Pinwheel freeze

so I was trying to move 12,000 pics into a folder on my desktop, they were on an external hard drive but thats where I was moving them from. The files didn't go onto the folder but scattered onto my desktop....ugggh now the wheel is spining. It's been a day and it hadn't stopped. I don't know if they are still on the external hard drive. I can't close or open anything but the mouse does move

Yes, a common problem, OSX treats every file on the Desktop as a separate window, eating up RAM.
Likely your files are still on the external drive as long as you didn't hold CMD while copying, which changes it to a Move files function.
I'm afraid you have to power down, hold Shift Key at bootup, login & see if you can move a few files at a time to that folder... no CMD key needed to Move when it's on the same Partition.

  • Intermittent Pinwheel & Freezing

Hello all.  I'm a relatively new Mac user, having purchased a used Mac Pro last year.  Specs are as follows:
    2 x 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    5GB 667MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    OS X 10.7.5
OS and applications are running off a 64GB SSD
Over the past week I've intermittently been seeing the pinwheel, and all applications begin to freeze.  Power cycling brings me back online.  This has been happening at least twice per day.  I haven't seen any applications eating up a lot of memory in Activity Monitor.  I've copied the system logs from a crash that occurred earlier this morning.  Note that there are a high number of mentions of a Citrix plugin and Spotify.  The Citrix plugin is an application I use for remoting in to work.  This has been installed for a couple of months with no issues.  Yesterday after reviewing these logs I uninstalled and reinstalled, but problems have obviously continued.
A bit later today I'll be uninstalling both Spotify and the Citrix Receiver application to determine if this has any positive effect.  In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me if there are other logs or settings I should be reviewing.  I come from a Windows-heavy background so a lot of this is new to me.

When  did you last restore your SSD? Especially with a small 64GB, that is a must almost 100% that you clone and then restore from disk image or from another volume.
That is the first thing I would do.
Also, Lion Recovery and Disk Utility to repair your drive should be done before clone. Nice to have a backup clone from previous that you know is safe and no damage to directory or errors.

  • Mac pinwheel freezes

Please / Thanks: Mac OS X 10.6.8; Firefox 6.0.2; connected via Verizon Mobile Broadband USB - in the past couple of weeks, when browsing on-line, there has been repeated (increasingly) times when I'll click on a bookmark or something in a site and after about 2-3 seconds, the maddening little colored pinwheel will show up and sit there doing its go-round business .... sometimes after up to a minute or two it will decide to go ahead with the function; many times it seems to just be stuck, so I force-shutdown and start all over. Downloaded and ran ClamXav to see if there were any buggers involved in this, but only came up with one "Trojan" file; also did the MacBook disk utility verify permissions (having read in some forum that this might help), but hasn't made any difference. Any illumination about what's going on and how to get back to the regular, quick action-response? Thanks.

Buy Disk Warrior which may be able to repair the drive if it's just directory corruption and not drive failure.
The error means that the drive has more or less data than the directory information reports. This is fixable. BTW, have you tried using Disk Utility to fix the problem or did Disk Utility report the error and say it cannot fix it?
If you cannot read your  OS X installer DVD, then either the DVD is defective or the optical drive is defective or out of alignment.

  • Can't open email accounts and contacts in preferences. Pinwheel freeze

I had problems downloading attachments so I entered the Mail Contacts and Calendars folder in System preferences and entered my gmail address there, after which downloads forwarded to that account came through fine.  The only problem is that when I tried to get back in to add another email address the icon kept trying to load and giving me a pinwheel.  This went on for several hours, and eventually I forced a quit. I have tried again twice, both times with the same problem.  Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and how I can put it right?

Only other option is hard resetting (please backup all your personal data first), by going into Settings > About > Reset your phone.
If that doesn't work, then you will need to take your phone to your local Nokia Care point for them to inspect.

  • Safari 5.1.1 keeps freezing up and giving me the pinwheel.

