PIoneer DVR-112D will not boot to retail Tiger DVD

I recently replaced the original Sony CRX155E CD-R/RW drive with a new Pioneer DVR-112D DVD +/- RW drive so that I could install Tiger and purchase an iPhone. I installed the drive, downloaded and ran Patchburn, and have used the drive for several days.
The drive plays and burns DVDs within OS 10.3.9 perfectly. It also recognizes the Tiger disc and all files within the Finder. However, when I attempt to install / upgrade Tiger, the Mac freezes upon startup. The Grey Apple screen appears with the Logo and spinning wheel at roughly 3x normal size and stays. I have let it sit in that state for up to 12 hours. There is no change.
To get back into OS X, I have to put my Panther disc in and boot into the installer. I then must change the boot drive back to my hard drive and reboot.
I have sifted pioneer's support site for a Mac driver and ran two superdrive firmware upgrades I found on Apple to no avail. Can anyone help?

You really don't need any additional drivers or firmware updates for the 112D or for the QS G4 to enable the installation of Tiger. The 112D burner should work (and apparently does) with a simple swap with your old optical drive, followed by a PMU reset for good measure. The only significant thing you may be missing in your Panther OS is the DVD Player application, if your old optical drive was not DVD capable back when you installed Panther. However, this shouldn't affect your ability to do a Tiger install.
Boot to Safe Mode, which will run FSCK (file system check) for you, then use Disk Utility to run Repair Permissions, then shut down.
Check the Tiger disc to insure it's clean and unscratched.
You might boot Panther from your startup drive, load the Tiger disc, and copy it to your hard drive if you have the space available. If it copies over properly, the disc and the drive are likely okay. You can then trash/empty trash the copied data.
Take Japamac's advice, disconnect your peripherals and do a PMU reset to clear your startup memory, setting it back to its defaults. Insure that you indeed are using a Retail version of the Tiger install DVD, which is a black disc with a large "X" on it. Using an upgrade version or a gray OEM version of the Tiger disc will likely present problems on your Mac, during or after an install.

Macbook Pro Will Not Boot to Retail Snow Leopard

I am a PC tech working on a Macboo Pro mid-2010 15" aka MacbookPro6,2 for an acquaintance (really) and I really appreciate any help/tips on this. As given to me, the MBP was totally non-responsive. Also, the owner does not have the original DVDs that came with the machine nor did she have the power adapter (long story).
Here is the summary: The MBP will not boot to a retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD; it only gets to the light grey screen with the darker grey Apple symbol and no spinning gear.
Here are the details:
1. After procuring a new AC adapter and installing a new battery, it would boot up and run but displayed an error with Steam startup. It connected to the internet via wifi, launched and ran a video dvd, etc, etc. Looked good except for the Steam error screen.
2. I went to the Steam website and downloaded the current version. After the software installed I did a normal shutdown and restart and the MBP would not boot, just went to grey Apple screen and spinning gear.
3. Booted up in single user, ran fsck -fy which reported "Invalid node structure (4, 24755)" which I understand is not good and it also reported that "The volume Untitled could not be repaired". Just on a whim I ran the fsck a couple more times not expecting anything different and that's what I got - nothing different.
4. Power up with Command R. Goes to grey screen and then tries to boot off of the bad hard drive with previous results.
5. Talked to Apple Care. To make it short, they sold me a retail Snow Leopard.
6. Installed a new blank hard drive (500GB, SATA II, WD Blue) and loaded the Snow Leopard into the Superdrive.
7. Power up and press C. Just goes to grey screen and grey Apple.
8. Power up with Option. DVD is there, click on it to launch, goes to grey Apple and that's all it does.
9. Just for grins, I popped in a Windows 7 Recovery DVD and did the power up/option to launch that and the MBP actually loads the Windows files and screen but it will not proceed because Win7 recovery doesn't recognize the MBP. At least the DVD worked.
10. Installed a different new blank hard drive and tried to launch Snow Leopard install but no dice.
11. Just for grins number two, I tried a remote install on my local network. On initial DVD access, the MBP displays a spinning globe along with the grey Apple, accesses the DVD on the remote laptop three times, but then the spinning globe disappears and everything stops. I left it for an hour and nothing else happens.
That is where I am stuck. I really appreciate any ideas on how to proceed. I can hear Genius Bar already, but was just wondering if I missed any possible steps to take myself.

