hard drives - FireWire and USB. Anytime I wakeup after hibernate the USB drives is unplugged and plugged again (software mode) and it breaks everything (if any) what was busy with this external drive and Not Properly Ejected warning appear. For example I have image file on external USB mounted before sleep. After wakeup it's unmounted like if I will just switch hard disk off while running.
However my FireWire works just fine the same way like internal hard drive. I have virtual machine  image file on FireWire disk. I open and run it. Than go to hibernate and wakeup. The system stays same place where it was before sleep. Noting was unmounted/unplugged. I was able to continue work on Mac OS as well as in same place in virtual machine.
First I was looking for help here and All Over The Google but all issues is around how to unmount all external drives before sleep. But I don't need to unmount them I need hibernate them together with all system.
Also when wakeup my virtual machine notice me where to plug many USB devices (it always ask when new one is connected). It means when Mac OS wakeup from hibernate it "break" all USB connections however nothing happens with FireWire.
My question so far if its possible to put USB in some mode when it will not "break" on wakeup? Or maybe any other solution to hibernate USB disks.

Ok nobody asnwer maybe it's not clear and too many text. I will ask more easy way.
Why Mac OS reconnecting all USB devices after deep sleep?
