Pismo freezes if screen is touched

my friend has a 400mhz pismo w/ 512mb (running latest panther) and whenever she touches or moves the screen at all (for example to plug in her ipod or anything else) the computer will freeze, forcing her to force the restart of her computer. i'm probably going to reinstall osx for her anyway bc her hd is a mess but are there any suggestions for fixing this annoying problem?
i saw another post where the computer lost power if the screen was moved and taking off and reattaching the display seemed to solve the problem. unfortunately i don't have any torx screwdrivers to do that. any other suggestions?
thanks
dominik

Dominik,
You are correct in assuming this is a hardware issue and does turn up occasionally on these boards. Usually the problem is a poorly seated component or possibly a connector that has developed some oxidation. Moving the display flexes or torques the body of the powerbook and causes the brief loss of contact.
I don't believe the display itself would cause this problem; if the data ribbon cable, for example, that runs through the clutch (hinge) is worn/damaged, it will scramble the display but not cause a freeze. Probably the Pismo to which you are referring, which lost power and was corrected with a display removal/reinstall, had another component reseated in the disassembly process.
You may wish to try this first: Lift off the keyboard and lay it face down on the palm rest...no need to disconnect the ribbon cable; lift off the aluminum heat shield; remove the top memory module; press down VERY hard on the right side of the microprocessor card next to the HD and closest to the palm rest. The Pismo has a difficult card to properly seat. At this point, you could just connect the power adapter, start up, then flex the 'book. A poorly seated microprocessor card might exhibit the behavior you describe.
If the problem is still present, you will want to progress further is the disassembly. Please read this document closely (memory: both slots) before moving into the 'book.

  • Pismo Freezes with Netgear WG511T + Orangeware driver - Please Help

    Hello,
For months I have been using Orangeware wireless driver on my Pismo G3/400 OSX 10.4 in combination with Netgear WG511T card with no problems at all.
Suddenly one day a black square appeared on the grey background when booting my Pismo. I red that is something to do with Kernel Panic but I don’t know much about that.
So it took several rebooting until Pismo appeared to be OK. But then a few times the screen just went black. That eventually stopped but instead Pismo would just freeze.
I then discovered that if I take my Netgear card out my Pismo, it unfreezes and start to work normally. If I then try to insert the card again while the computer is on the card wouldn’t connect with my router but only one LED would flash.
I eventually reinstalled OS but to no avail. I am so puzzled.
I would be ever so grateful if somebody could make a logical sense of all these symptoms.
    Many thanks again

    Alex,
Sorry to hear of your contuing problems...
The PC card icon in the menu bar is reporting as expected; see the bottom of this page:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Buffalo/BUF80211B/
Have you tried a Safe Boot (restart pressing the shift key), then inserting the card?
Have you uninstalled the Orangeware software?
Have you run Software Update to get the latest AirPort software? It is now up to version 4.2. My suggestion is after Software Update has checked what you need, go to the menu bar > Update > Download Only. You can then restart the computer with shift key down (Safe Boot/Safe Mode) and then run the installers.
I have no idea if any of this will work, but give it a try.
If you have access to a FireWire PC card, pop it in and see if the Pismo freezes; this card is natively supported by OSX. If you wish to test the FireWire card, you will need a FireWire HD that has its own power supply since PC cards supply little bus power.

  • Daily Freezes/Blue Screen Shutdowns on HP M8100N Desktop Product GC673AA w/ Vista

Hi - Hopefully someone can help me fix the Daily Freezes/Blue Screen Shutdowns on my HP M8100N Desktop Product GC673AA w/ Vista.  Occasional freezes started about 3 months ago and ocurred maybe once every 3 weeks.  They gradually progressed to the point that I am booted off my PC daily.  I've resarched message boards and tried to resolve on my own with no success.  I get different messages on The Blue Screen that appears since I changed the settings to not allow automatic shutdown.  Among the Error messages are the following:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. (i Wrote the additional detail  which I can provide if needed, but all of the messages reference disabling BIOS memory options for caching/shadowing)  I've tried but cannot find the option anywhere when I get into the BIOS screen.
         KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR ( i CAN PROVIDE ADD'L INFO IF NEEDED)
CHECK ADEQUATE DISK SPACE.  IF DRIVER IDENTIFIED IN STOP MSGE DISABLE OR UPDATE IT.  CHECK BIOS UPDATES.        DISABLE BIOS MEMORY OPTIONS
         BAD_SPOOL_HEADER
These are 4 Blue Screen mesages since I changed the Shutdown settings.
Any help would be appreciated.  I've tried all kinds of fixes with no success.  I only download basic HP, Vista, and basic software updates.  My spyware is AVG, Advanced System Care, and Spyware Dr.
I've considered a System Recovery but have never been able to do a backup since buying the PC in 2007.  I always get the Error message:  BACKUP ERROR I/O Device Error OX8007045D.
Any help resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Vista - Updating iTunes Library Error, Freeze, Blue Screen - Work Around?!

