Pixel dimensions on a slideshow burned with iDVD

I used iPhoto to create a slideshow that I want to burn to DVD. I did nothing in iPhoto to adjust the pixel dimensions of my images; and they look great when viewed in iPhoto. When I used iDVD to burn the slideshow to a DVD, then viewed the slideshow from the DVD my images look flat and fuzzy compared to the same images viewed in iPhoto. My question is how come?
Do I need to change a pixel-dimension setting or something in iDVD to get the same image quality as I have in iPhoto?
This is the first time I've tried burning a slideshow to a DVD.
Thanks
Greg

we hear this often on iDvd forums. It's because DVD's are low resolution devices essentially. Images ultimately wind up being about a third of a megapixel or 640x480 when compressed to fit on to DVD-R.
The only way to get significantly better image quality is to use Blueray or HD Burners but as of yet most macs simply do not support this latest technology.
In the meantime you may want to consider using an app like:

  • Been burning with iDVD-but it has stopped working

I have been burning with iDVD for 2 years now. I have a G4 powerbook 12inch but now my movies are not burning. They will get half way there and then when it gets to the finalization stage there will be some kind of message about the media or 0.1 or something. Is there anything I can do to quickly combat the problem; I took it to an Apple specialist and he said it needs to be sent in to be checked out. My roommate has an ibook-is there anyway that I can hook my labtop to her's and burn from her labtop. Any help would be appreciated...I will be upgrading my labtop but do not have the funds to tackle the expenses involved right now. Thanks!

My standard list of things to do first...
Run Cache Out X (free download) to clear all system and application caches.
Run MacJanitor (free download) to do all the Unix Cron Maintenance scripts.
Run Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities) and repair disk permissions on your start up drive (typically your internal drive). Also verify any other drives mounted on the system.
Run Preferential Treatment (free download) to check for corrupt/damaged application and system preference files.
    Reboot your Mac.
If you still can not get it to run correctly, next thing to try is to throw out the iDVD preference file. If it still doesn't work, then I would suggest you reinstall iDVD.

  • Slideshow created with iphoto will not burn with idvd

I cannot seem to burn dvd using idvd.  slideshow created with iphoto

I'm having the same problem after upgrading to 10.3.9 and iphoto 4.0.3. Read below:
Until recently I was running 10.1.5 using iphoto 2 to burn folders of photos within a library. After upgrading to 10.3.9 and iphoto 4.0.3 I get a message: “The burn to the ARCHOS MiniCDRW XS8432 drive failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry.”
Actually, I got another message before I installed patchburn 3.1.2. After installing patchburn 3.1.2 for 10.3.X, system profiler recognized my burner and says it is supported but the above message is displayed after the program has stopped the process.
Toast Titanium 5.2.1 burns CD’s just fine but when a CD with an iphoto library is inserted into the CD-ROM the iphoto program will not recognize it. In other words, it won’t show up in iphoto as an iphoto library or anything for that matter. Maybe there’s a way to do this in Toast or maybe I need something else to make iphoto work with my burner.
    Can anybody help me? Thanks!

  • Poor image quality after burning with idvd

I used Final Cut Express to make a 45min movie. When I preview the finished product as a Quicktime file it looks great. BUT when I burn it with idvd, the quality of the video is terrible! Jagged diagonal lines, some color loss, some dancing pixels,...
I have been trying to find the solution to this problem for days on end, I have burned about 20 dvd's now, all in different settings and so on, but the quality is not improved.
First I thought it was my tv, but then I put the dvd in my mac and compared the same scene from my quicktime file with the scene on the dvd, and the difference in quality is staggering! For instance, diagonal white road markings are crisp on the quicktime file, but jagged on the dvd.
What is idvd doing with my movie????? Help me!

My Final Cut Express movie (.mov file) is crisp, and interlaced.
You are missing the point - your CRISP FCE movie is mpg-2 compressed by iDVD - that's what DVDs are - mpg-2 compressed video content. Unfortunately, mpg-2 is a very low quality CODEC compared to modern CODECs like h.264.
The best image quality out of iDVD will result in using the 'Best Performance' mode of encoding - this requires your content be under 60 minutes for a single-layer disc.
'Best Performance' encoding uses fixed bit-rate encoding that produces a DVD with about as high playback bit-rate as can be supported by set-top DVD players.
You have three choices: (1) live with the mpg-2 compression on a DVD because you can't do anything about it, (2) use the h.264 CODEC out of FCE and create a data DVD with the file that can be played back in computers, (3) make a Blu-ray disc if you have the equipment and buy the software.