Ok, I'll try and give as much information as possible.
Just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.2 a few weeks ago and Safari is really frustrating me.
I've spent some time trying to figure out exactly when and where the pinwheels/freezing start and I've come to the conclusion that there's no pattern to be seen.  Sometimes it'll happen within a minute of start-up, while sometimes it won't happen at all for hours.  Once it freezes however it gives me a popup that states the program isn't responding and that I must refresh each Safari window, etc.....
I've followed the following advice received in another thread to no avail:
Tried to see if a guest account would open and run Safari (It did) so I then moved on to the following.
Quit Safari and move the following items in your home folder to the Trash:
    Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari
The Library folder is hidden in Lion. To get to it, hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar.
Try Safari again. If it still doesn’t work right, quit again and move the following file to the Desktop:
    Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then move the following items to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    Library/PubSub/Database
    Library/Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
    Still nothing.
Would LOVE some help without having to set up an appointment at an apple store!

Hi If you get an error message saying your flash is blocked by firewall or needs updating or similar and you just get the spinning colour wheel try this link
It takes you to Adobe which tells you which ver of flash player you have - you can then see if there is a later ver by clicking on the library and it automatically selects the correct version for you to download.
Worked a treat for me! Good Luck

Ps Don't forget to use a browser other than firefox or you will be there for days.

  • Hard Drive Connection Issue on MacBook Pro

    Hi,
A couple weeks ago my MacBook Pro was running and suddenly went into a non-stop pinwheel freeze. After waiting a few minutes I decided to do a manual shut down and when I attempted to reboot it, I just got a blank white screen that wouldn't go away and then a blinking question mark folder when I tried it again. Luckily I already had an external HardDrive Dock so I removed my Hard Drive, used the system startup Disc that came with the computer to redirect the start up disc, and I've been able to boot my MacBook from the Dock since then through a USB cable. So I have a temporary fix, but of course it requires a lot of set up, it's a slower connection, and is less convenient when I take my laptop from place to place.
What I want to do is replace the connection between the Hard Drive and I my MacBook but I want to make sure that I purchase the right part. My MacBook is two or three years old now but it runs fine (besides these issues) and is fast enough for all of my needs. My Macbook is a MacBookPro5,5 with an Intel Core 2. I believe it is a 15 inch model. I'd like to avoid taking this to the Apple Store if possible because I have a limited budget and this should be a pretty simple repair as long as I'm replacing the right part. Can anyone tell me what the probable part is that I need to replace?
    Thanks,
    Todd

SuperDuper is not compatible with Leopard, but CCC 3.0.x is.
Put the new drive in an enclosure and connect it to the computer. Prep the drive by partitioning and formatting with Disk Utility. Clone your existing system using either the Restore option of Disk Utility or CCC (CCC is a bit faster.) Test the clone to be sure it boots the computer. If all is well then replace the old drive with the new one and put the old drive in the enclosure.
Bear in mind that doing this yourself is not approved by Apple.

  • Trying to install OSX 10.6.7 on my mid-2010 MBP

I bought this laptop a while back and it was in working condition when I bought it. It died shortly after due to a short within the keyboard leading to the power button. I replaced that and now (since I never got the opportunity to do it when I first bought the laptop), I am attempting to reformat and install a new copy of OSX Snow Leopard. I have deleted all partitions on the hard drive and have my bootable USB with Snow Leopard. Whenever attempt to load into my USB (which the computer does recognize when I hold the Option key at start-up) the apple logo and the pinwheel appear and approximately a minute later the pinwheel freezes. This is where I am stuck. Thank you in advance to anyone willing to help me.
P.S.: I do not have the original install disc nor a copy of the 10.6.7 install disc any longer.

Does the PowerBook meet the Tiger System Requirements?
I observe from your computer specs, that you also have an Intel MacBook.
So, if by chance, you are using it's install discs, the installation will definitely not be successful, on the PPC PowerBook.

  • Slow start and Mac

    Hello everyone,
I own a white macbook from 2009. I upgraded lately to Yosemite and my Mac spend a lot of time to start (the "loading" bar spends a lot of time charging).
Then, when I am using the computer, all seems to go very slowly, even if I just open one or two apps.
Maybe is because I don't have a lot of space on the HDD or some unuseful apps or startup programs.
I can paste here the EtreCheck log if needed.
    Thank you all!

    Hi,
I think I have a similar problem. It is highly likely that it is the com.apple.Webkit.Webcontent bundle that is causing quite a bite of trouble.
Here is my Etre report. Hopefully both of our problems will be resolved soon. I suspect avg time between your pinwheel freezes is around 2 - 5 mins? Also it began after you upgraded to latest OS X as in 10.10.3?

