Q1. where is a good installation manual? my powermac manual only covers hardrive upgrades
Q2. will i need to reinstall OSX once the drive is in place?
Q3. i have lost my panther discs is there any concievalbe way i can save a new copy of OSX onto my external hd that doesnt involve piracy?
Q4. i'll probably also be installing more RAM and a replacement hardrive...which order do you suggest i might install them? or shall i just do them all at the same time?
hope thats not too confusing!
mnay thanks

Hi
Q1. where is a good installation manual? my powermac manual only covers hardrive upgrades
Installation instructions, including a QuickTime movie, can be found here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75312
Q2. will i need to reinstall OSX once the drive is in place?
No, although you may need to install PatchBurn to get full Disc Burner and iApp support if you're not using Tiger (OS X 10.4). It can be downloaded from here:
http://www.patchburn.de/
Q3. i have lost my panther discs is there any concievalbe way i can save a new copy of OSX onto my external hd that doesnt involve piracy?
Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! should work:
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
Q4. i'll probably also be installing more RAM and a replacement hardrive...which order do you suggest i might install them? or shall i just do them all at the same time?
As they're not really dependent on each other, the order shouldn't matter. I'd be tempted to do them all at once, although it is recommended to do them individually so if you do experience a problem it's easier to narrow down.
I hope this helps.

  • A Few Serious Questions for ALL Programmers

I am fairly new to programming ,and ,so far, have only finished 2 programming classes at the college I attend.
One class was a mix of Program Logic and C++.
    The other was Visual Basic.
Right now I am in Java 1.
I absolutely LOVED C++ and Visual Basic, especially the latter.
I know a lot of people bash VB but I really liked it and I don't know why so many people "Pick on" it.
Anyway, I finished TOP in my class for VB and am well on my way to finishing top in the Java class. Not because I am a genius, but because I really put alot into it and even the smallest things sometimes takes me hours.
I sit at my computer and when I get an idea, I usually do not stop until I have it figured out.
I find the answers most of the time but IT COMES REALLY HARD TO ME!
The problem I am having is this: When I come here and see some of the sample codes and sample codes that I see elsewhere, like for a " 3D Molecule viewer" I get VERY frustrated because I feel like, to get anywhwere, I will have to be a genius like the people who write such code.
My fear is that I will only get to be mediocre at best and there will be no place for me in the Programming world...
I guess what I am really asking is this:If you are a great programmer, like somone who can whip out code for ANYTHING, did you always "Get It" or did it seem like you never would and eventually had an epiphany and "Got It".?...
Also, how much of programming is about using existing classes and how much is totally writing your own Classes and Methods.
I know the phrase, "Why re-invent the wheel?" but how much good does it do for me if I parse code all the time?--what are your thoughts on this?

Not because I am a genius, but because I really put alot into it and even the smallest things sometimes takes me hours. I sit at my computer and when I get an idea, I usually do not stop until I have it figured out. I find the answers most of the time but IT COMES REALLY HARD TO ME!You have hit on a key component here. Your willingness to sit there for hours on end trying and trying and trying. Even then, when it still won't run properly, you get back at it tommorrow and try some more. Many people do not have this patience, and get distracted by the TV, or by their friends, or by their friends and TV ...and they walk away after an hour.
I too received the highest marks in nearly every class I took at school. Classmates used to say "Ya, but this stuff comes easy to you." No it didn't, I just spend more time with the labs than they did ...thats why I always received the better grades. I appeared to know more, but really I had just made more mistakes than most of my classmates. When it came to the exams, I was like "Oh, I made that mistake last week". My peers, however, had not made these mistakes yet and got tricked into choosing wrong answers on their exams.
I think programming experience creeps into our brain subconciously while we do it. One day, certain things that once boggled your mind will seem second nature. This comes from just doing it. I think you sound like you are on the right track. And don't worry, even though I know about a few things in Java ...I am constantly in awe of most of the good people I see throughout this forum. Everyone has something to teach, and everyone can always learn something new. What is important is that you don't get discouraged and give up. Now enough of the pep talk, where's my coffee and my compiler. Ah, there they are.
Good luck and I wish you all the best.

  • Just installed my new Pioneer DVR-111D, but one more question

The silver gate doesnt go down all the way when it opens...it stays open mid way only because of the open tray, so its bumping up against the bottom of the tray.
    Is this normal????

    ICarus,
yes, from what you say, this is normal.
The back of the door is a specially shaped "bump" to force the door down no near horizontal. As the tray opens it should push the door down, only making contact where the "bump" meets the bottom of the tray.
If you have other contact, or things jamming, it could be a sign that the DVR is situated just slightly too high or too low in the bay.
Can you confirm that you have removed the strip from the front of the tray ? This is the strip that makes up the "door" while the drive is in its "internal" format.