You should have better luck with the correct build, as you can't use the installs as backward compatible. I also have an older machine that is for the kids, and was upgraded with the 10.6.3 retail disk which will not work with the Mid 2010.

T500 will not boot from bootable CDs/DVDs, but will read and open files on them

System: 2 T500s, both manufactured early April 2009, win XP, ATI Radeon 3650 graphics,4GB RAM, latest Lenovo drivers installed..
Problem:- Our 2 T500s cannot boot from any windows coded recovery CD -except Lenovo's rescue/recovery discs. Some -but not all- Linux code recovery CDs do boot the T500. Every other kind of CD and DVD such as audio and video works fine in windows XP.
Here an example of our 2 T500s' failure to recognise bootable CD/DVD discs. All the files and folders on a Paragon Partition Mgr v8.5 Recovery CD can be viewed in windows explorer and files such as jpg, txt and zip can be opened. This CD will not boot the T500, however, it will boot our other -non-Lenovo- computers. The same applies when the media are DVDs with identical content.
We have tried several different kinds of CD and DVD media to no avail. Burning the media on other computers and using several kinds of burning software does not help, ourT500s refuse to boot from them too.
The problem seems clear enough, on starup our T500s fail to distinguish between windows coded bootable and ordinary CDs/DVDs -unless they are Lenovo recovery/restore discs.
A solution would be gratefully received.

A. Yes, many times from a USB CD/DVD drive, it failed too. We burned on that drive too, but the T500s will not boot from those CDs either.

A. We have used the Paragon internal ISO creator/burner, the Roxio burner that was preinstalled wth the T500, BartPE internal ISO/burner ,InfraRecorder and others too. Made ISOs and burned from them, burned CDs directly on the fly etc, all to no avail..
For some reason, our two T500s' CD/DVD drive controllers or some intermediate software act as if the CD's boot sector is not present. Clearly, something (BIOS, software, unstable hardware, or ? ) is blocking the read or write of the data necessary to boot these CDs. Whatever that 'something' is, it has no effect on burning and booting Lenovo recovery CDs.
The bizarre part of all this is that a`Lenovo recovery CD burned on the T500 drive WILL BOOT the T500. A Paragon v8.5 recovery CD or BartPE CD burned in one of our non-Lenovo computers will boot ithat and every other computer we have except our T500s.

Absolutely will not boot from cd or dvd

Someone has given me a Sun Ultra 10 workstation ... problem is that no matter what I do this machine will not boot from the optical drive. Extremely fustrating. The errors I am getting are "Bad magic number in disk label" and "Can't open disk label package" and "can't open boot device".
I have tried three seperate drives, three seperate IDE ribbons, and three different disks. I have tried on both IDE channels, master and slave. The cdrom alias seems to be hard set and does not change when I change its position on the bus. A combination of devalias, probe-ide and show-disks helps. What happens when I try and boot from the correct device is that the disk spins up, I get the error(s) and thats it.
I am aware that there has been a lot of discussion about this in the past and have spent absolutely ages reading pages from google results but none of it seems to help me.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :-)

Just checking that you are trying to boot from a Sparc version.
I checked what happend with boot cdrom -s on a Sun Ultra 10 from a X86 Solaris DVD and got the errors:
Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package
Can't open boot device

IMac will not boot from Snow Leopard DVD or original Leopard disc!

I am going mad! I am trying to update my iMac (with original Leopard installed) to Snow Leopard. Here is what I have tried:
Using the Snow Leopard DVD:
- A standard install: the disc ejects after about 15 minutes.
- Put another working DVD in and verified it in Disk Utility, all ok.
- Verified the internal hard drive in Disk Utility, all ok.
- Verfied the SL DVD, all ok.
- Decided to try a clean install, so backed up everything.
- Tried to boot from SL DVD by using the Utilities option, it ejects the disc at restart.
- Tried to force it to boot to the DVD by restarting and holding the C key, it ejects.
- Restart holding the Option key, it ejects.
- Restart holding the Ctrl, Alt and Option keys, ejects.
- Everytime it ejects and starts up normally.
- So I cleaned the disc, updated all the firmware, reset the NVRAM/PRAM via holding keys when restarting, and repaired disc permissions.
- Tried to force it to boot again, ejects.
- Tried to put the disc back in straight after it ejects with all the steps, still starts up normally.
- Changed the start up disc in System Preferences to the SL DVD, restart, it ejects.
By now I am readying the noose...
- Dug out the original Leopard installation CDs.
- Repeated all the forced boot restarts (C key, Option key, Ctrl, Alt, Option keys), same story.
- Repeated changing the start up disc in System Prefs, same story again.
- Call Apple Support, they told me to try everything I have tried and that the DVD drive is dodgy, well it works with everyhting else! Burning and reading! I really don't want to have to go to an Apple Store- it's miles away (a costly journey) and I just do not have the time for all of this.
RAWR! Does anyone know what to do? Please? S.O.S.?

Possible scenarios:
1: The 10.6.3 SL retail disk is bad, it happens.
2: Your not using the 10.6.3 SL retail disk but one from another machine which doesn't have the drivers for that machine.
3: Your optical drive is funky or some other hardware issues.
4: Your trying to install 10.6 onto a PowerPC based Mac, no can do.
5: Your not using a wired keyboard for boot key commands, have some other hardware conflicts.
Possible solutions.
1: Copy the SL 10.6.3 disk using Disk Utility to another DVD, the error checking may resolve the original disk's issue.

If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.

Mac Pro Early 2008 will not boot off Win7 Install DVD

Hello,
I am hoping someone out there will have encountered something similar and have some suggestions or ideas, because at this point I can't think of anything else to try.
I have a 2.8 Ghz 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an Nvidia 8800GT Graphics card. I am running OS 10.6.2, fully patched and updated.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Ultimate via Boot Camp, and am encountering a rather odd problem.
Once I have launched Boot Camp Assistant it allows me to partition the drive and does so correctly, but when it attempts to reboot off the Windows 7 installation DVD, I encounter a blank grey-white screen similar to that which you normally get on startup but without the Apple logo. This continues for some time (it seems to vary), and then the screen goes dark and the monitor says it is receiving no signal. The fans on the Mac Pro go for a while, then it goes to sleep. I've tried leaving it for a couple hours, no dice.
I've tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows install disks. I had the release candidate for Windows 7 installed previously, and it worked perfectly. I have since tried that same install DVD that I used to install the release candidate, and it encounters the exact same issue. Booting up off the Snow Leopard Install DVD works fine.
I tried doing a clean install of Snow Leopard on a spare drive, booting off that, and then starting from square 1 using Boot Camp Assistant to re-partition that same drive. Same problem. No matter what I do or try, my Mac Pro does not want to boot off this install disc. I have yet to try the disc in another machine to see if it works there, and I will as soon as I can, but the fact that the RC disc worked a few months back and now will not seems to rule out the boot discs as defective. I've also tried both my internal optical drives with no change, and no other discs have any issues.
I've already spent an hour and a half talking to Apple Technical Support, and they seemed stumped, so I'm hoping someone will have a notion. If not, I understand and appreciate you taking the time to read this- I have no idea at this point, and I'm generally a pretty knowledgeable user.

Pull all the drives you have other than the one that you will install Windows 7 to.
I think I will try this next.
Don't put Windows 7 on the same drive as OS X, give it its own.
That was initially what I started out doing.
And you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant.
True, but it's what Apple suggests using.
Might also want to try moving the monitor cable to the other card port.

Any other PCI cards or devices attached or installed should also be questioned or disconnected.
I've disconnected everything I could.
Always a good idea to start fresh which I assume you are doing (not trying to upgrade over RC etc).
Yes, the drive was empty to start with.
Honestly it seems like the Mac Pro is generally refusing to boot from any Windows disc. Things I've tried since my initial post:
- Loaded Windows 7 Install disc into my room mate's windows PC... loaded up fine, got to install screen
- Tried his OEM copy of Windows Vista 32-bit, same issue
At this point it seems like maybe some kind of firmware issue or some kind or graphics driver issue, but I'm pretty much grasping at straws at this point. It doesn't seem like it's even getting to the point where hard drives or anything matters.
It does recognize that I have a Windows 7 install disc inserted when I use the boot selector/startup disk chooser.

P67A-GD65 (B3) will not boot with external USB DVD connected.

Damnedest thing... just put the build together last night and this was the biggest issue. If I connect my external Samsung USB DVD RW the system stops booting and only displays (B3) in the bottom right corner of my display. If I remove the USB plug the system boots and operates normally. If I connect it to the USB port after boot the system recognizes it and it works fine. The same issue occurs no matter which USB2/3 port I plug it into. I've banged around the BIOS and cannot see any issues in the boot sequence that would indicate an issue. Anyone else in das same boot?

They are working on it. They sent me a BETA BIOS to try out. The BIOS v1.10B3 was dated 3-17-2011 and it nearly bricked my system though. Here is the response I sent to them the other night after a few hours with a massive headache trying to bring my system back up:

I only wish they had informed me of the changes to the CPU voltage up front or included a change log so I could have made an informed decision as to whether or not I wanted to try the BETA BIOS. I was under the impression (mistakenly) that it simply addressed the USB DVD issue. I'll wait for the new release BIOS. I can live without the external USB DVD being plugged in at boot. Bricking my MOBO and having to RMA would be a far less desirable outcome. :p That said.. I'd still recommend this MOBO. It has relatively few issues and MSI support is responsive so far.

Mid 2007 Macbook Pro will not boot from windows 7 DVD

I'm trying to install Windows 7 64 bit on to my mid 2007 MBP. The DVD is valid, boots on a PC and I was able to load WIndows 7 into a VMWare fusion virtual machine on the very same system. I am convinced from those actions I have a good DVD and a good DVD drive.
What happens is the screen goes black and "1. 2. and Choose type of DVD boot:" appear. ( I may have the phrase slightly wrong) No matter what I type nothing happens. I've gone into the boot selecter and same thing happens if I select the DVD.

so you did not burn the DVD from ISO? that is what this usually is.
the error and yours being 2007 says you are trying 64-bit and your Mac does not support 64-bit versions it has 32-bit ROM (and likely cannot upgrade past Lion when 10.8 Mountain Lion comes out).

G5 will not boot from HD or DVD

I am attempting to startup a Mac G5 (Dual 1.8), but can only get a far as the gray screen with a flashing ?/Finder Icon. Machine will power up and fans will spin at max. Have tried to boot in various modes (safe mode, single user mode) with no success. Have tried to boot from G5 software install dvd (10.3) with no success. Any advice would be appreciated ;-)

IBook G3 will not boot from CD/DVD

Ok, I have an iBook G3.
I was restoring it to factory with the Software Restore disks which came with the unit as I was planning to move on to a new unit.. But there was a power cut in the middle of the process and the unit shut off. Now, it does not recognise a HD when booting holding option.
It also will not boot from any CD/DVD other than the Apple HW Test disk provided with the unit.. All other disks spin up and then get ejected, on the odd occasion it does not eject, it boots to a icon of a floppy diskette with a flashing ? (Saying that, I did manage to get it to load from the restore disk 1 once, but it just said it could not mount the image file)
The HW test disk returns no problems
I have reset PRAM multiple times, and reset nvram and all in Open Firmware. I have also reset PMU as a last resort, but no luck
Any ideas?

