Pismo (powerbook g3 with firewire) upgrade to mac osx 10.4.9

After having this Powerbook G3 Pismo (400 MHz, 2 firewire and 2 USB ports) I decided to upgrade from 10.3 up to 10.4.9 (if doable).
Since this Powerbook G3 had a 5.59 GB hard drive (which had 12% free space) and 512MB RAM I could tell there were many things that had to be done but I'd try them in steps first.
I ordered additional RAM (2 512MB cards from www.powerbookmedic.com) for $189.90 ($94.95 each 512MB card). The idea would be replacing the two 256MB cards. The cards arrived 3 days later and I had no trouble replacing the top 256MB card (thus going from 512MB to 768MB) but the lower card was going to be a bit of trouble.
I noticed a performance change right away with activity monitor (CPU usage, system memory, etc) and decided it would be worth it to continue.
Circuit City in Deerfield Beach, Florida is an authorized Apple service center so a trip to them was next. I explained that I wanted the hard drive replaced (5.56 GB) with a 60 GB one ($80 for the hard drive), and install the 512MB card that I brought with me ($30 labor). Paid for all of items ($80 for hard drive plus $30 for labor) and went home.
A few hours later Circuit City called up and said I could pick up the Powerbook on Sunday morning after 11:00. Wow!
Picked it up and tested a few items by doing a software update (it now had 10.3 loaded on to the 60 GB drive). I used Circuit City's wireless connection there at the service counter. All the updates came up fine (glad they did not charge me for bandwidth).
Off to home and where I still had my Mac OS X 10.4 DVD from my MacBoook Pro 17". Put in the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD and kept my fingers crossed. It worked, took about 45 minutes all said and down.
Under system preferences made sure that synching thru .Mac was enabled so now my Powerbook G3 has all the addressbook, bookmarks, iCal, etc of my Macbook Pro.
Not a lot of dollars ($300) to get a 7 year old computer (February 2000 when purchased) to year 2007.
Can't say it would work the same if I had a lombard or wallstreet version but it certainly did work out well for pismo (400 MHz, 2 firewire and 2 usb ports). It makes me think how advanced this powerbook g3 was back in early 2000.

Hi sanchezpaulk!
You wrote "Off to home and where I still had my Mac OS X 10.4 DVD from my MacBoook Pro 17". Put in the Mac OS X 10.4 DVD and kept my fingers crossed. It worked, took about 45 minutes all said and down."
I'm very surprised that you were able to use a Model Specific install disc, for an Intel Mac, to install a functioning system on a PPC Mac.

Same list as stedman1, but uses model numbers which is slightly more accurate.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.         Application Compatibility
If you have applications that you want to use that aren’t compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on or you can run Snow Leopard  server in a virtual mode.
If your computer isn't compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.        Computer Compatibility - Lion
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the Mac osx 10.5.11 dual 2.7 Speaking to the issues Such as Mac OS X 10.6

Is it possible to upgrade the Mac osx 10.5.11
    dual 2.7
    Speaking to the issues
Such as Mac OS X 10.6

There isn't a OSX 10.5.11.  It looks like you are asking about how to upgrade from OSX 10.4.11 (as suggested in your profile) to 10.6 (or was this another typographical error and you meant 10.5?) on something with a dual 2.7 processor.  If you are talking about a G5 or any G series Mac then you cannot upgrade further than OSX 10.5 Leopard (the forum in which you posted this question).  Only Intel Macs can run 10.6 and greater.
It would help to know exactly which computer you are using, which exact operating system version it is using, and which one to which you wish to upgrade.

  • Actually, I upgraded to mac Osx I had iphoto, imovie, the whole work; However. After downloading Osx 10.5.8 it all went away and states that it's not compatible anymore.

Actually, I upgraded to mac Osx I had iphoto, imovie, the whole work; However. After downloading Osx 10.5.8 Only I photo would word, imovie would not work, my camera was not recognized. itunes was ok, After my system start having a problem I tried to re-download Mac Osx again, then I lost Imovie, iphoto, and itunes, recently I was able to get itunes back by downloading quicktime 7.7, in which i discovered through the support communities. Now I would like to
get imove, i photo if at all possible. I've read that by installing a hex something, that it works fine. But it seems to be complicated to install. Can I get some advise on this issue foe  iBook G4 10.5.8? Let me know Apples are expensive. maybe it's time for a windows system. I've also heard that the refurbished mac are a piece of trash from some reviews.

You can't upgrade from Mac OS X 10.4 to Mac OS X 10.5 via a download. You would have to buy the DVD and upgrade that way.
Any applications that were using Classic emulation (OS 9 applications) in Mac OS X 10.4 would be lost in an upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.
I've also heard that the refurbished mac are a piece of trash from some reviews.
That depends on who does the refurbishing. If you buy a refurbished Mac directly from Apple, it will be as good as a new Mac and will even have the one-year warranty that comes with a new Mac. If you buy a "refurbished" Mac from an eBay seller, all bets are off.

  • I just upgraded to Mac OSX Lion and can't attach documents to my hotmail.  Can anyone help?

I just upgraded to Mac OSX Lion and can't attach documents to my hotmail.  Can anyone help?

    Hi there,
Over the last few days, this issue has been driving me up the wall too!
I downloaded Lion OS a few months ago, but it was only until a few days ago did i attempt to logon to Hotmail to check my account & send an email with an attachment.
Normally i use the MAC Mail app, which is synchronised to my hotmail account.
Anyway, I'm not sure whether the Lion OS is the root cause of the issue, however after much digging around on various forums - the issue for me was resolved by downloading the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight 5 (www.microsoft.com/silverlight). Its a free download....

Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
If it's an Intel iMac then yes.

  • Is it worthwhile to upgrade to Mac OSX?

    Dear all,
Right now, I'm using iMac DV400 slot loading 512RAM 10GB, mac 9.2.2.My intention for using this iMac is just surfing the internet using adsl modem. Will there a speed increase or slow down when upgrade to mac osx in term of surfing the internet. I'm understand that mac osx using a lot of memory when running the application. If I decide to upgrade to mac osx, should I just stick to 10.1, 10.2 or 10.3?

    hw1609:
Go for it. I loved OS 9 but I haltingly made the change to OS X and love it. I would recommend that if you decide to make the move you go directly to Panther instead of doing it in increments. You can buy it reasonably at eBay or OWC. Be sure you get the Full Retail Version.
    Post back with further questions.
    Good luck.

Your Mac is definitely one of the supported models? http://www.apple.com/uk/osx/specs/
If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23477 1
Also, some usrs have found that logging out of the Mac App Store and then back in again and starting over has kick-started the download. It seems that the 5+gb download can take a long time to give any feedback as to what's happening.

please help me to upgrade my mac osx 10.5.8 to mountain lion. i am not able to do it.becoz i am not having app store.

Before you buy anything, first make sure your Mac is compatible.
Minimum specs for Snow Leopard.  Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard -                 Read the Technical Specifications
Note.  You can no longer buy Snow Leopard from an Apple retail store, only as follows.
If you are in North America ... Last I read, you must call them (1-800-MY-APPLE). It is $29 plus tax for family pack and $19 plus tax for the individual use version.
In Europe or otherwise … call your National Apple Helpline … http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Once you have bought and upgraded you will need to apply the Combo updater for Snow Leopard.          Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
For Mountain Lion the minimum specs are … technical specifications.
But if your computer meets those specs you can upgrade to Mountain Lion without any intermediate steps.
