Recently installed afore mentioned drive, using xp I found it would not see pre any blue ray discs, found that UDF 2.5 files were needed, done that.
I have anydvd & powerdvd 8 ultra so can playback discs i can also right click and see files on disc after installing UDF files.
What i cant do is make a blue ray project as encore cant see the drive. a have installed latest firmware and encore is the latest, when i pick blue ray as output in encore it sees no drives, if i pick dvd as output it sees both drives???????????????????????
Please help someone my first blue ray deadline is looming up fast
Darren

Windows XP does not support Blu-ray natively. In fixing that problem, I suspect that either anydvd or powerdvd may have installed bits that are causing your problem with Encore.
To meet your deadline, create a Blu-ray image in Encore, and then burn it using ImgBurn:

Then, when you have time - try to troubleshoot your system to find out why Encore doesn't see the Blu-ray drive correctly.

  • Pioneer BDR-202 hard reboots system in Encore CS3

I am having a problem where Encore CS3 hard reboots when building my project at the point where it starts to actually write data to disc. The weird thing is it works absolutely fine with a BD-RE and will not work at all with BD-R media from the same manufacturer (TDK). I've tried creating an image and then burning, and it still happens. I'm not sure what's wrong and I really don't want to be stuck with a drive that only does BD-RE's (which we just ended up having to send to a client).
After the system hard reboots, Windows XP comes back up stating it recovered from a serious error and when I look into the error it appears device driver related, though it doesn't say exactly which driver. I've also tried using IMGBURN software and the Roxio software that came with the drive and I get the same problem.

  • M2V file does not display in Encore CS3 monitor

I am having problem with the display of .m2v file in Encore CS3. The full-length (65 minutes) .m2v and .wav files are loaded as Assets in the Timeline. It shows how much is the total DVD it will occupy (in Build). The cursor moves on the timeline (when playing), the audio is running, but there is no video display. It used to work before. Since I had problem with After Effects and some other issues, I had to make a complete installation of all the products including Encore. Now I have everything running except the display which stops me from completing my work.
I would very much appreciate if anyone can help me on this. Naz ([email protected])

Just a few questions: does this particular .m2v play in any other application? Do other .m2v files work properly in Encore?

  • DLT 4000 not recognised in Encore CS3

    Hi there,
Currently attempting to build a nice quad core system, running Vista.
The one issue I seem to have is that the DLT drive (Quantum 4000) is not found in Encore. In Device Manager, it comes up all okay..... I am now pulling my hair out for a solution.....
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

In my experience ot really anything you can do. It ends up in the wrong device class on the Windows end and thus is not recognized as a valid device by programs. You should be able to verify this by testing it with Windows BAckup - it very likely will not see the tape drive, either. This requires major registry hacking which basically involves replacing the default driver with a "stolen" one from another device and then re-initializing the driver install without overwriting one component. Don't ask me for details, we had this problem once on XP and only the powers of some PC geeks from our system partners were able to get it running.

  • Photoshop Not Seen By Encore?

When trying to edit a menu from Encore in Photoshop (by clicking the PS icon)I get an error message saying "Could not edit in photoshop. Photoshop does not appear to be installed".
    Photoshop is actually open!
Is this a bad install and a re-installation is necessary or is it fixable?
    Thanks

First I would check to see what software my system was using to automatically open .psd files. Sometimes when you install other programs they claim the right to open these files. Close down all open software. Go to Windows Explorer, find a .psd file, right click on it and choose properties, under type of file choose Change and then choose Photoshop to open the file and tick the box that says use all the time. Click okay. Hopefully that will prevent you from having to re-install anything. Peace, BJ

  • Encore CS3 does not see dvd drive

When I log onto a pc in our labs as a regular user and open Encore the dvd drive is not seen by Encore.
Logged in as an administrator, I can see the dvd drive in Encore.
Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem without giving admin rights to students?
Thank you for your time and assistance.

As far as I know, Encore is not written as multi-user, the operator must have full use of the computer

  • Encore CS3 hangs on "Come for Blue-ray stay for Flash"! Leopard 10.5.2...

I just got my new MacPro running Leopard. Installed CS3 Master Collection. I opened Premiere ok, Photoshop, etc...but when I tried Encore it just hangs on the part that says "Come for Blue-ray stay for Flash"!
I tried to make a dvd out of premiere going to encore it just had the beach ball spinning.
Thanks in advance anyone who can help.
    rb.
ps:not sure if this cause an issue but I installed an LG GGW-H20L blue-ray burner(it showed up fine in system profilier as sata device in the 2nd-lower open drive bay...)

