Pismo Power cuts away when display adjusted

Hi all, I dig these forums, and am here because I'm stuck. I have a PB Pismo, and it works great...except when I physically move the display, open or closing it, or moving it forward or back...then the power goes dead. Very annoying. I can't figure this out...why would the computer lose its power simply when moving the display? I'm pretty good at tinkering but this baffles me. Please help. David
G3 Pismo   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I forgot to add...there is a crack behind the display on the right handside. I've checked the connections from the display into the computer itself, and all the connections are solid. If I just touch the display, and move it two inches forward or two inches back, the power goes out. Other than that the PB works fine. So could this mean that it's the monitor itself? Any suggestions?

  • Sudden power cut out when battery is not fully depleted?

My MacBook Pro is misbehaving - when running on battery it will spontaneously cut out as if someone has yanked the battery out - no warning. Its doing this seemingly unrelated to how much power is left, and gives no warning messages at all. Any ideas?

Your battery may need calibration.  (The battery may be empty before it is recognized as being empty.)  Try this:

  • I am trying to insert a cut photo into a movie clip. the cutaway photo appears above the clip and cuts away when you move the curser across it, but does not show the cutaway when in playback. What am I missing?away

I am trying to insert a cutaway photo into a movie clip. The cuaway photo appears over the clip and will appear in the clip when you manually moce the curser across it, but will not appear in the clip during playback. What am I missing?

Try using the SHARE menu to share your movie in the sizes you need. It should work on the shared copy.
Another thing to try would be to restart your Mac so you have fresh memory.

  • Pro Tools will not launch following power cut during installation

Having just bought an mbox 2 I installed the version of Pro Tools 7 that it came with. Once installed, I opened up the demo project to check that everything worked okay and this was successful. I then downloaded the free upgrade to Pro Tools 8 that was e-mailed to me having registered my copy of Pro Tools 7. During the installation, my house suffered a power-cut. When I relaunched it, two error messages came up on the screen about the mbox and one other product which I hastily clicked 'fix' to. Unfortunately I cannot remember what these were but I think it mentioned something about start-up. I then uninstalled Pro Tools and re-installed Pro Tools 8 and every time I launch it it crashes saying 'Pro Tools quit unexpectedly'.
    Unsuccessful troubleshooting attempts:
-Tried uninstalling and re-installing, verying a disk repair after each attempt
    -Tried restarting several times
-Tried unplugging the mbox 2 before installing/uninstalling with no success
-Tried installing both Pro Tools 7 and 8 with the same results.

Joey, does it have an uninstaller?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If that doesn't work we may have a munged OS component.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • HT2810 Apple HD Cinema Display will not come back on after brief power cut.

My Apple HD cinema display won't come back after a brief power cut.
There is the little white power light on the front which pulses on three times and then extinguishes, repeatedly.
The Mac itself seems to power up although it's hard to tell if it's bboting properly, as I cannot see anything on the screen.
There is power going to both units so I have no idea what is happening.

This sounds like a very common problem.  If the blinks are one short, one longer, one short..... long pause... repeat.... start searching this forum.   There are also Youtube videos on solving it.  If this is the problem, the solution is easy.  You block both center pins on the 10 pin power connector.   Its crazy but it works.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2086442?start=30&tstart=0
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vodDfic8omA
I just used a very thin strip of paper folded in half and slipped into the display's connector so it covers ONLY the two center contacts, then slip it into the power module very carefully.  Make sure there is some slack in the paper as otherwise it will tear and the contact will still be made.  If it doesn't work at first, try again as the paper made have torn in process.   It would be better to use something stonger like a very thin strip of mylar.   Or you can do what the video shows, but I didn't try that exactly.

Try moving the cursor off both the left and right sides of the MBP's display. It could be the displays are just not arranged as you expect them.
This can be altered by going into Displays Preferences and, under the Arrangement tab, you can move the small blue rectangles, meant to represent the two displays, into an order which matches their true arrangement.