  • Keynote slow with rainbow wheel constantly after Lion update

I just recently installed Lion for my MacBook Pro and for some reason since the update, keynote has been running really slow and the rainbow wheel keeps on apearing. I'm pretty sure this isn't due to it saving because the saving bar doesn't show. It's really annoying me because I have a project due on Friday and I won't be able to get it finished by then. If someone could help me, that would be wonderful.

Yeah, this has me pretty miserable.  I have a 708 MB keynote file that pretty much every time I start to add something new to it I wait for a spinning pinwheel, freezing me up for two or three minutes, and then an autosave occurs (the pop up window kind with status bar), and then it's done.  It's way way WAY way WAY too slow.
Someone on another discussion area said you can use the new "Duplicate" option to get yourself a faster running copy, and then can save back to your original. I don't know if that works because the workflow just doesn't work for me.  I've taken to working on my file copying chunks to separate files, and then copying them back when I'm done.  It's sad, but what else can I do?
Please Apple, autosave is a nice idea, but as a software engineer we both know there's no reason why it should give me a beachball for several minutes over and over again.  This really needs optimization in an update, and soon.

  • Keyboard Froze; other quirks popping up

I'm having a bunch of trouble with my powerbook, and am unfortunately not able to get back to my external drive to backup for almost a week (which is really killing me right now).
First, the entire system just seems to be... unstable. Safari crashes frequently. Some days it simply will not recognize my bluetooth devices. Sometimes the track pad acts oddly upon waking up (pointer won't respond, or only moves left, for instance). Sometimes the computer will make odd, quiet noises, electronic blips and beeps corresponding to keyboard input (but not the chugging sounds of a dieing harddrive, at least not the sounds I'm too familiar with). Also, the OS search always returns zero items. Even if I'm staring at the file on my desktop. Last night the keyboard froze. Nothing, in any application of finder (yeah, I messed with numlock - it didn't help). A reboot fixed (?@!) the keyboard, but this morning Illustrator started crashing and I can't even open it anymore. The illustrator crashes were associated with prolonged pinwheel freezing, and my HD icon relocating itself to another part of the screen.
First, does anyone know what is going on, and second what can I do?
    Things I've done recnetly:
-archive and install the OS (ok, that was a month or so ago, didn't fix the search problem, or safari instability but the rest of the problems I've described are new since then; also, my startup discs are conveniently stored next to my external drive, far away from me)
-trash all my safari caches and cookies
-trash all non-essential new apps I've downloaded
    -empty trash
-repair permissions (though I had onyx set do this weekly, it spit back pages and pages and pages of permissions to repair)
Is there anythign else I should be doing? Should I start burning copies of essential files or is it not that serious (can it wait a few days until I can do a full backup on the external drive)?
    Thanks
Oh, and does anyone know when Leopard is coming out?
    G4 1.33 Ghz, 768Mb RAM, OS 10.3.9

sometimes random freezes caused by failing hard drive, it would be a good idea to back up important files.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 Freezes & Pinwheels at Boot, Corrupt Font to Blame?

Hello, all. This is my first post on the Apple Support communities as I have a very strange issue that seems to be nowhere else on the Internet, so I'll ask it here before running off to my local Genius Bar.
I'm running a Mac Pro Mid 2010, with a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon and 16GB DDR3 RAM. The only aftermarket/third-party component I have installed is a Blackmagic Intensity Pro internal video capture device, which, to my knowledge, works perfectly.
I am currently typing this on my third re-install of Mountain Lion, as I have not been able to advance to the login screen after I boot my Mac Pro, due to freezing and the spinning pinwheel.
I may have an idea what's causing this issue, but I'm not sure how to pinpoint it, remove it or figure out what to do. It may be tied to a conflicting Geneva font, located in (my name) > Library > Fonts. This is not the "True" Geneva font, as that is located in the System > Library > Fonts folder on my primary hard drive. This "impostor" Geneva has a ".ttf" file extension while the original Geneva's extension is .dfont.
Here's an image of the window that pops up:
Before the problem happened (and before the boot freezing happened), I selected "Move To Trash" and thought nothing of it, seeing as though it's a fairly standard warning message.
On my first re-installation, I selected "Move To Trash". I did not see the font in the trash but had other files there and securely emptied it. I rebooted shortly afterward and the system locked up/pinwheeled before the login screen. On my second re-installation, I selected "Ignore Conflict" but I ended up with the same result. Notice the impostor "Geneva" seems to have a lock near its filename. Maybe this is what's holding it up.
The only other common message OSX gives me on each installation is a prompt to install a Java SE 6 Runtime, but it seems to be through the standard Apple Software Update so I doubt it's anything that would corrupt an installation.
These font conflicts stem from fonts that I transferred over from my old PC when I first bought my Mac Pro after Christmas in 2010. No issues have surfaced until now other than minor aesthetic issues that were easily resolved.
Now, I'm left with a dilemma (which is what brought me here). I need to find a way to resolve this, as I think this issue may be what's holding my computer up. I've done research and found that tampering with system fonts will cause your Mac to crash at startup. I'm a freelance video producer so this has been causing me more than a few headaches when attempting to do my work, so I'm scurrying for a result ASAP.
I've tried nearly every method of fixing the issue...repairing my boot disk, verifying/repairing permissions, resetting my password and resolving ACL conflicts,  unsuccessfully trying Safe Mode, resetting PRAM and now re-installing Mac OSX. This is most likely an issue on the OS end --- my hardware is working properly, its S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and permission/disk repair/verify shows no errors. I also have a Boot Camp partition that runs flawlessly --- I can even access folders and files on my Mac from the Windows parition, so it's probably not an issue of a dying hard drive. There's something screwy preventing me from logging in, and short of the first boot after re-installing Mountain Lion, there hasn't been a way to log in normally.
I'd rather not reformat my entire startup drive because of what could be one file conflict, as I have a lot of personal data and presets I'd like to keep. Nevertheless, I have an appointment at my Apple Store's Genius Bar set up for Friday but I'm leaving it as a worst-case scenario as I'd much rather pinpoint these issues myself.
If you've made it this far, thank you for reading this long post. I wanted to be as specific as possible regarding the strange issues happening with my Mac Pro. Hopefully someone has a suggestion out there that doesn't involve reformatting as I'm 90% sure this boot error has to deal with this system font conflict. The other 10% wonders what needs to be done.
    Thanks in advance!

First check that you still can't boot as usual. If you can't, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as certain other aspects of the configuration that may have a bearing on the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the apparent complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode, if possible. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable text output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB="/u*/*/Pl* -c Print"; { echo Loaded kernel extensions:; kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'; echo $'\nLoaded user agents:'; launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'; echo $'\nInserted libraries:'; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo $'\nUser cron tasks:'; crontab -l; echo $'\nGlobal launchd configuration:'; cat /e*/lau*; echo $'\nPer-user launchd configuration:'; cat .lau*; echo $'\nGlobal login items:'; $PB /L*/P*/loginwindow.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Path/{print $2}'; echo $'\nPer-user login items:'; $PB L*/P*/com.apple.loginitems.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Path/{print $2}'; echo $'\nSafari extensions:'; $PB L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Bundl/{print $2}' | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); echo $'\nExtrinsic loadable bundles:'; cd; find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist" | egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID" && echo ${d%/Contents}; done; echo $'\nUnsigned shared libraries:'; find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b $1 | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v $1' {} {} \; -print; echo; ls -A {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A TextEdit window will open with the output. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    { echo "Loaded system agents:"; sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo $'\n'"Login hook:"; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo $'\n'"Root cron tasks:"; sudo crontab -l; echo $'\n'"Log check:"; syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output as text, not as a screenshot.
Please post the contents of the TextEdit window, not the Terminal window.

  • IMac Freezes and curser pinwheels

iMac freezes with pinwheel several times a day. Have to force restart. Control/option/escape has no affect. Usually occurs when I am trying to open something in mail or trying to launch a video link.
I am using an airport to connect to the internet. Any suggestions?

