Pismo main Battery self-discharge

The battery is charged only in sleep-mode. During computer usage the Amperage is 0 mA,
indicating the battery is not being charged nor loaded.
However, the charge statistics shows a constant fall while the PB is in use and a rise on
sleep-mode.

I suppose the self-discharge is a normal behavior anyway, but is there a way to determine
the right rate and thus estimate the quality of the part?

If you are really asking about a Pismo (officially, "PowerBook G3 Firewire"), they have a separate area here:
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=121
It's a very active forum with lots of Pismo owners, so is the best place to ask. That area also covers the Wallstreet and Lombard G3 PowerBooks.

  • Helix dock battery self-discharge??

Windows 8.1 with Update 1 and all the latest firmwares that could be updated. When shut down the system, and unplugged the AC Adapter, with tablet on the dock, supposing tablet battery and dock battery all full, after a night, you would find the dock battery only have about 85% left. BUT seperates the tablet and dock, also without AC, both of them wouldn't self-discharge any at all.
So I'm wondering why is it? The dock battery charges the tablet battery? But the tablet battery is also full at the beginning. The PROBLEM of firmware of the keyboard dock? I don't know. The design issue? I want an answer and a solution. This really bothers me. It made me not unplug the AC adapter.
    THX

The same thing is happening to me too: drop from 100% to 85% in about 6h of sleep. I assumed it's something wrong with the dock battery, since it held under normal office load less than 1h. I went to service, they replaced the dock battery (defective they said) but I have the exact same behavior as yours, even after replacing battery, reinstalling windows etc

  • Ultrabay Battery -- Change discharge behavior?

I have a T400 with the optional ultrabay battery. The behavior seems to be that the extra battery is discharged entirely before moving on to the main battery. My understanding is that completely discharging a Li-Ion battery shortens the battery's lifespan. It seems to make more sense to either (1) drain the main battery first since it's larger and less likely to completely discharge before you find a power outlet or (2) alternate between the two batteries.
Is there anyway to adjust the battery settings to achieve either of these?

    Hi all,
I think, you missunderstand these 0% of battery charge. This does not mean, that the battery is discharged to 0 Volts. In that case, the battery would be destroyed immediately. These 0% are with respect to a minimum threshold voltage, such that the battery will not be damaged or its lifetime drastically reduced. When I have a look at my "fully" discharged ultrabay battery, I see that it has still more then 11V, which is no problem. The battery has 3 cells, each with 3.6 Volts. And a Li-Po Cell (Li-Ion is similar) can be discharged to about 2.8V without being damaged. 3 x 2.8V = 8.4V V for the whole battery. 11V is far avay from that, so there is enough reserve. If the voltage falls under a certain voltage, the computer turns off but not just because there is not enough power. Instead this is a safety mechanism for the battery which is implemented in hardware. So I think it's not necessary to wory about the battery.
Even though I think, that the user should be able to decide which battery discharges first. Especially if lenovo writes:
"Since the battery works in the Ultrabay you don't have to suspend the system to swap out the system battery to use the ThinkPad for an extended period of time."
That's what I wanted to do, change the main battery, while the system is on. But with this default behaviour of battery management, it's impossible because the U-battery is discharged first. Escept you carry the U-battery seperately with you the whole day and insert it shortly before the main battery is empty. But that's not very comfortable.
I foud one way to achieve that the main battery is discharged first. I have a T400 and if you apply the small switch on the right if as you wanted to remove the battery and the pad to pull jumps out, then the main battery is discharging while the ultrabay battery is still connected (appears in the Power manager) and supplies the PC with power if the main battery gets empty. But also that is not very elegant.
I hope I helped a little. If someone has a real solution to this problem, please tell us. I know that there is a solution, even if not supported by lenovo, what is a shame. (Something with ACPI events I guess but I don't have experience with that)

  • Pram and Main Battery relationship

AS a result of the self igniting battery problem I removed the main battery from my 15 month old Powerbook while waiting for the replacement battery to arrive.
After a few days the Powerbook would no longer have the time and date settings when initially powered up.
A check of the forums indicated a Pram battery failure, so I called Apple Care described the problem, explaining that the main battery had been removed to avoid any insurance liability re self ignition. The Applecare agent said - the Pram battery needed replacing, take it to a local Apple dealer/specialist and they would be able to replace it while I wait. I rang two repair shops and was told it would take about 10 days to fix as they did not have any PRAM bateries in stock.
Took the Powerbook in to the repair shop on Tuesday, I was telephoned to day, with the news that there was nothing wrong with the machine and that the Pram had discharged because of the removal of the main battery.
    My questions are :
If the diagnosis is correct why did the Applecare agent tell me to get a new PRAM battery fitted?
Why did he tell me that it was a while you wait job when it appears that the PRAM battery is not kept in stock.
Oh and incidently on my IBM Thinkpad the Bios battery lasted for nearly 6 years with often the main battery removed to reduce the number of power cylcles of the battery before I had to easily replace it.
    G4 Powerbook 15 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    More information
I collected my Powerbook from the service agent today.
I expected that Apple would re-imburse the repair shop for the time that they had spent checking out the computer, however Apple only pay for labour when parts are ordered.
    So to net out
The repair shop spent time checking the machine at their expense
I spent time on the phone to Apple care, spent time backing up the hard disk and removing sensitive data, and driving 70 miles.
I hope that the qusetionaire I filled in in response to the Apple Care call will be carefully considered by Apple.

  • Equium L10: Issue with main battery and RTC battery

    Hi
I have the Toshiba Equium L10 and it is around 14 months old and I am having problems with the battery pack and how long it lasts after a full charge. I am also having problems with the RTC battery and an ERROR 0271: Check date and time settings message when I turn on the notebook.
With regard to the battery pack, I can fully charge it up in around 3 hours but when I start to use it, it only seems to last around one and a half hours or so and it then needs to be charged again. I may have it on for around 40 minutes or so and then turn it off and come back to it later or in a day(s) or so. How long should I expect from a fully charged battery?
Regarding the RTC batttery, this is really becoming a pain and I have only started getting the ERROR 0271 message at boot time, over the last few weeks or so. I can fully charge the battery pack up and then leave it for a couple of days, but when I turn it on, I get the ERROR 0271 message about the date and time settings being incorrect. Surely after a full charge, the RTC battery should last longer than a couple of days?
The user manual states that if the RTC battery is exhausted or getting low, you should charge the RTC battery for 24 hours, but in another part of the manual it states between 24 and 48 hours, but how can you charge it for that long when the sections regarding the charging of the battery pack state that after charging the battery pack you should disconnect the AC adaptor because leaving it connected will shorten the life of the battery pack. So how can we charge the RTC battery for 24 to 48 hours if we are not supposed to leave the AC adaptor connected after the battery pack is charged - which is around three hours. Any suggestions regarding these problems, would be appreciated.
By the way we all know it's easy to change the RTC/CMOS battery in your desktop base unit, but how easy is it to change it in a Toshiba L10 Equium?
    Regards
    Brave0

    Hi Brave0,
The normal recommendation for the CMOS (RTC) battery is to leave the notebook connected to the AC adapter for at leat 12 hours once the main battery is fully charged. The charging circuitry will divert the charge current to the RTC battery automatically and no current will be passed to your main battery.
The recommendation for not leaving the AC adapter plugged in when the main battery is fully charged is really only applicable to older notebooks which did not use Li-Ion batteries and consequently they had to be fully discharged before recharging so as to avoid any 'memory' effects in the battery.
With modern Li-Ion batteries it is quite safe to leave the battery in place when fully charged and still power the notebook from the AC adapter. The charging circuitry will not pass any charge to the battery if it is fully charged.
    regards,