A couple of months ago it became apparent that some batteries in macbook pros were faulty. check this site to see if your battery is one of the batteries request for exchagne. • Power button pressed when ibook closed

I have a iBook G4 14-inch. Its power button protrudes above the surface of the bottom panel. When the ibook is turned off and closed, the top bezel will press down into the button if the ibook is pressed together, such as being placed inside a case. This is my only ibook (have a PB alum and 2 pismos) so I cannot determine if the button should protrude above the surrounding panel. The ones on the pismos are recessed. When we pack the ibook, we have to remove the battery to keep it from booting up (and then have to reset the clock when it's up because there is no PRAM battery).
I have taken this ibook apart several times to replace parts (including a complete new display) so I cannot be sure how the high thebutton should be. Thanks.
    PB G4 1.33 15 Aluminum

Thanks for the info. I assume if you press on the lid when it's closed, it does not power up.
When I take off the top cover, I'll see if the heat shield or something else is keeping the button pushed upwards. It may be that the plastic case (top or bottom) is warped enought to make a difference. I replaced the entire display section with one from a 1Ghz ibook G4 and it may be causing a problem. I may have to swap back to the original screen bezel and case to make things work. Ugh.

  • My new iMac will be exposed to  daily Power cuts ..........Advice Please

I am about to buy my first Apple Mac, an iMac 24 inch, a possible future problem I can for see is that here we get daily power cuts lasting between 5 minuest to 5 hours , I am planning on Buying a an UPS (uninterruptible power supply ) which I hope should automatically Close down the iMac when I am not there.
    My questions are.
If I am at the computer when there’s a power cut is there a quick way to shut it down That will not cause any long term problems to the computer say if ive no applications or work In progress that need saving I just need to shut the computer down - on this PC ive got a one click quick shutdown option
If I am at the computer when there is a power cut , and the UPS gives me time to manually turn of the computer before the power totally goes off, is there a correct fast Way to go about saving documents Etc and then shut off the computer in such a way that it will not affect the computer in any long term way.
If the computer is set to sleep and there’s a power cut , the UPS should shut it down Automatically , what would happen when the power is restored , would the
computer re start it self and return to sleep mode and if this is so would there be any long term Problems associated with this regular UPS automatic shut down and computer auto re start back to sleep mode.
Does any one think that the regular power cut's syndrome may in any way affect the long term running and reliability of the computer , has any one suggestions as to what's the best way to cope and prepare for this daily power cut situation..?
    Thanks .....

    1. If I am at the computer when there’s a power cut is there a quick way to shut it down...
In the top left corner of Mac OS X is an Apple menu available in almost every app you may be using with a Shut Down command. Mac apps are written to interrupt a Shut Down to query what to do about open files with unsaved content. After you have been given the opportunity to Save or Don't Save open files the Shut Down proceeds.
    2. If I am at the computer when there is a power cut , and the UPS gives me time to manually turn of the computer before the power totally goes off...
The UPS should give you more than enough time to safely save all open files, quit open apps and shut down the Mac. The quickest way to begin this process is the Shut Down command in the Apple menu. You should purchase the UPS that gives you the most time to take care of shutting down within your price range.
    3. If the computer is set to sleep and there’s a power cut , the UPS should shut it down Automatically , what would happen when the power is restored...
From my own experience of a homeland with an unreliable electric supply, I personally don't see any advantage of having the Mac restart itself to only be put to sleep. Especially if the power interruption is caused by an ongoing storm which may continue to interrupt the power
    4. Does any one think that the regular power cut's syndrome may in any way affect the long term running and reliability of the computer...
Macs are made to be left on 24/7, without being put to sleep. I sleep mine when not in use. My experience with Macs is they can take this power interruption in stride. Mine have for 24 years. I am grateful our federal power monopoly has improved over the years and my UPS is called upon to do its job much less frequently today!

  • The sound on my iPhone 4S cuts out when playing music/podcasts.

The sound on my iPhone 4S cuts out when playing music/podcasts.  If I unplug and replug in the headphones, the sound comes back on, but often for only 20 seconds or so before cutting out again.  Sometimes it will play for 15-20minutes before cutting out.  The track is not "paused", and appears to continue, just no sound.  I tried cleaning the headphone jack with compressed air to no avail.  I also noticed the the same phenomenon occurs when I sync my bluetooth to my car audio.  That is, it will play for a while, then the sound will cut out, even though the track is still shown to be playing.  If I reset the bluetooth, the sound comes back on.
This started happening about a week ago, but no "event" that I can think of caused it.  I didnt' get the phone wet, forcefully drop it, or leave it in extreme heat.  I've tried doing a reset of the phone.  I also was running iOS5 when I first noticed this, and since upgraded to iOS6.  The problem appeared with both.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

One thing that helped was getting a toothbrush and scrubbing the dock connector on the phone.  I scrubbed the connector and used compressed air for about 1/2 hour till the connector looked much cleaner.  An Apple employee told me that the pins on the phone had a little corrosion and sand.  The problem hasn't gone away completely, but has been significantly reduced.  I'm going to hold out until my contract expires after which time I'll switch to an iPhone5 (or newer) or Android phone.

  • My History became cleared after a power-cut - can I find it in Time Machine ?

Normally, after a forced quit, Firefox restores all open websites. After a power-cut, this did NOT happen ... when I looked in History I found it completely empty (although I did not clear it).
I have Time Machine on my Mac ... but where do I look to restore the History ?

How have you searched in Time Machine?
If you can't recover them from there, the you'll need a file recovery application like File Salvage
Note that you won't be able to recover the Library the best you can hope is to recover the photos. The can by the file recovery software may find many files with the same name. In all cases choose to recover the largest file.

  • New Photo/Video Import Lost Due to Power Cut - Any Ideas?

I am using OS X 10.9.1, and iPhoto '08, V7.1.5.  My iMac was in the closing stages of a photo/video import from my iPhone 5 when a power cut occured.  I had thought the photos would already be in the new album that I'd just created because I had just been asked the question Keep or Delete Original Photos (I  responded DELETE).  When I restarted after the power cut, the new iPhoto album contained nothing at all, and 80% of the originals had been deleted off my iPhone.  I have tried looking in the main iPhoto library and Last Import folder with no joy.  Is there anythig else that I can try please?

Quick update to say that I found them!  I convinced myself that when the power cut occured, there's no way that a few GB of media could be instantly deleted, and thus they must be somewhere on the HD.......similar to data getting stored in a TEMP folder on a PC.  I managed to access the main LIBRARY folder via Finder >> GO >> OPTION KEY and then did a search for one of the photo numbers that I knew was missing. Amazingly found it together with all the other 588 missing photos & movies buried in a folder called 26Dec2013_2 (strange considering this happened on 01Jan2014 and all the photos/media were from the period 27Dec to 01Jan).  Note that my earlier search of the entire iPhoto Library package had also proved fruitless. Not sure where that folder was actually residing, but I copied the entire contents to my Desktop and then imported them into iPhoto.  In short, I am so happy!  Lesson learned about the dangers of power cuts, especially living in a city short on energy.  I will not do that again.  Hope this helps someone else sometime in the future. Thanks.

  • When display switches off I can't get it back without forced restart

When display switches off due to low battery power & I can't get it back even when I plug in to the mains and have to force the PC to restart.
Is there a pref somewhere to disable this?

    Hello
When the display goes off exactly? How much capacity has battery at this time? 5%? More?
Try to set this to higher level.
When you work with your notebook and battery level comes to low battery level and the alarm alert will be shown in task bar but you will be able to continue your work several minutes or to connect AC power supply.
I am afraid your notebook reaches critical battery level and then is maybe too late for any action.
Set Low battery level to 10% and when the notification is shown connect AC adapter immediately.
I presume the display must not be off at all.
