Pismo, OS 10.4.2, sound control

The sound control (little speaker icon) in the top menu bar no longer allows me to adjust the volume of my audio. Everything else works just dandy.
Does anyone have a handle on this? I have checked all the Sys Prefs repeatedly.

It is already there up on the menu bar. It just won't work the volume control slider up or down.
Ooops, after rechecking because of what you said I found that it was set to the "Internal Microphone" instead of to the "Sound Input"
Thanx

    Hello,
I am new to OS X and i have tried to adjust the sound when plugged to the secondary monitor through HDMI which of course didn't work.
I have been using windows and a linux for years now, and everything works seamless.
I believe that this could be easily solved by Apple as long as their are willing to do it. Having a virtual device for sound control is not that difficult.
    All the bests
There are two ways to 'solve' this.
Alter the volume before sending the digital signal down the HDMI connection, this means the signal is no longer exactly as it was originally. Apple's current (apparent) view is that this should be done at the end i.e. playback device not at the originating (Mac) end so as to minimise the number of devices making changes to the signal. Basically 'volume' is the amplitude of a an analogue wave form. (Where else do you think the term 'amp' comes from.)
Not to alter the volume of the signal at the Mac end but instead to send a signal down the HDMI cable to tell the end i.e. playback device to alter the volume, this uses a standard called CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), unfortunately at the moment no Macs support this standard - it has to be supported at a hardware level so a simple Apple software upgrade to implement this is not possible. I have previously logged an official enhancement request for this with Apple - the more people who do this the more likely it is to be added, since now all Macs include HDMI it might happen at some point.
As an addendum to option 2 above, see http://www.pulse-eight.com/store/products/104-usb-hdmi-cec-adapter.aspx this would however require software support in whatever application is being used. XBMC for Mac does support it.

  • How can I turn off sound controll whele on the Satellite A200

How can I turn off the external sound controll in front of laptop - the wheel? It does not work, sound volume is permanently muted.
    OS: MS Windows XP
    Thanks

    Thank you Jaba,
it is Toshiba Satellite A200 Series. Drivers, its configuration and configuration of operating system is OK. The wheel is mechanical damaged, so that is the point. I have to disable its function in operating system. But where can I disable it? I have tried to uninstall Toshiba utilities (controls, hotkeys), reinstall drivers. I have tried to find an option in BIOS, there was no one.
btw: I am a linux administrator, but I have advanced knowledge of windows systems so you can be short.

  • Sound control is greyed out on external output since updating to Mavericks

I have recently updated my macbook pro to Mavericks and the sound control is now greyed out / disabled when I connect the output to my LG television to use as an external speaker (and monitor from the simultaneous display output). Everything is works fine with the internal speakers and if I hook up headphones instead of my television or external speakers. On external speakers, only the external device allows to control the volume. This is very irritating as I need to have my television remote controller handy every time I was to tweak the volume now. Any idea how to fix that? Please don't tell me it's a new "feature" that comes with Mavericks!

Had the same problem. It was the built in switch that switches sound from built speakers to headphones, muting the built in speakers when the jack is inserted. The switch is internal and built in the headphone socket. I sprayed WD 40 and it now works again fine
    I hope it helps

sound control not working with my bluetooth keyboard

        UAVPilot,
Thank you for the information. I do show that the device and car are capable of this function. I do not show any reason you should not be hearing the notifications. One thing you will want to check is that the sound for both your notifications and media are turned up. Also you can look into going into Settings>Apps>S voice Drive Mode> Clear Cache. This should clear any possible bugs in the application. Please keep us updated on this and we can check on other options.

  • My ipad 3 keeps losing sound controls

My ipad 3 keeps losing its sound controls. I have tried all the advice online about going into settings and moving the switch on the side by the volume controls.
When it happens (its been at least once a week) the only thing that sorts it out is doing a reset (holding the home/power button down) and then waiting for a few hours.
When it happens if I double click the home button, swipe right and go to the volume controls there the control is empty (the little movable tab is gone)
What is wrong? Do I need to take it in?

Thanks for the reply. I tried that however it has just happened again for the second time today. :(

  • Can't select Airplay in Sound control panel

I can't select my Airplay speakers in the Sound control panel. Airplay works fine from iTunes, but when I try to selct it in the Sound control panel, I click on the Airplay speakers and the selection bounces back up to Line out. Restarting the machine fixes the problem for a while, but that's not really a solution.