  • Pismo pram/battery question

    Hello.
My Pismo is not charging my fairly new battery. The computer has also been having some sleep/time issues which made think it was the pram. Could the pram be responsible for not recognizing or charging the new battery...or do I have a PMU problem.
The computer is due for a new pram, but I didn't think the pram had much to do with battery charging. Does it?
    Thanks.

    eric,
A definitive test for troubleshooting a battery issue is to swap batteries with another Pismo or Lombard, but one may not be available.
Regardless of whether you have a bad battery and/or failed charging circuits, your Pismo should still sleep as long as the power adapter is connected with software and/or a corrupted power manager being the most common issue.
Also, if you are using the power manager reset button on the back panel to restart (or reset the power manager), it will require the reset of time/date.
I would try your troubleshooting in this manner:
    1. Keep the power adapter connected at all times plus disconnect ALL peripherals.
    2. Pull out the main battery a few inches so it is not engaged.
    3. From a shut down state, reset the power manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    4. Start up and reset the time/date.
    5. Now test if your Pismo will sleep/wake normally.
You can also test your PRAM battery (the internal rechargeable backup battery), but also read how this battery works vs. a desktop PRAM battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30580
You can then insert the main battery and see if it is recognized. I suspect you have a failing battery •IF• the Pismo will occasionally see and charge the battery.
We can do additional testing based on your results.

  • Ultrabay battery won't switch to main battery and results in sudden shutdown.

    Hi,
I just changed my windows 7 32 bit to 64 but version. The power manager version is 3.66 and driver version 1.64, bios version is    LENOVO 7UET93WW (3.23 , 12/15/2011). The ultrabay battery drains to zero and won't switch to main battery, which leads to a sudden shutdown without any warning. In windows 7 32 bit version, I don't have such problem. It's annoying. My computer is T400 7147 CTO.
    Thanks!
    chicagot400

Hi I have the exact same problem. I have a T400 2764 CTO. Changes I have recently made (past 2 weeks): I upgraded to Windows 7 64, added a PC Card media reader, added an express card USB 3.0, a Samsung 256 GB SSD and the Ultra Bay Battery. Everything was working great... both batteries recognized, ran Lenovo Update... Have everything...
Well the battery meter recognizes both batteries (a 4-cell and a 3-cell), combines their life, but it drains the 3-cell first to ZERO... and isn't bright enough to figure out how to switch before abruptly dropping power to the system.
Hopefully like the ATI switchable graphics that had bugs for ages this battery issue eventually gets fixed. Let me know if you figure out any solution. AND LENOVO, if you are reading, try and set it up so that the 2 battery usage maximizes the life of both batteries with whatever controller you put together.
    Thanks.

  • Since iOS 7update my IPAD battery Is discharging very quickly what should i do

Since iOS 7update my IPAD battery Is discharging very quickly what should i do.  This problem only occured since last iOS 7.0.2 update

Poke around the settings. There's a lot of notifications turned on that you may not need. There's also the backgroun app refresh that will be using battery and the background updating of apps.
So turn stuff off, if it doesn't help another thing that you can try is to go into the settings and reset all settings. Which is a bit of a pain because you'll need to retweak everything, but sometimes starting fresh can clear glitches

  • T420s battery being discharges even when laptop is closed

So my T420s, even when I close the lid the battery still discharges. I talked to Lenovo help and they said it was the battery but I bought a new one and the problem is still exactly the same. Please help me! Any ideas what to do?

The computer is still on when the lid is closed. If you want it to turn off and not not use power you'll need to shutdown or hibernate with the fingerprint reader (if so equipped) turned off. You could also set it up to sleep, which will still use some power, but not that much.

  • Battery starts discharging when I plug in the charger

Ok my problem is that when i plug-in the charger my laptop battery starting discharging. Any ideas?
Moderator edit: Matched subject to content.