I may have a solution & partial root cause for the "Update iTunes Library" freeze / blue screen issue.
    Details:
    - I've been running Windows Vista since its release.
    - iTunes worked fine under Vista since my XP->Vista clean install.
    - I updated to iTunes version 7.1.1.5 a month ago and the problem started.
    - After installation, iTunes tried to update the Library and after a minute or two, it hung and then went to a blue screen. I restarted iTunes MANY times over the month and tried to re-install it - nothing worked.
    Solution? (for me anyway)
Recall that when you log into Vista, even if you're the only user, you DO NOT have administrator privilages. You are only granted those AFTER a request and authorization (I think this is where iTunes hangs). Now, this solution might be a stretch, but iTunes worked after I stumbled across this. I took two steps and am not sure which or if the combination worked...
    - I was working with system commands that required administrator authorization. So the system prompted me, as it does everything, and I was granted them. Was this key? I don't know.
    - I also copied the iTunes Library to my Desktop, started iTunes and let it create a new, blank, iTunes Library. I closed iTunes and copied my old iTunes Library file back from the Dekstop.
When I restarted iTunes, it started to update the iTunes Library and this time it completed successfully.
Not taking anything for granted, I did a shutdown/restart to make sure it was clean.
    - I did run into a blue screen AGAIN at shutdown. But this time it rebooted clean and iTunes has been running perfectly for 3 days.
    I hope this helps someone!

what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're just seeing a flash of a blue screen, we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

hey i have a 2nd gen ipod touch and its a little cracked and half the screen isnt touch screen anymore what do i do

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

How do I freeze the screen so I can set the ipad on a counter and use a recipe that's on the screen?

Settings>General>Auto Lock>Never. The iPad will not go to sleep this way. If you want to lock screen rotation - use the side switch or if that doesn't work - double tap the home button, swipe to the right in the task bar - and lock the screen in there. The lock icon will be all the way to the left.

  • Macbook air freezes in screen save mode (Mid 2011 model using Mountain Lion

My MacBook Air freezes during screen save mode & is completely unresponsive.  The only option is to press & hold the power button to force a power down then restart the laptop.  This issue is not intermittent but happens every time the laptop is in screen save mode for any length of time (+20 mins).
The laptop is a Mid 2011 model. 1.8 GHz i7, 250 GB solid state HD, 13" display with 4 GB RAM.  I updated to Mountain Lion latest version about 1 month ago.

Hi there. I'm not using any 3rd party screen saver software, only the standard Mountain Lion supplied stuff.
I did have to get the Genuis Guys to reset my SMC as my battery, fan & power lead were showing problems.  Those issues are now solved but this has persisted.
I am considering a reinstal of the OS system but that is a 1 hour download following by ?? hours of waiting for the program to restart.
I'll try using one of the other screen saver options to test that.
    Thanks for that idea.

    Hi, RomeroSalsa.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are experiencing an issue with the responsiveness of your iPad mini while charging.  I would need a little more information on how you are charging the device to provide a better answer.  While the steps below are not exactly labeled for this issue, they may help resolve the issue.
    If the battery doesn’t charge
If the battery doesn’t charge, unplug your device and try these steps:
Look at the connector at the bottom of your device and make sure it’s free of debris.
If you're using a USB power adapter, make sure it's plugged in all the way and the power outlet is working. If you're connecting to a computer, make sure it's on and can charge your device. To charge an iPad, you might need to use a USB power adapter and plug into a power outlet.
Try a different USB cable, USB power adapter, or USB port.
If everything seems to be working, reconnect your device and wait for 30 minutes.
If your device still doesn’t charge, try to restart it while it's connected to power. If you can't restart, reset your device.
If you can’t charge your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Cursor freezes then screen turns blue....

Hi All. This is the only issue my MacPro has had in the 1.5 years or so that I've owned it. Every once in a while the cursor freezes, the screen turns blue for about 4 seconds then everything goes back to normal. It's not really a problem but it's kind of annoying. Has anyone else seen this strange behavior? I'm thinking that re-installing the OS would fix it but that seems a little drastic.
    Any ideas?

Hi, How much Free Space on your HDD?
Two ways to go on this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
    Or...
I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Hp pavilion s5715 - computer freezes / black screen after i use it somewhat intensively

    Hi,
I recently bought the HP Pavilion s5715 but when I used it even somewhat intensively (playing Left 4 Dead for example) it'll freeze / black screen after a short while (10 minutes or so).
I assume this has to do with overheating, but what would be a good fix for this? And how can I figure out what component overheats?