First of all, uninstall it with the uninstaller.
    Then:
    Install the ENGLISH version.
Change the language in the CC app to Korean.
Install the Korean version. (DON't uninstall the English version)
Change back the langauge in the CC app to English.
When your OS is running in English, InDesign will run in English with Korean functionality added, if your OS is running in Korean it will take the Korean User Interface, so let your OS run in English.
Every installer language will add needed plugins for the work with that language. E.g. If I install Hebrew, I get RTL functionality in German version, only if I would change the OS language it would change the language of InDesign, InDesign takes always as UI language the language of the OS if available, if not (in your case you have uninstalled English before), it takes any version which is available in the order of languages specified in the OS.
If you need to run your program in a different language than the OS but you have installed it in the language of the OS it becomes more difficult. You would have to use some system tools which are able to force a program to open with a different language. Most of those tools are freeware.

  • A few quick questions about publishing for iPhone/Android

I'm currently developing an iPhone/Android game in CS5 and I just have a few quick questions.  If anyone can answer even one or two I'd really appreciate it
1- I'm developing using a 320 x 480 resolution for the iphone.  When I tested it, the status bar on the top of the screen makes the edges disappear.  How should I turn off the status bar?  And if I can't what resolution should I use?
2- The performance is a little slow, and the game isn't very intense at all.  What's a good way to improve performance?
3- For Android, what should I do for the resolution?  Is there a standard resolution or do I have to have multiple resolutions for multiple devices?
4- Finally, is it worth getting the free trial of CS5.5 before I publish?  Is there anything in there that will be a huge improvement over CS5?
    All help is appreciated

    1. Publish in fullscreen
    2. Use bitmaps, cache all bitmaps, use minimized looping structure etc.
        http://www.yeahbutisitflash.com/?p=986
    3. Android: 480 * 800
    4. Not that much, but you have GUI updates and have a GUI publishing screen for packager for iphone too.

  • DVR-111D Support for G3 (BW)

I just installed a superdrive (DVR-111D) in my G3. Once I had it installed it reads CDs and DVDs just fine. But it will not support burning with the native OS. I then tried installing Toast and burning Disks that way with the same results.
I checked for firmware updates with Pioneer but I found nothing for Mac. I reinstalled my OS and it still will not support burning. I am running 10.4, not sure where I am at on updates because I'm still updating. But I don't think that is the problem since I was up to date before reinstalling my OS.
    Any ideas?

I'm a little surprised that Toast wasn't able to burn a DVD. Was Toast able to recognize your burner?
As far as the OS, OSX won't natively recognize the drive as a burner. You need something called Patchburn which will hack the installed drivers to allow supported burning in most if not all I-apps including the Finder. Try a Dogpile search for Patchburn for Tiger.
There were reports that the 10.4.6 update made some DVD burners native in Tiger.
My suggestion at this time is to update all the way to 10.4.6. If the burner is still not recognized, try Patchburn.

  • Another DVR-111D Question

As I commented in the previous post, my new DVR-111D is working great, but when I checked the profile I noticed it did not identify it as able to write to +R media -- that was something else I hoped to get from the upgrade (in addition to the speed). Is there something more I need to do to gain this capability?

    Hi
if you're using Tiger, the 'Unsupported' part shouldn't matter. With earlier versions of the OS, you'd have to use PatchBurn to add support for the drive so it could be used from the iApps. Tiger has basic iApp support for most drives anyway.
I believe there is one version of iDVD though where you can't burn to dual layer discs unless the drive is reported as 'Apple shipped/supported'. Full support for the DVR-110D seems to have been added in 10.4.6, so I guess it's possible (probable) full support for the DVR-111D will be added in a future OS update.
I've always assumed 'Unsupported' means Apple aren't shipping that particular drive yet in any of their Macs and therefore don't officially support it, although there's no real reason why it shouldn't work.

  • Installation Question--Wiring for Internet Modem/Router? Help please

Hi all, I am scheduled to have the FIOS TV, internet, and phone installed at the end of this month.  I currently have DirecTV HD.  I have searched the boards and haven't found a clean answer...wondering if you experts have any advice.  My questions are:
    1.  I do not have a Cable or Cat5 (have telephone line) line run to my office where my computer and current Verizon DSL are.
---When the installer comes, will he run a cable line/Cat5 to the office?
---Do you need both cable line and Cat5 for the modem/router?
---If so, will he fish down the wall (above attic)?
    2.  Since I currently have DirecTV, I have a multiswitch that distributes all the cable lines throughout the house.  The multiswith, however, is in the crawlspace and a good distance from where the current outdoor telephone box is.  I don't even have a cable box at the house.  So, my questions for this are:
---When the installer comes, will he run a cable line from the ONT to the location in the crawspace where all the cable lines converge?
---If so, the installer uses a splitter, right?
THANK YOU all so much for any insight.  My big concern is that in the office there is not a cable line run, and I don't want the installer to drill through the wall to come to the inside.  If I have to fish the wire down the wall from the attic, I want to do so before the install date.
    Thanks again for your time.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Arun covered most of this quite nicely...
    1.  I do not have a Cable or Cat5 (have telephone line) line run to my office where my computer and current Verizon DSL are.
---When the installer comes, will he run a cable line/Cat5 to the office? Yes
---Do you need both cable line and Cat5 for the modem/router?  No, one or the other works just fine...However if you decide to have the router fed by cat5, then a coax is necessary also to feed ip addresses to the set top boxes...
---If so, will he fish down the wall (above attic)?   Maybe, no guarentee's there.  If there is an existing Coax in the room already, he may just use that
Correct
---If so, the installer uses a splitter, right? Correct again.  More than likely he shouldn't have to change out any of the coax cables as satellite usually uses the better grade coax.
.  My big concern is that in the office there is not a cable line run, and I don't want the installer to drill through the wall to come to the inside.  If I have to fish the wire down the wall from the attic, I want to do so before the install date.  I would suggest this.  That way your guarenteed to have the wires run in the wall.