You have to restart the core audio be pasting the following line into termnal
    sudo kill `ps -ax | grep 'coreaudiod' | grep 'sbin' |awk '{print $1}'`

    HI,
    Restart the Mac.
If that does not work  I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • Dear Native Volume/Sound Controls,

You really don't make a lot of sense.
Namely, I take issue with the fact that you link ALL the Alerts/Notifications to the same Volume Control.
    Why?
    Well, for example:
Just because I need a SUPER LOUD ALARM CLOCK to wake me up so I can catch an early-bird doctor's appointment DOES NOT mean that I need all of my Notifications to be at the same volume.
I can understand Reminders and Calendar and other specific Productivity and Time-Management-related applications perhaps sharing the same volume level as those -could- be considered Just As Important.
    But Notifications for GAMES?
Do my Game Notifications REALLY need to be so loud as to wake the living dead?
Just because I don't like my Notifications to be as loud as my Alarm Clock DOES NOT mean that I want to turn them OFF.
Instead of being at full volume like my Alarm Clock is, it would be nice to have my Notifications at only a fraction of that volume.
Something that can be heard but not something that is as disruptive as my Alarm Clock is meant to be.
Related to that, YES, I KNOW there is a Do Not Disturb mode, but AGAIN, that turns Notifications OFF completely.
A Lower volume level (compared to my Alarm Clock) for Notifications is not the same as Silence.
Also related to that, YES, I KNOW that the volume for Ringer and Alerts can be changed with the Change with Buttons option, but AGAIN, whatever the setting ends up being for that is applied to BOTH my Alarm Clock and Important Notifications and Notifications in General.
After my Alarm Clock goes off, I can turn it DOWN to compensate for the Notifications and Alerts... but then that also means that before the day is up, I need to turn the volume back UP to ensure I will manage to hear my Alarm Clock.
I try my best to remember, but I have both 1) missed my Alarm Clock because I couldn't hear it because I forgot to turn the volume back up, and 2) scared myself and my co-workers silly with the unexpected blast of a Notification being pushed through at the same volume level as my Alarm Clock because I forgot to turn the volume down.
In closing, you managed to separate the Music and Video sound control from the Alerts/Notifications sound control.  Why not the Alarm Clock (and other similarly important Time-Management apps), too?
    Yours in Exasperation,
    Sef

  • Can not find sound controls for Satellite A80?

Hi, Im a very new user of a satellite A80, it only 4 days old, I played a cd and couldnt find any graphic equalizer or sound controls. I did get into the Toshiba assist area, but it wouldnt allow me to change the bass and treble, can anyone help me with this.
The cd automatically plays in window media player, is there a special program already installed on the hard drive for CD's, or is window media player what I should use?
    thanks in advance,
    deb

    Hi Deb,
You don't say which version of Windows Media Player you have. However, there will be a Graphic Equalizer option somewhere but it may be well hidden.
I would recommend downloading the latest version from the Microsoft website.
On WMP V9 the Graphic Equalizer is accessed by clicking on a small window icon at the bottom left corner of the screen (if you hover the pointer over it is called 'Select Now Playing Options')this gives a pulldown menu on which the third item is called ENHANCEMENTS. This will expand to show the Graphic Equalizer.
You can, of course, use other software to play CDs. If you right click on the CD-ROM item in your My Computer
you will be able to set which programme you wish to use to play CDs.

  • When instant streaming Netflix on my Macbook Pro, the sound is very very low even when sound controls are set at highest level.

When instant streaming Netflix on my Macbook Pro, the sound is very very low even when sound controls are set at highest level.  I do not have this problem when listening to TV or watching movies streamed from DishNetwork.  I contacted Netflix and they had me install a newer version of their software Silverlight... this did nothing to resolve the issue.  They were not familiar with the issue.

Well if your on 10.6.2, you need to software update to 10.6.8
Perhaps you need to adjust the Silverlight (Microsoft DRM video plug-in) sound level itself too
Run a check here to see if your current on your Silverlight (works for all browsers)
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
Use another browser like Firefox and see if it continues.
Try another video file. They all have their own sound levels too.

  • Recording audio level in Sound control panel resets after each slide

This has been a HUGE problem for me ever since I went from Windows XP to Windows 7 and Captivate 5.5.  Basically, the sound was not recording loudly enough no matter what I did.  So, I checked the Sound Control Panel and the Level was down to 12.  Of course, I adjusted it to 100.  It would stay at 100 for just one recording.  As soon as I hit the red recording button a second time, Captivate readjusts it back down to 12.
Now, you might think that this has something to do with my hardware device.  Think again.  I tried numerous hardware devices -- it did not matter which device I used -- the problem remained the same.  You might also think that it is not a Captivate problem, but how do you explain that the problem does not exist when I record audio in any other program -- Lectora, Articulate, Windows Audio recorder?  It ONLY occurs with Captivate.
So, I finally got an Adobe Support person on the phone ...  somewhere way down in TIMBUCKTOO -- of course!  And of course, he could not help me or explain why this is happening and tried to blame it on anything except Captivate.  This has added 6-7 keystrokes to every slide I have to record....  and drastically impacted productivity.
Is anybody listening out there?  Because I'm pulling my hair out and ready to dump Captivate!

I'm posting specs on my machine.  If there are any settings I left out, please let me know where to go to find further information.  I'm assuming my audio/sound devices may be of interest here:
