Pioneer CD/DVD 103 Superdrive - spits out blank DVD

I am using Toast 7 to burn CD's and DVD's. I have no trouble burning CD's. DVD's are another story. I was only able to burn the DVD that came with the machine. The Sony DVD+R disks that I purchased will not burn - the tray opens up after 20 seconds or so.
Any suggestions? Am I purchasing the wrong type of recordable DVD?

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That drive (DVR-103) was only designed to burn 2X DVD media (-R format only).
You may find 4X media that the drive will still accept (it will only burn @ 1X, if at all).
Some new 16X media is rated 1-16X; check the packaging, if it does not specifically state this, then it most likely won't work. Sony (Made In Japan, not Made In Taiwan which is poor quality) 16X media is rated as such, so it may work.
You may find that it is cheaper to replace the drive for a DVR-111D or ND-3550A (under $40 online, try newegg.com as one resource), so that you can make use of most quality brands of currently available -/+R media (nd burn much faster).
If you choose to do this, you need to look at the "OEM PC" drives listed above, they ship as a bare drive, with no PC software/retail packaging; this is all you need.
There are a couple of additional things to do when installing any 3rd party drive in a Mac . You can search discussions for either model # for much more info...

  • HP Laserjet 2600xi new drivers prints garbage spits out blanks

A friend called me about this problem and all I knew to do was to get the latest drivers and install them after removing all traces of old HP software. They're using an eMac with OS 10.4.11. The problem may have a simple solution. When they send a file to print, at first there is a page of 'garbage' printed followed by the printer just 'spitting out' blank sheets until they turn it off.
Any ideas to try? It could be a corrupt spool folder I suppose but don't know where to look for the file.
    Thanks

Thanks, Greg. You are right that the 2600xi is Photosmart rather than Laserjet. I was just passing on the info given me by the owner who is frankly clueless. He asked my advice because I'm somewhat more experienced. I don't know how the rpinter was added to the Print & Fax pref pane.
As far as using the HP drivers I've gotten them to install new ones and had them look to see if the printer was recognized in the Printer Setup Utility.app. It was and that's the last time I talked to them. I may have to go and make a house call. Thanks for your information and advice. I'll get back with any update.

  • HP PSC 2175 spits out blank paper while I print.

I have Dell GX520 Desktop PC with Windows XP service pack 3 and HP PSC 2175 all-in-one printer. Since few days I m having trouble printing with my printer. When I try to print it simply picks up the paper scans it and spits out  blank paper instead of printing it. There is no any error message or flashing light or any thing in the printer.
But still I can make copy or print the test page from it. The only thing is I can't print any document from WordPad or NotePad or through Adobe Reader. I don't have Office on my PC.
I have tried every thing that I can do. Uninstall the driver and reinstalled  it  downloading from HP website, updated the drivers manually, replaced new cartridges and what not. But I still have the problem. It would be so helpful if you have any solution to this problem.

    I'm having the same problem....
The computer is a hp pavilion.
When trying to print, It loads the paper, It checks the paper position, then it just ejects the paper.
I opened the print job que and watched it.
When the print job ques up, it shows the job...then deletes the job before printing it.
It has been working fine up until a few days ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Printer only spits out blank sheets

I have a photosmart 7550 and all I get when trying to print photos or even word documents is a blank page. I just installed three new print cartridges (56, 57, & 58). The calibration and diagnostic pages came out fine. I replaced the USB cable and that allowed Word to spit out a blank page.
Haven't used this printer in a long while and now I don't know how to get it to work.  Any suggestions?

    Hi Kaitlyn,
I have cleaned the printheads at least 5 times, tried printing reports, aligning printheads and even cleaning printhead manually and the ink cartridge also. No luck. I had no trouble with this printer until I brought everything upstairs and set up here and then that one part didn't work. The machine and printer had not been used in a week but all worked well before then. What will really be a drag is if I replace the printhead and it still will not work. This thing and I may have to have a long talk then! The monster will print in color but no black in it. Can the ink well jets be stopped up? How would anybody ever clean one of those out?
Thanks for the input and responding so quickly.

Try to go to the printer's setup MENU --> TOOLS--> CLEAN PRINTHEAD
IF its the same still, then the printheads of your printer would need to be replaced.

  • Spits out blank or black only prints.

    Hello all, I have a HP 5740
    WIndows 7
Since changing empty color and black cartridges I went with the single Photo cartridge.
I've set the options to ICM and chose the tri color cartridge option.
Now the printer will only print in black or it just spits out a blank sheet.
I understand HP doesn't officially support Windows 7 yet but I was hoping for a little insight.
I've tried what I would call EVERYTHING with no success at a color print out.

What happens if you insert a black cartridge instead of the photo cartridge and then try to print?

  • MBP simply spits out blank Memorex DVD-R

Okay, this has finally caught up to me and is now officially a problem. It didn't bother me before because I figured when I really needed to burn a DVD again I'd go out and buy some other brand, but it's Thanksgiving and I want to show the family something and no place is open.
My MacBook Pro has miraculously decided that it doesn't recognize Memorex DVD-Rs anymore. The screwy thing is that it used to. In fact, this started in the middle of a project. I was remastering one of my brother's BMX videos and making a new DVD menu and all that, and we burned what we thought would be the final. We went into the other room and watched it on the good TV and DVD player. We caught a few things we wanted to change, so we went back and changed them, but then when I popped in another disk, it spun it for about a minute and then ejected it. It has done it ever since, even through a reformat and upgrade to Leopard.
Why in the world would my drive burn to these disks one minute and the next refuse to ever recognize them again? Here's the information from the System Profiler:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA:
    Firmware Revision: AE38
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

I was having the same problem with Memorex CDs that I burned MP3's on from a different computer; the CDs won't even load, it goes in, tries to read it and spits it out. I was able to pinpont it to only the Blue and Black Cool Color CDs; all of the other ones loaded successfully, even the purple and red ones. So it must be something to do with the dark colors. Guess that's what I get for wanting "Cool" looking CDs. But that's messed up that the Macbook won't play them, they work perfectly fine in other PCs! Also, from reading other people's messages, Memorex appears to be a bad brand anyways.

  • DVD player (superdrive) spits out DVD's

I can't watch DVD anymore. Everytime I put in a DVD (original DVD's, no illegal copies) in my iBook G4...it reads...then it ejects the DVD...
What seems to be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

try position your ibook sideways...the lens will read the DVD and then...hopefully it will play.
this didn't work for me. but...the superdrive didn't immediately spat out the DVD. The DVD actually stayed longer than normal...
but try it. it worked on a Sony Playstation console...

  • PowerMac G5 spits out blank DVD R?

I own a Dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 with a problem of rejecting all blank DVD+R discs but it accepts a retail DVD and a Mac OSX 10.4 DVD-DL. It sometimes rejects even a DL disc once in a while.

Old drive + old firmware + new or cheap media = incompatibility
    What is your drive?
What media are you trying to use?
Also, OS X doesn't equally support DL media.
With DL media, OS X 10.4x supports burning to DVD+R DL, but not DVD-R DL.
OS X 10.5x Leopard supports burning to DVD-R DL, but doesn't support DVD+R DL.

  • My machine is spitting out blank dvd's?

Any idea why this would happen?

So more information might be helpful to further identify the issue(s).
1.) Are you able to read any optical media that's inserted?
2.) When did this start happening?
3.) Have you tried different media?
4.) What sort of media/manufacturer is it?
I once bought a 100 disc (CD-R) spindle of Memorex and 44 of the discs were not readable by my machine. Ironically of those 44, 29 were readable by my other Mac and 11 were only readable by my PC. The remainder were not readable on anything I tried.

  • Superdrive spits out CDs?

    Hello,
I'm new to this, so I'm not sure how this thread/discussion works, so sorry if this is completely wrong. I have a 2007/2008 MBP. When I try to put a CD/DVD into the superdrive, it makes some weird cranking noises (I guess trying to read it), then spits it out. But, the weird thing is that it read Microsoft Office for Mac and installed that, and it read a burned CD (with iTunes music). Nothing else. I've tried movies, blank discs to burn and nothing. Anyone else have this problem and some solutions? Thanks! (:

Yes, I've had that happen to my MBP '09. There's a very good chance that your blanks are not compatible with your machine - and this does happen every once in a while. I'm not privy to the brand of DVDr/CDr you use, but that's the most common solution to your complaint. I haven't had this happen ever since settling on blanks from Sony, Imation, and Maxell.
If you try different types and quality of blanks, it might be time to visit your Apple Store. The drives may out of alignment, which has been known to happen.
Performing a Disk First Aid run to repair preferences may make a difference, too.
And let us know what happened!

  • My HP PSC 2175 printer spits out blank paper while I try to print.

I have Windows XP service pack 3. My printer(HP PSC 2175 All-in-one) use to work well until few days before. I leave the printer unused for few days and now when I came back to use it , it simply picks up paper scans( a ledger like light runs to and fro at the top end of paper) and spits the paper out. This  only happens when I try to print. I can still make black copies well from the same machine. I only have Note pad and Word Pad. It does the same with both. I tried with pdf document too. It still persists its problem. But if I open the Hp service tool box through printing preference and print the test page it prints.
I have tried every thing that I can do. I've repalced the new cartiage, uninstalled the existing driver softer and installed new from hp website. Updated them and what not.
Can you tell me what is wrong with my printer? pls.

    Hi,
It looks like you've tried some of the troubleshooting steps listed in this document, but there are a few more to try first.  Click on the + besides the XP section and follow the steps in order.  See if this helps, if it doesn't I'll look for some more.

  • Spitting out blank cds

one of our mac mini's keeps rejecting blank cd's, have tried the cd's on other mac minis and they work fine, any clues???

What do you want to happen when you insert a blank CD? In the System Preferences, under "CDs & DVDs", what option do you have for the question "When you insert a blank CD:" selected in the pop-up menu? What happens if you change the selection, does the Mac do what you want then?

  • Spitting out blank discs, but theres a twist and it involves windows...

Here is my version, which is most like everyone else. However, it differs a bit. When I put in a blank cd it tries to read it three times and then ejects it. I set the preferences to ignore and it still dose the same thing. It reads cds and dvds fine but not blank ones. I have rebooted and all that, still nothing. This is where its different. I rebooted into windows boot camp and used nero and everything is fine, works like a champ. So what is the problem here? Why is that the great almighty mac needs windows os to burn a cd? Is it firmware or what? I use toast but toast has nothing to do with why my mac doesn't recognize a blank disc in the first place. Thanks in advance!

The Mac software does seem very sensitive to dust and dirt of the lens and it might be worth running a DVD Lens Cleaner through it to see if that makes any difference ...