  • BP for Assets - Installation question

    Hi everybody,
I'm going trough the installation guide for BP for Assets (SAP note 446426).
It says in order to create the systems nessecary, I have to edit systems.xml and jcoDestination.xml by hand.
Is there a way to create the system(s?) using the portal interface, and if so, can you tell me how or point me to the right documentation?
    Thanks a lot!

  • Reasonably new PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D will NOT RECOGNIZE CD's

I bought a new PIONEER DVR-111D drive to replace my old superdrive about 5-6 months ago.
All was fine and good until about 2 weeks ago when it was suddenly unable to recognize CD's. Audio CD's, blank CD's, my highly valued "must insert to play" Halo CD, etc...
I noted this problem originally when trying to burn a playlist on a CD and Toast would pop out an error message about "Wrong Media Type". They worked fine before. This only happens on CD's (and yes, I tried a few different brands) - not DVD's.
    DVD's (Dual Layer & -R & +R) read/write/burn fine.
But when I put a CD in the tray and close it, out spits out the disc (and I've tried several different types) about 20 seconds later.
I've tried every option I could find to fix this issue including...
    http://www.macworld.com/forums/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=440595&Main= 439419
(trashing com.apple.kernelcaches, trashing Extensions.kextcache and when those suggestiosn didn't work, trashing ~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb - all to no avail)
I've uninstalled and then reinstalled Patchburn. Didn't work.
I used Preferential Treatment to fix my User Prefs and System Prefs.
    Doesn't help.
Now Toast hangs whenever I try and insert a CD while its running - but when I use Toast's "Recorder Settings" to identify the drive it says CD-RW Yes and CD-R Yes.
I really can't understand why this is happening. Isn't the laser that writes to DVD's the same as the one for CD's? If so, where is this "recognition" issue (can't recognize CD's but has no problem with DVD's) happening?
Here's the System Info for this drive:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D:
    Manufacturer: PIONEER
    Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D
    Revision: 1.23
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
I'd be very grateful for any help on this issue.

    Hi-
There are two separate laser/laser lens for each of CD and DVD media. You could have lost the CD side. Could also be a blob of dust in the way.
Could try cleaning, or, try and get warranty replacement.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 Installation Question

How can I tell if my software installed properly? The software came with three discs, and it only installed the first disc. I am new to Photoshop, and do not know if my software installed properly? Can anyone help?

    Gautham K,
    Thank you for your quick replies. I have checked,and my OS is indeed 64 bit. I have been using the 32 bit version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, since I installed it last evening. I have a few quick questions;
Will I loose any functionality if I stay with the 32 bit version versus un-installing and installing the 64 bit version from disc 2?
If I decide to un-install, and re-install from disc 2, will there be any software registration issues (as I have already registered the software)?
Thanks again for all of your help.

  • Installing Pioneer DVR 111D?

Since Apple doesn't appear to be addressing the issue of the Sony drives that won't read old DVDs. I went to NewEgg and got a Pioneer 111D and I am going to install that in the lower bay. How should the jumpers be set on this? I have removed the faceplate, anything else I need to know?

Well after reading many discussion forum posts I bought and installed two of the Pioneer DVR 111Ds, since my Sony units just stopped recognizing blank CDs and DVDs for burning (just as with many others' machines). Well, the Pioneer units worked fine..........for about 15 minutes. I burned several CDs and DVDs, no problems, but then, as with the Sonys after a few months, the Pioneers just stopped recognizing blank, burnable discs.
Is there anything else to try??? Very frustrating.

  • Installing a Pioneer DVR-111D...

Please bear with me as I have had no experience ever installing optical drives. But I am interested in upgrading my current stock combo drive to one of those spiffy new Pioneer DVR-111Ds that I keep hearing everyone talk about.
However my intial question is, what happens to the front slide door if I install a new drive in my G5? I don't exactly know the technical hardware term for it, but the one that's mac hardware specific and opens before the actual drive bay door slides out. Does that door still operate just as normal with a new drive or do I have to manually open it and disable it?
Lastly, whats up with all the flashing stuff I hear also? Flashing bios i presume? Which is another area in computers I have little experience in.
Any info would be great. Thanks!

Quite a bit about it here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1900760#1900760
and more if you enter "111D" in the search box at top right of the forum.
The main point with keeping the silver optical drive gate operating smoothly is to remove the plastic bezel with "DVD", "CD", etc. on it from the front of the tray.
Sometimes the 'stand-offs' can be tricky, but there is some help here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0807.pdf
Flashing is mentioned in the first link above, but shouldn't be necessary - esp. if you combo up to 10.4.7

Please post again if any of it isn't clear.