  • Imovie 09 - exporting options for HD and burning with iDVD

I hope someone can be of help...here it goes
I shoot my footage in 1080i and import as Full HD into Imovie 09. I would like to export the movie files in 1080i so that I can burn to bluray in the near future. However, I'm currently stuck with burning to DVDs currently.
    1) Does burning to DVD with movie files that are 1080i present any issues with iDVD? If yes, how should I export from imovie 09 to have the best quality?
    2) If exporting as 1080i, should I use: "Export as movie" or "Export as quicktime"
    3) If "export as quicktime", what are the best settings to use?
Currently, I'm using "export as movie" with "Full HD" and when I go to burn a disc in iDVD, I have to use "high quality" or "profesional quality" due to a popup that says insufficient space...the result doesn't look good. Would the result be better on DVD if I used 960x540 to export and then used that file to burn to DVD?
My current workflow take about 6 hours to export as 1080i (for 1.5 hours of footage) and then another 4 hours in iDVD to reencode.
    I know, lots of questions
Thanks for taking time to read post.

    Hi
As I get it - iMovie'08 & 09 are meant to produce small YouTune movies.
    Not Full HD
There is NO version of iDVD that can handle HD or Full HD.
So I think You can export under Share a fairly good QuickTime movie but then You
need another tool to get it onto a DVD.
    I would use
    • Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro
    • With Blue-Ray component
    • Blue-Ray burner and disks
    Still You need a
    • Blue-Ray Player to be able to view it (Can't be playebacked on DVD-player OR Mac)
    • PlayStation 3 - has a Blur-Ray player
I would also prepare my movie in FinalCut Express or Pro. One has to cheque
that Your format can be handled without any limitations.

  • Restore DVD-RW's RW capability after a burn with iDVD

I recently burned a very simple video from an iMovie project onto a DVD-RW with iDVD for a class project. The DVD-RW had a few files on it that I transferred to my hard drive so that I could temporarily use the DVD for the video. iDVD deleted all of the files at my request to make a disc able to be read by a regular DVD player.
Everything worked fine until I tried to delete the video from the DVD-RW and restore the files I originally had on it. I attempted to move all of the information I had burned onto the DVD to the trash, only to discover that the folder "VIDEO_TS" was read only. Further the entire DVD had been changed to "Read only." Thus, it seems that burning the movie from iMovie onto the DVD-RW by means of iDVD somehow altered my DVD from a DVD-RW to a DVD-R.
I simply want to restore my DVD-RW's Re-Writing capabilities. Is there anyway to do this?

Q: I simply want to restore my DVD-RW's Re-Writing capabilities. Is there anyway to do this?
A: Yes, there is a way. Maybe even a couple of ways at least. You can use apple's disc utility (applications > utilities > disc utility > erase). Roxio Toast will also work to erase DVD-RW.

  • IPhoto 06 slideshow shared with iDVD 06

I have created a slideshow in iPhoto 06 and shared it with iDVD 06. I have shared the slideshow from iPhoto in 4:3 DVD TV and Widescreen to iDVD and saved as standard and widescreen. When I play the DVD in my DVD player it crops the pictures and titles (I have played on two different TV's and DVD players with the same result). What am I doing wrong?

  • Disc burned with iDVD will not play in DVD player only on MAC

I used iMovie to create a movie and then shared it with iDVD. I successfully burned the DVD through iDVD but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays fine on the iMac. It is in UDF format. After reading through posts, I saved the file as a disk image and then burned through Disk Utility. This plays fine but I would really rather burn the disc directly from iDVD. Any ideas why the DVD player says "This type of disc cannot be played"?

Media quality affects the burn errors on a disc. Computer players tend to have better error correction (to preserve digital data) - set-top DVD players tend to have poorer error correction since the are designed to play commercial, stamped DVDs with low error rates.