    An update.
Encore would not launch with the LG GGW-H20L installed in my brand new MacPro. Once I unplugged it it launched Encore CS3. So I do not recommend this blue-ray burner in OSX Leopard.
I'm wondering if the Pioneer BDR-202 would work with MacPro, Leopard 10.5.2, Encore 3.0.2 update.
If anyone has any info please share!

  • Pioneer brd-202 with cs3

Pioneer brd-202 Burner Not Found. I want to use Encore CS3 to burn a Blu Ray Disk. I am using a system running Windows xp. When the format of my project is set to Blu-Ray, the Recorder Drop Down List indicates "None Found" even though the Pioneer burner is installed on this computer. When I switch the format of the project to "DVD" the Pioneer Blu-Ray burner shows up in the Recorder Drop Down List. I can burn a DVD on this drive. Does anyone else have this problem or have any ideas on why I can't burn a Blu-Ray disc on this Drive?

I'm have the same problem with LG GGW-H20L burner. Encore recognises the burner if I cahnge the out put to a normal DVD but will not recognise it if I change it to Blu-ray.
I have installed the latest drivers and firmwares but still no luck

  • Encore CS3 not burning to disc?

    Hi all,
I am using CS3 Encore and up to now have been very successful when creating a Blu-Ray DVD.
Most of my footage has been around 1-11/2 hours long so I have always left it on Auto transcode and its been fine.
However, I have created a project at 1 hour 57 mins but now after waiting 7 hours each time for rendering, it pops out the disc and tells
    me that there is a Encore CS3; Blu-Ray burning .... "Device Error", Code "3", Note: "AS-Storage Error= -97140.
I have also burned an image file which ends up as a 23.83 GB file, leaving just 1.17GB space on disc but will not burn?
I have reverted to burning a 1 1/2 disc and it does it fine. I am told by another that the file ends up as too larger a file to burn?
OK, as nobody seems to have solved this issue while searching the net, I was wondering if I could get some help with the transcode settings?
The transcode setting have been change by me many times from.... Min 1.5  Target 25  Max 30, Down to  Min 1.5,  Target 17,  Max 20.
However, the final project before going to burn is still 23.83GB, and the same error:  Encore CS3; Blu-Ray burning .... "Device Error", Code "3", Note: "AS-Storage Error= -97140 is showing after ejecting disc?
    can anyone please help?
    Thanks
    Alan Grove

Hi Jeff, thanks for that I will give it a go.
    Something I dont understand?
When I put project together it says in EN that the disc has 12gb used with
    12Gb unused.
Yet when I build it tells me that the disc has used 23.83 GB and has 1.7Gb
    free?
I wish I understood these bloody programmes he he.
I am used to just putting in a disc and being told immediately if it will
    burn after 7 hours waiting?
    Cheers

  • Encore CS3: Not closing DVD's

I had no issues with Encore 1 or 2, but ever since I've installed Encore CS3, my DVD's are still "open". This is confirmed by using Roxio 9's disc properties.
The reason this is important is, my DVD dubber will not dub open discs. I need them closed.
Is this a bug? Again, when I burned DVD's with Encore 2, they were fine. It wasn't until I upgraded to CS3 (just two days ago) when the 'open disc' issues started.

Most applications will dub open DVD's.
The problem I ran into is, I have a DVD duplicating tower and it just won't accept open DVD's. We've contacted the manufacturer and that's just the way the machine and drives work. The DVD's need to be closed.
Again, this is the only system that I've ever run into a problem (regarding open DVD's).
That's probably why Adobe isn't getting many complaints. Most people are using Nero or Roxio, which isn't giving them any issues when dubbing. Since my company is using a specialized dubbing system (which the average user wouldn't own), I seem to be one of the few who are noticing this issue.
and Minu, I'm confused about you saying that DVD-R's are being closed, because that's not the case with me and the Adobe tech even confirmed that Encore CS3 will not close DVD-R's.
p.s. I see jbowden posted while I was typing this. Yes, this is only an issue with certain dubbing systems that require closed DVD's.

  • Encore CS3: not enough space in disk now, but yesterday was OK!

Yet, another problem with Encore CS3: now it refuses to compile the DVD folder because the project exceeds the disk capacity (DVD DL).
I can´t understand this: yesterday it said that I was exceeding the disk capacity but it compiled the DVD files anyway (and there was really a lot of free space left in the disk, the VIDEO_TS folder was still under 8 Gb).
The only thing I´ve changed since then are the compression settings of one clip, reducing its quality so in theory I should have even more free space than yesterday.
I´ve been using this software for years and had never so many problems as with this project.

Go back to yesterday!  (Ha, ha!)  (I suppose that's half serious: revert to original and use your old settings.  But I wonder if this error will now occur even then.)
I've had good luck with opening CS3's in CS4.  I wonder if the PC to Mac change would be an issue.  Just copy it all so you have something to go back to.
One user had something like this happen because one timeline exceeded the size per side.  (That may have been BD.)
I wish I listed all the reasons for this the last time.
This may have also happened because the C: drive fills up with cache files. Try clearing the media cache?

  • Audio in Premier but not Encore (CS3)

I have the same material in avi, mpeg2 & wav, both play clearly in Premierc CS3, but nothing I load, even just a music track will play in Encore CS3. I'm using M-Audio and have reset the Preferences, tried everying I know how to try and cannot get audio to work. I have dual mointors and have both Premiere and Encore open, plays fine on Premiere. Shut down Premiere and still no audio.
Very confusing and frustrating. Hope for some advice.
    Jack

Have you checked that the Encore Audo Output preferences are mapped onto an active, functioning audio device?

  • Encore CS3 Issues

    Hi folks,
Like so many, it seems, I'm having some serious issues with the latest CS3 release of encore, after effects and PPro. Some of the issues are relatively minor and can be dealt with.
However, my inability to actually burn a DVD using encore has left me with no other choice than to reload encore 2.0 for use. I find this troubling considering the rather large expense of the CS3 "upgrade."
Here's what I have encountered so far:
    1. when rendering a DVD from PPro, encore is incapable of actually loading the resulting *.m2v files...it just hangs.
    2. In Encore, I upload an avi, create a simple timeline (re: no menus) and attempt a burn. The burn transcodes, then goes to "importing" and stops at about the 99% mark, where it will, I assume, gleefully remain until I've turned to dust. When I canceled out of the burn, I was treated to an "operating system error" message. So, I suppose this has something to do with Windows...yet Encore 2.0, on my rig, had no such issues.
I've perused some of the other commentary on the forums and was disheartened to see so many similar complaints. I tried a few of the solutions, i.e. removing media cache from the registry, etc. Each attempt at a solution provided no joy.
The system I'm using runs win xp sp2, dual 3.6 Ghz CPUs, quadrofx 2500M, 3 Gigs of ram.
Any suggestions on improving the performance of encore would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Good day all,
I am hear to voice my complaint with Encore CS3. E3 will not burn a playable DVD. Here are the general specks on my end:
    Windows XP Pro with SP2
IBM Dual ZPRO @ 2.8 ghz and multi treating.
    Striped 7200 SATA drives,
    GeForce 6200 VGA card,
    DVD burner = Pioneer BDR-010A
    DVD burner = NEC ND-3520A Blu-ray
I have tried 3 times to create a viable DVD through E3 with no success. I do not have any problems using the interface and I get no error messages at any time during the creation process and the burns have always been reported as successful. Yet the DVDs will not play on any of my set top DVD player.
    Installation Facts:
I uninstalled Premiere Pro and Encore 2 before installing my CS3 Upgrade package. The installs reported no errors during the process. Also, having read several threads here, I also uninstalled Nero 6 and I have no anti virus software running. Additionaly, I have been running Encore 1.5 and 2.0 with Nero 6 installed with no problems what so ever. BTW, I always do a custom install when ever I have installed either Roxio or Nero so that I only take the normal core CD and DVD buring tools and not the other junk they want to install.
Encore 1.5 & 2 have been excelent performers and have never failed to create a perfect DVD on my Pioneer DVD burner.
Back to things at hand . .
I created a project in E3 and burned a DVD that would not play. Tried using new menu and new video clips and still would not make a playable DVD.
Reinstalled E1.5 and then E2 and used the exact same menu and videos and the DVD was created and played perfectly.
I also followed the suggestion that was posted about creating an ISO file. E3 made the iso file with no problems. I closed and then reopened E3 and asked it to use the ISO file to make a DVD and it did without any errors. However and once again, it would not play.
I took the above E3 created ISO file into E2 and the DVD was created and played on all of my set top DVD players.
So where is the problem Adobe? Some how you changed something and made the E3 software a bad investment. I have a Blu-ray burner all read to go, but if I cannot trust E3 to make a regular DVD, how will I ever trust it to make a Blu-ray? Adobe, please give us the straight up facts about what is going on and how soon you will have it fixed. I can tell you for a fact that there are several people in my area waiting to hear about my outcome before moving forward with P3 & E3. If what they have now works fine, then why would they want to stick their hand into a band saw.
Last note: I am not a newbee to this NLE world as I was a part of the Premiere Beta Program from the prerelease of 4.0 all the way through Pro 1.0 and also Beta Tested for Pinnacle on their equipment during these same Premiere testing.
    Regards,
    Chuck Bengele
I have not tried creating an FLV through E3, but that is the least of my concerns and value at this time.

  • Internal Software error PGC  for encore CS3 !!! solved  !!!

Almost everybody here knows the next error:
PGC "timeline name" has an error at xx:xx:xx:xy internal software error : %0, line timeline name - PGCINFO: name= timeline name, ref=BPGC, time=xx:xx:xx:xy
Where the y in time stands for the length of the timeline minus 2 frames. The BPGC error can also be FPGC or DPGC dependant on how many menu's there are in the project.
It kept me awake for weeks and after reading this forum several times and comparing encore CS3 with encore 2.0 filenames I found the solution.
This Error is a bug in encore witch has nothing to do with blank filename spots and sonic coding or codecs or planning your workflow with a pencil but pure with the combination Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and Encore CS3.
This is what generates the problem:
In Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 you build project with video, sound and chapters. Then you export the project via the Media Encoder not Multplexed.
Premiere CS3 then creates the following files:
    filename.M2V (video file mpg)
    filename.AC3 (audio file ac3)
filename.M2V.XMPSES (an adobe file with preview info and chapter pointers)
    filname.XMP (??)
It is the .M2V.XMPSES file witch creates the PGC error. If you use the MULTIPLEX DVD option then ADOBE will not create the .M2V.XMPSES file so there will not be an error. This trick mentioned by ADOBE and many others is just to go around the bug instead of solving it. Also with multiplex you have just one sound track. I use two sound tracks like 5.1 and a 2.0 track witch you can choose in a menu.
Some people say it is the blank spots. Also not true. They have probably just erased the blank spots of the M2V file and forgot the .M2V.XMPSES file.
When you just delete the .M2V.XMPSES file and then open the M2V and AC3 file in Encore as a new asset, make a timeline and menu's and the project will built and burn. Only if you delete this .M2V.XMPSES file Encore takes a longer time to import the M2V file and will be without the chapter points.
Almost everything else will work like menu with sound and even a movie background (use M2V files). Only the motion buttons in a menu still wont work unless you use a black background !?!. Haven't figured this out yet. Only solution for this is use Encore 2.0. In this older version also the motion buttons will work without error's (everything else also so why buy CS3??)
Here is what you must do create a DVD without errors:
-Create a project in Premiere Pro, even with chapters.
-Write down all chapter points (minutes:seconds:frames)
-Create two new unique maps in explorer for example D:DVD1 and D:DVD2
-Export in Premiere with Media Encoder without the Multiplex:DVD but with NON to the D:DVD1 map
-Copy from D:DVD1 only the M2V and AC3 files to D:DVD2
-Start up Encore DVD CS3 or 2.0
-Create a new unique project in Encore for example "DVD" and save this in the map D:DVD2\
-Then use Save-as (under file) and pinpoint to D:DVD2\dvd to be sure that all Encore's files are placed in this folder.
-Select M2V file and make new timeline.
-Make chapter points (you wrote down the points, did you?)
-Create menu's, even with sound (AC3) and movie background (M2V)
-Then render project if you have used a video for menu background
    -Finally Built and burnnnnnn!!
-If you like to use motion buttons in a menu then use Encore 2.0
I have double checked my work flow and it really works. I have built a project and burned with success Then I deleted the timeline and the M2V file. Copied the .M2V.XMPSES file in the used folder. Re loaded the M2V file in encore (this time much faster! and with chapter points). Tried to built and burn and back was the error. Also this happened in in Encore 2.0!!
Hope that this will solve the PGC error once and for all !!!

    > Where the y in time stands for the length of the timeline minus 2 frames.
This can actually vary, and so far at least, I don't think we've seen a pattern as to type of pgc error based on how many frames from the end it reports.
    > The BPGC error can also be FPGC or DPGC dependant on how many menu's there are in the project.
Number of menus is not relevant; the iteration of the first letter is more related to subsequent occurrences of the error. In my current tests it did not always update; they may have been too similar.
    > This is what generates the problem...
Well, the problem does not occur every time you do what you describe, any more than it occurs every time spaces are left in the file names. What you have is, as some other suggestions, a workaround. Thats not bad, and I wonder if you are onto something as to what is contributing to the problem.
So, on to the interesting part whether the xmpses file, or at least what Encore is doing with it, is contributing something. I took an old test project that throws the PGC error and did some experiments.
Background. I am a user who does get the pgc errors regularly, but not always. Creative Suite Production Premium, with PPro CS3 3.2.0 (374) and Encore 3.0.1.008. Pentium 4 2.8GHz 2G RAM, XP SP3, Multiple drives, Nvidia GEforce4 MX440 i.e. an older system. I have lots of stuff loaded and running, including virus protection and firewall, so there are any number of potential conflicts. But I get no crashes, and only one problem other than the pgc. (PPro and Encore monitor windows do this diagonal thing I suspect the display card, but the drivers are up to date. Maxing and then back to fit fixes it.)
If you want to attempt to replicate my studies, here is a link to my problem clip and the first Encore project I describe.
    http://www.videoandcomputer.com/test/pgc_test.htm
This project involves a very short AVI export from PPro CS3 - just over 8 seconds - called pgcbad_clip1.avi. Just to answer any question, the source is dv camera capture, and the source and avi export I use are dv avi type 2. There were no effects added on the timeline.
Test 1: Create a project in Encore CS3. Use the sunset menu and delete all the buttons except "play all." Import the avi as a timeline. Set the timeline end action as "return to last menu" and set the button link to the timeline. Auto transcode. (Project settings are 8mbps max and a3c.) Check project shows okay; there is never a problem with that. Build to a DVD folder in a new folder. This project throws the pgc error.
Test 2: Now create a new Encore project in a new folder. Use the same process, except import as timeline the m2v and a3c files from the first run. (I.e. if the clip is pgcbad_clip1.avi, in the test1 project folders, there is a folder called pgcbad_clip1.avi that has 6 files.) Note that in the folder they are imported from is an xmpses file from the first project's encore transcode. The build again fails with the pgc error - same frame, etc, but I really think the frame number doesn't matter.
Test 3: Now create another new Encore project in a new folder. Use same process, but before importing the m2v and a3c as timeline, delete the xmpses file. Drumroll...... Build succeeds!
    Go figure.
This is not the repeatable bug option weve been looking for, but based on a clip that always fails, it does demonstrate the odd event of deleting the xmpses file as a workaround. I wonder if that will give adobe something to work with.
Can anyone else get my clip to work/not work in a straight project?
Test 4: Just to answer the question since the avi file fails here, will the elemental option succeed? I exported elemental m2v and wav from PPro, used the same project process, and transcoded the wav. That build also works! I have seen this work both ways. I have had projects where the elemental failed, and an avi export worked. I do believe the elemental options work more consistently. But my project that I completed yesterday used all avi exports, animated buttons in the submenu, - no pgc error.

  • Encore CS3 - Hangs and import problems with menus and avi footage with audio tracks present.

I'm trying to import some footage files in .avi format into Encore CS3 and am having several problems.
In what follows when I say "crash" I mean Encore quits with a standard Windows error. When I say "hang" I mean Encore does not quit but rather becomes an unresponsive process that must be killed manually using Windows Task Manager.
    My System:
    WinXP Pro SP2
2.93 GHz Intel Celeron CPU - single core
    Intel PERL mobo
    3GB 400MHz RAM
    NVidia 7800GS video
I mention these specs however I am not experiencing any hardware
related bugs or issues (like out of memory or video driver crashes
etc) when using any CS3 app.
The footage files (as reported by GSpot) and problems I am seeing. In all cases GSpot reports that I have the appropriate codec installed:
    footage1.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 192kb/s, 716834 KB
Attempting to import as timeline causes Encore CS3 to hang.
Importing as an Asset allows it to import but when I try to click
on it in the project windown to add it to a new empty timeline,
Encore hangs. It plays fine in Windows Media Player.
    footage2.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG-1 Layer 3 48kHz 128kb/s, 718302 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no audio.
    footage3.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 112kb/s, 717606 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no
audio. I tried converting this one using AVS to both MPEG3 and DivX,
each using MPEG1-Layer3 44kHz 192kb/s audio, and got the same issue
upon importing into Encore CS3. I also loaded it into Camtasia
Studio and it looked fine over there. The audio was present and I
was able to export it as a .WAV file. When I tried looking at the
file in Soundbooth CS3, there was no audio track or, more
accurately, the audio track was a flat line.
By way of comparison these are importing perfectly:
    footage4.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Beta2, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 189kb/s Two mono
    channels LAME3.96r, 717436 KB.
    footage5.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s Six
    channels (3/2 .1), 716418 KB.
    footage6.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s Six
    channels (3/2 .1), 716418 KB.
    footage7.avi - XVID XviD 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels
    (3/2 .1), 717502 KB
    footage8.avi - XVID XviD 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels

    footage9.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.2 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels
    (3/2 .1), 2291904 KB
Although this one imported & transcoded correctly, when I went to
build it to a DVD image file I got some strange errors during the
"planning video" stage that prevented the process from completing.
Unfortunately I neglected to write down the error message I recieved
which read like quite nonsensical babble to me, and I have since
deleted the project folder. I remember it was not a memory or
display related error and it included a timestamp where the error
was happening. I played the footage in the preview panel thru the
identified timestamp but it previewed perfectly without even a
jitter in either the video or audio. Took forever to transcode so I
doubt I'll be doing this one again anytime soon.
Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the

Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the remote control to make it appear. Other than that it seems to play ok in that player. Also tested it in 2 other DVD players (a Panasonic and Zenith) and it worked just fine like it's supposed to in them. Also plays perfectly in my computer's DVD player/burner using Windows Media Player v10. I tried burning to Memorex +RW single-layer single-sided disks at 6, 7, & 8Mbps project settings but got the exact same result every time.
Encore CS3 crashes fairly often during authoring, particularly during imports, and when I go to edit things like calling up a timeline in the timeline panel, dragging footage into an existing timeline, or changing button links in a menu etc.. I have also experienced seemingly random hangs even more often, probably 5 or 6 times as often as a crash. Saving the project after every little change I make, then closing and restarting Encore allows me to make progress albeit at a significantly reduced workflow rate. Accessing Photoshop from Encore appears to be working flawlessly so far aside from the slow load times. Encore hangs sometimes during video transcoding, repeat the process and it works ok. If I try to import a menu from the library after importing my footage files, Encore hangs trying to import it either at the 50% mark or the 99% mark (it varies even with the same exact menu selected from the library). If I import the menu first and the footage after, then no problems. Also trying to render motion menus after importing footage causes Encore to hang, render before footage import and everything works ok. Interestingly enough, previewing my project in Encore's monitor or preview panels works perfectly even in High quality mode -- in fact it operates quite smoothly in comparison to other apps I have tried. Although those footage files that had missing audio tracks on import obviously played silently, I have yet to experience a hang or crash during a preview or when scrubbing through a timeline in the monitor panel.
The last problem I've seen is with the project cache files. It doesn't always get rid of cache files when stuff is deleted from the project. I was working on one project and surprisingly ran out of disk space. When I tracked it down I found that there were some two dozen copies of a footage file I had repeatedly imported and deleted from the project still sitting in the cache folder. The file was an avi about 2GB so it was taking up some 40 GB of disk space for stuff that was no longer in the project. I tried shutting down Encore and manually deleting all the cache files, and that worked for most of them, but there was one 2GB file that kept reappearing in the cache folder even though it was no longer in the project. The XML file in the cache folder still had references to it in there so I can only assume that was the reason it kept showing up. I eventually had to delete and totally recreate the project from scratch to regain my lost disk space. This included having to sit thru a 6 hour long transcoding session which pissed me off to no end.
Encore CS3 appears on the surface to be a very powerful, feature rich, and approachable app with a simple easy to use interface, but it is awfully bugged in just about every area I have explored and still needs lots and lots of work for it to be really useful. Frankly for me it is pretty damn annoying that I have invested so much money in this suite only to find several of the apps in it (Encore & Premiere in particular) behaving this poorly. In my opinion every single app in the suite exhibits lousy performance whenever you must do anything at all involving the disk from the time you click to start it up until the time you click to close it down. Several of them are just as seriously bugged as Encore too, and being a long time Photoshop v5.5 user I expected much more from Adobe. Even Photoshop is two or three times as slow now (e.g. it takes about 20-30 seconds to simply create an empty 500x500 pixel image file and almost a full minute to load a 30x60 pixel single-layer gif). So far I have attempted to create 6 DVDs using Encore and after 3 weeks of effort have only succeeded in getting one of them onto a final disk -- and that one is kinda limping to work correctly in my DVD player. Three of those projects became so corrupted while working on them that I had to delete them completely and recreate them from scratch, only to find that I still couldn't get them to completion for one reason or another. Seriously disappointing.