I just ran into this problem with a friend's notebook (not Lenovo, but I did get her to buy a ThinkPad now that she's replacing the old machine ), and it turned out to be the power brick. The cord pulled enough energy for the notebook to see that it was plugged in, but not enough to power the system or charge the battery.
Try reattaching the the plug to the power brick. On my friend's laptop, adjusting the cord restored enough power to charge. It wasn't a 'solution,' but it did show where the problem was and a new power brick ultimately solves it.

  • Tecra S3: battery fully discharged if it's off for one week

    I´ve got a Tecra S3:
    Intel® Centrino? Mobiltechnologie Intel® Pentium® M Prozessor 760
    XP Pro/ 1024 DDR2/ 80GB/ 15.0" TFT/ DVD-Super-Multi(DL)/ Wi-Fi
Mostly I work with ac power. Only sometimes I need the battery.
But when I use the battery, discharge it fully.
After that the battery is charged over night.
When my S3 is off for one week,
my battery is fully discharged and the S3 needs ac power.
    Is that normal?
Why is my battery fully discharged
if the S3 is off for only one week.

    Hi
The fact is that battery looses the energy also if the notebook is disabled.
Im not sure about the time and how long should it takes.
The same thing happens on my old Satellite A50.
I thing it depends from the battery performance and how old the battery is.

  • X1 (1286) main battery good condition at 1% and not charging

    Hello,
I recently noticed that the main battery is no longer charging. It is now at 1% and not charging when AC plugged in (screenshots of powermanager attached). Power Mgr says it is in good condition. Since I usually have the slice battery attached on the road or AC plugged in at home, it has always been in Optmize for Health mode.
The battery gauge reset procedure was performed and hasn't helped.
I've run the battery firmware update utility and it has stated that battery firmware is up to date.
And as always the case, 1yr warranty expired  3weeks ago
I'll try updating BIOS (1.66) to latest, which I believe is 1.69, and post back if any success.
Any clues please? Thanking you in advance.

Unfortunately updating bios and power manager hasn't resolved this. The new version of power manager 6.54 dispays same battery details.
Furthermore, i am now noticing that the slice battery charges to only 80%  despite setting charge mode to fully charge. Could be experiencing this problem (x1 slice battery won't pass 80% unless internal battery is 100%) too, unfortunately no answers to that post.

  • Noika E5 Battery is discharge quickly

    Hi All,
    I purchased Nokia E5 on  1st May 2012 ,  i.e. 10 month before, But now from lst 2-3 month
come to know  Battery is discharge quickly after making it full charge.
Can you please suggest , what to do ?
Can I get replacement  of it , and how much time it will take to check battery ?
    Thanks in Advance

Is there any change in pattern of use ? Have you started using applications like WhatsApp that may be the reason !!
Anyway, the Warranty on Battery is 6 months so if the Battery itself is at fault then you will have to buy a new one. The actual checking time may be a few minutes but it depends on your local Nokia Care ..

  • Without main battery, CMOS checksum invalid.Doesn't keep time and BIOS settings. Backup batt is OK.

Good morning all, some months ago my dv6-6159sl laptop started to have this problem: WITHOUT MAIN BATTERY (using as desktop replacement with AC adapter only, unplugging from wall outlet when I don't use it) immediatly after power on button pressed, I get black screen error" CMOS Checksum is invalid  .  CMOS reset (502) . " and it restarts with all BIOS settings reset and time reset at 00:00:00 year 2010... The problem appears randomly: for days I don't get it, then I get it once, twice...then everything OK for one, two, many days...and again shows up...and so on... NOTE THAT BACKUP BATTERY CR2032 HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE (for being sure) AND IS BRAND NEW, AND IS OK: A VOLTMETER SAYS 3,03 V . Tried to update BIOS to last F1.B , tried to revert back to F1.A and previous version (that is: I tried every single available BIOS on support page...)... No luck...Tried to recover BIOS with this procedure: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04126730  ... nothing changed...Tried to recover whole system...Nothing fixed... Notes: hardware hasn't changed , HDD and RAM are OK (tests done). What to do now?
