Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K05 superdrive can't erase or burn DVD-RW

I've noticed lots of users are having issues with their slot-loading superdrives and I'm wondering if anyone's issue matches this one:
I can successfully read and write: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-DL and can READ an already burned DVD-RW, but I can't erase a DVD-RW that's already burned nor can I burn a blank DVD-RW. Inserting a blank DVD-RW results in ejecting the disc after about 30 seconds, no error messages, just ejects.
I've tried Maxell DVD-RW and Memorex DVD-RW. Same results.
An already burned DVD-RW (from a different burner) mounts fine on the desktop, but when I try to erase using Toast 7, I get the following message:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT
It recognizes that it's a DVD-RW, but treats it as though it were a DVD-R.
Using Disk Utility to erase results in a more generic error message:
Optical Erase failed with the error:
Optical Erase Failed
I had an online chat with an Apple rep who had me reset the PRAM, no change. Then we tried from another account, no change. Their next recommendation was to re-install the OS using Archive and Install, which I have my doubts about doing. Failing that, they recommend bringing the iMac in to a service store to possibly replace the drive. But based on what I've been reading about all the different superdrive problems users are having, I'm reluctant to even do that for fear of having an even worse problem with a different drive crop up at some point.
Has anyone out there had this exact problem and found a solution yet?
Seems like a simple firmware update for the drive could fix everything but I'm unable to find one.
Here's the drive specs from the Apple System Profiler:

hi there--
instead of just resetting pram i would try booting to
open firmware holding apple-option-o-f and then type
in the following commands--
reset-nvram (hit return)
set-defaults (hit return)
reset-all (hit return)
the last command restarts the computer. see if that
works. if it doesn't then try resetting the smu.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
there is a remote possibility that this is software
related, but it almost never is, and these things
are much more likely to resolve your problem than
doing an archive and install, and they are much less
hassle free. let me know if that works. [ 8 ) ]
OK, I booted into open firmware and did all the resets. No improvement. In fact, now I can't even mount some DVD-Rs that I had successfully burned before and mounted before. The drive has always been a little touchy with some discs, especially DVDs, but now seems to be even more hit-and-miss. CD-R and CD-RW reliably mount but DVDs have me worried. It took a long time for my OS X install disc to mount and display the window.
I think it may be time to take it in to Apple and replace it. I may also consider purchasing a Firewire burner with a tray!
Just wondering also if PatchBurn would fix this by creating a new profile or if this truly is a hardware issue. http://www.patchburn.de/
Thanks for your help.

I've read a bunch of posts from people with similar problems and am concerned...brand new 20" imac with 2GB of RAM and following superdrive specs:

I have tried many types of media and all have failed...used both burn folder and toast...burn folder has given me the following errors when burning to a Sony DVD+R media:
    error code 0x80020022
    and
    error code 0x8002006D
get this error when burning to Maxell CD-R:

I've used these on my previous G4 with upgraded Pioneer Superdrive and had no problem. Is this a warranty issue?

reset the pram and nvram. tried burning from both toast and burn folder...more pricey dvd+r coasters.
created a new user and tried to burn from that. still nothing.
i have transferred 200 GB of data to this computer from my old one (which is severely damaged) and can't back it up now, without purchasing a whole new external drive, as i'm guessing i'll have to send this back...just throwing money away on this. thanks apple.

  • The burn to the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A drive failed. Verifying the burned

I am trying to burn an album from iPhoto '09 and I receive the following error message:
The burn to the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K06A drive failed. Verifying the burned data failed.
I have attempted 3 different times using the same media that worked prior to my upgrade to Snow Leopard. Prior to the upgrade I didn't have any problems.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Same for me here...no luck with TDK DL DVD +R. Seems that this drive is extremely picky with DL supports (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1181990).

  • Can Mac OS X burn DVD's?

Can Mac OS X burn DVD's?

    Michael,
Of course it can! What kind of DVDs are we discussing? We can burn data DVDs, readable by Macs and PCs, right in the Finder. When a blank disk is inserted, it shows up as such on the Desktop. Simply drag files to it, then open it and click the "Burn" button.
Video DVDs can also be burned. This is the job of iDVD. Video footage (which one edits in iMovie) must first be converted to MPEG-2 (the video DVD format), "multiplexed," and then it can be burned to the DVD as a single stream. Of course, iDVD also allows one to create all the necessary menus, complete with chapters, etc., that a good DVD requires.

  • Can't erase or burn CD-RW

I have burned Memorex CD-RW discs in my Imac Intel Core 2 Duo 24" machine in the past but can no longer do so. When I go to erase CD-RW disks I have successfully used before in this machine, they no longer can be erased. When I try to burn to a blank CD-RW disk that have been used before in this machine, I get an error whether I try to burn from the finder or from iTunes 10. I can read these CD-RW disks, and I can erase and burn DVD-RW disks that I have used before.
Why would I no longer be able to burn to CD-RW disks?

I have tried to erase the CD-RW in Disk Utility. The application appears to go through the process using Erase Data on Disk: Quickly or Completely. The disk disappears from the list of disk on the side bar and I get the message, "Preparing to erase optical media" in the progress bar for a while. Then the progress bar disappears, and the disk reappears on the side bar in my list of disks.

