Pioneer DVD-R (107D) will not see a DVD-R, but will see a CD-R

Hello,
I just burned a DVD-R disc using iDVD and it worked beautifully, I went to burn the second copy of the same program and iDVD did not recognize the media. I tried all different kinds of media, still, iDVD would spit it out and say it wanted a dvd-r disc...
On the desktop, if I put in any dvd-r media, it doesn't show up at all, if I put in cd-r media, it opens up into iTunes nice and properly. This makes me feel its a DVD burner issue...
Has my DVD burner just died? Does it make sense that the cd-r part work, but not the dvd-r? Are they not the same laser? The dvd burner is about a year old now.
Help!?
Thanks,
Vidur

Check the CD/DVD control pane. It can set it to "ignore" blank media (at the finder level) or you can specify what program to open. Defaults are iTunes for CD-R and iDVD for DVD-R.
Sounds like it may be set to do nothing on blank DVD media.

  • Pioneer DVD -RW drive will not load CD/DVD media iMac Yosemite

I have a 20-inch, Early 2009 iMac that was recently updated with a SSD Drive and I ran all the installation media that cam with it originally.
I did update to the latest and greatest Mac OS Yosemite to recently discover that the Pioneer drive (see details below) will not load disks. Any disks. It makes that loading noise and it seems to struggle until it spits it out again.
I am pretty sure it worked since I have loaded Software from the Installation DVDs but I cannot confirm the if the problem started since Yosemite update. There may be a separate contributing factor, he is 2 year old and since he has seen Music CDs loaded there previously he was showing interest in poking thinks in the slot.
How can I identify the real problem? Is the drive faulty or is it some incompatibility with the system?

  • Reasonably new PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D will NOT RECOGNIZE CD's

I bought a new PIONEER DVR-111D drive to replace my old superdrive about 5-6 months ago.
All was fine and good until about 2 weeks ago when it was suddenly unable to recognize CD's. Audio CD's, blank CD's, my highly valued "must insert to play" Halo CD, etc...
I noted this problem originally when trying to burn a playlist on a CD and Toast would pop out an error message about "Wrong Media Type". They worked fine before. This only happens on CD's (and yes, I tried a few different brands) - not DVD's.
    DVD's (Dual Layer & -R & +R) read/write/burn fine.
But when I put a CD in the tray and close it, out spits out the disc (and I've tried several different types) about 20 seconds later.
I've tried every option I could find to fix this issue including...
    http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=440595&Main= 439419
(trashing com.apple.kernelcaches, trashing Extensions.kextcache and when those suggestiosn didn't work, trashing ~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb - all to no avail)
I've uninstalled and then reinstalled Patchburn. Didn't work.
I used Preferential Treatment to fix my User Prefs and System Prefs.
    Doesn't help.
Now Toast hangs whenever I try and insert a CD while its running - but when I use Toast's "Recorder Settings" to identify the drive it says CD-RW Yes and CD-R Yes.
I really can't understand why this is happening. Isn't the laser that writes to DVD's the same as the one for CD's? If so, where is this "recognition" issue (can't recognize CD's but has no problem with DVD's) happening?
Here's the System Info for this drive:

I'd be very grateful for any help on this issue.

    Hi-
There are two separate laser/laser lens for each of CD and DVD media. You could have lost the CD side. Could also be a blob of dust in the way.
Could try cleaning, or, try and get warranty replacement.

  • Superdrive has full DVD function but will not burn or recognize CD's

OK folks here goes... When I bought the machine it came with a combo-drive (it was new on a close-out deal, G5's had just come out) and I promptly purchased a Pioneer DVR-105, installed it in the top bay and moved the combo to the bottom. The bottom never burned anything (read CD's & music CD's fine) but that was OK the top was great burned and read everything.
I had lost all burning function through 10.4.* so I replaced the drive with a Pioneer DVR-112D and regained sporadic burning and reading function, of CD's and DVD's, and the bottom bay was unrecognized.
Fast forward to 10.5 the DVR-112D, recognizes, reads & writes DVD's (haven't tried the DL's yet) but will not read or write CD's or music CD's burned or otherwise. It sounds like it is trying to read and after a long while spits the tray out.
System profiler seems to recognize and bless the drive with the full litany of burning capabilities, and I'm at a loss. I recently put the DVR-105 back in the bay and it was working in the same capacity. I switched back because the 112 is much more capable.
Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks............. Perry

When you moved the original drive to the lower bay, you must change the drive jumper from Master to Slave, failing to do so will likely render the drive unusable as the system cannot "see" it. Try reset the jumper on the back of the drive, and perhaps you can use that for CD's..
Like Perryb, I want to install a Pioneer DVD superdrive into my G4 (in my case a 115D) and was going to place it in the Zip drive bay. Thus two questions:
1 Can the new drive be placed as the lower drive or do I have to move the combo drive down and place it as the upper drive?
2 If I do move the combo down, where can I find the information about resetting the jumper from master to slave? (The profiler identifes the ATA drives as Combo = 0 and Zip = 1)
3 Do I have to set anything on the new superdrive before installation?
    Thanks,

i do not have a mac home pc. just a regular pc

I had the same problem after I gave my old iPad to my parents and tried to install Netflix. This is what you have to do:  Open iTunes on your computer, the one you sync your iPad to. Then go to iTunes Store and search for and download Netflix app. After you download it, if your iPad is set to download new purchases it may start downloading on your iPad. If so, tap and hold to delete the app (because it is trying to install the new version on the iPad) Next step, go to the App Store on your iPad and find Netflix and it should say install since you already purchased it on the computer. Tap to install, and it will say the version is not compatible, tap to download a previous version. Click that and it will install the older version!    One more thing, if and when you sync to your computer again it will say something like " Unable to install Netflix on your iPad" Just click the box to never remind you again, because it's trying to sync the newer Netflix app to your iPad, but it doesn't work so it displays the message. The old app will remain on the ipad. Hope this helps, good luck

  • My DVD will play DVD's but will not burn from FCP

my DVD will play DVD's but will not burn from FCP also the Finder does not recognize when I load a black DVD

    You need DVD burning/Authoring software.
EIther iDVD or Roxio Toast or try freeware burning software Burn for OS X.
iDVD is no longer available, but the last complete version that still works comes with Apple's iLife '09 apps.
You would need to search for this on online sites like Amazon to see if you can still purchase.
You install the iDVD app and all the authoring themes by doing a custom install of the disc and ONLY installing the iDVD app and iDVD themes.
Here are a few copies of this for sale on Amazon U.S. site.

  • DVD will play in standalone DVD player but NOT on computer

    Hi all,
I created an iDVD project and burned an image to an external drive. I then burned the .img file to DVD-R disks.
They will not play on my computer, but *will play* on my standalone DVD player. In fact they won't even mount. The burned disks are auto ejected after trying to mount.
I tested other DVD's and they mount and play fine.
Since the disks, there are 4 of them, won't mount on the computer but will play on the standalone DVD player, I think the problem lies in the "finishing" of the DVD-R. Eventhough I took the time and verified each disk after the burn.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Pale

    Curiouser and Curiouser.
The next possibility is a problem with your own particular installation of 10.6.2 then, palefox. How did you update to it? Using Software Update or a "Combo" or "Delta" update? Any particular third party "haxies" or system extensions installed that may not be playing nicely with the latest upgrade? It would be interesting to see what happens if you create a completely "clean" copy of 10.6.2 on an external and see if it will read when booted from that? This would eliminate the possibility of third party conflicts.
I'm guessing that you have already tried the 'standard" things (like booting from one of your bootable clones of Snow Leopard and running Disk Utility to repair the drive and permissions on the internal).
If not, then give it a go. If that doesn't fix it, try downloading the (huge, I'm afraid) Combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 and installing it over the top of your current system.
If that still doesn't resolve it then an archive and install would seem to be the next cab on the rank!
    Cheers

  • I-movie does not see i-DVD

    I-movie does not see i-DVD
I am using a mac mini with system 10.3.7 with 1.47 Ghz Power PC G-4 and 512 MB Ram.
I was having problems with my I-DVD crashing every time I asked it to burn a DVD or make a disc file.
Then I reinstalled I-movie 5 and I-DVD 5 but now the imovie does not seem to see the iDVD. It asks for an i-DVD version 4 or higher when I have already installed the version 5. It does not seem to see it.
I decided to try version 4 but the installation disc that I have for I-life 4 does not allow me to install I-movie and I-DVD from the disc because it says that one of those applications is open. Thus I had to drag the applications from another computer.
So, I transferred an old version 4 for I-movie and I-DVD from another computer and when I try to make a DVD it comes up with the message that I need an I-DVD version 3 or higher and does not see the version 4 that is there.
The result is that I can create a DVD from I-movie.
If I try to create a DVD booting up on my firewire external HD with 10.3.4 and versions 4 of imovie and idvd, I have no problem.
    Ideas?
    Thanks you,
    Robert Najemy

    Hi Robert,
Mac OS 10.4.2 is now available. Have you considered upgrading your OS?
Having said that, I will qualify it by also saying that I do not know if that one item will solve your problem but I am wondering if your OS and your applications are now confused?
    Hope this helps.

  • Trying to see DVD drive through DVD sharing. iMac does not see MacBook. DVD sharing is ON.

I have an iMac with a non-working DVD drive and I'm trying to install Snow Leopard from my MacBook's DVD drive. I have turned DVD Sharing ON but the iMac does not see the DVD drive in Finder's Shared Devices. I have tried FireWire, LAN through TimeCapsule and WiFi. Am I missing a step?
The iMac and MacBook are both late 2007 purchases and have 10.5.8.
    Thanks for any help.

Two commands you need to type in terminal on the computer that has the dead drive.
Disk sharing like the macbook air does is one of those things that's included in all OS X's on all computers, but that is not enabled.  (I think it's cause apple doesn't want to have to support it on more devices that they absolutely have to)
So here's how you enable it.
In your Utilities Folder, open Terminal
    copy and paste each line:
    sudo -s
    *type your password*
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool true defaults write
    com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool true
    shutdown -r now
Okee dokee... That last command will restart your computer, then you're off to the races!

  • Imac will not see my hard drive on start up, wants to start from network start up disk that does not exist. How to get rid of it? So there is just one choice / my hard drive.

I have a Intel duo Imac. Everything has been running relatively smoothly for a few years now. All of a sudden my computer will not start. I get the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I go to Start up disk in my system perfernces while the computer is on. I see 2 possible choices. One is my hard drive with the operating system shown. The other is a non-existant Network Start up disk with a question mark in it ( looks like a hard drive with a question mark and it say's its a "network start up disk).
All I think I want to do is get rid of the Network startup with the question mark. I can not find anywhere how one can just remove an old or non existant start up disk without reformatting.
I believe this came from a clients hard drive who had a network system on it. We no longer have that drive. It no longer exists. But a latent icon shows up in start up disk.
When I go to change the start up disk. I can change it to either the hard drive or the network with the question mark. But when I select my hard drive and then got to restart the computer. I get the flashing folder with a question mark on start up. I have also seen the flashing globe a couple times.
When I attempt to run disk utility from may install disk ( holding down "C" on start-up ). Disk utility does not see my hard drive. Just the Apple install disk with the disk utility on it.
What can I do to remedy this short of re-installing? Will a program like Disk Warrior or Tech Tool help?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.