  • Burn with idvd

Hello. I have a problem with idvd when i want to burn a dvd, there is no problem making and prewiew the movie on imovie and idvd!! it looks great - but when I play back the dvd on my dvdplayer, the movie has been "cut". the sides of the movie has been cut and some of the picture is missing. I have tried burning in 16:9 and 4:3 ..but nothing helps

You clearly have a problem with the burn of the DVD, not with the players. I have a step by step recipe for burning with iDVD4 which you will find on http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1321467?? try this and see if your results are different. There is no point in trying the DVD on a player until you can get it to load on your mac.
You should also quit iDVD and trash the iDVD preferences that means the file com.apple.iDVD.plist in Library > Preferences but make sure you reset "Next Project" to PAL as soon as you reload.

  • Problems with the interlaced Fields after burning with iDVD

The original quicktimes have interlaced frames and once I burn them with iDVD seams that there is a problem with the fields, like they are in ht ewrong order or something.

    Anyone?

I Have a similar problem my apple health app hasn't worked from day one - I use my fitness pal and no matter what I do it just doesn't communicat or pass information to apples app - ive even tried a different steps app and that doesn't communicat either. Even running on ISO 8.2 hasn't  rectified connectivity issues.
I Wonder if apple is aware of these issues lol

  • Using an external dual layer DVD burner with iDVD??

I created a 3 hour iDVD file on a dual 2.0 G5 desktop with a dual layer DVD Superdrive. I have since migrated to a MacBook Pro. Now, when I open the iDVD file, it says there is no DL Superdrive on my system and that it will convert the file to single layer or something like that, with the option to cancel or proceed. If I purchase an external DL DVD burner will iDVD detect it and allow me to continue working with the file?? Or do I have to get a whole other Mac with a DL Superdrive (iMac or 17" MBP)?? The error specifically stated 'Superdrive', so I am not sure if just an external DL will work. Thanks for any help.

Sorry to have to post this here, but your topic "How can I see the bitrate while playing a DVD?" in the DVD SP forum.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=325516
has been archived and no one can reply to it.
Thank you so much. Using VLC 0.8.5 to view bitrate was an excellent discovery for those who don't have the cash to buy the DigiGami poducts.
Perhaps you should re-open a new topic for others to respond to.

  • IPhoto slideshow burned in iDVD

I created an album in iPhoto with a few comments/titles and burned it in iDVD as a slideshow.   Is there a way to remove the dark "box" around the captions that appear on the DVD?   Also, some of the slides that do not have text have the empty "boxes".    Any ideas?

Where did you add the comments and titles, in iDVD?  If so there's nothing you can do about how they are presented.  If you didn't add them in iDVD how did you add them and can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing?

  • IPhoto show transfered and burned with iDVD will not play

Using iLife 6 - I have 425 photos in iPhoto edited and set to run 3 seconds with dissolves. Transfered to iDVD and created menue and sound from iTunes. The show appears to run fine in preview. However, when I burn the disk it will not run on a DVD player. It runs for a while and then studders or stops. Will sometimes start back up and then stop again. I have tried the following:
Have reduced all of the photos from origonal 4 to 5 MB down to 200 - 400 KB
Have tried 3 different types of master media.
Have tried 4 different DVD players. It plays best on my expensive Pioneer PRV
9200 but still has some small problems and studdering.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Is there any way to change the burn speed and settings in iDVD?
If you create a disk image, you can use Toast to burn and control speed to 4X or slower.
    File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Once iMovie project is burned with iDVD, picture on TV is cut off on both sides.

I made a movie slideshow using iMovie and used iDVD to burn it to disc. The movie plays fine, but when played on a TV, both sides of the picture are cut off. I inerted the disc into a computer and it plays fine there... I guess the problem is just TV format?

The following is just to illustrate Bengt's comment regarding TV-overscan:

  • A portion of audio that is synced in iMovie, is out of sync when burned with iDVD. How can I avoid this?

I'm trying to burn a simple movie, using iMovie and finishing in iDVD. A portion of the audio is out of sync when burned, despite it being in sync in iMovie. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi
Try to - Save as a DiskImage - then test this with Apple DVD-tool.
Does this play OK - burn this DiskImage by using Disk Util tool.
Set down burn speed to x2 or 4