Apple DVD Player & Pioneer DVR-112D problem

I am not sure in which section I should post this question, so please forgive me.
I have an *iMac G4 700MHz Flat Panel* (without DVD drive) running Mac OS x 10.2.8.
I have recently purchased from macsales.com an OWC Value Line Dual Layer DVD-/+RW
*Pioneer DVR-112D 18X External optical drive*, and, following their instructions, I've installed PatchBurn 1.1b on my iMac. Unfortunately, when I am trying to play anything on my Apple DVD Player I keep recieving a message informing me about some error and saying that proper driver hasn't been installed. After that, DVD Player shuts down.
When I look at the diagram in Apple System Profiler (Devices and Volumes) I can see my new Pioneer drive either in USB Information section (when I connect it with my iMac via USB port) or FireWire Information section (connected via FireWire port), and the Pioneer drive is reported as a fully supported one. I never get my Pioneer drive shown in Bus section of the diagram (as it is shown on their website), but I guess it is OK, since it is an external drive.
What could be the cause of my problems with playing DVDs?
Do you think that it is a driver problem or application problem? Apple DVD Player hasn't been used before since I have not had any DVD drive on my iMac.
Any help will be appreciated.

iDVD6 & iMovie mandate a firewire connection (not usb).
In terms of the drivers, you'll have to contact the vendor to get more info should any drivers be required via firewire.
My own ext. FireWire Burner doesn't require any 3rd party drivers whatsoever. But this may vary from vendor to vendor and from drive to drive.

I need help before i go to the apple store for help.
My problem is that I have an Ipod touch which it was working fine but now it will not boot all the way.
It will not show the red bar when is ready to be turn off or reboot when using both buttons to reset it it will only come to the apple logo then goes blank.
I tried to restore via Itunes but same result, it will start showing is doing the extract then it will go blank and get a message saying that It can not find the device.
What do i need to do.

Power mac g5 2.3 late 2005. Leopard 10.5 installed on drive and boots ok to hhd.
how ever i need to go back to tiger 10.4.4 or later for my music hardware to work correctly..
Sooo i purchased a Tiger 10.4 black retail disk and it will not boot to it in any way all I end up with is a kernal report screen.
I have tried everything.. taking the drive out. adding a new formatted drive to install to.. no joy..just does not even look to be installing nothing..not even a spinning wheel thingy . if the disk was too early eg before late 2005 would it act like that and not install?
I'm lost here lol.

My iMac will not boot through Snow Leopard but will boot through Windows OS

My 2010 iMac will not boot in Snow Leopard, only Windows. Have tried reinstalling Snow leopard a few times and works only for a couple of minutes before freezing and doesnt reboot. Windows works perfect. Snow leopard just doesnt want to boot up past the Apple Logo. It was working fine one day and the next day it froze up and was able to reboot back into Snow Leopard but kept freezing. Now it doesnt load at all into Mac OS.

Possible scenarios:
1: The 10.6.3 SL retail disk is bad, it happens.
2: Your not using the 10.6.3 SL retail disk but one from another machine which doesn't have the drivers for that machine.
3: Your optical drive is funky or some other hardware issues.
4: Your trying to install 10.6 onto a PowerPC based Mac, no can do.
5: Your not using a wired keyboard for boot key commands, have some other hardware conflicts.
Possible solutions.
1: Copy the SL 10.6.3 disk using Disk Utility to another DVD, the error checking may resolve the original disk's issue.

3: Call Apple for a new 10.6.3 disk (and make copies for backup before Apple discontinues selling it)
If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.