  • 1 week old 27" 3.4 I7 freezing and rainbow spinning pinwheel

Hello,   I bought a new 27" imac 3.4 I7 a few weeks ago and started having issues with it.  Returned that one and now I am having the same issues with the new one.  When I wake the computer from sleep I get the SPOD (spinning pinwheel of death)  you know that rainbow colored spinning wheel that says that some program isn't responding.  It spins for a few seconds after the computer wakes up and then goes away and then about every 10 or 15 minutes I get the SPOD while surfing the net and the computer freezes for a few seconds and then the SPOD goes away but now I am a bit more frustrated because the SPOD came and never went away and the computer froze and had to restart.  So bottom line should I return this computer also and get a new one since I am still within the 2 week return window?   I am wondering if this is a hardware issue or software issue.  If its hardware than the computer is bad but if its a software issue every computer I get will have the same problem.  What should I do?  Absolutely way to much money spent to have issues right out of the box!!!!!!  Very very dissapointed with this product!!!

Why haven't you called AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support. The number is in your owners manual, I suggest you use it. I'd also recommend keeping Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) open and when your get the SBBOD navigate to AM check if you have any runaway Apps by checking the %CPU column.  Also while you're in AM click the System Memory tab and see how much Free RAM it has. As a general rule of thumb if your have 500MB or less of RAM then the system is starved for RAM and needs an upgrade. It should look similar to:

  • Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.

Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.
I've read numerous threads with this Safari pinwheeling theme, but none of the posted solutions I've found work for me.
    The problem:
Safari will almost always on opening, and frequently when filling in forms on websites, start pinwheeling. The whole system then slows down, and then eventually freezes. Even the dock bar freezes. When this happens, I can't even bring up the Force Quit bar. The freezing will often last several minutes, then all of a sudden, all my various previously ignored mouse and key clicks cycle through. When Force Quit finally starts, then everything freezes again. Eventually, Force Quit will show Safari as not responding, and once in a while the system then will start responding, but usually I have to kill Safari.
The problem subsided a little bit on the opening the application problem when I switched my start page from Apple.com to Google.com, thinking that maybe it was just too much graphics crap coming in on the Apple site.
The problem happens on both my Airport and cell modem network connections.
I may have seen this behavior once with Firefox, but haven't been able to reproduce it.
Generally I only have a few things running: Excel, Messenger, Safari.
Things I've tried to fix this:
    Reset Safari
    Clear Safari Cache
Delete Safari folder in the system cache folder
Went into the Energy Saver in Preferences and unchecked, "put disk to sleep when not in use" for both the battery and power adpater settings
    Limit number of tabs open
I'd try restarting Safari occasionally, but the problem usually happens on opening.
I've emptied the trash, and made sure there is ample open disk space (10gb right now).
    Resolved duplicate fonts.
I have no third party apps to affect Safari or networking.
I've reset the machine by unplugging it and holding the power button.
My computer is a MacBookPro 15" with all the latest software and firmware updates and 2gb RAM. This has become so frustrating, it's been very tempting to just throw the laptop at the wall and go back to my Windows laptop...

I'd say the bad blocks were behind the problems you were seeing. Their existence points to either a defective HD, or directory corruption. The latter usually can be repaired by using a Utility such as Disk Warrior, or as you did, reformatting the drive.
Best approach to minimizing directory problems is to do routine maintenance twice a month. Have a look at this MacWorld article for suggestions.
For routine maintenance I use OnyX. There is no charge for the software, but I believe the developer asks for a donation.
It's very easy to use. I run it twice a month. Once it is installed, you would double click on the OnyX icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to your dock for quick access) to open the application. After entering your administrator password, you would select "automation". The panel looks like this:
Select the same items I have checked. The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes to run. Leave your computer alone, that is, don't use it for anything else until OnyX is finished. Once complete, restart the computer and you're good to go.
Lastly, the most effective maintenance is having a full backup of your system on an external hard drive. All machines fail eventually, despite the best maintenance. If you had a hard drive failure without any backup, then you would lose all your information, including documents, images, songs, etc. Not a pretty picture.
For your system, you would purchase either a USB or Firewire Drive for your new Intel Machine. The key here is creating a "clone" backup on the drive, which you back up regularly, or at least once a week. For the backup process I use SuperDuper. Very easy to use. The initial backup takes about 1 to 2 hours. Subsequent backups take 5 to 10 minutes. Total $$$ investment can be anywhere between $100 - $250 depending on the size of your Hard Drive.
Post back if you need any other information relative to your questions here.