  • Superdrive won't read or burn DVDs

A few days ago I tried backing up my iTunes by using the File- Back up to Discs. The first go round never really got started as I discovered I wasn't using the appropriate DVDs. ( They were 16X). I went out and got some new DVD-rs 1X-16X and tried again today. My machine asked me to insert a blank disc. I did. It did some work and told me it would take 5 DVDs and asked if I wanted to continue. I clicked to go on and it started to work. It took about an hour to go through the songs and then get to the burning part. Close to the end it spit the disc out. ( I wasn't there to see if it had finished the first disc, but the window at the top of iTunes was saying the disc wasn't blank. I assumed it had asked for the second disc to be inserted while I was out of the room.) I inserted a new DVD and the thing just kept saying it was checking the media. It then spit it back out. I tried several other DVDs and just kept getting the same message. I also went into preferences and slowed the burn speed. I had seen that suggested on this board as well.
After all this I decided to try to just burn a small iPhoto library to a DVD. That too didn't work. I would put in a blank disc, the drive would hum and then eject the thing- never putting a disc image on my desktop.
Finally, I decided to play a commercial DVD on the thing. The same thing happened. The drive hummed and then spit it out.
My superdrive is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104. It will accept CDs but I have yet to find a single DVD that it will work.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong? We rarely use the drive. This machine is used mainly for the internet, to store our iTunes library, and as a backup location for iPhoto libraries. I can't remember the last time we burned a CD or DVD- it's been at least 6 months.
Does anyone have any troubleshooting things I might try?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Jenn

    Jenn,
did you check if the drive is dirty inside? If so, I recommend to buy a bottle of compressed air and a cleaning cd (with little brushes) and try to get the dirt out. It took me an evenig with my SD and finally it worked again.

  • DVD's Created on T400 can't be read on DVD Players

When I burn a DVD on my T400 (XP-Pro, Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ862A), it can't be read on most DVD players.  I have tried different brands of DVDs (Memorex, Verbatim) and still no luck.  Any ideas what I can do?  Or do you know where I can download an updated driver?  Thanks.

I guess you would call it a video DVD.  It is just a homemade movie made from a slide show from Windows Movie Maker.  The DVD's I burn on my T400 do play on my son's DVD player which is brand new, and they seem to play on other computers.   But they do not play on either of my DVD players, one of which is about a year old and one is about 3 years old.  If I use the same procedure and same software to burn the DVD on another computer, it plays fine on both my DVD players.  Seems to be something about this DVD drive that has limited compatibility.  Thanks for your help.

  • Unreadable DVD RW disk being ejected - can't erase/format it

    Hi,
I was burning some files onto a DVD disk from a network drive, when the network went down. The DVD was thus left in some intermediate state, and now I can't seem to format/erase it so that I can reuse it!
Whenever I insert the DVD into my mac mini (OS X 10.5.6) the drive churns the disk for a bit and then spits it out. I don't get a chance to let the Disk Utility wipe the disk for reuse. Annoyingly I'd only just bought the bloody thing and it was my first attempt to use it. I used another disk from the same pack I bought and that worked, so it's not a disk incompatibility.
Is there some key modifier I can use to stop OS X trying to read the disk so that I can let Disk Utility get at it? I already tried changing the "CDs and DVDs" default behaviour from the preferences pane.

You now have a nice, shiny drink coaster. Cheap!
Unfortunately, optical disks, even RWs, can be so badly corrupted that nothing can figure them out well enough to even erase them. They are quite different from magnetic tapes or disks, which can be erased no matter their condition.

  • Can I request a burned DVD for movies purchased?

I Recently purchased 3 movies from the iTunes Store. I downloaded them on my PC but cannot open them.  I am a full time mom and student and do not have the time to troubke shoot this.  As I paid over $30 for these movies I am requesting that you mail actual Dvd's or Blue ray disks to my home address.  Thank you.

Since your problem is that you can't open whatever file type the movies have been supplied in, I'd suggest trying VLC Media Player, which seems able to open and play just about any media file type, and is available for Windows as well as the Mac.

  • Can't mount home burned dvd-rw

At one point things were fine. I could mount my dvd-rw with .avi files on them. I had burned them myself and could watch them with Quicktime & flip4mac. Now the dvd's won't mount. The Mac says they are blank dvd's. What is up with that? I am trying this on the PowerBook G4.

David Pogue wrote about this, he's had trouble with DVDs being that age (4 years & under) not reading anymore! try a different computer - newer mac or PC, if one is available to you.

  • Mac can't read Mac burned DVD but a PC can. Why?

Need a bit of help, I have an archive DVD that was burned a couple of months ago. After the burn I checked to make sure all files were readable. ejected it and popped it back in and had no problems.
This morning popped it in and it wont mount. This was a working DVD a couple months ago. It has no scratches or finger prints.
It will not mount on any macs.
    MacBook Pro
    Mac Pro
    G4
    G5
    imac and so on
here is the kicker, it WILL mount on a PC.
    any thoughts or suggestions?

Had the same trouble a few weeks ago. Try repairing Permissions on your System drive with Disk Utility and restarting. That solved the problem for me.

  • I Cant play burn DVD due to no support of superdrive??

I tried to turn on the iDVD application and had the following comment pop-up
"Your Macintosh doe snot have a supported Superdrive. Please note that while you will be able to work with iDVD projects, you will not be able to burn a DVD disc"

  • Why can't I burn DVD's?

I have read the past threads, but I am still a little confused. I have a G5 with a pre installed Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-107D. The system profiler says:

That said, after 2 years of successful burning, I now get an error message saying I do not have a superdrive and I can no longer do burn DVD's.
Any suggestions on what to do. Thank you in advance.

check from another iApp such as iTunes & also from the Finder. If you cannot burn from any app, you quite possibly need a new drive.
Before going that route, however, I would try repairing permissions, try from another User account, & zap the PRAM to reset the hardware config.

If you don't have a SuperDrive you will not be able to burn DVDs.
Did iDVD come preinstalled on your Mac?  If it did then you should have a SuperDrive and be able to burn DVDS. Check the Disk Burning section of System Information
to see what you can read and write with your optical drive:
